Hello,
I'm trying to fill a table useful to understand how much RAM is really available to the user in Android Phones.
Please try "Free Memory" by coconuts on the market or the "free" command in Terminal to let me know the total RAM of your device so that I can understand how much is reserved for hardware operations.
Please also say which ROM are you using.
Thanks

Some ROMs and the Smart Tools enhancement add a "hibernate" function. Which seems to free up RAM but doesn't cause the kind of hibernation I expect from a notebook...
So what does it do?
It just frees up the RAM from minimized programs. Completely different from a PC' hibernate.
The Hibernate software is from oxios.com

Carty..
So any functional difference between this and the utility in Celetask? Because I've seen them both bundled in some ROMs...
BTW, thank you for your speed 'splanation.
No difference - the name confusion originates from WM_HIBERNATE (i think) being sent to processes, which tells them to free as much memory as possible
IC thank for your responses.
The spec for this device states 512MB ROM and 288MB RAM but how much is available after a hard reset?
So to answer my own question and for any others who might be interested:
Storage (ROM), total 322MB, free 275MB, Program (RAM) total 201MB, free 141MB (without tf3d, including tf3d adds about 10MB)
These figures are from a device after having been turned on for the very first time.
hey fellow XDA WM devs and users and forum people,
Greetings,
so I am asking whether not WM devices are capped on using 25+mb of RAM for each app...
If so, can I assume that this is the reason why we cannot have stunning graphic games just like the other compatitor platforms (iOS, Android) ??
also, a reply tweet from one of my favourite game dev:

any comments or answers are greatly apprerciated
Kind Regards
Processes in winmo can only access 32 mb of virtual memory (with a max of 32 processes). There's normally at least 7 mb or so of memory allocated to dll's for all processes (sometimes more). 32-7=25 mb. I think that's what the developer is talking about. This is changing with WP7, where all process will have full access to 1 GB of virtual memory (limited by the amount of availabe RAM).

thanks farmer tad for your reply....
now its all clear to me
thanks.
(oh lol... then what's thhe point of phones having all those extra RAM while the OS cannot use them, at all?)
I was thinking and can't remember where I posted it before, but it seems that all of windows mobile devices for the most part lack one think available ram, now I was wondering if a developer or everyday tinker person could create this. As we all know all of the new MS OS available have a feature called ready boost that allows you to use an usb flash drive with the same size to increase or double your available ram similar to the use of swap in linux. Now if were able to partition our sd disk to a portion being the size of the available ram and would make device see it maybe this could increase the lifespan of older devices and increase performance. I believe this can be achieved because I am able to boot an entire android rom off my sd card. And with the community effort this can be achieved. If you guys think this is a worthy opportunity please let me know though I don't program I will do what I can to help. Thanks in advanced.
search for ramdisk.

gotcha but
I read through that and had different results (thanks for showing me how to use google........you have to have appropriate keyword for appropriate responses). Have you tried that image and did it help you?
Hi Guys,
I'm wondering if it's possible to create an application that unload process and memory usage to a minimalistic environment on Android.
Let me explain why i'm asking that:
I have a 256MiB Ram device and i would like to play Dungeon Defenders on it (3D MMO game).
Requirement is 256MiB on the paper but a game developer said that game use about 160MiB in memory. Well i'm already using an optimized rom (CyanogenMod) and the application still crash on startup because of lake of memory ..
Do you have any idea in order to reach 200MiB Ram free on my phone ?
If you have any suggestion to :
- replace homescreen
- remove useless program from the memory
- use X software
to free as much ram as possible : please post !
Thank you !
You could try to revert to Donut.
Yes i thought about it but i have to stick with Android 2.2
How much the difference would be between 2.1 and 2.2 ?
