I've heard everything. From you'll need a different Sim to get 4G speeds, you'll need to change your data plan, and at&t hasn't launched 4G yet. What's going on? I personal can't get speeds over 2.2 mbps and from what I've read nobody else can either. Whats the real deal here?

real deal is att just relabel their 3G as 4G!
on att map, it shows i got 4G coverage in bayarea, CA.
but speedtest is the same as my regular 3G phone (captivate)!
Heck Rochester NY my Captivate if faster than the "4G" speeds. I can get 3.3 down 1.2 up on average on the captivate. Inspire is around 2.2 and .2.

dirty secret of 4g
fake 4g vs real 4g
I was told by an att employee that they won't be launching the 4g until June. It will show up on your phone as 4g coverage but won't get the speed of it until June.
Anyone else read the title of this thread and think of "The Real Deal with Bill McNeil?"
Also, signs point to hspa+ not being turned on til some mystical future day.

I have 4G in Seattle.
I also was given a new Sim card, a bit different then the one I had for my Captivate.
I am getting anywhere from 2.5mb to 6mb DL.
The real deal is that AT&T (well all the carriers) lied to us and the newer speeds will be rolled out whenever they feel like it.
I don't know anyone who's in the prime 4G spots who gets decent speeds (without or without the patched HSUPA).
I like others on the forums have heard many mixed things about when they'll officially be rolling the faster speeds out but for the moment we all got duped.

I am in Baltimore (launched 4G market) and I get better speeds in the 3G areas then I do in the center of the 4G areas.
Kinda ****ed up!
Patience
O.k. here is the real deal... an actual answer to your question rather than simply posting my speeds.
4g is being rolled out in several phases. Lets tackle them one at a time.
First AT&T is releasing HSPDA+ as 4G... technically it is not 4g but since T-Mobile is advertising it that way, so is AT&T. This has 2 different upgrades to make it work. 1) They had to do a software upgrade to the transmitters on the cell towers. I believe that it is either all complete or close to complete. So technically they are using a 4g network for those transmissions. However that leads to the second step. 2) They need to upgrade the physical wires feeding the towers to handle the additional speeds. This is a much more massive process and a much slower roll out. This is called backhaul and is creeping out now, tower by tower. (T-Mobile is in the same boat, and they also do not have their backhaul anywhere near done.)
Second phase is to upgrade the entire system to LTE (a true 4g) This process is not supposed to start until summer and not be significantly built out until mid - late 2012. Verizon also does not have much of their LTE network built out, and don't even have their LTE phone on the market yet (the Thunderbolt).
I still work in an area with only Edge... a little patience and it will get to you. I can tell you that even without the HSPDA+ network running, it is still a ton faster than my Tilt2.
I have only ever seen it say 2g or 4g. I don't have the best coverage so I didn't think much of it, but a friend I'm Chicago is reporting the same issue.

Same here. TMobile has to figure this out. My brother's G2 goes from 3G to H.
Mine goes from 2G to 4G.
Make it a standard as to what shows up on the screen. My understanding it even when it says 4G, you may be in 3G. Only way to know is go into network settings or run a speed test.
Kind of stupid in my opinion.
Yeah, it's not a big deal really, just annoying.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
the exact reason given to me by tmobile is that our phones only register gsm(2g) and wdcma(3G and 4G both fall under this on tmobile) so without really checking at anytime 4g could be 3g its fast either way but annoying none the less
Same here...
So the phone just doesn't ever display 3g? When I'm on the 3g network it will show 4g? Sounds a little bit like false advertising to me. I really don't care too much, but if I am getting less than 1mb down and the phone claims to be on 4g it's kinda bs.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
From what I understand, if you go to Settings > About Phone > Status > Mobile Network Type.
If it says UMTS, then your on 3G
If it says HSDPA or HSPA or HSPA+ then your on 4G.
I could be wrong, when Im out and about driving, I can run a speed test and hit 10-12 Mbps and the settings will still read as UMTS even though that appears to be 4G speeds.

Thats exactly what im going through now. My phone right now for example shows "4G" in the status bar, but Settings/About Phone shows "UMTS" doing a speed test right now, my speeds are Download-0.53 Mbps Upload 0.41
I agree this is BS.
Tried calling TMobile to explain how the coverage map for my area says 100% complete 4G coverage but my speeds are slow as ****. Tried complaining so I can get out my contract and go to Sprint but they say as long as voice calling works slow data speeds dont permit to break contract.
But TMobile and there whole 4G compain definetly is false advertising.
ive gotten 3 or 4 different answers from various reps at tmobile but there all terrible i get fast enough service all around me even edge runs well enough but i wish they would show 3g when its 3g they act like they have amazing 4g coverage but all the new 4g phones do this at least i know the sidekick 4g does and correct me if im wrong but the g2 does as well its just a marketing scam
Hey i work for t-mobile and have the G2x. I hosted an event for the launch of the phone and had my LG rep there. She explained that LG actually forgot to put the 3G indicator on the phone. Personally, I think they need to do with the G2x like they did with the ipad... stop all manufacturing of the item, until all ends and malfunctions are corrected.
including software & hardware. They're just sending stuff out, and in the end sticking it to the consumer by giving them less than quality standard work for the same amount of money they would expect to receive for something put together and functioning "correctly"
(p.s. before i get the "apple made the ipad" bull, LG created the screens, hence the same "bleeding" "light leaks" in the new ipad 2, also Samsung took over when they halted the production of LG screens)

Well this is a lie they didnt forget anything LOL.
Look at the G2 for example which is made by HTC. It will show 2G/E or H. You will never see 3G symbol on the G2. Unless you install one of those custom roms where then the dev make the phone switch between H and 4G / 3G depending on data traffic.
Well I had bad 4G speeds in my part of town for years I finally gave up on tmobile today. Sold my G2x on craigslist and picked up a Nexus S 4G with Sprint.
I now get atleast 10 Mbps on avarage now. Proof is in the signature.
I think that might be going a little too far, but I haven't had too many major issues thus far. Just little annoying things that should be fixed with updates.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
I have an Evo and on the stock Sense ROM, the phone will display 3G even on 1x (the CDMA equivalent of EDGE). If I hop to CyanogenMod or any Sense ROM ported from another HTC phone, it'll show 1x when I roam/send a text. Also Sense ROMs have like 6 signal bars.
It's all about what the carrier wants. Hell, they could make it say 4G all the time if they want. It's weird though that they show 2G and not 3G.

I have to put my two cents in on speeds.
I started (my smarty phone odyssey) on Metropcs in Feb....most speed test ever showed was like 1.6mbps...once. Mostly at 1.4-1.5. I was very unhappy with that. Between these speeds, battery issues, no support (from Samsung), I had enuff and went to Sprint. I saw around1.0 Mbps in the beginning. When I complained, they made an adjustment on their end amd it got worse! My average was .65 up and down. Then I went back to Metro. Seems they are suddenly having speed issues. Couldn't get more than about .80, with the same other issues as before. So I've purchased the G2x.
Got two yesterday!!
Both have bleed. Doesn't bother me as it is though. Just noticeable when screen is black. It IS bs, but not a dealbreaker, if it doesn't get worse.
I see people talking about speeds of 8 and 9Mbps and I say I'd be happy with a third of that.
Personally I don't think speedtest is accurate. But I never see that discussed.
T Mobile is supposed to activate these tomorrow. I'll post my speeds. If I get anything above 4.0, I'll be in heaven.
I have looked at youtube videos via wifi and am in awe of this device. Really smooth playback. Wow. Better than the Indulge AND the Evo IMO.
My new phone is supposed to activate tommorow. Can't wait
Oh and I'm in the Dallas market. I'm on top of DFW airport. Dallas is Metros home market so system is overall good here, but I'm in a bit of a dip so reception can be an issue in my home.

Sprint's been having nationwide issues for like the last 5 months. On 4G, I used to get 15 Mbps, now I get 1 Mbps. On 3G, I get 300 kbps tops. Their network is overcrowded, according to higherups I spoke to. They said it'll be fixed end of June. Not good enough.
I got a Nexus S 4G, I'm getting slow speeds. Anywhere from 0 to 300kbps on average. I pulled 500kbps a few times. Did a speed test next to a friends Evo. Evo pulled 1.2 mbps, the Nexus pulled 200kbps.
I called Sprint, and they flashed a few things on their side and I updated the usual suspects, but nothing changed.
I don't know anyone where I live who has one, so I was wondering if the folks here who have one have noticed slower than normal or even downright abysmal data speeds.
Thanks!
ive been blaming the network. results havent changed across multiple different devices.
I checked mine when I was in a 4g area about an hour ago and I got 4.1M down and 800K up

my reference is for 3g exclusively. granted cdma is capped at 3.1 but sprints 3g network is far slower.
ive experienced terrible sprint 3g speeds for over a year with multiple different blackberry's, multiple htc hero's, multiple htc evo's and now the nexus s 4g.
How sad. What's the use in having unlimited data if it's so slow you can't stream music on Pandora, or download things. Might as well go to AT&T and sign up for my allotted 2gb data. They have really fast data speeds around here.

Go with which ever cell company is best for your area. Here in Nashville TN, the CDMA is dominant. Where as Verizon / Sprint service is strong. My Nexus does on average 8Mbps to 10Mbps down on 4G and 1 to 2Mbps.
So im definitely taking advantage of the unlimited data usage and love it. I do about 2-3 GB of data a week lol.
If the network is slow in your area, Sprint just aint for you just as TMobile just wasn't for me lol.
The day I got my phone, last sunday, I tested the 4g speeds. It was very disappointing. I was getting the same speeds or sometimes slower than 3g. I will have to try again tomorrow if I remember to see if it improved. I'm measuring this against my old epic that used to connect to 4g much quicker and easier and it hauled ass. The ns4g is pokey. I don't know if it's psychological or not but I thought I got better speeds on the epic and evo for 3/4g.
After running some more test on the Nexus 4G. I noticed running the speed test app gave me slower speed results then other 4G phones. But when downloading large files while tethered using bittorrent or just large files in the browsed I seen the speeds hit 700KB/s to 1MB/s which is around 9-10 Mbps. I also noticed the indicator next to battery for 4G light up 2 bars where normally it is grey for no activity and 1 bar for some activity.
Maybe Google did something new to the Nexus 4G vs other 4G phones where it attempts to save battery power by not using much speed until its actually needed. Also starting to think the 4G bars don't represent reception but might represent the speed or data being transmitted which also explains why it turns grey and green.

Used the evo up until December before I jumped to at&t. Was pulling 1-1.5mbs down consistently in my area on 3g. Now with the ns4g its my first time back since 5 months ago and I'm averaging <.5mbs down in my area on 3g! Its not the phone bc I was getting the same speeds on my temporary echo phone.
My only assumption is that within the 5 months I was gone, an assload of ppl jumped on sprint's network.

hi all. I myself have a moto atrix 4g on att. i am familiar with rooting unlocking bl and flashing. so i decided to help my friend with his nexus s 4g unrooted, locked, on stock sprint 4.0.4 build IMM76D, baseband D720SPRLC1, kernel 3.0.8.
last night I unlocked bl, rooted and installed cm9 posted by burnsra as I saw it was the most popular cm9 by replies or views. now all this started because my atrix was having double the reception compared to ns4g in everything wifi, network, data. so i thought cm9 would do something good here. but after installing it successfully the wifi signal is at 2 bars the data reception is at one bar, the 4g reception non existent.
Is there any new baseband that would enhance the reception of wifi, sprint network 3/4g?
right now I am on baseband D720SPRLC1.
test i did: i installed speedtest.net app on both phones. i was 10 feet from my home router N with no walls, doors in between. ns4g was always 5-7 mbps download, slower than atrix and almost 2mbps slower in upload.
never mind for data speed. ( i know its apple to oranges, att/sprint) but still atrix was 10 times faster on att hspa+ than ns4g on sprint with 4g on.
wifi and network bars are most of the time at 2 bars.
is there anything left to do to make it better in reception?
any ideas suggestions are welcome.
thanks
You can try different basebands. Depending on your area, whatever you flash can either improve or worsen the signal. I've heard Sprint doesn't have the greatest in terms of 4G speeds. I'm no expert on network speeds and such, but I think it also have to do with whatever technology is being used for the networks. HSPA+ is gonna be faster I believe. My G2 has faster download speeds than my NS IIRC. I haven't done a real world comparison lately. I think my G2 was getting like 10 down a few years ago on campus. Lol. My NS only gets like 5 or 6.
Actually, you answered your own question ... it is an apples to oranges comparison. Wimax download speeds of 5-7 sound about right, and uploads will be slower. There's no question that Sprint is way behind AT&T and Verizon with their advanced data networks. In the meantime, what you experienced is just about all there is for now. The LC1 radio is the most current.

There really isn't anything that can be done to make much of a difference. I flashed the latest CM9 nightly, checked my 4g speeds and they are in the 3-4 range ...and I can see the Sprint tower across the road. Most of us who are hanging onto Sprint, in spite of the service ... are doing so because of the unlimited data. But, Sprint really needs to break out the LTE soon, or there may be a massive exodus.
With Sprint, and I've had it with E4GT battery issues since ICS, but hooked on Jelly Bean from AOSP ROMs
3g is very spotty in Cincinnati, but 4G works pretty well. No LTE in my area for probably a year, so I need something with 4G to buy time, no sense in paying up for a GNEX that will only have 3G speeds. I don't do any gaming or streaming, just need JB smoothness with as little LOS as possible, and stable data connection. Are these issues with the Sprint Nexus S, and would the S be a big step backwards due to single core given my needs?
How is it in general with JB for those that have gotten the update?

So did you get your NS4G from sprint through TEP? I stopped at a couple stores and called the SERO people this morning, everybody felt that ebay or craigslist would be the only way to track one down. Don't mind doing that, but would love to have an official channel for less BS.
I'm due for an upgrade, but anything new has LTE, which won't come to my area for at least a year, but 4g is pretty solid. No sense in paying top $$$ for a phone that is only 3g due to geogrpahy. NS4g looks ideal to buy me some time.

No they took my f**ked up ET4G. They include a pre paid shipping label to send the ET4g back. You keep the Nexus S 4G. All this was done over the phone. When you get customer support. Ask for Tier 2 tech support. Make sure you tell them you have done multiple factory resets and battery life is horrible compared to gingerbread. Also tell them you OTA'd to FF18 then a week ago you got another OTA update to FH13. If you don't tell them this they will make you go to a sprint store.

I had an Epic 4G (the original, single core keyboard) and switched to a Nexus S 4G because I didn't use the keyboard and didn't like the size. I am now dumping the Nexus S 4G for a Photon or E4GT or Evo 3D or ANYTHING with dual core 4"+ screen. I have a Tegra 2 based tablet and that thing flies, with way more installed on it, compared to my Nexus S 4G. I know you said you didn't do gaming, but if you do a lot of multitasking (for example, jumping between a reading app, to a web browser, to a text message, back to a reading app) - the speed difference between a Nexus S 4G and something with a dual core CPU is pretty substantial.
Pulled the trigger, will update later this week. At first glance, I'm pretty happy. I don't mind the smaller screen, actually kind of like it. Tiny stock keyboard stinks, but Swype works fine. Both 3g and 4g speeds are back where they belong, haven't seen that since June/July pre-ICS.
First thing it wanted to do was update to JB, even before I had confirmed it was activated (it was connected to wifi). This was my problem, having seen JB, I couldn't go back to GB on the ET4G, which is apparently necessary for mine to survive a day. Too soon to say anything about battery life, aside from when I went to bed around 11 it was at 60%, woke up it was at 25%. It had wifi connection, and it had just been hard reset (stock rom for now) and activated, so surely there was a lot of settling going on. That would have killed my e4gt in an hour or so.
I do notice a bit of lag jumping from one app to another, but not enough that it bothers me. Apps and homescreen themselves are very smooth. Chrome seems a bit slow to get up and running, but works fine. All google apps want to update themselves now, maybe that will help.
Need to figure out how to wifi tether, but haven't started that yet
So far so good, will report again
