Re-Flash or Reset? - Captivate General

I did a search and didn't find what I needed...
My wife's Captivate has been just sluggish since going from 2.1 to 2.2...I wasn't sure if just doing a factory reset would be good or if I should re-flash with the stock 2.2 ROM.
Any suggestions?
Thanks...

Try clearing cache/data.
If that doesn't work, you might need to reflash.
know that stock 2.1 and 2.2 aren't smooth as butter, they work well but can lag.

I will try the cache/data option first...
I am on 2.2 and run very well...same phone...her phone just lags and lags and lags since going to 2.2
Where can I get a good, stock copy of 2.2 for the Captivate? Just use the KIES update again?

Yes, Kies will work just fine.
It could just be a bad flash or you have too much "junk" on the phone and a little cleaning could help.
Either way, try both and let us know how it went

If you're running a custom ROM (didn't really specify that you were or not) I would boot into recovery CWM, and do the following:
- Wipe Cache
- Wipe Dalvik
- Convert /system and /data to ext4 from RFS (using either voodoo lagfix or Universal Lag Fix, depending on your ROM/Kernel combination).
I doubt there will be a need to re-flash...

[Q]phone reset

Im currently on the original leaked USCC Froyo rom and am have alot of issue. I was wonders...
a. should I reinstall this rom to fix issues
b. will I need to revert back to stock, root, install clock work then upgrade?
c. Is there alot of people having issue with the froyo build?
issues im experiencing are lag, freezing, issue where standby button randomly takes screen shots, and a few other random issues
what should I do?
First thing I would is redownload the rom and reflash it. That is usually the easiest fix. Are you still having problems? Will try to help you where I can!
K ill redownload it and reinstall it and see if it helps
Reinstalled leaked froyo plus I installed the red CMW and voodoo.
Havent played around to much but I have noticed it runs alittle faster but thats prolly because the lagfix. still having some freezing though
What exactly is freezing? Certain apps or when you try to do certain things?
its freezes in both some times it freezes when im trying to play music sometime it freezes when im texting sometimes it right when the phone boots. it seems completely random and never had any of these errors on enclair with CMW and voodoo.
You may want to try a reset on it next. Make sure you back up everything with titanium first tho. Factory reset option in recovery. You may have to do this after a reflash tho. You may also need to wipe the dalvik cache before a new flash too. Those are the things I would try if you are still having issues.
Also be careful which things you back up with titaniun, I've read restoring certain data onto a new rom can cause issues like that

thanks for the replies I just went ahead and installed the newwer E16 rom which is running much better

Youtube Lag

Hi Everyone,
So recently YouTube updated to version 2.4.4, and apparently, videos launch with considerable lag that locks up the device. I've tried every rom with every kernel and they all behave the same. Maybe Titanium Backup? But it worked before...
1. Anybody else getting this?
2. Any solutions?
Wait I just installed RolleTube (version 2.1.6) and it still lags. Now I'm seriously wondering what's wrong.
something is wrong on a system level. try a fix permissions in cwm

Well, the even weirder thing is that when I just install a ROM, TiBu, and run youtube, there's no lags. Then when I reboot (because of battery or something), the lag reappears. Fix Permissions seems to be locking up in the middle of the process, and I have to hard shutoff to get the device back working. Funny thing is that youtube worked fine like a month ago...

Did that already... Even wiped my internal 16gb. Darkside wipe, fix permission, etc. etc. didn't work - still there.
Also: it seems Go Launcher also has some problems with YouTube's lag... the widget on Go Launcher lags to launch the video on the widget, while twlauncher doesn't have that (as much). Still has crazy device-locking lags though.
EDIT: Oh wow... it seems when I connect my phone to my PC it shows up as a corrupted disk... Windows is asking me if I want to fix the disk. Would that be the problem? And if it is, can I let Windows fix the disk?
I don't think I would let windows do that. It says corrupted or needs formatted?

Ok. Boot into odin and reflash cwm 5.0.2.6. Boot into cwm and format system, then data, the cache and dalvik cache. Repeat 3x. Flash stock through odin. Reboot, twice. Now reflash cwm and then flaah a rom and configure. I don't care what your problem is, that method is a guarantee fix lol

I did this, and I still had lag after restoring TiBu. Lol the look on my face when it happened
But turns out, the TiBu backup of Go Launcher was actually screwing many apps up (including YouTube)... dunno if it was a system issue, but it was the problem. Transitioned to ADW after a full wipe again (without ever launching go launcher) and all was good. Thanks guys.

Don't restore stuff across roms with TiBu. I only use it as a reference of the apps I had. So I always have a clean slate

glad u got it sorted. And while I agree with xcrazydx thay starting clean is best, I have too many apps and not enough time, so thag metgod is impractical. I've never had this ssort of problem though to be honest

[Q] doubt about ICS then Back Froyo

Pd: even if you are using a custom rom.. does Kies have to recognize my phone?.. because mine doesnt..

1st i wouldnt recoment using Kies to anything with the Infuse
2nd read up on how to use Odin or Heimdall for the infuse
theyre the quickest and possibly the safest ways to jump from diff firmware
3rd GB BL shouldnt affect anything once you have the GB ones i believe
but i strongly recommend either Heimdall and Odin
Search GTG Ultimate Unbrick
and why froyo when you ve got amazing GB Roms and a pretty good ICS rom??
just curious
After flashing ICS if you want to go back to froyo/gb simply use Heimdall one click/Odin. Done and done. I've done it several times, no errors, no consequences

Malisiousintent's post above is perhaps the best way to go back from CM9. Here is an alternate way that may be more comfortable for some (respectfully submitted) After wiping data, cache, and dalvik as usual go to mounts and storage and format system, data, and cache. (You can not do a restore at this point) Do a fresh install of the rom you want to go back to and reboot. If you do not have a restore then set it up as you wish and you are good to go. If you have a restore, skip through the setup, let the media scanners finish then reboot into recovery. Wipe only cache and dalvik - go to backup and restore and choose the rom to restore. Obviously it will be a version that you customized of the fresh install you just did. Reboot and all will be like it was pre- ICS. Have done this and it works fine.
You can't go all the way back to Froyo from ICS - there is no way to revert the bootloaders. You can go back to Gingerbread easily.
"stock" on the Infuse is now Gingerbread anyway, now that UCLB3 is official.

Stock jelly bean very laggy, should I switch to cyanogen mod?

I'm running stock jb and sadly its very laggy and many taps will result in many second of waiting. Even Google search takes ages to start.
Are the cyanogen Roms better? Is there already a working cm10 rom available?

I would give Jellybro a try. Seems to be fairly popular ROM based on CM10
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1791751
Make sure you make a nandroid backup and know how to flash beforehand.
i agree! jellybro is the sastest jb rom here !
I'm using paranoidandroid 1.9.5 its very smooth and fast but WiFi tethering is not working

Since you need to wipe the phone either way, have you tried a factory reset yet? It's worth a shot. You never said whether or not you did. But if you're looking for more features all baked in, go with a custom ROM
I think CM9 is still faster overall although it isn't buttery smooth like JB or CM10.

My boot loader is already unlocked so I shouldn't have to wipe for root, right? I'm just not sure if CM10 is worth it. Don't know if nexus s is capable of keeping it fast with Android 4.x...
You should try the jellybro rom because its super fast.

Try doing a full wipe/system reset. My Nexus S OTA to JB a few weeks ago. Even at stock, it was fast. No lag.
If you are experiencing lags, it is likely your phone's filled with resource contending stuff.
BTW, I've seen flashed in CMREX Beta9 JB. Boot up is insanely fast. Everything works.
Also you can try the V6 Supercharger mod. It helped my other phone - Gingerbread equipped XT615 Motoluxe speed up quite nicely.

Mine runs very well on JB. You're already rooted and whatnot, all you need to do is backup via recovery. Properly wipe the phone and flash. There's a few 4.1 ROMs out there. Give them a shot and see what you like. The phone is still pretty quick despite its age. Like I said. The phone may just need to be cleaned up. I've never had mine lag, personally.
Should I wipe SD partition too? It takes ages to backup the SD partition to a PC first...doesn't seem to support USB 2.0...
I would try a factory reset first to see what happens...

From my understanding just do a factory reset/wipe, wipe the dalvik cache and then flash your ROM.

First try change kernel..
Nocerino's Rulez with RAScarlo's ROM features TriNitY
I've had the same issue and came here to see if others shared. JB was initially pretty solid (I initially did a full wipe), but now it lags real bad. Google Now is the worst offender. It takes at least 5 seconds to appear, and then a good chunk of time to allow me to input text. It's too much.
I'm going to keep looking for another ROM, but honestly, I was counting on the fact that stock would be the most reliable. I've also had trouble using my radio to make calls / use data. I'm disappointed as I figured these problems were previously mostly due to custom ROMs. All I want is a stable, simple ROM that functions consistently.
Google Now was fast for me initially but it's super slow now but I doubt this is a ROM issue.
Everything else is fast and smooth.

I think its time to upgrade...just waiting for a nexus without pentile screen.
Do a full wipe, clear cache
This is the best time to check as many roms as possible. no need to worry about losing anything as you should of backed it all up by now. So clean slate and try some different Roms. To say stock is laggy does sound strange. So back up everything, even whats on your SD.
Clean start.
Best backup program to save apps and data - Titanium backup
Best app for everything else (app manager, processes etc..) - Romtoolbox.
Now go have fun!
try Xenonhd v6.0 and Air kernel JB weekly.
My phone is better than new with this combo. I am not going to try anything else until these give me a serious issue (I dont think they will)

[Q] trying to upgrade to newer os

so I am rooted and have superuser access. trying to get ics on this thing and from what ive read you have to go to gb then to ics. so i downloaded cm7 to get to ginger bread. everything flashed fine but when rebooting from recovery its just hanging at the samsung logo. sorry if i sound like a noob. im really not, i just have a galaxy nexus so i haven't rooted a non nexus phone in a very long time. especially one still running froyo. any info would be a huge help

Have you tried booting back into recovery and flashing the same rom once more?
Also, did you make sure to wipe all data, cache, dalvik cache and such before flashing the rom?
My suggestion: use heimdall one-click uclb3, and preferably also flash GB bootloaders (to avoid rainbows in ics or jb recovery). Flash Entropy's dd kernel which will give you red cwm, and from there you are ready to flash ICS.

No luck? =(
Give Andros' suggestion a go. Even with bootloops, you can still put your Infuse in Download Mode to use Hemdall or Odin.

Before you go and bite my head off, listen
first time i was upgrading a rom, i thought i was at a samsung boot logo freeze, and it took my phone around 20 minutes to fully upgrade, if this isnt your problem, then i miss understood, and recently, ive started using odin, and it is much easier than using the cmw
Reading and research is always the answer to everything.
