1st i wouldnt recoment using Kies to anything with the Infuse
2nd read up on how to use Odin or Heimdall for the infuse
theyre the quickest and possibly the safest ways to jump from diff firmware
3rd GB BL shouldnt affect anything once you have the GB ones i believe
but i strongly recommend either Heimdall and Odin
Search GTG Ultimate Unbrick
and why froyo when you ve got amazing GB Roms and a pretty good ICS rom??
just curious
After flashing ICS if you want to go back to froyo/gb simply use Heimdall one click/Odin. Done and done. I've done it several times, no errors, no consequences

Malisiousintent's post above is perhaps the best way to go back from CM9. Here is an alternate way that may be more comfortable for some (respectfully submitted) After wiping data, cache, and dalvik as usual go to mounts and storage and format system, data, and cache. (You can not do a restore at this point) Do a fresh install of the rom you want to go back to and reboot. If you do not have a restore then set it up as you wish and you are good to go. If you have a restore, skip through the setup, let the media scanners finish then reboot into recovery. Wipe only cache and dalvik - go to backup and restore and choose the rom to restore. Obviously it will be a version that you customized of the fresh install you just did. Reboot and all will be like it was pre- ICS. Have done this and it works fine.
You can't go all the way back to Froyo from ICS - there is no way to revert the bootloaders. You can go back to Gingerbread easily.
"stock" on the Infuse is now Gingerbread anyway, now that UCLB3 is official.

I flashed the Octane ROM and now have the rainbow screen. I am told I need to flash a Gingerbread bootloader but I cant figure out a 100% sure way of doing this. I have read I also need some sort of kernel just not sure what one. All I did to the phone so far was get clockwork recovery working and flash the Octane ROM. Sorry for the noobish question but I am completely new to these Samsungs and theyre a little more involved than the HTC's I have previously worked with.

I'm guessing you're coming from Froyo. You should check out the SGS 4G Bible here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117554. Look under ODIN ROMs and install Chadster's KG4 ROM (last one listed). That's the first GB ROM to have the bootloaders on it. After that, you should be able to drop whatever other GB ROM you want on it.

Excellent thank you! Could I backup the current ROM in clockwork recovery, flash Chadster's KG4 then just restore my backup? Or would that also restore my old bootloader? The phone is my girlfriends and she just got it setup the way she likes and I would hate for her to have to do it all over again. Shes not as patient as I am when it comes to this kinda stuff.
I believe that would be ok

No worries. Glad to help. Did it all work?
If you're coming from Froyo, DO NOT advanced restore your data on a GB ROM!
That will cause multiple issues on your phone. One of them being no incoming phone calls.
In order to move from Froyo to GB, your only option is to use Titanium Backup. Backup all user apps and data and restore them when you're on GB.
GB to GB is fine, but you must flash the Bali kernel (yes, it is a Froyo kernel) to perform an advanced data restore. You must be sure to flash the kernel back to a GB kernel afterwards. If not, you will be in a boot loop.
As for keeping HOMESCREEN settings and such, unless if your girlfriend has a custom launcher on, like ADW or LauncherPro, you will have to manually set up everything again.
In terms of PHONE settings, you'll have to set up everything again.
I hope you see this post before flashing, or else you'll have to reflash everything for your girlfriend!

I assume by advanced restore you mean some sort of restoring through Clockwork Recovery?
I only use Titanium Backup for backup and restore of apps. So backing up the apps on Froyo and restoring them on the GB ROM through Titanium is fine correct? I hope so cause I have already done this once lol.
She does use ADW EX so restoring that wont be an issue.
So If I just backup all the apps with Titanium, then flash the ROM+Bootloader mentioned above, then restore the apps with Titanium Backup it should be fine?
I assume doing this would not have changed the kernel at all. Should I flash some sort of GB kernel while im at it?
I really appreciate all your guys help on this one. Im more nervous about doing this stuff cause the phone isnt mine lol. If it were mine I would be flashing all day long! But in this case I want to get it right the first time.
Just an update. I did the above and it fixed up the rainbow screen. Thank you all for your help. I couldnt have done it without you guys. GF is now happy with her newly updated Octane rom

That's great! Glad to hear we could help. Best of luck!
I've had absolutely no luck upgrading from KD1 to offiical GB.
I started off with the official KD1 (from Kies) that I have been running for months.
The only mods are root and CWM.Kies downloads the GB update (taking several minutes) then immediately comes up with the screen saying my phone could not be updated. It leaves the phone in download mode.
If I reboot I'm back to where I was.
Taking a suggestion in another thread, I cleared data and cache, and tried again.
Same result.
Taking another suggestion, I Odin'd another KD1 on top of my original. Same result.
Taking another suggestion, I Odin'd a KC1 on top hoping that Kies would upgrade me to official KD1 or GB. However, Kies took one look and said there was no upgrade.
I've Odin'd back to KD1, so after a lot of work I'm back to where I started.
Any ideas?

First you would need gingerbread bootloaders if you have them then flash away, if not you will need to odin kg4 for the bootloaders then drhonks kernel for root then flash kj6 from cwm.

I probably will, but I also would like to find out why I can't Kies the stock GB Rom. Obviously Kies doesn't like something it sees on the phone.
There is another issue I'm fighting at the same time. Until now I didn't have a data plan and just used wifi for data. I just got a data plan and haven't been able to get the phone to use it (just voice/text). I want to put the phone into a completely stock condition to try and eliminate variables, and possibly get T-mobile to help. I also feel that what ever Kies doesn't like might be a factor with the cell data issue.
Kies is potentially bad news for your phone if you've been on a custom ROM. If it doesn't work smoothly on the first try don't try and force it. What inevitably happens is that in a sudden rush to get it to work you start flashing one ROM after another (something you wouldn't normally do) and end up issues. There have been a bunch of posts about losing recovery and download modes as people start trying to flash back to froyo from GB. A buddy of mine just jacked his phone up so bad doing this...no recovery, no download, couldn't get it to adb boot on his Linux box. I finally got it into download mode with an adb/odin circus trick, hail Mary, and odined ravers hawk.zip to clean everything up. There is no way i want to go through that again, and there is no real logic in the way we fixed it, but it all started with a bad flash from kies. To any one reading this, USE THE CWM FLASHABLE THAT RAVER MADE IN THE DEV FORUM, take advantage of their knowledge and hard work and save yourself (and your sgs4g) some heartache.

I would use ODIN to reinstall Dr Honks KJ1. it will give you CWM and You should be OK. It might have just been a fluke on install the first time
Still no wifi "f.m.l"!!!
Everything works accept wifi reinstalled kj1 kernel frs, wiped down phone completley even used odin again to reinstall 2.3.6 official from ravers post and nothing ive done everything 2 or 3 times the sameway even tried different usb slot i used odin 1.85 i just dont get it anyone else got this problem
As ignorant as this sounds, I had the same problem once. I rebooted my wireless router & it started working again.

I just wanted to thank everyone for the help with my previous question. Now that I got that fixed, I have another question regarding Titanium Backup Pro and Clock Work Mod for the galaxy S 4G. I downloaded the key for the Titan. Backup to make it Pro. I installed Titan. backup fine no problem. Them when I try to install the key that would make it Pro, a popup came up that said: "Titan. Backup Pro cannot be installed. Free up some space and try again." Well I searched around and found that I should clear the dalvik cache using Clock Work Mod.
My question is how would I install Clock Work Mod on my device and How would I go about clearing the davlik cache using Clock Work Mod?
Are there going to be problem after clearing the davlik cache? And if further on along the line, I want to flash ROM's, should I clear my davlik cache every time just to be safe?
Thank you for the help if you guys/gals can help out.
First off are you running a custom rom? Or are you running stock?
Is your phone rooted?
I am running stock ROM Froyo. Yes, it is rooted.
I'll have to leave it to somebody else to help. so long since I've run froyo... That I wouldn't know were to start lol... plus at the moment I am driving

Do we have clockwork recovery kernels for froyo?
I was wondering about flashing a ROM like the ICS port, the AOKP one. But I figured that it would be a lot safer if I had a backup of all my data first so I decided to get Titan. Backup. to do the job. and that was what landed me where I am right now.
Any help would be appreciated.

In case you are unaware, you cannot use the guide in the first post as Kies mini will not recognize rooted phones.
To be honest I wouldn't worry about all that if you end up going with gingerbread or ice cream sandwich just go for it
Ah, the thing is I'm also interested in Titan.'s other feature's like freezing apps and stuff like that. Add to that the fact that I bought the app already that would make the regular version turn into the Pro version.
My bad Lumin,i actually was unaware. Think this would work, right lumin?

I'm on aokp but going to ics,cm9,aokp straight from froyo is going to be a shocker

If you have bought titanium backup pro you should have gotten a file emailed to you that you put on your sdcard. Once its there just run regular TiB as its the same but the license will unlock other features.
As for keeping data across the different os's I personally dont recommend saving anything but non system apps. If you want to save texts use sms backup and restore from the play store. Otherwise start fresh that way you dont introduce new bugs into the phone.

Gremlin Remover or Heimdall KJ6 One-Click. The reason is they will both flash bootloaders for you. I referred the OP to the Heimdall One-Click guide because of the more detailed directions and pictures.
So I should just flash a ROM like GB or the AOKP Team Acid ROM anyway right and forget about Froyo? Then install Clock Work Mod on my device or does Clock Work Mod come with the ROM's themselves? If I flash a new ROM, will my dalvik cache be cleared so that I would have enough space to install things? How would I be able to save my contacts, just save them to my SIM card and they should be fine right? Would flashing a new ROM take up my phones internal memory?

You need to flash a gb rom with bootloaders if you are on froyo. Otherwise you will be back upset your phone is broke.
A custom recovery is included in all roms. Once you flash part of the instructions are to factory reset/ data wipe in recovery.
Back you contacts up to the sdcard if you dont use google contacts otherwise you wont be able to access them from the ICS variants.
Yes like I stated when installing a new rom part of it is doing a factory reset/data wipe.
If you really do want to stay on Froyo and you want CWM... then this should work for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099374
But yeah, you should definitely consider upgrading to Gingerbread asap, *especially* if you're wanting to flash custom ROMs later on down the line. Use the Heimdall One-Click sticked in the development forum.
Eollie i bought tb pro and all that's done is it applies as an app nothing different than when you get tb originally from the market
Lol if you do gremlin remover one click you don't have to make an extra step of flashing a cwr kernel.
As I'm aware heimdall doesn't do it
Hello - I tried to update my phone from Infuse v2.2.3 to Th3Bill JB 3.3.2 and got in an endless loop. I then tried to go into recovery mode and do a restore. Checked the MD5, Erased boot and then started restoring boot image and thats where she has been sitting for some time. I will pull batter and attempt again however I may be hosed. Any help greatly appreciated.
It is not possible, that I am aware of, to go from Froyo straight to JB. You will also not be able to restore a backup at this point due to changes made on the phone in the borked attempt. You should be able to wipe data, cache, and dalvik, and after a couple of attempts re- install a Froyo rom from scratch. If you can't do that, do this.

Thanks to qkster and Entropy for this.
I had that issue as well. Only cause I like to see if I can be done. But no. What I do is go back to stock and rooted then flash a ICS ROM then make sure it boots. Then go wipe all stuff in cwm and flash jelly

Hey Pony, I was on the custom ROM Infuse v2.2.3 and not stock Froyo. I ended up doing the gtg ultimate unbrick to bring it back to stock and then did the full back to Infuse v2.2.3 and then did a nandroid restore. Everything looks good but it is acting a bit weird. Like I will try to open my applications or folders it sometimes hangs. I consistantly get it to free up by locking the phone and then unlocking it. Weird huh? Anyway I would be interested in trying to upgrade to JB but would like more instruction on that. Thanks for responding and if you can recommend anything that might help Im all ears.
See the post below - if you need more specific instructions let me know.
Thanks rkkaranrk.
Use Odin or heimdll to get stock GB Tom and then from there u can flash any rom u like just follow the instructions in the OP. You can go directly from GB to ICS but for JB u have to flash any ICS rom first and then JB.
Read the instructions on every thread.

Ok, I flashed something that wasn't for my sgs2 skyrocket and when I did it nothing happened, then when I rebooted it it seemed ok untill it kept freezing, no sound even on full val. I cant call because I cant here the other person and that it freezes on every app I open it takes like 2mins to open or a force close comes up. Well I have flashed back to stock using odin but still the same problem. I dont know what to do? Any thoughts about fixing this?

If you have flashed back to stock, and are still having the same issues it sounds like there may be a hardware problem. Did you do a full clean flash back to stock? (system wipe, clear the dalvik)
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
Why would you flash something not for the Skyrocket?
Wipe the phone completely, as in all data, the system, caches, and repeat that wipe three times in recovery, then power down. Go into download mode and restore to GB stock (yes, all the way back), then use Kies to do the ICS update and stay stock for a few days to make sure everything works after that.
If it's still not working after that, your hardware is jacked. Restore the thing back to GB, pull the cord out during the ICS update on Kies and finish the job. Hope you're still in warranty; if not, I hear you can get a used Captivate for $60 or so while you learn not to flash stuff for the wrong phone.
in stock recovery wipe caches and do a reset, if still a no go, install cwm, wipe caches and reset x3, reflash stock firmware with odin again, perform a reset, if still a no go then hw malfunction
Well someone's lazy...
