coming from "sense" and "tw" devices i became spoiled by the dialer option of using the t9 to look up my numbers as it is a lot easier to type someone's name rather then memorizing their number or having to scroll through your contact list. If you like using the "sense" or the "tw" method then I suggest you look up "Go Contacts" and the best part is its FREE.
I used to use Dialer One.
VERY good phone app that gets updated often. It has several options like saving numbers which aren't saved and T9 dialing.
I used to use it religiously but now I just do voice search, "Call Dad Mobile". Seems to work easier and faster; especially while driving.
[EDIT]
It's free also.
great app thanks
i love all the go app great developer
I've been trying out Youlu which has a dialer/sms/contacts app in one. I like it, but the sms app doesn't auto-correct words when you type. Plus some people don't like having the sms app tied to the dialer + contacts.

Go Contacts
I give all of the go dev team apps thumbs up. First they are free, Second they are extremely flexible in the options and setup areas. The only one I am not using right now is the go launcher just because the sock one is so friking fast I hate to slow it down at all. Not that the go launcher is slow but it just cant match the stock.
My wife like the look of my contacts screen and dialer so much she is now using go contacts on her phone as well.
I have been using a Vibrant. The contacts/dialer app on the Samsung Galaxy S line is excellent. But the functionality I really am looking for on my G2X, is the ability to text a phone number, directly out of the contact app.
For example, I want to text Henry's mobile phone number to Fred. In the Samsung, I would go to Henry's contact, long-press his mobile phone number, and text that to Fred. Very clean and efficient.
Is there an app I can load on my G2X that provides the same functionality?

i had a vibrant so i know what you mean ... go dialer/contact does that and has more options and thems! def worth checking out
side note ; go products are great! i use go launcher, sms, weather and dialer! of course there not as fast as stock but the look and customization trumps stock or even launcher pro plus
I tried Go Contacts, and though it is a nice dialer, it does not offer the features that I described. If I long-press a mobile number, it assumes I want to text that person. If I had wanted to text that person, I would have long-pressed on the "message" icon on that number, not the number directly.
Or am I missing something obvious?
Long press on the number then select the option "send contact". That's the only thing I could think off.

that works! Thanks!

Hi Guys,
Is there any good phonebooks apps around? i dont like the stock 2.1 on my Sony Xperia. Something that has good UI and looks really nice themes. I tried Phonebooks 2.0 which is ok but is there something else better?
thanks
You could try this:

Dang, I saw the title and was just about to post that but you beat me to it Haha.
I really like Contapps.
The best thing about it, is that you can manually link contacts with their Facebook and Twitter accounts.
So, if you have a friend called Robert Smith, but his Facebook screen-name is "Bob Smith"; you can manually attach the contacts.
It also has handwriting recognition. You just draw a letter S with your finger on the screen, and the bottom of the screen opens up like a chalkboard. The recognition gets better the more you use it.
It'll also add Facebook profile photos to your phone's contacts. Once a contact's linked, just long-press on the small profile-pic icon on the right of the Facebook window.
It's completely amazing. I use it as my main phonebook now.
Go Contacts is a great app
Hi all
I'm looking to find an app that combines the best features of dialers and the android (or is it samsung?) contacts app.
Basically, i love being able to open up the dialer, and type in the name on an alphanumeric keyboard which is open on default. This means to find a name takes about a second, and about 2 or 3 strokes of a key.
BUT, all dialers i have tried, once you click on the contact, open up the contact, and then you still have to click "call" and "yes, i am freaking sure!".
I LOVE the feature on my stock contacts app for swiping left to message and right to call. I want that feature in a dialer app to minimize the effort required to call or sms.
Anyone able to recommend a good app that makes calling and messaging contacts a breeze?
Thanks in advance!
JonAlex
Try AContact. It has a few settings that you can fiddle with and is pretty fast.
Im using go contacts since month... its good. serves my purpose. And It got what you want if I understand properly.

Nope, you can't swipe to dial or message in Go contact
I'd go for "Dialer One", but it's a matter of taste.
I'd ALSO go for dialer one.. in fact i used dialer one for a while.. but i didn't like:
1. No swipe to dial/message function, meaning that it was not an ideal replacement for stock contacts
2. Shows all numbers of a contact as separate contacts. I have 6 friends called matt, which means when i type in matt, it shows me over 20 phone numbers for matts. fail.
I will give go contacts a try...
Is the only reason why the swipe to dial/call function has not been added to all these dialers because the devs haven't thought of it? if so, what a huge oversight. If not, why not??
If the stock contacts app opened with an alphanumberic keyboard, i would consider it the best dialer.
Keep suggestions rolling people!

AFAIK, the stock SGS 'dialer' can search for contact name. like say matt, you can dial in 6288 (for matt). however, a little problem with the dialer is that you can't swipe to call except for log and favourite list.
The stock contact include a search bar at the top when you open it. It should do what you want to do.
Have you tried RocketDialer?
i tried rocket dialer today. it does have some nice features, although having a price isn't one of them. I live in South Africa and can't pay for these things cos google wont let me!
I really like the look and feel of the stock contact app, and could easily replace the dialer with an alphanumeric keyboard, but the reality is that having to hit the searchbar, and then type in someone's name on a portrait qwerty keyboard doesn't make me happy like the T9 dialers.
I would PAY (if i could) if someone tweaked the stock contacts app to include a dialer.
I've seen a couple of people asking for alternative dialer recommendations - especially those using non-Sense ROMs (CM7, AOSP, etc). I switched from Android Revolution (with Sense) to CM7 last week and was definitely missing the predictive dialing. Tried a couple of different Market dialers, and found that I like GO Dialer the best. Combined with GO Contacts, it does everything Sense did, and more. Lots of skins available (I prefer the simplest but there are some pretty colorful ones).
This also led me to try other GO Team apps, and I really like GO SMS over the stock Messaging app. It has more of an iOS-style interface (one of the only iOS styles I prefer over Android) with the side-to-side speech bubbles.
I also went with the GO Weather widget - it's kind of a Sense-style clock/weather module, and provides really detailed conditions and forecast info. I don't like the font used, and would love to have the animated weather wake-up function (my daughter loves the windshield wiper), but what ya expect for free uh?
These products could be better, but they're some of the best free apps I've found for non-Sense ROMs.
+1 on Go SMS
and
+1 on Go Contacts/Dialer
I have always been a fan of the Go SMS app, and just recently snagged Go Dialer... It is awesome!
I use Go SMS and Go Dialer, Go Contacts and I'm on a sense ROM.
I even switch to Go Laucher Ex when I'm bored with Sense...I like it better than ADW Ex and I paid for the full version. Go Launcher has a Theme Creator that they released and there are some really nice Go Launcher Themes coming out.
Go Keyboard and Go Weather are still buggy...but I think will be alright once they get it worked out.
Go Widgets..meh.

Havent' tried that - I picked up FlexT9 when it was free on the Amazon App Store, and I love it - great speech recognition, Swype-like tracing, and stylus-type 'writing'. Also numbers and special characters on long-press... I'll have to write up a separate recommendation on that one, or ++ if there's an existing one.
The only thing I miss vs. the HTC keyboard is the directional buttons for moving the cursor around. Without a trackball, it's sometimes a pain to move around a text field...
Oh yeah, GO launcher Ex, Go SMS, and go Dialer and Contacts..
Must haves. Go Launcher is my Favorite.
Go dialer is a must have on asop roms.

I have some trouble getting the international calls made by Google Voice with Go Dialer. Any thought?

Report it as a bug, there is a feedback option.
Agreed. GO SMS Pro, GO Contacts and Dialer are all great applications. Definitely worth checking out.
Lets not forget about Go keyboard, they just added the swip feature to it. Tried several keyboards and Go is hands down for me.
Does anyone know if GO SMS Pro can be themed white on black?

Just have to wonder what go is using as a business model. All this great software for free.

Possibly they are waiting to be noticed by one of the major phone makers. Maybe they will design a phone around it. The GoPhone. lol.

I do not think GO SMS has that capability, at least I did not notice it when I was using it. I am a very big fan of the GO Launcher and other things from the dev team. However for my messaging app I use chomp SMS. Chomp lets you customize just about every aspect of thier software and it retains the droid emoticons instead of replacing them with Normal looking ones.
Is there a way to get the contacts back to a more "stock android" feel? The touchwiz format just seems inefficient and the call/ text buttons are just too small... the whoel thing seems like a giant waste of screen space!
I agree, the dialer/contact app is a big piece of junk on touchwiz.
I would recommend just using a different app, which you can easily install from the market. I really love exDialer - I just downloaded it a few days ago and I feel it works really well and looks much better than the regular dialer.
There are many apps for this, a popular one being Go! Contacts, but I found exDialer to be the best looking out of all of them. Start-up time is also very fast, which is important!
I felt the same way until I learned swipe contact from left to right to call and from right to left to send txt.

Loving the slide action thing... thanks for the tip!

Yeah I agree. exDialer is based off of MIUI's dialer and it's the best. It also uses the same framework for it's contacts app (it comes with the dialer app when you download from play store).
But does anybody actually use the contact app? I love the smart find on the dialer so I never really have to use the contact app for anything.
Verizons sucks imo. Everytime I try to change a color of a text bubble for my conversations the **** never ****ing saves. Also with the new lollipop update my group.me app has a little dialog box that scrolls down from the top of the screen and shows me the first 7 or so words of the persons message with the ability to reply and or like their comment, I was wondering if any of you know of a texting app with this capability. thanks
Textra
I use evolve, I love being able to reply from the status bar and swipe through different message feeds with quick swipe in for the conversation list. It's also very customizable.
Hangouts. I find it pretty good. Previously had used Handcent but since Hangouts integerates sms, mms and voice, it works great for me.
