ROMing It - HTC Inspire 4G

Just some basic questions for you frequent ROMers. Note up front, I'm currently running a rooted Inspire with Sensed LeeDroid. I've also tried No-Sense LeeDroid and CM7.
First, if you're running Sensed Gingerbread, what are you running and why? This is the thing I want the most right now, but I'm so tempted to just wait until an official Gingerbread build comes out for the Inspire and someone makes a ROM off that. Frankly, I'm mostly just interested in the nifty UI enhancements at the moment (Overscroll glow, CRT screen-off, etc.). I know that's rather superficial of me, but there's not really anything else about Gingerbread that I know of at the moment. If there were ways to get these things in Froyo, I'd likely just do that for now.
All that said, please try to convert me, I'm interested. I do really prefer sense for now though, having tried out a couple ROMs without it.
Also, what is your usual process for getting your phone back the way you like it after a new ROM is installed? Some of you flash ROMs very regularly, and for me it is SUCH a pain in the butt restoring everything. The app restoring is tedious, as it requires you to click buttons for each app. And I do find remaking my home screen setups tedious as well. Do you guys just suck it up and do it?

for app restore, buy Titanium backup. BATCH restore rocks. I do have to redo my screens but to me that's not a big deal because I don't keep much on them.
I'm running CM7 right now.

I did do a batch restore the last time I did a ROM and it was a pain in the butt. It sent me to the Android app install screen for every app and asked me to confirm installation. It was like pulling teeth...

[Q] CM7 or Android Revolution?

Hey guys!
Wanted to know what you guys prefer/are using - Android Revolution or CM7 on your Inspire. Currently I'm using the stock rooted ROM and I'm loving it. I was using Android Revolution, but the tinny sound was unbearable for me after a while. Now that there's a fix for both AR and CM7, what do you recommend I flash? I don't mind Sense at all, but GB sounds pretty nice as well.
Opinions? Thanks!
I started with revolution but moved on to cm and will probably stay till some 2.3 roms come out, for no real reason I just "have" to have the latest os, always have... windows ME almost ruined my life
I think u have to ask ur self if u really enjoy sense or not... I personally love it after coming from the xperia x10's timescale ui, but if u don't then cm7 all the way for speed cuz it zips... plus u could use the colorize widget to get a sense like feel on cm7
How is battery life on CM7?
I like cm7 but I like the fact more that HTC sense downloads high quality FB images for my contacts. I dont think there is a way to do that on CM7, just the horrible quality images. That is what made me go back to sense... That along with the cm7 keyboard is tiny compared to the htc one.. Im sure I could find an apk somewher for it, but Ill just stick to sense for now.

Download the GB Keyboard from the market. The free one is bigger than the CM one and if you pay $.99 you get even more customization. Not saying this to try to get you to switch though. I even used it on Sense. It seems to be the best kb out there right now.
I noticed that CM7 was just released. I'm on Revolution and love it. CM7 makes me a bit nervous though. Install directions say to pick a radio to install, but then say that if you pick the wrong one you will brick your phone. That scares me. I didn't have to do that with Revolution. Are there benefits to CM7 that out-weigh that risk though? I can't find out a whole lot in the way of a comparison between CM7 and Revolution. I'd love to hear from people that have tried both to see what their impressions were.

Obviously you have a radio installed so it's not an issue. If you are rocking the stock radio just do a full wipe and flash CM7 and you will be good to go. I did that and then changed my radio and everything has always worked well for me. The battery for me isnt too bad and I haven't run into many issues that bother me. I LOVE having CM7/Vanilla Android on this phone. CM7 also has built in capabilities to OC up to 1.5Ghz.
I liked cm7 and it might be a little faster but .......the reason i got the inspire 4g is cause of the screen size. I get alot of MMS slide shows and on cm7 the pictures are TINY unless you want to go to the trouble of saving them to get a full screen pic. With that being said I'll stick to AR for now so I get full screen MMS slide show pics like the stock htc rom did.
So, since I already have a working radio on Revolution, can I just back up the ROM with Tibu and then use Rom Manager to install CM7 to check it out?

Also wondering about this. Currently have CM7 and have it set up just how I like it. If I do a tibu backup of user apps and system data, can I install another ROM, then go back to CM7, restore backup, and have everything like it is now?

Use Nandroid too. Restore that, then apps ONLY with TiBu, not system data.
I used Rom Manager to backup my current system and then Tibu to backup all existing apps and data. Went back to Rom Manager and told it to download CM7. It installed great. Tibu put all my apps back as well. I see three BIG advantages to CM7 over Revolution so far. First, it seems MUCH faster. Second, it allows me to sync my Splash ID to my desktop. That was impossible with the stock ROM (both before and after rooting) as well as with Revolution. It also runs the Fox News app, something else that would never run on prior ROMs. Finally, I love all the new settings. There are a lot more configuration options available than on Revolution or even the rooted stock rom that I started with. All in all, I think I'll be sticking with CM7 for a while.
At first i put CM7 on my inspire...Hate it...after few hours was very slow...I removed it and using now android revolution 3.3...Very very happy...good battery life...
That's odd. I had the exact opposite experience. Of course I was using Revolution 4, but CM7 seems to be a whole lot faster for me. Only issues I've had with it so far is that I keep losing some of my App Tray folders in Go Launcher EX. But I'm also running a beta of that, so no telling where the problem lies.

i downloaded the latest nightly CM rom. few things were very odd. first when you attach usb cable the only supported mode was charge only. to transfer file i had to manually take out microsd card. that was a big for me...second after few hours my phone started crawling...i have inspire 4g

With mine, it DEFAULTS to charge only, but when you tap on that in the notifications, you are given the option to mount the SD. And I'd make sure to reset the battery stats and give it some time (a full day?) and then look at what is using up your battery and CPU. I too had some sluggishness until I found that a certain utility that I had downloaded but never set up or used was chewing up 50% of my battery. Once I deleted it, I was fine.
been using revo. my favorite.

Have you tried a Sense cleaned up (bloatware) ROM? In any case, you might want to use Titanium to at least freeze some of the bloatware apps. You should still be able to get the OTA 2.3 update if/when HTC/TMo finally gets around to it.
I am not sure if being rooted will prevent that.
root on stock ROM shouldnt prevent it. although you will probably lose root. good idea to wait to update and see what the devs say about any new update. losing root to a new update isnt cool because you never know how long it will take for some one to figure out how to root again.
I am with you. I have not tried nor want to try any roms. I really like the default rom as is. I came from the HD2 where I flashed so many different roms, I ended up staying with a version of the mytouch 4g. Then I went and bought a real mytouch 4g and love it. I also rooted to get rid of the crappy apps. No problem with keeping it as is. People will always try and talk you into flashing a custom, but to be honest this is the first time I never have had any bugs or issues that I had to live with until the "next update".
same here...no matter how many different ROMS I flash, I always end up going back to the stock MySense. I did have a great experience with Orange Sense tho, pure sense and blazing fast thanks to Faux
Totally with you guys, after flashing several roms, trying to get them to work properly, then ending up too frustrated to continue, went right back to stock rom. rooted and removed bloatware. now happy as can be.
Same deal here. I came from the HD2 running android as well with the MT4G build, then I just bought the real deal. Mainly for the wifi calling and the front camera for the video calling. I gave the HD2 to my daughter and for some reason just last week the touch screen stopped working,, for windows and android. So there sending me a replacement, it should be here sometime this week. Does any of you know if I can use HP3 to flash roms and android builds? cuz I did use HD2 and Now I can't find it but I did find HD3. I waS Just wondering if they did the same thing. but I'm glad to hear i'm not the only one who digs the stock sense. I thought I was the only one.. LOL.. although now that CM7 is officially out I may give it a look... but I'm sure as always i'll end up back with stock.. and hopefully we'll get the honeycomb upgrade or the 2.3 sooner or later..
I'm also happy with the Stock Sense Rom, so happy in fact that I haven't rooted yet lol. My last phone was a mytouch 3g, which I rooted a few months into owning it, because with that phone there were so many glitches and so much lag that you had to root it to get it to work decently. And I wound up flashing a bunch of sense roms lol. But with this phone, it pretty much works and does everything I need it to out of the box.
With that said, do you guys really think it's still worth it to root for the non-rom-flashing benefits? i.e. setcpu and removal of bloatware? For my needs, I don't really feel like I need to overclock the phone, but I like the idea of underclocking to save battery...also, while the bloatware apps are annoying, it's not like they have taken away any functionality of the phone...I know everyone here's MO is "ROOT ASAP" but it seems like it's a little more complicated than it was for the MT3G, and while I'm not an idiot, I'm not really a tech-whiz either lol. Just not sure if it's worth the trouble and risk if I don't want/need to flash different roms.
I ran stock for a month and used ADW Launcher EX (normal version does this also) in order to hide the bloatware from the app drawer. This phone has so much power that for me it was out of sight out of mind with bloatware. I would assume LPP and other home replacement apps would have similar functions.
I flashed around a bit after rooting but always came back to stock, but then I switched to Orange Glacier by Faux123. It's stock, just quicker and debloated with some system apps moved in case you want to remove them also. IMO it's a bit better, but I still haven't decided how life changing it is His kernels def are.

I waited around 10 days before I rooted my phone just to get a nice feel of how things ran. yes I would definitely root if I were you. if you dont want to uninstall the bloatware, you can just freeze them with titanium. setcpu with a custom kernel underclocking with screen off will improve battery life as well(only OC to play games or view videos)

[Q] Newbie with lots of experience wants ROM

I had a G2. When I rooted, I had step by step instructions to use ADB from my Windows 7 64 machine. I used the Clockworkmod recovery and got the latest (february this year) stable Cyanogen. Eventually I got the nightly addiction.
Now I have a MT4GS and rooted it first thing so I could restore my Titanium backups. The recovery is revolutionary and it seems that everyone else is using something else.
CM7 was so fully complete that I forgot how bad the rest of the world was. I had the latest Swype beta and using the current one with the phone is OK but is missing some of my favorite features.
So, to my question: Is there anything that is close to full featured as CM7? One thing I truly love about my current installation is the camera app.
When I have looked into using other ROM's, I keep seeing other recovery roms listed than the one I have.
Bottom line is what is out there? What are the differences between the recoveries? What about the camera app? I could care less if sense is gone. I don't use it and I have a bunch of apps that do what I want.
Sorry for rambling but I like to explore and tweak, I have some experience with computers , I understand most of it but I am not a programmer.
Can I get some step by step help? I would aprpeciate it very much.
Thanks.
How about CM7 there is an alpha release for our phone

And again, untill ICS, the only way to have the current camera is with a sense rom.
It will never be included in a CM7 rom, or work on a CM7 rom.
There are third party camera apps that come close, but nothing as good as the included camera.

And, for this reason, I have gone straight back to the factory rom.
I have paid for and got for free (amazon app of the day) half a dozen camera apps. None, in my opinion, come close to the original.
As of a couple of weeks ago, there was no clockworkmod recovery. After reading a reply to my original message, I found that there is. I used rom manager (paid version) to download and install the CM7 alpha and the google apps. It brought back fond memories of my G2. I was happy. Then I tried the camera. Then I tried the several camera apps I got for the G2 and nothing can take a great picture quickly and then go to the next.
So, my original question was answered. I now know where to find the CW recovery and I know where to find some roms on rom manager.
What is available for this phone that has the great customization of CM7 AND the camera app?
Thanks again for all the responses.

I suggest if you want a cm7 feel with sense try undeadk9's senseless, best thing to do is try them out nandroid em, that way you have all of our roms. We have about 5 and if you do that you can switch roms at ease.

Captivate kk4 based rom opinions.

Just curious about what everyone's opinions are about the roms out there based on kk4. I'm on cyanogenmod 7.2 Kang build right now, but after upgrading my wife's phone to official gingerbread I'm thinking about going back to a stock based rom. Seems really fast and smooth. Mainly I'm looking for a rom with the Tmobile theme engine and screenshot capabilities as I'd miss those if I left cyanogenmod. I'm still debating whether or not to go back to a stock based rom.

Well really just curious what everyone's using. Honestly there doesn't seem to be as many supported stock-based roms as their was on the earlier GB betas. I always used Cognition, but the most current version hasn't had an update since like July. I'm happy with Cyanogen for the most part, though it seems a bit buggier than stock. Really I just want a stock based rom with the theme engine and screenshot feature.

There are apps in the market that allow this. Shoot me is what i use...it also has a video feature, that will take a screen shot every so many seconds (depending on what you set it to) and then make it an mp4.
Oh and for theme support on a tw ROM, go to the market and get darky ota that should work. It injects the proper images and compiled xmls INTO the existing ROM, I've used it on mosaic, should work on all tw roms, I'd make a backup zip of the framework-res.apk and systemui.apk first though, that you can flash if it doesn't work. Or just reflash the ROM.

Yeah, but no theme engine. You have to flash them. Only the collectives have themes, and the others may have ICS themes.
I've thought about maybe just going to stock, removing the bloatware, installing corn kernal, installing a screenshot program, and then using UOT to get my themeing the way I want and calling it a day. That could work I suppose.

I'm using the KK4-based version of SauROM (note that there's an I9000-based version too, which I haven't tried). It's mostly pretty nice, except that after a full day or maybe day and a half of use, the browser tends to go loopy. It freezes up and becomes non-responsive, and appears to be hogging the CPU, as hitting the home button doesn't repsond either. If I just put the phone down and walk away for half an hour, it's usually fine again when I get back, but I tend to just reboot instead which also fixes it. I find this annoying, but it's just infrequent enough to be tolerable. I've been meaning to try a different ROM to see if it's universal or not.

Well I was on stock rogers 2.3.3. and I found it very laggy. no matter what launcher I used: go, adw, lp, even sbp shell. after a while lag would start up that would require a reboot or the phone would just shut off. Games would start out fine then start lagging. I then flashed cm7 and noticed an immediate improvement with minor overclocking but I would still get that lag, but not as bad as stock.
I then flashed teamhacks 4.0.3 ics rc14. I can never go back to GB. It is so intuitive, very smooth. The transitions are amazing. Even with no overclocking it is miles faster than stock or CM7. I was considering buying a new phone but now I will not be.
Since you are on cm7 now why don't you flash ics . its very simple to do since you already have cm7 installed. then you can decide

I thought about it, but I'm kind of waiting for stable CM9 to be complete first. I hear it has an issue with rebooting during calls. Trust me though I'm very eager to try out ICS. I ended up going with Illuminance, so far so good. I'm currently restoring all my apps ATM. I'll report back after I"m done.
This is off topic but why is Titanium backup soo sooo slow? Why do I have to sit there and say "install" and "done" on everything? I wish I could have all the time back in my life I spent restoring stoff with titanium backup

I too was reluctant to go from CM7 to CM9, but I eventually flashed it just to check it out, with no intention of staying. Long story short, I've been using CM9 for the past two weeks and it's definitely stable enough to be a daily driver, IMHO. I believe the phone call reboot was solved (I've never had it anyway), the only issue I have had was charge death, but that was solved by switching to the Glitch kernel. If you are waiting for it to be stable, your time may have come
As far as TB is concerned, the paid version lets you batch restore your apps. Well worth the $5 or however much it was.
So far so good on ilkuminance but I miss my screen shot feature, and all the apps in the market suck. Why would I want a camera icon hogging up my screen? Anyway, I may try ICS sooner than later

I ran all of the stock GB roms, was not super impressed with them, switched to the SauROM KK4 and Love it. Very smooth, seems less buggy then stock kk4. Have had a few issues of it being unresoponsive for a minute or so everyonce in a while, but it seems to be rare.
Try SauromKK4 or FastyKK4
Advantage of SauROM is that it is one click Heimdall, and really hard to mess up.
I then tried Fasty - also pretty good.
I got the impression that SauROM is smoother.
But that Corn 7.0.5 kernel is buggy - beware!
I tried a few of the KK4 roms, but eventually went back to CM7 and Kangs because the speed and responsiveness.
Now I have a Captivate Glide and am waiting for dev to ramp up for it. The Glide is what I really wanted when I got the original a year and a half ago, so I am happy.

Flashing Addiction? Please Help.. :S

Hey guys
Curious Really. I LOVE my Sensation and these ROMS, but im really addicted to flashing ROMS. Constantly having to wipe, format, reflash, backup is really stressful. I lose my texts and apps and so on. then updates come along, and there goes everythign again.
Yes, i do backup. But when restoring, usually unsuccessful.
What can i do? My dad works overseas, i gave him to phone to keep aside for 3 months and im using a Sony Ericsson C510a, that i had before. I became a perfectionist i guess. I dont want to see that phone for a while.
But close to getting it back, bought the white Sensation XE case, new screenprotector - plastic, not the ZAGG type. why did i ever go to these rubbery ones that scratch and glare and so on, WHY..
New white silicone case too, white earphones, completely changing the outlook when ill have it back.
Is it ridiculous? Ill be first to say absolutely. Freedom to do as you want, all it is.
I've been using Viper, but too many customizing options!!! I lose myself
Then update after update after update... and each is better than the other. Wipe. W..W..Wipe again and again.
Honestly, what can i do? Im desperate, i get headaches
I like sense, but is there a sense 4 ROM with lost of features and not that many customizing opptions?
I wanna try CM10 when i get the phone back, but maybe ill miss the sense 4 clock and weather.
Help? Id really appreciate it. Really.
Use titanium backup, usually restoring is a snap!! Customizations are a good thing! A very good thing! I also use viper Rom, updates are not a problem. I restore everything in a snap using titanium backup! There really is no problem here. You WANT a Rom that has a active development , you wouldn't want something that does not move forward with its development. That's the adventure, moving forward, changing things, advancing. It's all part of development. It's all good. I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you, just enjoy ! Do give T.B a try and I think it will make your restoration easier! Hope this helps and best wishes!
sent from HTC sensation, soff, 3.33 firmware, viper Rom, sense 4.1, kernel version PYD-X stable 3.1, mugen battery 3800mah. Please press thanks if I helped in anyway.
I recommend GO backup. Backup and restore sms, mms, contacts, call log, wifi access points, ringtones, apps + data all in one app at one touch of a button. Very easy to use.
i'm using mybackup, it works very well, and never miss an application or a contact/message :good:
also worked when i updated from ics to jb
Or get a phone with a locked bootloader, or windows phone. It will be a tough detox, but the addiction will pass and you'll wonder what to do with all your free time.

Thanks for the tips guys! Sorry for the late reply, busy with exams!
Absolutely customization is a good thing, it means you own the thing (Not like iPhone.. ahem..). I always tell people to get androids and not those things, and say "You wanna know what an iPhone is? Here (i click on my appdrawer, swiping through it), "This is an iphone"
But its the restlesness about it. The TB, is it the full version? Because the free was 1 by one. I should buy it then, why not?
And i love the idea og GO Backup too (plus its free ) However the ratings seem low as of some recent update, anything happened? Can you link me to it just to make sure i got the right one? Some with the same names.
Mybackup was the one that freezed on me lol. It used to be fine, then it doesnt restore completely. Or once the screen shuts off, it stops... orrrrr, it still doesnt restore completely haha.
Oh i had a winmo... Made me depressed haha, thats a LACK of custoomization and even the basic theming. But android is cool
I never wipe when updating my rom, and it still works (Bruce's CM10).
