Not without changing chips on the main board.

Hi, I bought the defy about a month ago. I bought it in south america. I live in Italy, so, when I came back, and tried to connect with my phone to the 3g network it didn't, just the GSM (the little G on the top). I'm currently using CM 7.1, but with the Defy+ ROM it did the same. Now here's a strange thing: i searched over the internet and find out that with the Defy baseband I could change the band for the Italy one, but, I'm vodafone, and the network with Italia RT on the baseband says Emergency calls only. So I used the International RT, and it worked. I thought it may be the device, so I inserted a TIM chip, but now instead of GSM I get EDGE. WTF?
I know vodafone uses 900/1800/2100...any ideas? It is possible that because I bought it elsewhere I can not connect to 3g in europe?? (even if the defy's manual says it works on Quad band GSM with GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz in all regions)
Dual band UMTS with HSPA+/HSUPA (850/1700/2100 MHz in the USA, 900/2100 MHz in Europe, and 850/2100 MHz in Australia, New Zealand and Thailand)??
Thanks for the help!!
Please, help me get my 3G back!
No one can help me? Even a hint would be great.
Thanks

for 2G networks, Edge and GPRS are the data connections available.so G is for GPRS not GSM. E is for Edge (both E and G are GSM 2G). some networks have GPRS and Edge depending on the location, some only operate GRPS, it depends on the priority network planning etc..
when you tried different SIM cards you used different networks and thats why you have G or E, depends on whats available for that network in that location.
as for 3G, what country did you buy your Defy?
italy has : 900/1800 for GSM and 2100 for 3G/UMTS
south america:
-brazil has 2100 and other bands for 3G/UMTS depending on region/operator
-other countries in south america have no 2100 but only 850/900/1900
good article here on wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands
sadly the 3G radios in most phones are carrying one and not all frequencies so your device is as small and cheap as possible.

Does that mean that even if I use baseband if my phone doesn't have the 2100 will not work in 3g? I bought it in colombia. Thanks for the answer btw. There's any mod, way to give my phone the 2100 frequency? Maybe changing a hardware part? O just I should change the phone? If I change Rom does it do anything? Sorry for all the questions

In the box says made in brazil. Don't know if that's of any help. Any way I can change the 3g radio??
changing roms or baseband is of no use unless you have correct radio. did you use the phone in colombia? did 3G work? if 3G worked in colombia it will not work in Italy, if thats the case i think easiest is to change your phone if you want 3G, not sure if anyone tried to mod radio.

Yes it worked there. Well, thank you for the help, I think I'll keep this for a while, but at the end I'll have to change it. I'll try to ask if maybe some other company use the 850 or 900 here also for 3G. I think, if the topic is solved. Thank you nolimizz.

Hi i have an HTC Inspire 4g and i use the Digicel network in barbados which has recently upgraded from edge to 4g but for some reason 4g is not comming up n my phone i am still on EDGE i compared the settings in my phone to my sisters motorol atrix and my old my touch 3g slide and i realize the only difference they have with mine is that in apn settings there is a APN protocol setting which my phone does not have mine stops at APN type ... is this the reason why im not getting 4g and if it is how can i fix this ???
Somebody correct me if I am wrong. I know you will. Digicell 3G/4G band is 900 and possibly 1800 too. Niether of which is compatible with the inspire. If you don't get 3G with the inspire you aren't going to get any 4G either. Nothing you can do to fix this.

I am going to Australia next week to for a couple of months.. and I think Rogers is going to update Razr HD phone in last week of January. Is it possible to get the update there in Australia? I am still resisting the temptation of rooting the phone and installing Telstra's ROM on it.
You can only OTA update while connected to the Rogers network. I would flash an Aussie ROM anyway before you go, so you can use their LTE if desired.

So what if i put the Rogers sim in while in Australia.. I will be on roaming, Will it get updated?.. Secondly.. i think i will be using telstra there but problem is that their LTE frequency is 1800 MHz and it is not supported by Razr HD we have here in Canada.

I don't think this is true - updates come from Google right? So even if you are only connected via WiFi (with the cellular data off), it should receive the update...

It doesn't matter what sim you have installed. Once you check in to the Motorola servers and there is an update sitting for your phone (as determined by your blur system version) the OTA will download.

You can update every carrier rom on any network ... without network via wifi without simcard...
Again this is false you can t get telstra lte on rogers phone... you can t get dual carrier hspa (dc hspa) on a rogers phone
Rogers have only 700/1700 mhz lte band with a 21 mbits ... chip
A friend from europe francer have buy this rogers phone ... flashed the sfr rom ... have a lte simcard and lte plan on sfr in lte area and not work ....
Is not just a base band question... some peoplr say same thing for motorola defy... 3 different phone... 900/2100 850/1700/2100 850/1900 if you take a baseband 850/1900 on a 900/2100 chip the phone don t work ...

Hmm... Interesting. However, I have a TMobile Defy, default 850/1700/2100 and switched it to Argentina 850/1900 and it works on Rogers that way.
Razr HD International lists the following for LTE bands:
700 MHz Class 17, 800 MHz, 1700/2100 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2600 MHz
So you're saying that the phones for different regions are hardware limited to certain LTE bandwidths? That is different from what I've been reading. I'm not saying you're wrong, just no-one else seems to make that connection.

I was wondering if anyone has been able to force their One S to the 1900 band for WCDMA and actually gotten 3/4g? I tried it on a sense ROM but I could only get Edge. Anyone have any success with this?
______________________________________________________
SOLVED: I was using an older .16 t-mobile radio. Switching to the latest TMOUS radio did properly switch WCDMA to 1900.
To change the WCDMA Band you can do it by
dialing *#*#4636#*#*
Select Phone info
pushing the menu button
Select Radio Band
Choose USA band (USA Band is 1900) in all android version.
Turn radio off then off.
To revert back to normal behavior you can reboot the phone and or choose automatic.

I have a TMOUS HTC OneS and I get reasonably fast 3/4G speeds. I don't think I'm actually on the 1900mhz frequency though. I'm pretty sure TMOUS uses 1700.

Yeah they are changing their 3g band to 1900 so iPhones can get data and to clear up 1700/2100 for LTE. I have a friend who's lives next to a broken 1700/2100 tower. Down speed at her house is 10-20KB with 5 bars of 4g. Despite multiple calls to T-mobiles level 3 tech support they swear everything is OK.
I've been able to get around it by forcing phones (nexus 4 & SGS3) to 1900. Unfortunately I haven't found a ROM that functions like I would expect it to for the One S. Forcing 1900 on the One S kicks the phone into 2g mode instead of changing WCDMA to 1900.
Just wanted to give some info I found using QPST(qualcomm software) to see what cell bands are configured for our HTC One M8. I even looked at the Rezound bands as well. As most of you know, verizon didn't carrier lock our phones, so if we switch to global or even GSM network, we can use other carriers GSM SIM cards. Just need to properly configure the APN's of course. Below are the bands that the phone will search for when Global Network is selected. I pulled this configuration from my actual device. The Rezound only was missing Bit 19 & 49 selection, but everything else was selected:
[Bit_00] Band Class 0, A-System
[Bit_01] Band Class 0, B-System
[Bit_02] Band Class 1, all blocks
[Bit_07] GSM DCS 1800 band
[Bit_08] GSM Extended GSM (E-GSM) band
[Bit_09] GSM Primary GSM (P-GSM) band
[Bit_19] GSM 850 band
[Bit_21] GSM PCS 1900 band
[Bit_22] WCDMA Band I - EUROPE JAPAN & CHINA IMT 2100 band
[Bit_23] WCDMA Band II - US PCS 1900 band
[Bit_26] WCDMA Band V - US 850 band
[Bit_49] WCDMA Band VIII - EUROPE & JAPAN 900 band
I'm guessing the reason some of us are having issues on Tmobile is that the AWS bands are missing? Can we enable them somehow?

It could possibly be activated using QPST, but there are other steps to do it. The only issue is that since QPST is the QualComm radio programing, there is potential to lose signal quality or lose all radio functionality. That said, it could also be possible to recover by flashing the original firmware or RUU to recover. I now T-mobile uses 1900 GSM PCS band and AWS 1700 mHZ. There is another program I use to actually enable more bands. The program basically converts the selection of bands to a hexidecimal number to use in QPST software to program the added bands. Again, not sure if the Qualcom chip can use it. There is a WCDMA band selection for Bit (25) IV- US 1700 than could be programed to enable. I used a thread from the Sony Xperia forum to help me use the two programs.

Nop, if someone can tell me which Rom has the change bands function then can try that as well. But even after opening the bands I'm only able to get H 14.4mbps.

There's a solution for this problem, if you are s-off-ed. I also did the same thing - i selected USA bands and my phone radio died. Just make a nandroid, flash ARHD , go to the same 4636 menu and it will give you another option in band selection - Auto!! Choose auto, then reboot and make sure you have connection with the network. Then restore from nandroid and you're good to go! I will try to find the link to the original thread!
EDIT: There it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2773907
If it helps you - thank the people in the original thread, i didn't find this solution, i'm just sharing the info!

Thanks that was helpful! Somehow I also had recently loaded a Xposed app to show CPU speed on the top bar. I uninstalled that then after two reboots things came back. So odd, but I'm not complaining at this point.
after a google search it seems people have gotten into problems with chaning bands on verizon devices, the above solutions brings the radio back to life. But it certainly doesn't unlock LTE on europe bands.
So i guess its a lost cause, as it must be a hardware limitation
