Sprint Nexus S - All things Root! - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Questions about my upcoming Nexus S!
1. Once rooted, will the ROMs in the dev section work on the cdma Sprint Nexus? I know the current ROMs are for the Tmobile device.
2. Is there a way to free up internal memory above the 16gb? I am coming from a HTC hero, and using Firerat's Custom MTD Partitions (resize Data,System and Cache) I was able to triple the amount of internal storage. Something similar for the Nexus?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754805
3. Pros/Cons of all the ROMs out there please. With the Hero, I am using CM7 and love it. But Nexus has sooo many to pick from. Need something stable that does not sacrifice speed!
4. Wifi tethering app - will it tether 4G from the Nexus?
5. MODs - any other Mods out there that are just killer?
6. Best way to move all my apps over from my existing hero to the Nexus?
THANK YOU!!!!

re: number 2. I believe 16 GB is the total iNAND flash memory. 1 GB is partitioned for internal storage. Some is used for /system, /recovery, /cache, etc. The rest is available. Out of the box you will have over 14 GB available. But 16 GB is the physical size of the flash memory, there is no "hack" that will increase that.

Thanks. Anyone else on the other questions? I'm excited abt this phone coming out next weekend!

6.) You could use titanium backup to backup all the apps of your choice then slap the titanium folder onto a computer, then slap it onto your Nexus S when you get it and restore all those apps from the titanium backup app.

The way that the HTC Fireat mod is that it takes all the extra room partioned for extra storage that is unused and free it back up. So of the 16 on there, there's 14gb available. The Fireat method of modding it would try to release some more of that inaccessible 2gb. I'll keep reading up on it.

I think you can use wifi ap to tether and be able to use 4g but I don't think there's a rom that supports 4g yet incase you flash a rom. Meaning you're only gonna be stuck with 3g while tethering.

Wait you lost me. None of the current ROMs support 4G? So if I flash CM7 I won't be able to use the 4G service? Or you're saying that I can you 4G to browse but only 3G to wifi/usb tether?

[Q] How 2 wipe without loosing Apps [Nexus S I9023]

Hey, since a few weeks i have the Nexus S and looking for a solution thats makes flashing roms easier. i´m coming from the Acer Liquid and allways had an ext partition and the Darktremors Script for a2sd. For the Nexus S that seems imposible because theres no SD. I love trieing new Roms, but i allways have to do a full wipe and after flashing i have to download and install all apps again.
Is there a way where i can wipe and still keep my apps? TitaniumBackup is ok for backup but restoring sucks, i still have to press ok/yes for every app, i just want that the apps are there.
What do you mean u have have to press yes OK to restore a single app? Have you used the batch restore?
Sent from my A500 using XDA Premium App
Of course ive used the batch. But when i have 24 Apps to restore, i have to press 24 times on install and on finish. Thats what i mean with yes/ok.
I just want to wipe-flash-reboot and still have my apps there. Like i had on the liquid with an ext partition.

Buy the Pro version of Titanium for pressing the button just once
Ok, the pro version can do so. But no credit card no buying in market.
I think a2sd is one of the most important function when you flash a lot of Roms. That there is no way to get it on the nexus is disappointing.
How do other do that, when there flash a lot?

Get my backup root on the market. It's free for root users and there are only a couple of clicks.
But nothing beats the Titanium backup pro version

eh not really disappointing, if your flashing different roms that need full wiping you might need to take a step back and just live with your phone

Slow Transfer Speed (USB)

Hi,
using MIUI rom right now, and I noticed that copying data from PC to phone is slow as hell (200KiB/s). It was OK while using the stock HTC rom. However when I go to the recovery and mount sdcard, transfer speed is relatively good (4MiB/s-10MiB/s). Does anybody know if it is a ROM related problem, because nobody from MIUI has posted similar issue.
Thanks for any tip or advice.
What is the sd card cache size on miui? Stock htc rom it was limited to a poxy 128k! I use this app to bump it to 2048k.....

See if that helps.

Hey man, is that ok to use? I mean does not destroy the sd?

Most custom roms have had this tweak as standard for a while, and I've not heard of any issues with cooked SD cards. My class 6 SD card can be written to at 6MB/sec, so I shouldn't expect a cache of 2MB to push it too far. I've had the same 16GB card for 2 years on custom roms with this fix. No problems here.
I'd say make sure you don't have the cache any larger than your SD card class. For example, if you have a generic class 2 card, I'd perhaps only raise the cache to 1024k. That's still 8 times better than stock!
Use an app called "SD Tools" on the marketplace to run a 'before' and 'after' speed test.

No, it doesn't help. It's still the same.
I'm afraid that I can't remember where I've read this, but I believe that I've previously read somewhere in the forum that this is kernel related.
So possibly try stock kernel and try again.

What is the point of installing custom roms when safestrap limits the max memory I ca

I was extremely excited to try running a couple different roms to get my footing on one I prefer. However when I finally decided on a daily driver I quickly realized that there was no point to it as the 3 GB partition size quickly got filled up on apps alone. Am I missing something with this? What's the point of using safestrap to install new roms when my internal space is so limited? I'm back to stock right now and am much less adventurous with messing with my phones settings.

Can u not make a ROM default and delete stock image? And I'm running a ROM on slot 1 storage shows I have 6gb left and I've installed about 20 apps already.
Safestrap size limits
Bump.
I'm running stock JB and researching whether I can return to ICS, obtain root, upgrade back to JB or a different ROM
Or if I can run SS as is to use other ROMs.
Thanks
How did you get 6+ gb on rom slot 1? I'm still using stock atm. And I might stick with it only because there are no other JB roms with working hotspot.

i'm in the same boat as the OP. i got a "storage space low" message this morning and noticed only had about 100MB left in a 2g partition. how do you have 6gb left? i might just return to the stock image as well.
From what ive read since my original post, this is a droid razr hd issue that doesnt allow apps and data to be saved externally. Which blows because all roms are essentially nerfed with this memory cap.

Storage space with custom rom

Sorry this is probably a stupid question, but it's bugging me. I never really paid attention to it because I've always had an ext sd. I have an lg g2 with 32 gb of storage. I know the os takes up around 8 gb, but when I flash a new rom it still shows available storage as 24 gb. Can I ever get that 8 gb back, or is it forever locked up in the stock os?

The 8gb is reserved for system. No way to unlock it.
Smack that thanks button if I helped!

Better Performance And Efficiency
Custom ROMs are oftentimes faster, more efficient, and use less memory because
the developer ripped out useless garbage, such as carrier installed apps or
the developer optimized the kernel. For example, an undervolted kernel can provide a much better battery life than the stock one.

but if you doesn't want to root etc. so disabling apps you are not using and clearing cache every week should work

Epsilon Project is a custom ROM partly based on stock firmware. It is the smallest stock (essentially) ROM you can install. 278mb zip verses 456mb for the original Motorola firmware. I made some debloat scripts for stock that will increase the free space of your current ROM. There are also some debloated stock ROMs here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/development/rom-stock-motorola-rom-collection-t2854688
Custom ROMs probably offer the most efficient use of Moto G's internal storage; for example Dirty Unicorns v8.0 is a 192mb zip. However at this stage in development you may find stock ROMs more stable / have better battery-life. You also may not be able to use some Motorola apps if that is something you care about.
I should also add because of the partitioning used on Moto G; you will only ever have 5.5gb for Photos / Music etc. It should be possible to resize the 'userdata' partition - but no-one has done so as far as I am aware.
You should not use ART if you want maximize the 8GB, ART takes much more space than Dalvik
Custom roms
Custom roms is the most efficient way to save space!
But after flashing rom, Use micro gapps which has only essential stuff you need!
If you need any other gapp, You can always download from PLAY store
Buy otg pen drive. (Even 2tb external works.I have tested adata's 2tb external hard disk).

Yes research "otg micro usb" devices
for all your storage needs
Some popular OTG memory expansion options that work with the Moto G (Android 4.4.4):
http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-32GB-Traveler-DTDUO3/dp/B00LIXJ0OU (there is also a slightly cheaper USB 2.0 version, and a more expensive 64 Gbyte version)
http://www.dx.com/p/kingmax-kotgr-0...sd-card-reader-otg-to-usb-reader-black-329494
http://www.meenova.com/st/p/mrg2.html
I have the first two, and they work well for me.
