[Q] market notifications on two devices - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a xoom wifi stock and a 3g slide with CM 7.0.2 both under the same google account, but I only seem to get notified for app updates on the xoom. I have the 'notify me' in the market settings checked on both devices. I am trying to get it to where I get update notifications on both devices. The only way to know I have updates on my phone is if I open the market and check my apps. Am i over looking something? Is it a CM issue? Any ideas?

Google Latitude doesn't update

Guessing this is because of the GPS issues with 2.1, but Google Latitude simply DOES NOT update, unless I open Maps manually.
Does 2.2 Fix this? any other phones having this problem in 2.1?

The Moment had a similar issue. You would think Samsung would have it figured out by now.
May just be me, but I thought it had to be "running" to update the location - at least on my hero I had to open it, and let it load my location before it would update latitude.
Mine updates just fine as long as you have google location services running. Menu/settings/Location & Security/use wireless networks. Make sure user wireless networks is checked. It comes unchecked by default.
FYI: This is not an Android development issue.

[Q] Market locked for most apps, even the free ones

Hi,
I just received my Asus Transformer, but it is the first time this happens to me. I never had this issue with any of my previous android devices, not even the Xoom.
I have the US version of the Transformer, but I'm using it in latinamerica. This is exactly how I bought the Xoom too.
As soon as I started the tablet, I configured it with my google account as usual, and it started to download the apps I had installed in my Xoom. Suddenly it stops half the way, and I thought it was because I had many many apps. But inmediatly it downloaded an update (8.2.3.13 for tablet and another one for docking keyboard).
Now, when I tried to resume (or reinstall) my old apps (example Flash or Skype), the market won't let me download it. It shows is until the details page, it shows the button "Install", but when I click it, it says "Item not found", and it won't download anything.
I even tried with the web version of the market, and the Transformer appears gray for most apps.
Since this never happened before, not with Xoom neither with Galaxy S, I wonder if it is some problem with the Transformer?
Any ideas?? I haven't root, of course, still checking on this problem....
Tks.
Clear the cache for the market, and the market updater, and try again.
This is exactly what is happening to me, I'm from Puerto Rico.
I had the Xoom 3G and currently have the HTC EVO. These 2 devices never had problems with the market, why?
1. The Xoom 3G contains mobile network chipset and is "carrier bound", in this case, Verizon. I've noticed that when a Honeycomb tablet is carrier bound, the owner will be able to see all apps permitted to the carrier country. In this case, since it's Verizon (US based), the market is fully open.
2. The HTC EVO (Sprint) is the same thing as the Xoom 3G.
Now, the interesting part: if a Honeycomb tablet is WiFi only, since there is no mobile network chipset, the market will use the current IP address to recognize the location (country) and filter apps for that country.
I sold the Xoom 3G for a Transformer (obviously, WiFi only) and since I'm in Puerto Rico, the market is too filtered, not even Adobe or most of Google apps are available.
The following 2 workarounds works for me:
1. I activated the hotspot on my HTC EVO, then did a factory reset on the TF. During the initial setup, I selected the WiFi connection provided by the Hotspot, since this WiFi contains a US based IP address (Sprint), the setup will recognize the location as US. After finishing the setup, the market will be fully open, not only that, the web version of the market (https://market.android.com/) will also recognize the TF as located on US and will keep it saved that way. After changing the WiFi back to the local network, I can still browse and install all apps to the TF from the web market, since it was setup with an US IP, but the market app will still filter the apps.
2. In the "My Apps" section of the market app, only those apps filtered to the country will be shown, so if there is an update for a specific filtered app, you won't see the pending update. In this case, I just reconnect the TF to the EVO hotspot WiFi and then restart it, when going to the market app, all apps will be there (My Apps) and I can see if there is any pending update for all installed apps. This method can also be used to install apps from the market app, it's just that the download speed will be probably slower than local network.
Hi guys,
I created an issue on Google's issue tracker for this very same problem problem.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=16845
Please star it, and hopefully they'll take notice.
I'll try that, tks a lot!

It worked for me. Did a 'Factory Restore'. Connected to my T-Mobile hotspot. Managed to purchase an app.
Market Enabler is an app that might work for you guys. I use it to buy apps in Vietnam.
*Edit* - Sorry, requires root.
As an alternative could you could use a US based VPN proxy? Such a proxy is often used to get around IP country based filtering. Google for US VPN proxies as there are both free and paid services.
Here is a paid service that has very high speed:
VyprVPN Personal VPN
There are XDA/TF posts on connecting to a VPN in this forum. I do not know if they would work with one of these services.
Just search the 4shared app for "apk" and you'll find a market that works.

Tks a lot to all for your answers. I think it has something to do with firmware. First time I strated the tablet, it allowed me to install google books, then I did a reset factory and now it didn't. Maybe this can be solved rooting?
EDIT: Rooted and still nothing. It is random, first time I tried to install Tweetcomb (since its free now) it went great, now market won't let me....

[Q] Can I use a stock blaze to tether?

I have a Blaze on T-mobile's value plan with 2gb data. I am currently running stock 2.3.6 gingerbread and have an icon blinking that there is an OTA update to ICS waiting for me to install. I've postponed that for the moment until I find the answer to my tethering question.
I would rarely use it, but on trips I would like to be able to use my blaze as a hotspot for a tablet/laptop. Im a noob, and afraid to go down the rooting path. With staying stock 2.3.6, would I be able to just use the built in hotspot app to give access to a tablet/laptop? If not, would foxfi or another program work?
Also, if I were to go ahead and install the ICS update would that affect things? If I can use the built in hotspot app or foxfi only in 2.3.6 and ICS update would not allow these options then I'd prefer to stay where I am on 2.3.6. If I need to stay on gingerbread, how can I get this annoying icon telling me to update to go away?
Thanks so much for your help guys
i recently went ics with the over the air update and i was able to get my wifi tethering working with the built in hotspot w/o rooting. i still rooted in the end though.
ics has the ability to disable apps, so you can disable WifiProvision.apk (i stopped getting t-mobile messages related to hotspot)
i'm not sure if it matters, but i also use the app Widgetsoid. It feels like many apps in one. I use the widget to enable my wifi (which is wifi hotspot)

I havent upgraded yet, but I have a question about disabling things. I have a galaxy tab 2 with 4.04 ics and I wanted to turn off the software update feature to remain on that version in case a JB update came out. I could not figure out how to disable the app, so I wondered about how to disable things in general. What are the steps?
To disable apps on ICS: Settings > Applications > All > [Select app / .apk]. Then you just hit disable, or uninstall to uninstall updates, then the disable button appears.
This would be howto disable OTA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856632
I would still recommend going to the latest update on stock. I think it's better and generally is able to support everything in the previous.

Google Play Services - High Data Usage?

Hi, recently I have observed almost 3GB of Google Play Services usage.
I am reading in many threads that this issue is caused by OTA updates constantly downloading. The only solution reported is to download some application to disable it. However, apparently this causes a wake lock? Also, this is reported in version 4.3. I am on Cataclysm ROM on 4.4, so not sure if the solution would be applicable in this case.
Any help is appreciated.
Thx!
If you're running a custom ROM, it wouldn't be OTA downloading. If you have high accuracy on for your location settings, something might be trying to access GPS and syncing data.

I had enormous data usage with google play store and android services while i was stock, i tried to find the culprit but i couldn't so im at a custom rom until we get an update. I don't have a problem on my custom rom right now (liquidsmooth) they still don't pull back tho, always at the top of my data usage list, google needs to look into that.
So for Google Play Services I have made it only to download in the background, so connected to WIFI.
I believe that this has disabled Push notifications, as Facebook Messenger no longer alerts me to a message.
Any other input would be greatly appreciated.
Thx!

App store and wifi issues

Having an interesting time right now...my S6 won't connect to my relatives' wifi network.
On top of that, it's not updating or downloading/installing any apps. I'm just starting to customize it and now it's not going anywhere.
Any tips? Also, after I restart the phone, all of the same apps are open - is that typical?
