are you rooted? if so, which rom are you running?
also, have you used a file manager to browse and see if the files are still on your phone? normally scdard/media/dcim houses picture/video files made with the phone.

Not rooted, just plain old stock for the time being. Haven't searched for them like that yet. I just noticed they had disappeared from my gallery.
i would check to see if the files are still on the phone.

Not normal, yes as suggested browse through your gallery thoroughly or use a file manager app like Linda File Manager.
Through the camera app there is a way to view photos youve already taken.
If You can preview them they have to be somewhere within your Inspire
Very strange. They definitely were not in my gallery. I hooked up my phone to my laptop and there they were in the DCIM folder. Now they appear back in my gallery after disconnecting the phone from my laptop. Not exactly sure what was going on there.

If it happens again bring the phone back for another one. It could also be the SD card. Try doing a full format on a computer for it and put the files back on.
since i've updated to 2.3.3, i've noticed that some pictures are missing from phone. i think i had the issue with 2.3.2 as well. noticed video missing as well. this really gets to me since the pictures just randomly get deleted from the phone. i've googled it and it's a common problem. does anyone have a fix for this yet?
My understanding is that the pictures arn't actually getting deleted, just the gallery isn't displaying them. To be sure, connect your phone to your PC and browse to the pictures, they should all be there.
I believe I saw a 'fix' somewhere about installing a different gallery manager app, and that that seemed to fix the issue. I can't remember which forum I saw it on, so please don't quote me.
This used to happen to me on my NS. It would look like the photos where deleted but then when I would check later on they would be their ,and that was on 2.3.2
As we say in French: "Dans le doute, reboote". (When in doubt, reboot). Your pictures will be back in the gallery. That's the only workaround I found for the moment...
I've had this but the pictures *are* deleted. I do not trust the Gallery app anymore, and only use QuickPic (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.alensw.PicFolder&feature=search_result).

I use Quickpic as well cuz the gallery app sucks. I just lost pics and a video that i converted and moved onto my phone. They are gone. Can't find them using my computer to browse my phone, can't find them using ESfile explorer either. Rebooted. Still gone

At least I didn't lose data on my iPhone.
I have had this happen to me too, but i had the app AndExplorer on it and i read something where it said that this app was known to delete files just randomly, so if you have this app.. id suggest using Linda Manager or another file manager instead..
Here is what you can try when you see pictures not showing up in gallery3D app:
Stop or FC Gallery.apk so it's not running
Use root expolorer (or some other expolrer capable of displaying files and folders starting with ".")
Browse to /sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails
Delete all pictures and files you see there (those are thumbnails only)
You might have to reboot the phone but usually you can just start Gallery and it will regenerate (slowly) all your thumbnails again.
Gallery3D app creates the folder called ".thumbnails" for which it stores all thumbnails of your pictures for quick screen draw on the 3D interface. If for some reason you copy your pictures from one place on SD card to another or you add new pictures without Gallery.apk running they wont show up because thumbnails were either deleted or never created.
So I have downloaded comics to read, some are in cbr format and some are in folders that are just jpegs. Now my problem is that I can view these jpegs files normally, but whenever I either shutdown or put my tablet on hibernate, the pictures will be gone after I power the tablet up again. The folders are still there but no pictures. ??? I don't understand why this is doing this, I've also had other pictures deleted too. The files are mainly stored on my 16gb microsd that I have installed. This has happened to me about 3 times now. Is it the app I am using or some setting in the tablet that for some reason deletes photos after viewing?
I also read somewhere on another forum that this is a known issue with Vegan and to solve this problem I am supposed to create a file and call it ".nomedia" and am supposed to put this file where my picutres are on my microsd card. I have also tried this to no avail. Now maybe I am doing this wrong, I only created a text file and then called it ".nomedia" I also copied this file into every folder and sub folder where my pics are getting deleted.
Oh yeah my g-tablet is rooted with Vegan.
Please help me because this problem is very annoying.

I was about to post a question about this, but I just figured this out myself. My phone recently updated to Android 11. I have an SD-Card which has music on it - along with a lot of album art. Since the update, all these album art photos have been cluttering up my gallery. Every time I add a .nomedia file in here (which also was there before the update), it seems to get automatically deleted (no, not hidden). I tried copying a .nomedia file from elsewhere on the phone. I even tried popping out the SD-Card and adding the file via PC. As soon as Android touches it, it deletes the file again.
So, here is the issue. With Android 11, it is creating some default folders (I wish it wouldn't clutter up things with these empty folders that I never need or use). Those default folders include: Music, Pictures, Movies. These are created at the top level on the SD-Card and on internal storage. So, if you are also using one of those folders for something, it's going to auto delete the .nomedia file. In my case, I just moved my music into a Musics folder instead(and ensured it has a .nomedia file, of course.
Hopefully this will save someone else from wasting their time trying to figure out why this is happening!

If you're storing your music files in any of the default folders, Android is going to auto delete your .nomedia file if you try to put one there. Ergo, the solution is you need to store your music in a folder named something else.

Thanks that's what I did and got lucky, I was so desperate I signed up to XDA just to comment I gotta say XDA I love your site and been reading for a couple year's now, enjoy the information provided, thanks guy's for all your hard work

hello, i just get Android 11 on my MI A3, and those folders ( music, pictures, movies )appears on my sd card, they are useless for me, is there a way to delete them?
before Android 11, i didn't have this problem because i choosed " use sd as external support " instead of "use sd as extended memory" when inserting the sd card, but now even if i make the same choice, the folders are there and i can't delete them.

How do I stop it from creating these default folders? It's extremely annoying. I don't have my SD card structured that way and never have. I've deleted the default music, movies, etc folders numerous times now as they just clutter up the root directory and they keep reappearing. Is there a solution to this?
This seems to be a part of Android 11s default folder structure which no one ever bothered to do something about. I wouldn't be surprised if it's there for "security reasons" as well as a communist one. As in you only have the option to use these "secure" folders or else it won't show up in your apps at all.
This might be a way for Google to slowly faze out SDCards entirely while only giving you the option to use said folders for your "private" stuff akin to how IOS (kinda) works. In other words, they are doing it on purpose and no one ever bothered to read the fine print.
Obviously private music and other media collections is the root (see what I did there) cause of the problem. They don't want you to have those at all, And want you to use streaming services instead (tinfoil hat). Which is probably what these folders will probably end up being used for.
Netflix and Spotify allow you to store music on your device, but it's encrypted and will probably end up there at some point in Androids lifecycle. Obviously these files don't need .nomedia since the files are encrypted and will only show up in said app either way which makes the above meaningless.
Most of this is speculation obviously, but we've slowly been moving towards this trend if you look at how System apps were split into app and priv-app and so on. At some point in time only certain apps that has had the blessing of Google will be allowed to read anything off your storage. This happened with Chrome not to long ago where they blocked side-loaded extensions from running.
You will slowly see Android turning into IOS because they (Google) and big-tech in general wants 100% control of what you can and can't do. And everything based on AOSP or LOS is gonna follow suit because no one gives a flying fudge because that's too bothersome. The fragmentation of custom builds based on LOS/AOSP in general already shows that this has always been the case for the last 10 years. Linux in general is no different either as can be seen with wokeism. Except that was through decimation via woke people and not big-tech.
I was going crazy thinking this issue was specific to my samsung's stock rom. I started searching about this once I noticed it on LOS 18. Glad I'm not alone
I tend to be a little OCD about my folder structures but at this point I don't mind making a separate folder to avoid album arts in my gallery.
I believe I found a solution to this. It's been about a week or two with no further incident now. My solution was to delete the default folders from the root of the SD card because I don't use them, then create blank files that used those names. Haven't had a problem since.
I use the top level pictures folder because of a compatibility issue with programs that have small file path character limits that cause the program to hang. I don't use them anymore but I haven't had a reason to move it back where I had it previously and that would only make the default folder issue worse if I did. Or at least it would have until now with this discovery.
I do not use the movies and music folders, and if I move my pictures folder back where I had it I won't use that one either. Having them pop up on their own to clutter my root directory on both my SD card and my phone itself was very annoying. After deleting the movies and music folders off of the root of my SD card for the billionth time and getting rid of the empty default folders on my phone again, I created two blank files on my SD card root called Music and Movies. Ever since then the default folders haven't reappeared. On top of that, it hasn't created any ".thumbnails" folders all over the place like it always used to do either. That includes doing so on the internal phone storage. Creating those files on the SD card seems to have broken the whole process. I imagine the same would work vice versa for OP since it sounds like they use those default folders. Find an empty default folder on internal storage, delete it, create a file and name it the name of the folder you deleted (case sensitive), and that should disable the annoying default folder management process too. I can't vouch for that method, but I can vouch for it working when you do so on the SD card.

From what I can tell, the .nomedia file nolonger does anything on its own. However, if I add the .nomedia file to a folder, then rename the folder placing a . in front, of course it hides the entire folder. When I rename the folder again, removing the ., the .nomedia file now works. No matter how many times I rename the folder, the gallery does not see it until I remove the .nomedia file.

Recently upgraded to S22 Ultra from S22 and have nothing but issues.
Discovered that there were multiple "camera roll" "screenshoot" "dcim" etc.. folders at first I thought it was just folders from older phones but it wasn't. There were photos from 1 day spread throughout all the "camera roll" folders so I combined them. That somehow filled up my storage and has caused duplicates and caused issues with the apps that create their own folders.
So I can undo what I've done and hopefully fix the problem now and for future upgrades, could you please tell me where all the various photo folders should be saved? When I combined the duplicate folders I then moved them all under Samsung Gallery.

Hi, the folders with similar names have been created by the device I'm not referring to any albums within Samsung Gallery I've created. The issue is with what this device is doing, I first located them in Samsung Files on the device and also in OneDrive via the website not the OneDrive app.
There are multiple dcim folders, multiple folders labelled camera, camera roll etc.. at first I thought they were folders from previous devices, but when you take say 20 photos in a day they are spread throughout these various camera roll folders not just in one.
Hi, I only see one DCIM folder in my S22 Ultra. Are you saying that you have multiple folders with the same name? How many of them? Are you using multiple photo applications, like the GCam ported application and the stock one, and others? Are you in stock android? Rooted?

That is not normal behavior. The way the S22 Ultra handles images taken by both the default Camera and Expert RAW apps is the same as the S22+ and S22. It creates only one DCIM folder with Camera, Expert RAW, and Screenshot subfolders. Apps like Facebook, Video Editor, AR Emoji camera will also build their own subfolders within DCIM. Google Messages, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, Office Lense, put their respective folders in the Pictures folder which is at the same level as DCIM.
Try resetting the camera app settings.
Camera - > Settings->Reset settings (3rd from the bottom).
If that doesn't work backup all of your important files (documents, photos, videos, etc.) to your computer and factory reset it. Don't restore from a backup. Once you have confirmed that it is working properly, you copy your files back. When reinstalling apps pay attention to the behavior after each installation. There is still the possibility of a third party app may be the cause.
Yes, I know that it's tedious, but it will either fix it, or help you identify what is causing the problem.

Hi, yes so more than one Dcim, more than one camera roll etc.. at first I thought they were from my previous devices but when I take photos, one days worth of photos is spread across the say camera roll folders which just makes it more confusing to workout how to fix.
Nothing out of the ordinary, everything's stock standard that automatically is on the device. I've had nothing but trouble since upgrading so many other issues but would like to sort this one if I can.

Hi, I've had to factory reset over 30 times as I have so many issues, not just this photo folder issue. When I first got the device and setting it up as per usual encountered errors.
Did a factory reset via the settings and when the phone was turned back on it wasn't completely reset, tried again and a few more things were reset but again not all.
Had to do a black screen reset (sorry dont know what thats called) and that helped a lot more but it was still not a completly reset device.
I've tried not signing into anything and setting up as a new user, didn't solve anything, I've signed in as you go and that hasn't worked either. I've installed all apps manually, not from backup, and still have issues (I only have like 20 apps most are just standard or the bank). I've had an authorised technician remove and reinstall the software, and that didn't solve anything. They were stumped as they can replicate all of my issues but weren't able to fix them.
I've been battling with this since I got it and have had to make do but it's basically an expensive piece of plastic/glass at this point.
I haven't tried specifically what you've suggested about the camera, so I will give that a go.

If a factory reset is not working, it sounds like the recovery partition is corrupted. Have you attempted a factory reset using the power on, volume up method?
1. Completely power the phone off.
2. Simultaneously press and hold the power and volume up buttons until you see the Samsung logo. This will put you into Recovery mode.
3. Using the volume down button, scroll down to select Wipe data/factory reset and press the power button.
4. Select yes to confirm your choice.
It will may ask you for your Google account password. If it does, enter it. It should then run you through the reset process. The difference with using this method instead of doing from settings, is that it should download a fresh image.

It currently looks like this Onedrive: Files: Pictures: Samsung Gallery: all folders created by the device, by apps, by me.
I had moved all folders into Samsung Gallery as I didn't understand why some folders where in "Pictures" and some were in "Samsung Gallery" as that's were the duplicate DCIM, Camera roll etc.. were.
Do you happen to know the correct file path for:
- folders created by the device
- folders created by apps that use Photos
- folders created by me
Then I will manually go into OneDrive on my Laptop and move them around, hopefully that will solve the problem.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with your phone.
Have you enabled Sync between OneDrive and Samsung Gallery?
If so, turn it OFF.
There is only one DCIM folder in a phone, and the Camera folder is inside of it. On Samsung phones, even the Screenshot folder is inside DCIM by default, but you have the choice of changing its location.
Hi, there is actually a lot wrong with the phone not just this. Which has all been proven by an authorised Samsung technician who has been able to replicate bit not fix any of the issues, unfortunately it's been like this since day one and I'm not getting very far with Samsung so I am trying to fix what I can so it's more usable than an expensive piece of plastic/glass.
But thank you for being so polite and helpful, it makes joining a forum and asking for help so much less daunting.

Some apps do put folders in the Pictures folder.
Just to be clear. When you open My Files and go to the Internal storage, how many DCIM folders are there? There should only be one. If there is, then your phone is working as designed. You cannot have two folders with the same name on the same level. No OS that I know of does allows that.
If you are seeing more than one DCIM folder in OneDrive, then something happened with the syncing. Are you syncing any other devices (tablets or phones) with OneDrive?
