Is Odin really necessary for flashing ROMs on the Sidekick, or can I keep on using adb/fastboot? Or is there a native tool for Linux for flashing ROMs for Samsung?
Other forum threads I've seen recommend running ODIN on Virtualbox, which is doable but a pain in the keister.

odin is only used when you soft brick and flash an image to get back to stock to recover a device you flash a rom through a recovery menu

Thanks, but that doesn't seem to really address my question. Fr'instance, I can use fastboot on my G1 to load a new ROM easily:
Code:
fastboot update -w [Rom_Filename.zip]
Is there a reason I couldn't do this with a stock ROM on a Sidekick in case of a softbrick instead of using ODIN? I know I've done this on my G1 when it freezes on the bootlogo, which seems to be a similar state.

Heimdall
Ok, so Heimdall successfully flashes my mistakes away. One more person verifying that it works.
Does anyone know how to get it to successfully make a dump so it's a bit quicker to get back to something more than stock? Seems like all of all roms are sent out for CWM, which works great till I soft-brick everything.
My only best guess on getting a good dump is adb, remount,ro, and dd it all back to the computer. Seems like a bad place to be with halting everything mid-stride.
And with all the leaked roms lately, does any seem to support fastboot? theres been a few options out now and i'm a bit leery on mucking with the boot-loader
Fastboot is only for HTC, not samsung.
Is it possible to use ADB with linux?
Yes, install the Android SDK, that includes adb.

If I'm not mistaken, you need kexec to flash this.

If you have kexec setup, all you have to do is extract the boot.img from the zip. Then flash what's left first and when that finishes flashing, kexec flash the kernel.

Do not flash this as it tries to flash a boot.img which is detected by the locked bootloader...then your soft bricked and a odin session is in order. Its suppose to be getting kexec implemented so it will work on our device...stay tuned.
Yes, a bit of a stupid question. How can I check if I have CWM installed? I'm trying to flash the debloater using Jul's wonderful flashign tutorial. I know my phone is rooted, but I am not sure I have CWM installed, because in the tutorial is says this:
To flash a kernel or modem follow these steps:
Boot into CWM and select the "Wipe cache partition" option, navigate through the "no" options until you hit the "Yes" and select it.
Then go to the Advanced menu and select "Wipe Dalvik Cache", once again, navigate through the "No" options, select yes, and let it do it's thing.

I have none of the shown options. My screen has blue text, and only four options. I don't want to risk harming my phone by flashing a different ROM. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT:
It appears I don't have CWM. Would flashing to another kernel such as Basic with a Twist delete my data?
EDIT 2:
Sorry for the confusion, I accidentally said I was going to flash a ROM. This isn't the case, but thanks to everyone for your help so far .

Reboot to recovery and see what the screen says. If you are running CWM, it should say "ClockworkMod" or "CWM" and a version number near the top, or something pretty close to that.

You don't have CWM. That's the Samsung stock recovery. Download the Basic with a Twist kernel and flash it using the instructions from the wiki to get CWM.
Note that flashing a kernel on its own will not wipe your data, but once you flash a custom ROM you most likely will need to.
If all you want is to flash the debloater, then flash one of the heimdall one click kernels. Dont flash mine tho use just Antonx's kernel.

Flashing a ROM is most commonly done through CWM recovery, so you would need to flash a kernel loaded with CWM. However, flashing a new ROM deletes all user data; and you must be EXTREMELY careful, especially if you don't know much to begin with. I would either follow a guide to the T and/or read up a lot more on the ins and outs of flashing before you change anything with your phone.
Before you go any further with flashing a ROM, I'd strongly recommend downloading at least the "free" version of Titanium Backup from the market, if not the paid version. Once you have root access, you'll find it a good backup tool when you get to flashing ROMs.
As mentioned above, if you are just flashing a kernel you generally won't lose data, but backups are wonderful things.
I'd also read up on CWM/TWRP/nandroid backups before flashing more than just a kernel.
You might want to consider moving to one of the "ICS" ROMs once you are comfortable with flashing ROMs in general. The data upgrade is a little more involved (generally you can't just "restore" system-app data from one major release to another), but the usability and stability of the ICS ROM I use is, in my opinion, much better than the best of the GB ROMs that were produced.

Are you on Froyo or Gingerbread? It sounds like you might still be on Froyo; both the debloater and the custom kernel you're trying to install are designed for Gingerbread.
So yeah, Heimdall One-Click time. Make sure you flash bootloaders, you'll need them if you're coming from Froyo. This'll definitely delete your apps and contacts, but if you had your contacts synced with T-Mobile or Google, then they'll come back. Hopefully the backup you made was with Titanium Backup so you can get your apps back
Best of luck to you!
Please if you are going to give instructions atleast try to give proper ones.
You need to flash bootloaders with one of the heimdall one clicks. You will flash once, when it is done and starts to boot pull the battery and cable. Put the phone back in download mode and check the flash bootloaders box in heimdall one click.

Hello, I am confused. I have heard some people have issues after installing nvflash and then installing a custom recovery. I notice that they are both flashed to the address "0x0b05". Will this cause a problem? For instance, recovery overwrites NVflash or vice versa.
Thanks. Any guidance appreciated

You do not "install" nvflash. nvflash is a tool that runs on a PC. For using it with the TF700, you first need to flash a hacked bootloader and run a tool to extract a blob file from your tablet. Then you save this blob on your PC and keep it safe. This blob is used with the "wheelie" tool, which prepares the communication with the tablet, so that you finally can use nvflash.
And 0x0b05 is not an address, it is the vendor part of the Transformer's USB ID.
You should read the nvflash-related threads thoroughly, this should clean up some of your confusion. Do not try the procedure before you know what you are doing!
thankyou for clarifying that for me. In this case I have one other question, what are the chances that flashing the bootloader would fail and brick the device?

It worked fine for me, but for a well-founded answer, we would need some statistical data.
I'd say the chances are greater than 0, but not much, if you know what you are doing. At least I do not know any reports of bricking by flashing the bootloader - all recent bricks I read about in this forum were a result of using some inappropriate way to flash a custom recovery and then trying to wipe data.

Yes, it will overwrite the custom bootloader. But at that time you should already have pulled your blob and stored it safely on your PC and backed it up multiple times, so you don't need the custom bootloader anymore - it is only required for extracting the blob, not for running nvflash.
Ok, thanks. I just needed to be sure of what would happen. I will install the custom bootloader and recovery, generate blobs and preform nvflash backup. I am still unsure if I want to use the stock ROM with a custom recovery or if I want to use cm10 with a custom recovery.
I am definitly going to use cm10 or cm10.1, custom bootloader with twrp recovery after here that Asus spies on what you do with your tablet.

Improper use of nvflash can cause all kinds of malfunction, however proper use of nvflash should always be able to repair that (if you have backups).

theoretically yes. However, the mount points are different in the ROM. if you try and flash directly, you'll get stuck in a softbrick status. At least thats what happens on the 9505G when flashing a stock 9505 ROM.
Most likely gonna have to wait til someone can cook up a ROM based on this dump.

Wonder what the chances are of flashing this (incluidng the modem) over to the tmobile m919 since its physically the same device as the i9505g.
So this may seem like a stupid question... but how would I be able to flash all of this back to my I9505G?
I did flash the other dumped files from before after I soft bricked mine but I still don't think it's back to 100% stock. I still think the recovery isn't correct (even though I tried flashing the other one). I guess my big question is, how do we go about making this a flashable Odin package?
I'm wondering if there's an issue with the PIT since the last thing I used that screwed something up was the "Quick Flasher" tool for the I9505 (to try to flash CWM recovery)... and I wonder if that screwed up my partitions.

So I'm quoting myself here, but I'm trying to figure out what went wrong originally...
Like I said, I used the Quick Flasher tool to attempt to flash CWM recovery, but it looks like that may have tried to flash it to the wrong partition. Looking at the QF utility, it tried to flash the Recovery to mmcblk0p21... but according to Donovan's other thread from the first system dump, p21 is apparently where the Boot partition is, not Recovery. So my partitions may still be screwed.
My head tells me that flashing this PIT with Odin and then flashing the System, Recovery, and Boot included here would get me back to normal. Thoughts??

ack - weren't you able to restore with my other dump? if so, this will be no different. only addition to these files is the PIT and all the modems.

I did... but my gut still tells me something's messed up (part of that is paranoia after soft bricking I think). The other part is that I still think my recovery is wrong. I'm pretty sure I booted into the stock recovery very early on to have a look and it didn't look like this (what mine is now)...
