My First MOD On The G2X - T-Mobile LG G2x

Didn't like the brownish color to much so I painted it somewhat flat black.
Looks better in real life.
My 2nd mod will be to add a second battery on top of the original one.
Will have to do some electric soldering and cut the back of the battery cover.
Won't do this till they start to sell the OEM battery cover.
I also painted it in white and looked really nice. But I'm liking the black a bit better.
If anyone would like to have his/hers cover done let me know.
Btw, sorry if this is in the wrong section.

nice. I want to do mine white amd red sonehow
nice work tho
I hate how thw top speaker is black I was thinkin about painting it chrome

Looks nice. What kind of paint did you use? Also, did you sand the battery cover and primer before painting it?

That looks really good, what paint did you use?
Although I admit adding a second battery wouldn't be to my aesthetic tastes.

"I hate how thw top speaker is black"
I don't understand? You mean the top where the hdmi is?
White did look really nice, its has to be the right kind of red for it to look good.
And thanks for the compliment.

I'm thinking after I make a perfect cut, I will fiberglass a cover for it (round it out around the battery). Than sand it SMOOTH and paint it any color I want. It will look OEM for sure. And will be NICE to hold in the hand too! Will NOT be that thick at all. Will have DOUBLE the battery life.
If they come out with a 2800MaH(or higher) it will save me time in the soldering 2 batteries. All I will need to do is the fiberglass battery cover.
"Looks nice. What kind of paint did you use? Also, did you sand the battery cover and primer before painting it?"
It's a paint that sticks to just about anything, I only sanded the edges to help stick.

Btw, I had to remove the lens cover and the brushed aluminum google "plack" or whatever it's called. Otherwise it would not look oem because of the edges would have paint on them. Taped it up the first time when i painted it white and the edges looked terrible. Removing it looks like factory.

What paint did you use specifically?

I know its been a while, but OP are you still around? I am wondering how you got the "plaque" off

I'd also be interested in what paint you used. I'd love to try out white on my wife's phone and black on mine.

Interesting that the type of paint is apparently a minor trade secret.
I would think that the type of paint made to stick to plastic models might work well. Testors brand, IIRC, is available in hobby shops. (Do not deliberately concentrate and inhale, you might end up like me!)

How easy was it to get the plaque off. Was it glued or some sort of sticky tape???
Looks like it came that way!!!

That's sexy! I might look into that after I buy a 2nd OEM cover! Maybe even pain the brown accents on the phone black too?

Looks good!

Yeah... fresh paint looks great. Lets see what it looks like in 6 no. Maybe you can post pics then to see how durable it is. Agree the brown back color sucks.
meh...

i want to do this to my g2x can someone tell me how i can do everything i dont want to mess it up and pay 30$ for a new back cover and what type of paint do you need etc

Looks very nice indeed! Might have to get one too, to interchange with my Otterbox case.
Though ive got a slight worry that glossy black will scratch like a motherducker in no time.
If anyone gets one can you post some pictures and maybe a video too? Curious to see what that plastic is like. Cheers!
I was gonna go for a casemate tough, but I think I might wait for this, looks very nice.

Got it on, and loving it! Extremely perfect fit. 100% top quality. It's all one piece, so getting it on is a bugger, but once it's on, you can't tell it's a case unless you know what the phone looks like without it. The light gray part is very soft, and very comfortable to hold. It does not add extra bulk when holding it, but just enough, so now it rest better in my palm. The glossy hard black part makes it look so sexy. Overall a great feeling case. The buttons are the easiest to push now. Even though they stick out ever so slightly they don't look out of place like the OtterBox commuter case. They have a dimple on the inside also which helps press the buttons on the phone, so you no longer need to press firmly, but just a gentle press works fine, but not so gentle that you would press it by mistake. The rubber around the screen is a great fit. It goes all the way to the glass, so you no longer have that aluminum edge there. All in all a great case. I highly recommend it.

Nope. The lens is slightly inside the case. The entire phone lies perfectly flat. Actually the shinny black back doesn't even touch the surface when it's on its back, so that won't get scratched by sliding the phone on a table or anything. The soft gray side grips are slightly raised from the case, so the middle is actually off the ground (I tried taking a pic of that, but it just looks like it's sitting flush, so I didn't add those).

So, the thing is a ***** to fit into initially.
Will it give way after a while so you can get it in and out easily, or is it some hard plastic that won't yield or wear down? Do you guys who own one see any way of modifying it for quicker removal?
I'd really like a case but I do not want to lose the ability to use my device for satnav, and I already have the Brodit cradle mounted....

The shinny black part is very hard plastic, and since the very soft gray part is fused to it, it is really really hard to get in and out. I almost feel like if I push any harder I'm going to break one or the other, but the soft part is just soft enough to get it in there. I don't see how it could get easier over time. It's one of those cases that once it's on, it's on for a long long time. Compared to the OtterBox Commuter case that one seems like it can fall off, and the Pop case seems like it was actually made into the phone, and not to come off without a struggle, but if I had to make a choice I would pick the Pop case 100% of the time. Again if you compare them side by side the OtterBox looks like it was made for a kid to play with, and the Case-Mate one that you buy tickets to see it in a museum. It is that good!
Thanks a lot for the quick reply mate. I was thinking that maybe one could cut or file down one of the plastic ridges that snap into place around the screen to hold the device.
I done that ages ago on a case for a XDA mini, and it worked quite nicely but obviously there is a thin line between making the in and out easier and making the case unusable by cutting in too far...
Again thanks for your input...

Sensation back piece

I'm trying to take my back cover apart and I can't get the last piece off unless I break it off. Does anyone know how to take it off?
Update: you can take the top piece off with brute force without it breaking. It has some glue holding it but not a lot.
Update#2: the extra backcover was only for solidus
I don't think many people have tried this lol. Just wondering, what are you doing it for?

I'm putting 2 coats of matte and 1 coat of gloss. If the paint works the way I want it to, ill put a clear coat. I don't think the paint will interfere with the signal as long as you leave the holes open on the cover.

yeah, i was gonna sand down the shell and use a matte paint, 2 or 3 coats, then maybe 2 coats of clear, depending on how it looks when its dry...
as for the letters, when i need to cover something that small/detailed, i use this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_bandage
works like a charm, and peels right off! just be sure that when ur done ALL your painting, use a *fine* tip blade to run around the edges of the letters so it doesnt peel your hard work off
it will adhere to metal, wood, plexiglass, fiberglass and carbon fiber, but make sure the surface is SUPER CLEAN! i cant stress that enough

I picked one up. If it fits anything like the black replacement from Amazon it's worth the extra few $$$ for a perfect fit.
Try finding a white digitizer for under $166 now. I paid $66 for mine in Dec, tried to get another one couple weeks ago, nada. I did find one for $60, paid for it, got a refund 2 weeks later.
Looks like they just took an OEM battery cover and painted it white, no?
If that's the case, I'm fairly sure you could do the same for less than $22...
Bought one of the white batt covers, gotta wait till end of April for it to get here from china.

anyways that looks exactly like the stock cover for the white version, i guess that explains the high price. I hope its not a black one painted white that would be very disappointing lol

Review of White Cover:
Pros
1. Fits perfectly just as stock
2. Gets a lot more attention on tables
3. It's glossy which matches the glossy screen
4. Tighter fit than stock
Cons
1. The cover seems a bit more "thicker" than stock but not significant yet noticeable
2. Some imperfections of the cover (e.g. 3 tiny little black ticks, imperfection on one corner)
3. Black screen, black top cover, silver bezel, and white back cover doesn't go as well as I thought.
4. Silver Google thingy on the back is not flush where it connects with the flash/camera thingy
Overall: 8/10 Feels like a new phone but i'm not a fan of the thicker cover. I want to say it was repainted but it's definitely not. Looks like a non LG re manufactured item but they used the wrong thickness on the material.

Can we change black screen as easy as snapping the back cover?
White is different but it looks pretty odd with a black front but a white back.

You're going to have to do a bit of handy-work if you're interested in that. Only do this if you're 100% confident in your abilities; it's a simple process, but not that difficult to break a tiny part, thus leaving your phone useless.

Covering the Magenta?

I think the Sidekick 4G is great, but I do wish the entire casing was black. Was there any workaround for that? Perhaps a black decal that could cover the magenta back of the screen?
I thought of a Sharpie, but then thought that the coloring would be uneven. I don't want to paint it because that could flake.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks,
Jake
I thought the same thing. The black one is all black except for the silver behind the screen, but the Pearl Magenta version you and I have...well, maybe you could send it to the folks at Colorware? Just a thought.
Interesting idea; I had never heard of them. Looks expensive, though. Hard to believe that some clever person hasn't come up with some sort of decal to sell on ebay

No Sharpie

Good call, Don't use sharpie, it didn't work, trust me. There are dozens of little nooks and crannies that are hard to get and the Neon Pink stands out in everywhere.
Should have go back and fix it with Automotive touch-up paint, little bottle with a tiny brush with automotive quality paint. If I ever get around to it, I'll hope it works out better.
That would be the best choice, an automative-quality paint. But that might scratch or even flake, no? Hate to see any chips fall into the phone's guts.
Jake
Get a plastic paint should stick really good (used it for my xbox controller which is used roughly an a lot)
Should come as a spray paint kinda
Their are a lot of differnet ways to paint it or you can have a custom back made? May cost some money but you can make it look pretty awesome
Clear/ clear color

A good plastic paint woild work the best. My next choice would be model/hobby paint. They often bond well to plastics.

Change Side Bumpers

Since it appears that LG makes it pretty easy to teardown this phone it would be cool to change out the bumpers for smaller ones. lol... (I don't plan on dropping mine).
https://youtu.be/7N_mGT-P1ZA
Only thing I was on the fence about this phone was that T-Mobile only has black. (I know, I'm a stickler.)
Max's video really showed you how easy it is to teardown and replace with other colored parts later when available.
Actually I might keep the black and just go for the rose gold rails and camera ring from the white color.
As for slimmer rails I think if you use a dremel you could shave off a few mm possibly? Similar to what a few LG G Watch R users did to get rid of the cheap black paint.
Black and gold would have the most "premium" look. Now hopefully people will start breaking their new phones, so more replacement parts become available lol. Or, maybe the people that got review units will sell parts? Here's hoping.
I was actually thinking yesterday after seeing Max video to just change bars to gold.... And leave black... But not rose gold pure yellow gold... Sexy sexy... I saved an eBay search to find them

I'm not sure that's 100% a good idea. For one, we already know the fingerprint sensor only works when you're contacting the side bumpers. Who knows what else might stop working if you disconnect or replace them? The antennas, maybe?
I wouldn't want to be the first to find out.
I am thinking of buying an extra set and plasti-dipping them:

I didn't know the bumpers had anything to to with the fingerprint sensor...

Yeah, or I'll use CF Vinyl. (I do vinyl as a side hobby so I have lots of extra bits)
I have rose gold rails, and I'm already seeing silver poking through on the corners just from pocket wear (no case).
Very minor so far, but if it gets worse I'll be looking for stainless steel rails.

wasn't the black leather version available in your country.

That is very disappointing. Do you think you can take a picture of the wear?

Best I can do. As I said, it's very minor. It looks like a glint in the corner, but it is wear. No drops, identical on opposite corner. Like the earliest stage of holster wear on the slide of a carry pistol.
That's not too bad at all, but it would definitely be nerve wracking to have... Thanks for the update!

I am thinking of buying an extra set and plasti-dipping them:

I didn't know the bumpers had anything to to with the fingerprint sensor...

I love this idea, bought GT-50 gun tape and it works great for a few days and starts to peal off.
Plasti Dip may be the answer.

Plasti dip is amazing.. Never thought to use it for the rails of the phone, that would be very cool. Best thing is, if you grow tired of the dip want to change color etc you can just make a small cut through the dip (most people use something like a standard screwdriver or a razor) and peels right off.
I might look into this, I'd love a dark blue on my bumpers to go with the black phone... Oooh...
I don't believe I will want to take down the phone to do it though. May look into doing so without it.

Black and gold would have the most "premium" look. Now hopefully people will start breaking their new phones, so more replacement parts become available lol. Or, maybe the people that got review units will sell parts? Here's hoping.

I bought the white intending to buy black back cover and simply aplying skinomi decals in black carbon fiber to the white parts in front. Actually the decals are on the way already. I have applied Di-Noc carbon wrap to the back of the clear Ringke cover because it was a finger print magnet. But the cover weighs down the phone too much for my liking on what is already a heavy phone compared to my feather light Note 3.
As for the Rose gold rails, I have clear wrap for cars left over. I cover them with that before the plating wears off or I scratch it. Man those things weigh down this phone. I have a cramp by the end of the day.
I would be cool if I could take them off, and still have a case. the side bards only make the phone wider. It seems it would be easier to hold without the metal bars, that are nothing more than cosmetic additions.
Yes they are big... But just a few screws holding them on. I could see the phone modding scene take off with custom bumpers. Flat ones would be a great first entry. Also a stylus bumper could be added to either side, with a thin styla style that clips on or slides in.
