THIS IS NOT FOR ANY OTHER ROMS BESIDES CM7 (AND CM7-BASED ROMS) AND MIUI, SO DON'T ASK!
I'm using the UUV CFS version. It is very fast and smooth, I urge you not to have an OC past 1.3GHz as a daily driver, unless you want horrible battery life.
Any option below PUV is safe (UUV, -50mV, and -25mV all work, but every device varies).

i didnt think my phone could ever sh*t itself until i flashed this kernal.

lol, iffy kernal. especially with two versions available, its kinda strange testing them and seeing whats best for your phone. flashed the cfs version, and as expected, things seemed evenly smother throughout the phone, yet even at 1.99, there was nothing special or over the top about performance. also, i had a very strange, completely indescribable hiccup after booting.

Been running his kernels for a couple of weeks, no issues. It is nice to be able to choose from different undervolt versions. Helps battery life a little, around 5%-10% in my experience.

NikolaiT, just FYI this kernel works with Ultimate Droid, which is based on CM7. In case you want to update the OP.

+1. Running 4.2 cfs -25 version on UD now. 4.0 was the best battery life ever on any cm7 based roms. Haven't tried the puv version yet, but rest assured I will try and report results..

Careful, the PUV version softbricked my device. Easily fixable through reflashing your ROM or just a new kernel.
It may not brick yours because some devices can handle it, some can't.

+1. Not "iffy" at all.

I've been using it for a while now. At the moment I'm using the latest CFS -25 UV version @ 1305 with the scaling set to Intelligent Donkey (lol) and I actually made it an entire day without charging. That's saying a lot for someone that gets about 12 hours max on a charge.

I'm currently pulling two days at 64% with the same kernel but my CPU settings are 122 min - 1075 max.

So what's everyone recommendations for the best version of this Kernel in terms of both optimum battery and performance?
Additionally... what kinds of CPU governors and max-min frequencies are you using? I've seen a few post what their using in this thread, but I'd like to get some more opinions.

I've been using this Kernel for a few weeks now with no issues. The UUV had some slight hesitation when scrolling so now I'm running 4.3 CFS with the -50 UV and it's absolutely perfect. Fantastic battery life running at 122/1305 MHz with the -50 UV.

i'm using 4.2 and I didn't flash any scripts... is the default -25UV? I'm gonna try 4.3 and -50 script later tonight.
quick question to the group: what is eating up your battery? mine, oddly enough is cell standby and phone idle. i'm using stock radio. in the past (on froyo builds), it's always been screen time.

Default is no undervoltage.
Cell Standby and Phone Idle are my two biggest "battery killers" but that's normal operation.

maybe all of you missed the whole miui thing. it says it works great with miui, but my phone seemed very buggy after switching from cattleprods kernel, but you tested it on very different roms than me. it addition, my quadrant score were crap on both types, cfs and bfs, which is completely contrary to the description of one over the other. so yes iffy.

Can anyone explain the difference between the scheduler flavors? I use cfs, but bfq or io?

Check these two posts: Post 1, Post 2. Looks like BFQ is the standard scheduler and VIO is quicker on paper (kind of like BFS vs CFS).

Thanks for the explanation. The bfqhs seems much smoother than the io. I am running it with the uuv.

Undervolt Kernel without lack of HSPUPA? Or battary reduction options?

Hello I have run both the stock cm7 and cattleprods 4.3.1 with smartass
Even going as far as to use SetCPU profiles to reduce CPU to 245 min/Max on screen lock. Im able to squeeze 11-12 hours with decent usage
from what I unslderstand reading the lord UV kernal people are lacking hsupa which is something I rather like. And while im ok with 12hours usage if something unexpected it long dinner party after work, im SOL
Any help or tips would be great

HSUPA seems to be hit or miss on the LorDmod kernel which is strange because it's based off the CM7 kernel by Kali-. I changed my APN and my HSUPA speeds came back, at least what's normal for me in my area (3.5mbps down/2mbps up).
I was pulling a little over 48 hours out of the -25mV undervolt BFQhs version before it needed a charge or it wouldn't last the next day. I'm currently running the Pinky Ultra Undervolt version and will see what kind of battery life I can pull out of it.
Wrong forum for this. It should be in general but the lordmod kernel probably isn't the hsupa killer it was probably the radio swap I did. I fixed it but it was a PITA!

What do you do with lowervoltages-25.zip?

Wipe Cache and load the 2 .zip files just like a ROM. Hopefully you won't lose HSUPA like I did (I still think it was the radio swap but I refuse to try this again as it was a pain to fix).
Sounds good. Ill report back with my findings regarding the HSUPA and overall batt improvements.

I'll tell you the -50mV kernel mod froze the phone numerous times when opening an app to where I had to pull battery. The -25mV mod didn't help at all for my battery life. My phone drained same as always which is terrible but not great either.

I'd say go with BFQhs CFS or the V(R) I/O flavor (edit: scratch that, looks like he pulled the VIO one until tomorrow), they're supposed to be faster than the others. The non-undervolted kernel might give you fine battery life so there's a possibility you won't need to undervolt at all. Also, flashing an undervolt patch is optional.
Unlike Mustang, my phone responded extremely well to the -25mV but seemed to go back to typical drain when I switched over to -50mV. And it seems like it's enjoying the Pinky ultra undervolt so far. Like LorDmod says, try them out and see what works.
Flashing the kernel's simple,
Do a backup
Reboot in to recovery
Clear /cache
Clear Dalvik cache
Install kernel zip
Install undervolt zip (optional)
Reboot and enjoy
This is just my experience - during extensive testing for my APN modification thread I ran multiple versions of lordmod and never lost HSUPA speeds from the kernel itself. Any loss of speeds were due to other issues which were identified and corrected.

Yeah like I said I'm 99.9% sure it was the change in radio that did me in but it just so happened to be just before flashing the kernel and I didn't notice till the next day I lost HSUPA. I personally will stick with stock CM7 kernel just because I messed with my own head lol.
I just flashed the kernal last night with the -25. HSUPA is still intact. Ill report back on Bat life

I have only tried -50mV with the latest LordMod which after 2 days is giving about same battery life as stock CM7 (about 20-24hr with moderate use). I cannot explain how -25mV gave you better battery life. I don't understand how much the other 2 version undervolts.
As a whole now tried OC/UV on both the Captivate and the Inspire, I have not noticed a significant difference in battery life with either of these phones. Also it seems like all the ROMs give me about the same battery life, and the whole thing about re-calibrate your battery if you don't flash with a full battery hasn't held up for me either. I can flash a new rom with 30% battery or 100% my battery drain remains unchanged.

My experience mirrors yours. No matter where my battery is when I flash a ROM the drain remains the same. I've also done the whole wipe of battery stats and no difference either. It lasts me long enough as I charge it overnight anyways while I sleep so oh well I'm not too worried about it anymore really.
I recently removed the battery percent from the status bar. All I ended up doing was obsessing over it and had to see where it was all the time. So now I just use the gauge and feel better about the battery lol and not even focus on battery too much unless I'm away from my charger for an extended period of time.
I use lord mod 4.4 and I have hsupa. I never lost it.

That is because your device can't handle it, every device handles it differently.
As an example, my device handles UUV fine, but when attempting to use PUV it boots, but with any random reboots and application FCs.

Trust me, it makes absolutely no logical sense to me either. It seems to really like the PUV version as well so I'm not complaining.
For me, there is a noticeable difference between the stock kernel and undervolting. Stock CM7, my phone drains at around 3% per hour. Undervolted, it's slightly less than 1% per hour and possibly even better with PUV.
With the CFS BFQhs and -25 UV I got another hour and change. I feel like I used it the same maybe more. Im gonna try another one of his kernel and maybe the -50 or UUV see if NY device can hang with it.

hello, I just wanted to make this thread for everyone to share their lowest AND stable voltage values for each frequency. Here goes mine:
(anything above 1000mhz was not tested)
1000mhz <-- 950mV
800mhz <-- 825mV
500mhz <-- 550mV
300mhz <-- 500mV
The following was done with eb1.0.4 + trinity kernel.

I started by doing -50 on all from 1200 oc...ill test for a whole day and drop it down -25 tomorrow and test for a whole day. And please post scheduler also.
So far @-50 on deadline scheduler all is working well, no freezes.

I can't belive how efin good mine has been, bt on, wifi on for 2 hrs, on xda forums every 30 minutes unplugged at 4:30a at 1:00p still had 55% left, whereas stock kernel would be at 15-10%...

Also, a question to everyone, what are some of your unstable symptoms from UV? Since I've never had any rebooting issues with my g2x, I am not sure if some of the symptoms I was experiencing is from UV'ing or from the kernel. If you gone under the UV limit, does your phone just freeze or would it autoreboot?

UV will more than likely freeze or you will reboot... UV typically just makes everything really unstable, you might get stuck in a bootloop and have to reflash

oh and a precaution to those using eb1.0.4 + trinity kernel. I set my max voltage for 1000mhz (my max. frequency as well) too low, and the phone autoreboot on startup twice and then did a factory reset itself This happened twice so be aware

What ROM and Kernel are you using? Also, which EB can be used with the Trinity kernel? GB or FroYo?
Anyone find that their battery has actually gone down while UV'ing? I'm finding after a full charge, the first 30% has been quicker by almost an hour. Not a really scientific method of testing, but I do just about the same thing every morning (email, txt, etc.) left over from the night before. That first 30% has a lot of screen off time, which will lower the speed to 300Mhz using PMCpu.
I'm going to up the voltage to at least 700 for 300Mhz and see how that fairs.

really ticked, need advice..

okay soo i started off loving my tbolt. i ran bamf ginger remix for months without issues. i then changed to aosp and while i prefer it, many bugs and bad battery life are keeping me away.
so i went back to bamf and while i feel at home, i get alot of lag no matter what kernel i use. i need some advice on what to do and what rom is the fastest/lag free with the best kernel combo.
im dying here guys.
as far as setcpu settings i usually use ondemand or interactive no higher than 1228/245.

As far as I can tell, the Ziggy kernel in the latest Gingeritis3D is the smoothest. Might be something newer in the synergy ROM, but I'm getting good battery life and things are nearly lag-free.
I am running OMFGB right now, and while I do prefer AOSP roms, the battery life isn't great. I have an extended battery so the battery life for me isn't an issue.
I agree with the previous post in regards to Gingeritis 3D. I had version VII installed, deleted almost all sense out with Tibu and used ADW EX. It was nice having some sense, lockscreen, pulldown, but that was all I really liked about sense. I oc'd to 1.4 and thought it ran great with excellent battery life.

I haven't messed with uberBAMF yet. I understand it's a work in progess. I'm not sure what kernel it uses, but it might be worth giving a go. I'd love to think it's NOT a Ziggy or Imoseyon kernel just because I think Sense kernels NEED a LOT more attention.
im going to stick to bamf ginger remix until the theory 1.3x rom goes final. the newest ziggy kernel in synergy isn't very good imo, very laggy. i just extracted the gingeritis one and it's a kernel build from july, it's one of the better ziggy kernels. you know, the one from my thread that was removed. ill stick to it for the time being.
i just wish there were more stable aosp roms. no offense to cm7 or the devs, it's just not 100% yet and the battery life is ****, at least for me.

The Ziggy's in Gingeritis3D is different than the Ziggy's in the older Gingeritis. The clock settings and smartass parameters are different. I think part of the reason that Ziggy kernel is as lagy as it is sometimes is because of his smartass governor parameters. I think if they were tweaked to be a little less stingy the phone might be much snappier. As it is, that kernel seems VERY reluctant to creep past 1 GHz, like the load requirement for stepping up is fairly high. I think it's ramp down is just a little too aggressive, and the period of load polling too long as well.

I'm not sure it is. I know that one didn't go up to 2GHz. It's definitely a similar build. The up_threshold on the smartass on that one you extracted seemed even more aggressive than this one. I had issues typing with it if I set the min_freq too low. I run this one at 122MHz without a problem.
Edit: Actually, I'm sure it's not. The one you extracted didn't have the camera fix for the new base Chingy used for beta 6 and 7.

Wouldn't be surprised knowing how he works.
I would recommend trying the uber bamf preview 3. I tested out preview 1 and it was by far the smoothest feeling ROM I've used and it also gave me the greatest battery life I've ever had on my Thunderbolt. They've fixed a few bugs since preview 1 so I'm sure it's even better now. It includes a stock kernel by the way.
You may also want to try the latest nightly Synergy ROM, it's what I'm on now. Performance has been pretty good and battery is okay. I have SetCPU at 1344/245 with lagfree.

not a huge fan of synergy, i may give uber a whirl.
Go back to the stock released ROM (rooted, if you prefer to make things easier). That should be the baseline for everything.

Best kernel to keep things simple, stable

I'm really very happy with my Nexus S 4G. It's unlocked and rooted, but otherwise pure stock and I really like it that way.
Coming from the Hero it's a pleasure to have a phone that doesn't require heavy modification to make it perform properly. Still, I miss the thrill of flashing ROM's and kernels.
I would like to try a kernel...mainly to simply o/c a bit, but I don't want it to suffer stable and reliable operation. I recall with the Hero, some of the kernels would adversely affect things like the GPS, making it something I couldn't rely on.
So my question: what kernel can I use that is uncapped, but will otherwise be as close to stock as possible?

Kernels are pretty different over here. I don't even know what's closest to stock. They pretty much all have mods in them. Matr1x kernel is pretty popular. You may have to up the voltage for it if you oc to 14xx. 1200 seemed pretty stable to me with default voltages. Currently franco kernel is pretty popular. You can't oc it, but it seems pretty snappy without oc. GLaDOS is also being used a bit but i've read some mixed reviews and for me at least it did seem a little lagging at times for the short period I ran it. I tried Trinity kernel when I first moved over from the hero and it seemed kind of flaky though it's possible that could have been due to the kang I was running. There are a few others out there. Cm7 kernel has a lot of the same mods cooked in though it's likely not the latest updates. You will see a lot of mention of BLN and Voodoo. There are apps on the market for those features and there's an app nstools that has some kernel config settings you can adjust depending on kernel. Mainly just try to read a lot. Most of the roms and kernels haven't given me any major issues beyond the random reboot, which coming from the hero, just means "normal" lol.

And get the same replies everyday. I don't sound to be mean but seriously there is more info than you can get by starting another thread, only thing is you need to dig the info.
I have tried a few different roms and kernels and for once cm7 runs perfect for me w the supplied kernel. No reboots. Has been stable at 1440 performance for testing but I usually leave it at 1000 on demand.
Yeah they all have this blinking light crap in it now by default which I hate, and the lights turn off and I don't like that either. I want the light on when I'm using the phone and off when I'm not, not the other way around!

I like the bln mod, but I do not like the one that turns off the backlights when using the phone. It's just easier to use the buttons imo and gives a quicker visual reference for everything. Otherwise I mostly am left wondering what is up with all the black space.

I hear you on that, and spent a lot of time reading comments and concerns and problems about the various kernels available. They all seem to pretty much be experimental, with various idiosyncratic problems and lots of bells and whistles such as aforementioned BLN, Voodoo, deep idle, etc.
I thought maybe I was missing something in my search for a kernel that would allow o/c, but not have the stability concerns of a the feature-rich, highly customizable kernels.
I think the Matr1x kernel will be your best option, u can OC it till 1400mhz, what I don't recommend to do, but at 1200/1300mhz its pretty stable.
It also got many options like BLN, BLX, Live OC, touch wake, etc.
But if you don't want them, why you just don't use 'em?
Like just flash the kernel and keep it like it is, and maybe do some overclocking.

franciscofranco's kernel (link) works best for me. It's fast (no lags even without OC, I'm running at stock 1000 MHz), reliable (I've been using it for at least month and I haven't got any random reboots or application hangs) and battery efficient (thanks to deep idle and other tweaks).

Never found a more stable kernel than Pete's. However, I've been on Glados for the last week or so and am seeing excellent battery life with Deep Idle.

personally i think overclock is totally unnecessary , why ? 1 GHz is sufficient to handle all job you require to the phone...
Best thing to do would be compile your own stock kernel with oc.

with deep idle OFF, the difference between the two is minimal, idle stats displayed deep idle has been 0
Downloaded and testing peter alfonso's kernel now. Its very minimalistic, no options like deep idle etc, and u can OC it up to 1400mhz. Running 400-1100mhz for a day now and the battery life is just awesome.

I still have random reboots....

Will these ever go away on my nexus s? I have gotten them in everything from stock 2.3, cyanogenmod 7, stock ICS, oxygen, and every single ICS rom I have used. I understand some software bugs take a while to find but I have had this bug for over a year, will it every get a fixed? (Or is this not a software bug but an actual issue with my phone?)

Nope. I usually run 200 mhz minimum and 1200 max for my cpu. On stock I also ran stock volts.

Well, you're running an overclock... Try running without.
CM7 has a sleep of death/reboot bug, so try another ROM not based on CM7 too.
Highly recommend Oxygen 2.3.2 coupled with Franco 08.12.2011 GB kernel.
If you're interested in ICS ROM, give AOKP ROM and Matr1x kernel a try. It's rock stable for me. I just rebooted to flash the new build, but before that it lasted for couple weeks for me without rebooting. Link to AOKP ROM is in my sig.

There's your problem. Perhaps increase the voltage? Your phone may not be able to handle the frequency without extra voltage.
There should be no random reboots if you never touched anything kernel related. If so, then bear the consequences.
I've been using CM9 v2.2 for about 3 months now haven't overclocked or undervolted and haven't had any "random" reboots ever.
I'd highly recommend the Androxide ROM along with Air Kernel. I've been running this combo overclocked to 1200 without any voltage setting changes for a decent amount of time.

I second that. Usually OCing requires raising voltages across the board. I use +25mV (arm and int). If you're suing a matr1x kernel that's even more reason to raise voltages, because afaik that kernel is undervolted by default.

If you are having problems then roll everything back to stock... its not good enough to say you have run every rom , yet fail to mention you OC. What other tweaks do you run? Deep Idle?
I'd bet if you flash CM9 with no tweaking it, it will be fine.

Or just about *ANY* rom for that matter. First ensure you can run it stable without OC, UV, didle, mods, themes etc then, by all means, go ahead and tweak to your hearts's content.
Overclocking to 1200mhz CPU only does NOT require extra voltage across the board, but possibly a boost at the 1200mhz voltage. Each frequency runs at a different, changeable voltage which has nothing to do with all the others. LiveOC, however, raises the frequency of each step and as such generally requires a boost in voltage across the board or thereabouts.
As for the problem the OP is having, who knows. Could you describe any specific things you've done, though? Full wipes (detail what you wipe), titanium backup restores, etc.
First thing i would be trying now is to do a full wipe (factory/data reset, format /boot, format /system), flashing either stock 2.3.6 or 4.0.3 and installing only necesseties and try for a week or so. If there are still reboot problems, describe them and hopefully i can give you some useful things to try. If you had this problem before the 1 year mark you could have probably gotten the phone fixed/replaced under warranty, though. If it is now over a year i'm afraid that's too late though.

So, I guess, has nothing to do with ROM, voltage, solar storms, etc..
Well this is all bullcrap. . . i installed CM7.0.1 and CM7 RC1 and the latest ICS from CM team and her phone either randomly reboots or switches off totally while charging in the night.
Its got bugger all to do with the kernel because i used the standard kernel with all the CM7 & CM9 roms and the same things happen over and over.
Also the OC'ing idea is BS, i don't OC my nexus S or hers and even mine suffers random reboots.
there has to be some code somewhere thats not behaving a sit should and google never sorted it and CM team never found it, or the hardware is just ****ty in this hand set.
Have you tried other ROM besides CM7? I remember when I flashed CM7 for the first time. My phone never liked it, it was all bugs for me. I even noticed that OC'ing would generate problems on any ROM.
I just ran away from CM7 and OC'ing.
Try Oxygen ROM (or stock as they stated before) with all set up to defaults and test for a while.

I admit I had reboots with cm7' but with latest cm9 nightly I have none. Stock kernel stock oc and stock voltage with deep idle off

The update was pulled for many reasons. Try stock GB or Oxygen ROM and enjoy life without freeze, sleep of death or reboot...
