[Q] Camera Quality - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just curious, I see a lot of issues are with the camera and FPS. I was wondering if the quality was any better with a smaller resolution? I wonder if ASUS will have a OTA update for the camera app.

From what I've read, the FPS issue is only affecting the rear camera. Asus is working with google on correcting this - I can almost guarantee this is a software bug and I'm certain it will be resolved.

It's got to be, too much potential to be so underdeveloped. Is the audio playback better on the front camera too?

Yeah the fps issue is only with the rear camera for video. Once they fix the fps issue it looks like it is capable of a fairly decent video quality.
The quality of still camera shots is average, but then it is only 5mp. Obviously if you wanted a proper picture, chances are you wouldnt lug your tablet around to take one anyways. It's handy for scanning documents, etc of course.
The lack of a flash isnt really bothering me, which I thought it would.

From what I understand, it's more than just a frame rate issue -- several reviewers have noted that the shutter lag is unacceptably long, at over two seconds between pressing the shutter button and the picture actually being captured. Unless Google and Asus can solve that, it'll still prove unusable for many people. But as noted, most people (myself included) aren't buying the Transformer for the cameras...

I don't know why people care so much about the camera for? Obviously its garbage just use a DSLR or Camcorder if you want pics/vid cause the pics you get on this will be the same as your cell phone.

Solely for unexpected snapshots, to be quite honest. But you're paying for it, wouldn't you expect it at least to be usable, even if it's not great?
And incidentally, speaking personally, my main shooter *is* a very good quality DSLR with a good selection of lenses including a few primes.

That would mean carrying around a camera in my pocket too when I already have the cellphone and a tablet with cameras and (potentially) great playback. btw, my cell phone take fantastic pictures and video..so I wish in that respect! I would use the camcorder function mainly to record videos of the phone LMAO! A camera would be like a 3rd investment and get left behind a lot for me.

^ Definitely great for that reason and yes! We are paying for it.. might as well do what it says it does lol
Personally I really like snapping pics and videos on tablets. I love the big screen with the camera, and the idea of having one central media device.

In the faint distance I hear a post screaming bloody murder as the delete button backspaces each letter haha

I honestly don't care too much for the camera. It'd nice to have, but I'd rather have a less buggy OS. It seems like there's a memory leak issues with the device if it's left running for a while. I hope that gets resolved.

Is there any camera mods?

I was just wondering if there were any hacks that can be done to the camera. Like speed and quality. The camera doesnt seem like it put out '5mp' quality images.

You can change the quality via settings...
what hes asking is if you can change the shutter speed, not the image quality settings.

try to understand that its not a camera but a phone, the camera is a 5mp sensor but the quality of the sensor and the rest of the optics are not going to be on par with a 5mp point n shoot dedicated camera. software tweaks will only do so much given what they have to work with. you can get pleasing snap shots in good lighting conditions when you're without a proper camera.
some phones will focus(no pun intended) on the camera feature(of the PHONE) and you will get better images. for example my nokia n95 takes much better photos than my hero, and the new experia x10 supposedly has a really good camera(for a PHONE) although i haven't used it first hand im told it can almost replace your point n shoot cam.
so in short you should lower your expectations a notch or two.
Like the above poster said, I mean you've got plastic optics and a fixed focal point--you aren't going to be taking awesome pictures.

its coming with the 2.1 update.
I only wish the shutter speed was a little faster, but this goes for ALL phone cams. You can never get a steady picture if you have shaky hands or are trying to snap a shot of a 2 year old.
bring the came close to your body and slowly exhale when taking your photo. try stabilize yourself better. the shutter speed is pretty slow cause the sensor is not all that sensitive so more light exposure is needed.
as for getting kids to stay still, good luck.

Try ISO 400 or 800, you'll get more image noise but you should get better results with fast moving targets....3 and 6 year old, here

Wouldn't the fact that it has autofocus infer that it is not a fixed focal length? There is a mechanical autofocus lens in the camera. Still not as good as any real camera, but it is the best phone camera I have ever had.

G Tablet FF Camera upgrade?

I'm just curious, and still have not found the answer I was looking for via search.
Can the 1.3mp camera be replaced with a better a 5mp camera on the G Tablet?...
Assuming The hardware exists, and that it is compatible, is possible I am sure a new kernel is needed, what about the possibility of adding 720 recording like the hd2(android version) or the nexus one?
Any thoughts would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.
I would personally love to see the addition of a 5 or 8MP rear-facing camera. Yeah, I know it would involve some massive hardware hacking, but it would be a nice addition.
Is that pain and suffering really worth the upgrade? There would be no way to use the camera effectively because you would have to have you back to what you were shooting. My opinion would be to go buy an HD video camera for $150. Cheaper and easier than hacking your tablet up.
This is one thing that frustrates me about my G-tablet. I took some videos of the family out in the snow the other day and it was a real pain trying to capture the video since the camera only faces forward. The video turned out alright since we were outside and in good light. I've found that unless you are in really good lighting, the camera does not perform well. The quality didn't even compare to most of the devices that are out on the market now (latest Android 720p phones, iPhone/iPod Touch).
I'm looking forward to the NI Adam's swivel camera. It should be really nice for not only video chatting (front-facing) but also being able to film other things from different angles. For example, it would be nice to angle the camera almost completely to the back to film other people in front of you or angle the camera perpendicular to the device if you want to lay it on the table and do a timed photo or something similar. The camera is supposed to be higher resolution on the NI Adam, but higher MP doesn't necessarily equal higher quality so I'm crossing my fingers.
I wonder if now that we have kernel source there wouldn't be some way to add support for usb webcams? I imagine the only reason no one has done it yet is because most android devices don't have usb ports.

The FF camera is only meant for video chatting.
First off, thanks for the replies. I was looking for feedback and info and I need more, please keep them coming.
Second, I too like the idea of a rear cam pics and video, and yes I understand I wouldn't be able to take pics without my back facing, I still want it to be a web cam; The question is can I replace that cam with a better one, even if it may only be a 2.0 or 3mp? If you are going to do video chat, or maybe even streaming videos would a higher mp camera help or hurt?
Third from my understanding there may be room for a rear camera, as well as room for modules that can be added like gps. If I can get any more info and can keep the cost reasonable, I may look into both.
I like the g tab cause its a Do It Yourself-er that has tons of potential, and since I have some time on my hands, I am looking to make any one(or more) of these a potential project.
Thanks Again for the input

There's no way to install a rear facing camera. All these projects you mentioned have been looked into by others and have basically determined not worth it.

I guess there have been no major changes to the camera. Actually the stock 2.1 camera is better than on any of the custom ROMS. Camera picture quality depends on the amount of light and the correct settings. I wouldn't describe it as horrible but you sure need to tweak everything to get a good picture.
I've attached some pictures I took recently. The first is using the macro setting. I was fixing my friends les pauls toggle switch and changing the pickups. A few flower and weird pod pictures. And the last one is of my place and the lawn outside. Maybe you guys can comment on the quality.
EDIT: Im on WanHU's rom stock with these photo's.
As per my experience, the phone is great with macro mode shots but when it comes to landscape photography it doesn't provide quality snaps. They are average just like the ones taken with my old Nokia N85 ( 5MP camera)
Here are few samples taken with XT720.
I find the camera performs pretty well here... On ESB (2.1) right now.
I'm going to chime in here and say I get great pictures with this phone - though there is a slight delay - so shooting my son on the run is hard (he's gone when it snaps!). Though I don't always shoot on automatic, and I hold the button to allow it to focus. I do get a lot of red-eye, but software can fix that (though, the software makes my son's eyes black, and they are blue )
I came to ask about the recording aspect and am hi-jacking this newer thread - what about that? I'm now running RusMod 1.9 with the US/Eng patch and am still getting the noise/lines in the recording. Here is an example of a bad one;
Can't post links yet.. check Henzod on Youtube
But I don't always get it...
Can't post links yet.. check Henzod on Youtube - Poncho video
(Don't laugh, it was just a test video lol)
Is there an alternate Camera.apk to install or something else to fix to get this working again?

I get shutter lag also, but only really on the first shot when loading up the camera. Once the camera is loaded up properly, snapping pictures is actually surprisingly fast for me.

I did some research on that. It isnt the camera loading up but the xenon flash charging. If you take pictures in conditions where flash is not required it happens instantly. Apparently the xenon gas has to be at a specific charge for the flash to work

Well, whatever the case, it's nice once it's charged.
Well, I find the camera useless for taking photos of my daughter because of the lag and that's all I really cared about camera-wise, so I'm not too pleased with the camera performance. It's too slow to capture spontaneous things.

Takes me 3-5 seconds to snap a pic from another app on ESB generally...
No, what I mean is you press the shutter and the phone contemplates its navel for a few seconds and she's moved already. So you're cajoling her to smile at the camera and she finally does and you hit the trigger and watch as she moves out of frame/closes her eyes whatever before the photo gets taken.

To an extent I find that's true of most low/mid point & shoot cameras. For quick camera response nothing beats the dSLR with a fast lens but that's not always available.

This doesn't happen on the Moto Defy either (can tell you out of experience) and that is mid-end phone.

Okay, but it's got a promised 8 MP camera, which actually takes great shots if the subject is still life and a lot of the slowdown is not the xenon flash (though, as noted above, some is, understandably - though xenon was a selling point...) but the software itself. This has been demonstrated over and over with the updates we get to the ROMs - some are better at photos and video, some are worse.
Still - why do my videos look so horrible while there are demo videos on YouTube that look amazing?
I was reading a review the other day and I saw the reviewer mention that getting a better SD card can improve HD video recording (which has often lagged). I saw a comment by Motorola on a youtube video saying the same thing.
I'm sure this has come up before, but I can't remember the conclusion. Does a better SD card provide improvements?

Yep. A better SD card obviously has a higher Class (like yourself). And as we all know the higher the Class the faster it reads/writes to the card. The faster the r/w the better the quality of fps and output. I have a 32gb Class 10 card and 16gb Class 6 card and to tell you the truth, I really don't see too much of a difference as far as Pix go. Video on the other hand is a whole different ball of wax. I get way better video on the C10. Don't forget the SDcards they come with are garbage, Class 2's. Take a C2 and compare with a C4 or C6 and it is apples to oranges.
I'll try out my class 4 (but only 4gb) SD card soon. If I do notice better camcorder quality maybe I'll have to consider spending a few bucks for a better SD card... Though I don't know about a 32gb class 10. I looked at the prices for something like that in my nearby electronics chain and they charge about $150 for that lol. I might as well save that money for a new phone.

Camera / Image signal processor quality (unexpected)

Hi everyone!
Edit: The camera and camcorder response / accessing time is also 5 and 4 times higher than another Android device.
This tablet comes Full HD display, utilizing nvidia's 40nm processor technology (SoC).
The current IC fabrication technology is 22nm, 28nm and 32nm which is considerably more efficient than 40nm in terms of processing power.
I noticed on the first day of receiving this tablet I was overwhelmed by its full HD display, for this tablet being a high-end product.
When I look at the image captured by the camera I was somewhat not surprised by the image quality of the camera.
It has been one of the main features which was talked about in the launch / promotional video of the TF Infinity.
Where it talked about a 5th lens that adds on a superior quality but I don't see that quality. There are couple of problems with the camera.
1. The well known focus clicking problem in video mode (auto focus is unavailable in video mode).
2. The image captured in a room with fluorescent lighting has a refresh rate problem (with horizontal bars across the image).
3. The zoom feature worked fine but somehow the preview which shown on the screen isn't, the live preview is low resolution and produce undesirable sharp blocks (which is just as annoying as using a low ended product).
The camera software is primitive and is lacking lots of the standard features of a camera.
But I'd expect much more quality from them and nevertheless to say it is pretty unexpected to see the full HD display while still leaving lots of blanks for the critics to fill up (wondering why the reviewers never mentioned the negative points on the tablet) and usability problems which its users faces.
A lot of people probably don't care about the camera but hey this tablet isn't cheap to start with and it's made by a reputable brand name in the technology industry (& they don't make Cameras...).
If you watch the live preview closely, you can actually see the horizontal bars moving down the screen (just like the refresh rate of the good old analog TV).
Is there any experts with cameras who can tell me how do you capture an image without the presence of the horizontal bars?
Is this tablet with high-end specification and without quality?
But if you are just an average user; Do you still get really annoying about all of the problems on the tablet?
*# One other thing which is rather inconsistent, I noticed is the file modified date in the recently released FW updates "*_epad-user-9.4.5.22.zip", all of the files within it are dated with 22/3/2011 11:21AM. And the zipped file within "*_epad-user_9_4_5_22_UpdateLauncher.zip" are dated 15/6/2012 and this update was only uploaded a few days ago!
I remember my phone originally had a lot of issues with camera...it ended up being software. I tried Camera Zoom FX, and the pictures started to come out quite a lot better. LGCamera works great as well, and also has a video mode. Try those, that might increase your picture quality and also gives you a lot more control over pictures.
As good as the camera was built up by Asus, its still a tablet camera. Tablet cameras have a reputation for being kinda crap.
But I agree with KilerG's post. Try other camera software and see if that helps. Or perhaps try turning down the resolution.

I wasn't expecting to become a professional photographer with this tablet, much less shoot my next great film on it (even though if I did, that would be hilarious). I probably won't spend a lot of time using the camera, and when I do, I think that's it's adequate for what it is...a tablet camera.
Remember how Apple talks up their camera? It still doesn't take the most amazing photos, especially on the iPad (well they talk up everything that is basically worthless, so maybe that's a bad example). I can get a better picture from a Samsung or HTC phone 9 times out of 10 than on a fruit device.

So; I guess you didn't buy a tablet because of its camera, but you see the point of having a camera on the tablet is to make life easy and fun.
It should be expected of from a tablet, various components of the tablet works but its not perfect, why? Maybe the manufacturer can answer the question.

This is maybe philosophical.
Being the best does not infer perfection.
Ahhh, but I too would prefer perfection. Those cameras cost 10's of thousands and almost require a degree to operate. For 500 bucks and a ton of more relevant things it does I am happy with the best of crap.
So to speak.
Lets just hope for the best of apps to get us home.

The quality remains the same as the horizontal bars are still present in the still image.
I took this picture today and it seemed to come out perfectly fine. There were no lights on and it was starting to get dark. My phone's camera would have taken an incredibly grainy picture, but this seemed to work just fine.

Blurry camera images.

Is anyone having issues with the camera? When I pinch to zoom in, I find the camera not properly focusing. This seems to occur no matter if it on single shot, hdr, etc. Its not ALL photos, just moist of them. Used to have thunderbolt and did not experience this type of issue there. The reviews praised the s3 camera, so i am disappointed. Anyone have any advice? Thanks

Unfortunately I also am experiencing this same problem. I dont have a real solution but to use an alternative camera application, and hope it helps.
Try a diff gallery. I found sometimes the gallery will not focus in. Although sometimes I have found myself dissapointed in the camera. There are 2 different cameras in the s3 one is app lower quality.

You're not alone! The camera is almost always blurry for me, and sadly, bad enough for me to say this camera SUCKS. I really hope this is a firmware issue.
I've looked at the pictures on my computer as well, and they're just not nearly focused.
+1 on all of it for me
So let me get this straight:
While you're in camera mode, about to take a picture, and you pinch to zoom-in, the photo gets blurry?
Or are you talking about in the gallery when you pinch-to-zoom on a picture you've already taken?
If it's the former, I believe it's one of two things: 1) firmware issue, or 2) hardware issue. If it is indeed a hardware issue, you can probably get a replacement free of charge from Verizon.
If it's the latter, I think you just have to wait a few seconds for the phone to show you the high-res version instead of the low-quality blurry snapshot.
My sister has the same issue on her Galaxy Nexus. But I'm assuming that's not the case, since the blurriness usually goes away in a matter of seconds?
I've found the camera pretty crummy in anything but full-light settings. It's really frustrating.

That statement pretty much applies to any camera/phone.
One thing you guys might want to try is using the app "CameraFX"
CameraFX has a pretty cool feature that allows you to take a pic by voice activation. I find the camera phones are much harder to hold steady and take a clear shot than a real DC (& I'm a pro photographer). Using the voice activation allows you to hold the camera super steady & then just say a word like now or smile etc when you're ready to take the shot.
I have my camera set to take a shot with the volume button, but the voice activation is still easier to use IMHO.

Using the voice activation allows you to hold the camera super steady & then just say a word like now or smile etc when you're ready to take the shot.
I have my camera set to take a shot with the volume button, but the voice activation is still easier to use IMHO.

This camera doesn't focus properly. Period. I'll do side-by-side shots with my Rezound and iPhone. The GS3 camera is woeful in anything but full, natural light.

I agree that the Rezound camera is better, I have three Rezounds & the camera is super (for a phone camera).
I really have not had any focusing issues with the G3 although I don't use it a whole lot because I usually have access to a real DC.

My sister has the same issue on her Galaxy Nexus.

That's another issue entirely, the Nexus is notorious for having an atrociously bad camera.
+1, I have noticed that a lot of my pics are coming out blurry, I thought it was maybe because the camera was sensative to the slightest twitch and that I was maybe moving it mid shot.

I think it is to some extent, turn on anti-shake, but that doesn't totally fix it. It's pretty frustrating that this phone seems like a step backwards in terms of camera.

That is why I posted what I did about CameraFX.

This miui camera works pretty well just install the apk no changes to permission needed. It does not use the ffc so use stock app for that.

I'm not talking about the camera quality, itself. I mean in the gallery, when you're looking through pictures you've already taken, the pictures are a bit blurry at first, but then clear up into the original (higher) resolution.

@OP: Are you sure the camera is focused?

Gotcha, you definitely have to wait a few seconds or all the images look awful.......

I took some pictures today in my home office (have a floor lamp...decent lighting but not super bright) with both the GS3 and the Fascinate (GS1). The GS1 pictures are better. This is VERY disappointing

It is the former. I tried camera 360 today and photos seemed ok. That app only alows 2x zoom. I was outdoors photographing dinosaurs in full sun. Perhaps i try another photo app, camera fx or something like that and see how it goes. Thank you for the reply. As I see I'm not the only one with this issue, I'm glad that we can discuss it and see what helps for us.
Camera Zoom FX as mentioned is a good alternative, for me I think the instant shutter makes it more blurry because you don't have any time to steady the camera after pressing the button. Camera Zoom has a slight lag. I would also try ProCapture, which I think does a better job than Camera Zoom but YMMV.
Camera sucks.. Period.. Pictures are horrible for an 8mp camera..
