Exchange Galaxy S for Nexus S? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello nexus folks,i wanted to ask your opinion , if I should sell my galaxy s and buy a nexus s, because gradually the developers are moving on to the nexus s for android development, and other then the aesthetic appeal of nexus s it's pretty much the same as galaxy s, what do you guys think i should do? your replies would be appreciated

The i9000 is a Well suppprted phone. And samsung it's on the verge of releasing 2.3. If you could do it for free, I would go for it, otherwise hold off.
Sent from my Nexus S

Why would you want a nexus S when galaxy s already has 2.3 and that was really the only thing NS had over SGS...oh and better GPS
Id wait for galaxy s 2 will be out in a week or two
also there really isn't much support in dev section for NS
not saying the NS is bad becasue its not but to late in the game better phones are already available

I think its worth it. I came from the vibrant to the nexus s. Although hardware is near identical, running the latest OS makes all the difference. It may be true that the galaxy s will receive 2.3, but the nexus s will eventually receive 2.4, again giving it the upperhand with a more optimized OS. To me, the difference between 2.2 and 2.3 on similar devices were huge, and I would expect the same for 2.3 to 2.4.

thanks for replying guys, and no ,the exchange wouldn't be for free, id have to pay a little more then a $100 for the exchange , but like i said i wanted to know what the nexus owners have to say about their custom roms because at the end of the day these devices are more or less the same except for factory built ext 4 FS Nexus S has, regarding the Galaxy 2, ive heard that samsung is going to lock the OS (locked bootloaders or something), which basically means no custom roms??

Not for nothing but vibrant has alot going for it over nexus s imo id rather get a sg2 or a sensation I wouldnt pay any money for an exchange No Gorilla Glass,No 720p,No Codecs,No TV out 3.5mm,No SD Card,
Things it has over the Vibrant:
GPS Fixed
Ext4 Filesystem
Google Coding it
Form Factor
The phone is pretty fast
If the Nexus S gets 3.1 or whatever the next android version is then maybe the nexus s might be worth it but for now personally would go the sg2,sensation or maybe even g2x route because it has new bands on it for at%t

The G2X doesn't have quad-band UMTS support like initially reported.

U got to be kidding galaxy s for nexus s i dont think so
The Google experience is just too good to give up while all these phones
Getting gingerbread now nexus s will be on ice cream soon

I have the nexus s and my friend has a galaxy s. The phones are almost the same.
You have no reason for changing your phone (and pay for it).
When google releases the new android version, be sure there will be a new newer google phone that runs this version. Then it might be the time for an upgrade.

What do you mean when you say the Nexus S doesn't have any Codecs? None at all, or are there some commonly used codecs missing?

Google teaming with samsung - fail?

I believe that new Nexus S will let the google down. I had many issues with samsung products in the past, and I saw glitching stock vibrants. What you guys personally think about it?
I think Samsung wants to screw over their current customers. Then again, I am assuming they are doing this because of the leaks.
Yay, lets mix freedom and complete control and see what we get.... It's retarded and the nexus name is forever tarnished.
I would have loved to see the Nexus line stay with HTC but let's face it, they didn't do a great job with the Nexus One. Crappy digitizer and failing power buttons...
Nexus supposed to be the Android of all androids... But with samsung it will drown. I think dead buttons is nothing compare to a brick, which Nexus S will turn for sure.
Galaxy S phones failed big time. Lagging like hell and freezing. Not to mention previous samsung phones.
I could be wrong too. Lets see how Nexus S will go. Maybe samsung learned the lesson.
Do any of you guys have the phone? Did you create a thread just to bash something you haven't used? I have mine OCed to 1.4 GHz, running stable with CM7. Everything is blazing fast, as lag free as reasonably possible, and I have quadrant scoring at 3700+. Let me know when you can beat that.

Used one for 3 days before wishing the world was flat so I could throw it off the edge. Even with the "new version" the fragmentation compared to the first version of windows phone 7 is just awful. After playing with it I cant find much if any difference from 2.2. If I wanted to throw money away like that I'd buy a vibrant on craigslist for 150, add a front facing camera, then use it as toilet paper that being the most practical use for galaxy S garbage.

Actually I heard somewhere that the Nexus line is suppose to represent "pushing the Android line and what to expect from future Android phones."

Nope, happy with WP7, boy it's great to not lag on the homescreen
The Nexus S is a Samsung product that actually works. They've actually put a lot more effort in the Nexus S than they have the Galaxy S, which is sad to see on many levels. With the build of the Nexus S, and the power of hummingbird, the Nexus S is what all Galaxy S phones should have been. My Moment was a brick in terms of build, dropped it all the time but nothing went wrong with it. But the fact that it had no real hardware support for openGL, was built on 1.5 even though 1.5 didn't support CDMA, and the network issues were so far up there, I'd have to reset my phone 3 times a day! I had to send it back 2 more times and the same thing over and over! Rooting wouldn't help either! So they try to pawn the Intercept off to me as an "upgrade." A smaller resolution that most apps don't support, a slower network, and no Amoled screen? That's not an upgrade. When I had my Epic, the build quality was okay, nothing close to what my Evo is though. But I was tired of waiting for an update that should have come stock on the phone! With a phone like the Galaxy S there is no reason is should have shipped with 2.1! I'm glad Google is the one supporting the Nexus S and not Samsung, because then the Nexus S would have been stuck on 2.3 for half a year after the next Android comes out. I wouldn't mind the Nexus S, but that would be the only Samsung phone I would buy now. After 2 that had terrible support from Samsung, yeah right.

Disagree with you a little bit there. I've got a Samsung TV, and Bluray player and both are amazing. It's their phone products that aren't too great. The Nexus S like I said, is what the Galaxy S should have been.
Samsung's hardware is amazing in my opinion.. Their tv's are the best,, and we saw it on our samoled screens.. I show my phone's picture to people and they are wowed... My vibrant is nice rooted on froyo.. But stock.... It's a piece of...
Thank xda for awesome developers.
samsung's software (touch wiz) sucks..
they don't release updates or keep their word.. They piss enough people off. But people keep coming back..
The nexus is saved by google. but honestly.. The nexus one set new standards on upcoming android phones. We didn't see much competition.. The nexus s came out.. With the same hardware we saw two seasons ago.. New standards? Na I don't think so.. instead we are looking forward to dual core phones.. 4g capable phones.. And to me the nexus isnt much of a difference from what we already had.. Cmon samsung! You should have surprised us with new shzz!
Still love my Vibrant though.. Just wish it was officially on froyo, had an FFC, perhaps some 4g capability... Psh.. I WISH! -__-"
Here I agree. I have samsung tv myself, and it is good. I also had their portable audio players, but they were bad. Nexus S has no sd card slot, 16 gb isnt bad, but what about powerusers? No 3G + support, full 4G coverage is still in the far future. Processor is still the same as in previous phones. No gig of ram. Its like a tiny upgrade of nexus one, not counting 4G and front camera. Oh wait, isnt back camera is 5 megapixels?
They should stop making dozens of models, and create 1 master phone, that kicks asses.

That's sort of what they do now. They have two basis for their major phones.
Hummingbird
or
Samsung S3C6410
They've used Hummingbird in all of their high end phones, and the S3 in their mid-low end phones, and their older flagships like the Spica, the Moment. It's used now in another Galaxy phone I know(Not sure which one), I believe the Behold II has the cpu just not clocked as high, the Transform uses it, and the Intercept uses it.
I have sold my Wave S8500 and Galaxy I5800...I have learned my lesson.....No more Samsung produtcs for me.
Bad quality hardware and bad software support (updates, etc.) and bad customer service.
Google is making a huge mistake here!!
put simply...samsung hardware rocks, but samsung software blows. they really need to dump touchwiz and start from scratch...but imagine htc sense running on a galaxy s...epic win
I own both a Nexus one and a Nexus S. The NS is by far the better phone. Sure the N1 has metal and looks great it is in no way comparable to the NS. No android phone out right now compares with the NS.

Is Nexus S worth it?

What do you guys think? I just got a new Vibrant from Asurion that I could sell for 300 bucs and then buy the Nexus S for 229. Is it worth the hassle?
Im guessing you had to pay 130 or whatever it is for the new unit in that case I would say no id probley wait for the next gen of phones to come out.Right now my friend is gonna let me use his upgrade because he owes me money and is gonna let me use his upgrade to get nexus S or I could get a g2 or mytouch4g thinking about the mytouch but meh I have a vibrant atm if it werent for it being a nexus id doubt I would get it my point is probley not worth it for you
If you already have a current gen phone. Then No
if your good with the vibrant i'd say no.
But if you really want stock android, and you don't mind shelling out the money then go for it.
[Q] Nexus S vs Vibrant?
I'm trying to decide if its worth the cost to sell my Vibrant and get a Nexus S. The issues on my mind are:
1) Samsung is very slow on OS updates to the Vibrant. Who will be providing the updates to the Nexus S. Is it straight from Google or will it be through the many months of delay coming from Samsung/T-mobile?
2) The Vibrant doesn't have an FM radio. Does the Nexus S?
3) The Vibrant's GPS still doesn't work well for me after the fix. Is it known if the Nexus S has a well working GPS?

1. Google will be supporting the Nexus S directly, so updates will be delivered OTA directly, not through Kies.
2. I don't believe either has an FM radio.
3. The GPS has been fixed on the rooted Galaxy S ROM's for a bit and the GPS chipset was specifically changed near last minute on the Nexus S. I haven't read anywhere that commented about this, but I feel very confident there won't be a problem with the GPS like the Galaxy S devices had when launched.

1) The Nexus S is a google dev phone that way it will get the latest versions of android within 1-2 weeks of being announced as long as you remain stock.
2) According to the specs the Nexus S does not, but most devs are 99% sure that it's in there and just like the Nexus One will have to be enabled through a custom rom.
3) Samsung recently switched out the GPS antena in the nexus s, and the galaxy s issue was mostly software as they now work a lot better, so the Nexus S one should be just fine.
Is The Nexus S Worth a 2 Yr Contract ?
I was thinking about buying an NS but being its Christmas time,
and my contract has been up for a couple months (from the G1),
I was thinking about just re-upping a 2 year contract and get it for $199.00.
Now that its been in the hands of you genius's in here for a few days,
whats your opinion.
Is it worth a 2 year contract or should I wait on some of the dual core
phones rumored to hit next year ?
I just sold my G2 on CL and went back to my N1.
I need some honest opinions please.
EDIT: Question two:
As I was trying to re-up the contract last night at Best Buy,
I found all re-ups are shipped to you.
The only phones they had in stock were unlocked.
I'd like to know what the difference is between the unlocked one that
I would have to buy outright and the one I'd get shipped to me if I re-up a two year contract.
Thanks for the input.

As far as the difference between the $529 version and the $199 version, there is not one. Naturally, anything you order online would have to be shipped(because they do not offer a in-store pick up option for this item.) When it comes to purchasing in the store it all depends on the location. If they sell T-mobile, they will be able to give you the phone upon purchase. As for the other stores, they are under contract with the other carriers not to offer T-mobile services, and thats why they "technically" can not upgrade and sell in store. they can sell the $529 version, because it is not labeled as an T-mobile product, because that is the price directly from the manufacturer. I was in your shoes when it came towards making a decision. I got the G1 when it was first released, and had not upgraded, or had another android device since. My job provided me with a blackberry, so i was just using that. I reallly missed android, so i figured why wait? it is a whole lot better than what i had (G1 and BB 8520). I bought two; one outright, and one on upgrade. If i had a N1 or G2, i would wait until March to consider an upgrade, but for ME, i had to make a move-i could not take it anymore!
vibrant is better IMO
it has external SD, while the Nexus S has no external SD
the vibrant only lacks the front facing camera
everything else is basically the same
I had vibrant and only thing I liked more was all the codecs. And kept going back in forth couldn't decide if I wanted to keep nexus s but got a nice offer on my vibrant so...I'm happy now but do miss codec other than video support my nexus s is better don't care about 720p. Think I shot maybe 3 clips on vibrant to show off and 16GB is plenty for me. Had 32GB total on vibrant and never used more than 12gb and most was used up by 720p movies. I wanted for exclusive updates and more love from developers here ...I mean only been 2 weeks and already have CyanogenMod 7
But I also had vibrant for like 5months if u just got then idk I'd say keep vibrant it's great phone

if you want a vibrant on crack yes.
from 2.1 to 2.3 is a good enough reason.
screen is the same. even if the screen is a bit curved on the NS.
if you dont care for SD storage
i would def. jump from a vibrant to a NS. if you like that one you will love it. thats just MY opinion. seems like too many people here have the "NO DONT DO IT ITS THE WORST"
BE OPEN MINDED PEOPLE!
doesnt hurt to try. if all else fails return the NS and get another vibrant.
Having owned the Vibrant prior to the Nexus S, I can say that I found it to be a massive upgrade. Yes, the hardware is pretty much the same, and you lose a few TouchWiz perks, as well as the microSD card slot, but I don't personally miss anything from the Vibrant, and Gingerbread is a quantum leap in speed, functionality, and efficiency as far as I can tell.
I recommend considering these questions:
-Is being able to mount SD storage important to you?
-Do you prefer the TouchWiz experience?
-Are you comfortable waiting for OS updates to clear with T-Mobile and Samsung?
-Does it bother you that phones with more powerful hardware will be available in just a couple months?
If your answers are "no," I'd say it's worth giving the Nexus S a shot (you can always return the thing within 30 days assuming you don't break it). If you answered "yes" to one or more of the questions, you're probably just as well or better off holding onto your Vibrant for now.

Do you own an NS? Right, thanks.
Also jumped from Vibrant to Nexus S. From my experience, the Nexus S is just better. It is faster and smoother. When I did a titanium restore, it was done very quickly compared to when I do it on the Vibrant (even after all those lag fixes and etc).
Anyways, I sold my Vibrant and made a profit, then bought the Nexus S. I plan on developing apps and wanted a phone that would get the latest updates (not via custom roms).
I went from a Vibrant to NS too and all I miss is the ability to play .mkv files. It's not a massive upgrade yet, but the main reason I switched is because of direct Google support.

If u don't mod, then NS, if u do mod, then Vibrant. Vibrant running perfect on Froyo 2.2 Nero V3 and voodoo.
Edit: what I mean is stock Vibrant is slow and running 2.1, Nexus S is fast out of the box.

I think his point was that many of the things one might miss on the Vibrant that are available on the Nexus S are or will be made available to Vibrant users via third-party ROMs and mods.

[Q] Should I buy the Nexus S?

looking to buy a SNS currently own a galaxs s i9000m
hi guy i own a samsung galaxy s i9000m from bell in canada and wanting to move to SNS mobilicity anyone have any advice? should i? any problems with the phone like SD card failiure and such? any hardware problems? any ad updates from samsung that renders the device useless?
updates are from Google directly, not Samsung.
Samsung provides the hardware, nothing more.

the SNS is safe, unlike the I9000M
no internal SD issue
it works great in either Wind or MobilityCity
no external SD, is very hard to go a day without it
it can get buggy with 2.3 is not that smooth, there are many apps that are not 2.3 ready, and FCs
updates are OTA direct from google
in SNS you will lose all the cool multimedia features from SGS
no MKV, no DivX, no AVI, no etc....

They're two different sceens. The Nexus S has 2 variants. None of them use "AMOLED"
I9020 Nexus S: Super AMOLED
I9023 Nexus S: Super LCD
And in my opinion, I9020 > I9023. Pretty sure the large % of the crowd would agree.
And yes, rooting is SO SIMPLE on the Nexus S. All you do is fastboot oem unlock, fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and flash a su.zip and you're rooted. The hardest part is installing the drivers and 2.3.X SDK etc etc.
And yeah you can get CM7.

Though there are users who will swear by SLCD instead.
A simple way to differentiate the screen.
SAMOLED : More vibrant colours and deeper blacks.
SLCD : Sharper and more clarity
Both screens are awesome though. You won't go wrong with either one
But if you're buying it in Singapore, it's going to be i9023 version, which is SLCD.
thanks.. Sooner i will get one...
Hi, I'm looking to buy a phone pretty much for Android development. I'd be looking to experiment and play initially, not for commercial use yet. I'd be looking to do some augmented reality apps, both position-based and location-based.
I don't really use phones for.. calls, but I would be looking to have this as a long-term investment that I'd like to last for a few years. Looking at the specs for the S on paper, it's a little disappointing in terms of power, especially when compared to the likes of the Samsung S2 or the HTC pyramid/shooter. I'm sure dual-cores will go from speed to speed before hitting quad though, but at 1Ghz, the Nexus S is essentially still like a Nexus 1, with a few more bits and pieces.
Watching a video - the story of the nexus - on youtube.com/googlenexus, one google guy implied that there's more to come from them, and I've read in a thread around here that they tend to release every 6 months. I'd be really peeved if I bought a Nexus S only for a new Nexus to come out in a few months time.
I am interested in Gingerbread, and Samsung's touchwiz looks so incredibly crap, so, long story short, for someone who doesn't want to buy phones too often, and would use it mainly for dev experimentation with the odd phone call, would the Nexus S really be worth it? I'd be prepared to wait a month or two and pay a bit extra for a dual-core.
Looking forward to hearing your opinions. Thanks
One reason why Google did not release a dual core nexus when they could have done it, is because Android OS was not optimized for dual cores yet. So even when other manufacturers starts to push dual core models. It won't really work as well as Nexus S until Google release a dual core Nexus in future.
Hummingbird is a still considered a huge upgrade over the 1st gen Snapdragon processor which the Nexus One had in terms of graphics capability. Thus making graphics intensive applications/games and UI enhancements such as live wallpapers a much smoother experience.
You can of course wait for the next Nexus to be out. But in terms of technology, you cannot finish waiting. After you get a dual core Nexus a quad core Nexus might be out in future. It depends on how you see things and whether you think the Nexus S would be worth the buy.
To me its well worth the buy.
Ahh, thanks for the reply. OK, so, I had a basic play on the Nexus S today. No internet or connectivity though, and only stock apps. The people in CPW didn't really know much about it Overall the phone feels very responsive. I previously had a Desire, which I sent back because it had a cracked case, and it felt sluggish at times. It's nice to see an Android system like its supposed to.
The Nexus S in UK is £429. The 16gb S2 is down for £530ish. It's hard to think that for a little bit more I'd be getting dual-core so that even though Android isn't yet ready for dual-cores yet, it would be in later versions. The problem is the Samsung UI though,
I don't want to buy one of the latter single-core phones only for it to vanish in the power of dual-cores. For example, experimenting with augmented reality - 3d models on screen as opposed to info boxes - I'd imagine would be pretty intensive.
The Nexus S seems to be a basic prototype of where the new phones should head.
I don't know. I'm getting itchy fingers!

I'm getting itchy fingers!

i too have itchy fingers. although i feel that the nexus and evo 3d arent significant enough jumps to make me switch from my evo. i would like the speed of the evo shift's cup/gfx and/or the hummingbird but the form factors that they are available in dont really do it for me. almost 100% decided on sticking with the evo for a little while longer...a brand new one at that

[Q] Is the Galaxy Nexus Upgrade worth is to Nexus S owners?

If I have a GSM Unlocked Nexus S running 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich, is the upgrade to the Galaxy Nexus worth it? What do you guys think? Let me know your opinions in a comment below. Thanks

This topic has been asked and answered several times. It's really a personal decision/opinion and everyone is different. Search is your friend. I'll get you started with one of the more recent discussions ...

If you really care about having the latest phone, massive screen etc. then go for it.
If you dont then I would just stick with the nexus s. I know I prefer the smaller overall size, more compact etc as well as the fact that the NS is pretty fast, receiving ICS updates etc... wouldnt want to carry one of these big beefy phones that keep being released, what happened to having a compact phone that fits in your pocket??
Does everything I want it to.
Helllll yessss

To be honest, if I had the money, I would buy the Galaxy Nexus. Overall, it's a great device. Even so, Nexus S is still a good phone, mostly if you like to flash custom ROMs
At the end, it would be a personal decision, but if you asked me....I would buy it without hesitation.
It depends. It's definitely better than the Nexus S, but I didn't buy one because it was a downgrade from the SII. I refuse to ever buy any phone that isn't the best phone at the time of it's release. I know that phones become outdated all the time, but they should never be outdated on release.

The Nexus phones have never been the most powerful phones at the time of their release. Even the Nexus S wasn't. However, because Google develops the software using the Nexus phones, they always perform near the top of the class or at the top when it comes to performance.
Somehow I prefer galaxy note over galaxy nexus….

I'm satisfied til now with my nexus s. But maybe before year ends i'll replace this with galaxy nexus, just waiting for the price to drop a little.

Once the GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus is available here in the States, I'll probably grab one on contract if I can. I'm not going to pay the import prices for a GSM Galaxy Nexus. It's a very nice phone, but it's not nice enough to justify those kind of prices; plus, I refuse to switch my phone service to Verizon. I have a data plan with them for my Xoom and that alone makes me feel like a dirty whore. I'm a VERY satisfied T-Mobile customer.
If you're enjoying your phone why not just wait till the next nexus

So what was the better phone then? I may have missed it, but I looked pretty thoroughly for a phone around the Nexus S' launch time, and as far as I could tell, it was the best.
Galaxy S. Same RAM/CPU/GPU, but has 720p recording, FM Radio and it was released around 5 months earlier.
This is kind of offset with some gps problems, touchwiz and no camera flash.
..
I would consider only S2 if I am in the market for an upgrade from nexus s.just my 2 cents.
Cant find any difference between them except 3d game

Starting to look like Google 5.0 Jelly Bean will be releases before we get ICS

no big news there
I like the mention of the upgrade alliance. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me
Nexus devices from now on. Mind has been made up. This bull**** I've been suffering since the x10. Then the captivate, I'm done. Last device that's not nexus. I don't even care if the hardware is weaker than the other phones, the software matters way more and it's not like the nexus devices are severely under powered either.
It's totally ****ty that the devs have to support devices to keep it going like the way it should be going. They do the best they can but the direct Google upgrades is something that nobody can compare with.

Really wish Samsung would just start putting out Android releases with their drivers and nothing else so we could get these updates faster.

Agreed. But not to the point of only buying nexus devices, they're always lower than competition in terms of specs. That being said, its very true they see updates first. A few weeks to maybe a month KR two I can understand, but sometimes the delay is just ludicrous
I can't wait until manufacturers stop messing around with adding their own crud to the phones so they ha e to do far less work to push an update.

not fair, I would definitely get a nexus if it came to tmobile, hell I don't care if the specs are worse, I want updates.

yea coming from the nexus one this has been pretty weak. problem is I just can't justify spending 500 bucks on a phone anymore. Also I don't know if a device that you purchase from a different carrier will have LTE support and I can't live without LTE anymore. we'll see. I think that if we had exynos then the update issue wouldn't be so much of an issue.
If you had an exynos it would still take half a year to update assuming the update comes out this month.
Nexus was LTE I get it.....
Do the Nexus phones get more major releases then other phones? Seems to me they get the interim releases quicker but one major release at most. I doubt the Galaxy Nexus will get anything past 5.0, & if it does the performance will be far worse then whatever new phones are out at the time with it preloaded.
Of course Samsung & others will want to differentiate themselves from the others through customization. Android is just way too crowded with devices & manufacturers for them not to have to try.

Since Nexus phones are AOSP devices, they pretty much get every Android update, since OEM's don't have to do their bull**** to it. You can put me in the "Nexus Phone Only" group for the future. I really am tired of the bull****.
Depends on what you mean by all updates. The N1 for example went from 2.1, 2.2 & 2.3 none of which I would call major releases, & I would argue that the official 2.3 release made the phone worse.
This is why apple and ios will always be superior imo
The 3gs was released in 09 and has ios5
ICS has been out for months and less than 1% of devices have it.
Hell a lot of 09 phones don't even have gingerbread yet...

yes but an 2009 iphone with ios5 does not improve the phone necessarily as would a 09 android wouldnt get any faster/ better with ICS which is designed for bigger screens and dual cores... i think its necessary to give up on 3yo+ phones, and apple releases 1 phone a year when ie. HTC releases 10...
but honestly i think 10+ is too many for consumers and the company itself to handle :/
The problem is us the consumer we kill ourselves to get the latest and greatest so as long as there's money to be made on us their going to keep producing new phones every 4 to 5 months with something better. Its a perpetual trap. New phone great system 4 months later new phone better system. Example the sgs 2. Then the skyrocket then the skyrocket HD and just for good measure throw the note in and then sgs3. You cant win.

This is mainly just a rumor still, but on the Samsung India Facebook page they mention how March 15 is when the millions of SGS II users will see 4.0
