The free ADW launcher will get you most of the above speed and customization but does not have the advanced features.
As for adfree - it was not working initially on CM7 - drove me crazy until they got a work-around, and then adfree fixed their APP. Don't think I could stand Google Android without it.
On that subject, the XDA forum is getting bloated with ad and tracking cookies (on computer) stopped by my spam filter, so page loading is slower than molasses - anyone else notice this?

no dude !!Adfree does NOT scan web page for anything. It does NOT work like a proxy. It does NOT filter anything.
Adfree uses something called a hostfile to remap DNS names of ad servers to an IP address that is inaccessible. The default is 127.0.0.1 which is the identity IP address... I.e. your phone. The only way it would slow you phone down is if you've installwd something with a webserver on your phone

You can also download this host file from some of the windows support sites and it works perfectly on android tested it on my mytouch 4g, streak 7 and xoom. I think that ad free actually pulls this same file and uses it.
it goes in /system/etc
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
edit: it also gives a good explanation about host files and how they work

I think the phone is fast as it is...So far...

I'm not sure if this is allowed, but since it's a direct link from beejive.com, I think it should be? I'm not actually in the beta.

If not, can a mod please delete the thread? Thanks
I might give it a try. I don't IM much these days but it's still nice to have a good client there for when you need it..
ATM i'm using the official msn messenger for android (without ads mod).
Do msn have official apps on android? What the name of the app?

No it's not msn droid.
It's official msn, but developed by PICA (chinese company http://www.pica.com/)

I'm don't think it's available in english market, so heres a link to the apk (it is a free app, not warez) http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BALZ1U08
It is modified to remove ads (the official one has ads >_<)

needs work but pretty good so far...will be paying for it once it becomes available...
Nice
Seems to work pretty good. I like the ease. It does appear to be on all the time though but I've not seen a significant battery drop to warrant removing it. Really wish they would have opened the beta up for more people, I hated just downloading it but not being able to participate in bug posting.
Actually you can participate, Maybe not bugs, but fatal errors that cause the app to crash you can send email logs of when the app crashed directly to them. After the app has a force close it will ask you if you want to send the log when the app crashed to them by e-mail.

You have to rename the file to change it to .apk file. (at the moment it's named BejiveIM.apk.zip)
If you have file extensions hidden then unhide them and remove the .zip and save.
I was getting a "Timedout" and then "no client key" yesterday but the app started to work again late last night. I'm not too sure I like the size of the icon like others have said, but I do like its the most stable out of the clients I've tried without draining my battery.... much.

Text based browser, like Lynx, for Android?

Hey guys - I know this has been asked before, but I've been unable to find a decent answer:
Is there any Lynx-like browser for Android? I don't mind if it runs in the terminal or whatever, but I reckon it would do my limited data quota a massive favour.

why don't you just disable the downloading of images?

Have you tried Opera Mini? If you are worried about your data usage, I think you'll love its server-side compression technology. Well, depending in what are your feelings about your browsing privacy.
I know I can disable images, and yes, I tried a couple of browsers with server-side compression, but I was really hoping for the plain simplicity of a Lynx-like app. Thanks for the replies so far!

lynx it's so cool for reading some heavy news websites that i ssh to home and use lynx from there
Hm, SSH to your home pc eh? Tell me more.

The other thing you might consider is RSS. I read a lot of websites like this. Most major news websites now support RSS. Good luck. Lynx is hard to read and manage as it was designed for an earlier implementation of the web.
I wonder if it isn't easy to do since 1) it's all open source and 2) it should be a textbook JNI port...

There are some instructions here, in chinese. If anyone does get a working binary, let us know;
http://www.embedu.org/Column/Column294.htm
Update: I followed the instructions, and it works. Here are the results:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16050683
I read through the instructions... Very nice and detailed directions there! However, they're not even using the NDK, they're compiling an ARM executable for Lynx (so if we go that route, the result would be a binary that has to be run from terminal emulator).
Food for thought...
Binary compiled successfully!
Done it!
I just followed the instruction from the chinese professor, and it works fine for me. I have created a tread for it at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16050683
The zip file is there, along with the instructions. Enjoy!

TextOnly browser for android which displays only content from the article by stripping ads, scripts and images
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.spacenext.textonly
There was something i used to do when i was browsing using an old Nokia dumbphone that might help.
Type the following into your address bar:
http://www.google.com/xhtml
Now search for the site you want to visit, i.e xda-developers, and click on the link. You should now be seeing it in a low data format. It's not pretty but it works pretty well on a mobile browser.
If you want you can then bookmark the site as it is, so that it will still have that formatting when you return to it next. Obviously, for every site you want to visit you have to go through the above, but if you also bookmark the xhtml version of google you can always start your browsing session from there and just bookmark all your reformatted favourites as you go.
For that mobile view you can just use the "mobile view (GWT)" option in Dolphin Browser HD

Little Web Browser is pretty similar to Lynx. Free, but a HUGE fee if you want to get rid of the ads.
It is amazing how you'll always have at least one idiot in almost every forum who has no clue to what the correct answer might be but instead of shutting his ugly mug he tries to be a smart-ass and suggest a retarded "solution" that the OP had already discarded even before he asked. "Eh, why don't you disable images on Opera? (monkey squeaks)" ... well no ****tard, that's not a solution not even a proper answer to the question.

(Finally solved) How to prevent app from closing???

Yes guys...! Finally problem is solved guys. I got one paid app on market 'ram manager' which has special features to control ur ram. Especially it has option for multitasking with non killing apps. Means u can now multitask & still ur apps will run in background until you choose it to close. I have tested it since 1 hour. I have opened gallary, ucbrowser, opera mobile & go launcher (above mentioned every app is so much ram hungry app). And I am amazed that even after 1 hour all apps are still opened. Its really so amazing guys Really its a worth app.

I am really fed up of this problem. I surf alot xda using opera. Opera mobile nearly take 30-40 mb ram. So for me I get nearly 130-140 mb free ram. But even though when I try to open some other apps then automatically android closes opera. So I have to reopen it. No problem in re-opening an app but then it start to load links which I have been surfing which really annoying me ::
I want simple multi tasking like nokia which keep open every app until u choose it to close it. I am really impressed with multi tasking of nokia.
Can anybody provide a solution, app or script or anything which will KEEP APP IN OPEN STATE until I choose it to close it ?? I searched on net. I found same complaints on net related to android muti tasking...!!! I dont use any task killer app.

try this. I don't know if it's only the paid version that allows exempting, but it's worth a shot. once you go into the processes, you can click the browser specifically and click to change it from "excluded (no)" to "excluded (yes)". this should make it exempt from android's method of memory recovery (not a task killer app)
Are you using this? Try disabling it and see what happens.
You can do it from terminal emulator:
Code:
su

and if you want to re-enable it:

Sorry I forgot to follow up, a solution has been found after many hours of searching: using the "Xposed app settings" add-in for the Xposed Framework will let you whitelist applications from Android's "banhammer of destruction" and it works particularly well on devices with little free ram.

Adblock for Standard Browser on One S

Hey Guys,
I couldn't find a thread about this particular issue atm so I'm going to start a new topic.
The only browser I could get an AdBlock extension for up until now is Firefox but Firefox does not appear to be as powerful as the integrated "Sense 4.0" internet browser (is it Opera?).
Anyway, I am quite bothered by random pop-up advertisement and similar bullcrap but I was unable to identify any feature in the settings that would let me supress it. Is there a "Firefox-like" add-on for the HTC-Stock-Browser?
Please help me...I freakin' can't stand pop-up-adds...kinda triggers an anaphylactic reaction in my brain...
Cheerios and thx in advance...
Forgot to add: Phone is rooted...
Try adfree in the okay store it removes ads from everything including apps
Thx mate! This looks very promising...
