[Q] wifi range of the eee transformer - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am very interested in buying the eee pad transformer when it is released in north america.
To anybody that has one now, can you tell me how good or bad is the range of the wifi for the transformer? How strong is the wifi signal while going around your house?
I am asking those questions as the wifi range of my Notion Ink Adam sucks. Big time.
Cheers,
Stephane.

I've found it to be very good. Better than the ADAM.

Thanks,
exactly what I was looking for!
Cheers,
Stephane.

I don't have the ADAM any more, but the ASUS seems to compare with the iPAD. I went to the furthest part of my house and both devices had signal, where sometimes my laptop machine can struggle.
Maybe someone else can give a more scientific analysis with actual figures

It also depends on whether you have a "g" or "n" router, as well as being faster the frequency for an "n" router is stronger and travels further.

It's about equal to a samsung galaxy tab 7', which was slightly less than a dell streak, if that's any help!

Transformer vs. Iconia vs. Thrive

Just a quick overview: I was in Best Buy the other night, and fortunately, they had all 3 machines not only powered on, but also on WiFi. I couldn't resist this, since I'm beginning to seriously look at a 10" tab to replace my oft maligned (And rightly so) Gentough78. (Yeah, yeah.. I know) Anyway, having all 3 side by side was nice. Here's my thoughts:
Screen: The winner was the Thrive. It had very good contrast. The other 2 were completely acceptable though.
Case: I like the rubberized backing of the Thrive a LOT. That being said, it was a close 2nd place to the Xformer (Heretofore called the XF). Didn't care for the clunkiness of the Iconia.
WiFi performance: The Iconia stuttered a lot on the youtube video I was playing. The other 2 seemed to handle this just fine.
WiFi Tethering: The XF was the only one of the 3 that saw my hotspot on my Epic. This is a pretty big deal.
Snappiness: Hard to tell the diff between the 3, honestly. They were all nice.
Dock: Obviously this is an awesome on the XF
So... overall, as it stands, I'm seriously looking at the XF as my tab of choice. Just thought I'd share my thoughts here. How's the tun.ko working out on IPSEC VPN???
Fellow epic user! I was faced with the same decision and got the TF because of the hotspot issue. I have no regrets and i dont even have the dock. I use my stylus for most everything. I also like how the OS has no annoying UI over top.

i currently have both the thrive and transformer and i have to say you are wrong, the IPS display on the transformer is noticeably better. It's richer in color and has better viewing angles. I am returning the thrive because its just too fat!
Either way, they are good choices. I really don't need the ports on the Thrive, and I really like the TF's weight and thinness compared to the Thrive since I usually throw it in my bag, or walk around carrying it in my hand when I'm using it as a Mp3 player (which is all the time). Since the Thrive has a LED screen, blacks are probably darker than on the TF but I haven't tested.

I agree, I found the TF screen to be superior. The only other andriod tablet I thought had a display that could compete with the TF was the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Did you check to see if the brightness setting where set to the same approximate
brightness.
You can't test anything in 20 minutes at best buy. They all are a tie because ech line has a feature specific to its self. I think it comes down to personal preference and how will it be used. I chose the Asus because of the free software Splashtop and Polaris, but do wn a Acer too. The Acer states hooked up to my TV with wireless keyboard and mouse to stream movies or surf the web.

I made this thread to help kinda sort what each tablet has (most of them out there), might help you pinpoint.

Nope... should have. In all fairness, the screens were in pretty mucky shape too. They all had streaks and smudges from all of the dirty fingers of the crumb crunchers who had played with them. The 2 Xooms wouldn't even come on, so I didn't check them out (Although in all fairness, the $100 extra kind of excluded them anyway)
When I get a little closer to being actually able to afford one (I'm just over 1/2 way there now), I'll go give them a lot closer look, and I'll probably bring a microfibre cloth. I'd never let any of my screens get that nasty.
And I'll pay extra close attention to the viewing angles. That's something I hadn't thought of.

The Xoom, the screen isn't as good as the others. The color temp and viewing angle are inferior.

I bought the Iconia and returned it. I just thought the plastic port area on the sites ruined the high-end feel of the brushed metal. And it was too heavy to comfortably hold while reading. I love the ports though. The Toshiba tablet was just too huge. My TF is great. But build quality is so-so; I got a squeeky area around the power button. No big deal though.
Asus TF has the best screen and the value-for-money dock
Iconia has the full size usb port
Thrive has the full size usb port and hdmi port but loses out on weight and bulkiness.
and all three devices uses the same SoC, the Tegra2 so i wouldn't compare performance.
and there are other scientific ways to test the WiFi performance than testing with a youtube video

Sure, but with a locked down market and running fast through the testing since other people were looking, it was the 1st thing that came to mind. I'm not a professional reviewer, I just play one on TV...

I'd get the transformer. If you're referencing the BF deal then the Asus has 16gb for $250 while the Thrive is 8gb for $275. To me, that's no contest.

[Q] Transformer Prime and Exhibit II or Streak 7

My "dilemma" is that I am looking for a solution that will provide communications in a lot of places and not just be dependent on WiFi. I have had several Android tablets and both versions of the iPad at one time or another (primarily setting them up for family), and up to now have relied on a PHS-300 and a USB WiMax stick for communications for the tablet, and an Optimus V on Virgin Mobile for phone/VOIP.
So I have two solutions I am considering in a couple of weeks when I get my XMas bonus. In both cases I am planning to us T-Mobile as the provider using their new $30/month plan for 5 gigs of 3G/4G data and 100 minutes of voice, and GrooveIP to do VOIP (which is what I have used on my current phone).
Solution A is to get a Samsung Exhibit II, set it up with WiFi tethering, and then get a Transformer Prime. This will require me to carry a bag with the Transformer, and means I may sometimes have to rely on the phone where it isn't convenient to lug the Prime. On the other hand, the quad-core Prime may eventually let me do things I can't do on a dual-core machine, and it is a 10+ inch screen which should make for easier reading.
Solution B is to get a Streak 7 4G model and a stereo bluetooth headset. This would mean I'd have the tablet with me all the time (I borrowed my wife's Kindle Fire and confirmed it fits in my pants pocket), although calls might be a bit inconvenient if I don't have the headset handy. That is a dual-core tablet, and at this time, I don't know of many things in the Android market that I would need more than that to do.
Solution A runs around $800-$900, while solution B runs around $500-$600. So is Solution A worth the extra $300-$400 and the occasional inconvenience? Anything you know about any of the mentioned devices I might want to be aware of?
Thanks in advance!

Trying to help a friend decide TF101G 3g vs Ipad 2 3g

Well the story is quite simple. A friend of mine is thinking of getting a Tablet, and due to the excellent marketing of Apple she thought an Ipad 2 could be a good buy.
Profile of my friend.
1) No previous experience with either iOS or Android
2) No smartphone (at least yet)
3) No tablet
4) No laptop at home - to my knowledge
5) Good experience in Windows environment systems
She would like to know what she can do with an Tablet, as her PC at work serves most her needs.
As typing on the screen is not as pleasant as the real thing, I suggested that maybe a Asus Transformer TF101g could be a good alternative to look at.
1) It is almost like a netbook with the keyboard
2) Great battery life
3) It still is a Tablet
4) I prefer Android, and she would not have to deal with iTunes to connect to the iPad 2
1) As you might understand, she will not be rooting, flashing or hacking it in any other way. Because I do not own either of the devices I would like to ask you what is the out of the box experience of the TF101g.
*I will probably help her upgrade to the ICS if it is an official update, so she doesn't loose the warranty, if you think it is worth it.
2) The main question, is TF101g 16gb + 3g + Keyboard worth buying in May/2012? The price I have found it is about 530 EUR new (unboxed) with 2year warranty.
The Ipad2 16gb + 3g is about the same price.
I thought of the 3G version as with a simple SIM card and a cheap internet plan (12 EUR for 2Gb/month prepaid in Belgium) she would have internet anywhere in the country, plus she has no internet at home. Do you think that 2Gb is enough for light internet surfing, e-mails and some facebook?
I would like to know what are your thoughts on this choice Ipad2 3g vs Asus Transformer 3g (TF101g).
3) What would the advantages and disadvantages be in getting the Asus over the Ipad.
Thank you all for you help.
I think it would be better to wait a while and get a series 300 transformer 3G.
http://www.asustablets.us/
Then you have a thinner form factor a and a nice Dual core Qualicom 1.5 for the 3g (tegra 3 chip for the wifi only) for 25$ less than a new transformer tf101g. Asus has really stepped up their game with this tab and its nice and colourful as compared to the brown 101 as well as a lot sleeker.
But at the same time the iPad has a larger market and more people know how to use them. (also talking about the ipad is a little bit against the rules here so i won't go into detail)(which version of iPad would she be getting?)
With the iPad you are garenteed updates for i think 3 years with no chance at all of upgrades past that whereas the transformers have a community behind them so after the officially supported 2 years + asus's devotion to all of their devices and the community i can see the tf300 being supported and up to the latest version for 3 or 4 years
"Friends don't let friends use iOS"
Thank you both for you replies. Regarding the new Asus Prime the price difference IDs still considerable and there is no 3g version yet.
I don't understand why it is forbidden to objectively describe the advantages of one advice compared to other.
It would be nice for her to see someone else other than me promote the Android Tablet compared to the iOS.
Is the TGIF101g sluggish for every day use or does IV'S need a tegra 3 CPU to be fluid. Does this version have any major hardware bug?
Thanks for you replies.
What smartphone is she likely to end up with? Get a system that matches that.
I would never own any Apple product (personal reasons) so I have an Android phone and Android tablet. I run the same apps on one as I do the other. I also only pay for apps once, and they run on both.
Hi Johev,
don't know if the month May is a must for you, but some where soon asus will start in europe with this thing (I hope)
http://www.asus.com/Mobile/PadFone/#overview
that way you can have both. Like worwig says, most of the time, your current smartphone dictates what kind of pad you choose.
I thing that the T300 that mrevankyle mentioned will be a nice machine for what your friend will use it for.
I, for one, love the keyboard dock with my TF pad. I do a lot of mail, and like the keyboarddock for this.
goodluck
ps: I'm also no Ipad fan, dont like apple dictating me what I can do with a machine.

[Q] would it be a good idea to trade my tf300 for the prime?

i was offered a transformer prime for my tf300t. would it be a good idea to trade? what would be the pros vs cons besides no gps?
I wouldn't recommend it, unless the Prime is a recent serial, like one beginning with C3 or C4, and you have the option of return if something doesn't work.
Earlier serial primes had more problems.
If you have a working TF300 why gamble?
Pro's - much better screen on the prime, at least on paper. I don't really see that much difference in the real world. Primes screen is 600 nits max brightness, thats almost twice as bright as the TF300 - I find this somewhat useful outdoors and in dark movie scenes. Pro- bigger battery in the prime.
Con: Flaky wireless behavior in older serials. I have a C4 Serial and my WiFi BT and GPS all work fine.
Also, the Prime is more durable obviously because of the metal back. The TF300 is so thin, if you press on the plastic back, the screen will distort.

I was the owner of tf201 and that device is a huge mistake from Asus. C3 serial... HDMI is not working..GPS is useless, WIFI strenght is a shame... I have done: return it to store and now i have tf300.... Great tablet..WIFI is 100% better than on tf201.Everything is corected nicelly..
Keep the 300 its just as good as the prime
I have both and my TF201 doesn't have any issues that bother me...I'd still keep the 300. Just for the potential issues of wi-fi/gps.
There's a reason why he wants your tf300 better than his prime
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using Tapatalk 2
Would stay with the tf300. There are so many primes with big problems. Send mine back and bought the TF300. So stuck with it
My advice, keep your 300. I went through a handful of Primes and all of them had some "issue" (aside from the GPS and Wifi) I finally got fed up, sold it and bought a TF300. The only thing that I can say is that the screen on the prime had better contrast and sharpness. But unless you see them side by side you won't even know the difference. The 300 is a great tablet, everything works and I'm glad I swapped the Prime for it.

[Q] [Help] Battle of the Transformers

p.s Sorry if this is the wrong section.
Hello.
I've been wanting to sell my iPad 2 and get a Transformer tablet for awhile now. I finally have a chance to, and I really need the community's help on which model I should get.
Over the weeks I've been doing as much reading as I can but when I decide on one model the others give me a glare in the face and show off something that the model I've chosen doesn't have.
My main usage for the tablet is for Word processing and watching HD MKV videos. So I've been looking for the tablet to fit.
Here's what I can gather.
Asus Transformer TF101. First model Eee pad, I doubt I'll be getting it, even though it's the cheapest. I've read that it chokes on 720p MKV videos on most non-stock video players, so I'll probably skip this.
Asus Transformer Prime TF201. Second model, and the one I'm worried about the most. It's got most of the specs I want out of a tablet, and is rather cheap at this point too. HOWEVER, every review I read mentioned the horrible WiFi signal due to the metal backing case. The metal back itself is pretty sexy-looking, but I don't know if I want to get this after reading all the horror stories regarding the WiFi.
Asus Transformer Pad TF300. From what I know, it's basically a cheaper version of the Prime TF201. It does not have the gorilla glass which is what I'm afraid of. I won't be getting a screen protector for this so I'm afraid it'll scratch easily. I need clarification on this. It does not have a metal back as well so I'm afraid the plastic back will scratch too. I'm not concerned about the looks of the back, but I don't like my devices having incredibly noticeable scratch marks. I hope you guys can help me with this.
Asus Transformer Infinity TF701. It's the latest model, and the most powerful. It's got everything I want out of a tablet, but I'm not too keen on the crazy price to get it here. It can go upwards of $1000 where I live, nearly double the price of the iPad 2.
I'm mostly tied between the TF300 and TF701. I'm very interested in the TF201 too but I need professional clarification on the WiFi issues. I would use my tablet in a relatively small house, and the device and router would be separated by at most 3 walls. I don't use GPS so I don't care for it.
Knowing all this, what would YOU, the community, recommend for ME? If it seems like too much, just help me with the TF300 and TF201. I really can't decide.
Please help, thank you.
