Hello
I'm a proud owner of a Galaxy S I9000 and I know how a custom ROM can greatly increase a phone's value (when it comes to performance and user experience).
I'm considering buying a phone as a gift, but I'm not rich enough to get another SGS, so I thought a "budget" Android device (Wildfire, Optimus One, X8 etc.) would be the best option.
Can you recommend a popular phone, one with lots of available hacks, tweaks, ROMs etc.? Hardware specifications aren't that important.
Thanks
Me thread be gettin' no love
Is there anything similar I missed while searching?

Hi
I have searched the forums but have not found the answer to my question yet.
I want to know which is the best budget Android phone (Magic?, Dream? etc) as I intend to root and install my a custom Rom. I can't afford the Droid or Nexus yet.
Any ideas which is the best to go for?
Thanks
John
I'm a fairly new Android user endowing myself with the wonders of rooting. I currently have the myTouch 3G, it was fairly cheap (not so much anymore due to T-Mobile's unreasonable pricing as compared to Nexus One). On the bright side, the myTouch (G1 too) has the most custom ROMs available to an android device. But do note that most of the ROMs aim to achieve the features of newer devices. So it would be reasonable to just buy a new device that costs 50 dollars more than a myTouch...I'm looking at you Nexus. ):
Really android geeks buying desire not galaxy S ? So no good roms and no apps for galaxy S ? Which phone to choose better from theese 2
Please guys help
How about ROM's for galaxy S ? And i now that there's a OpenDesire for HTC Desire which makes desire super phone. Will be there something for samsung ? At least fixes or smthg?
Please answer me guys, i have a few hours to decide. I dont now much about androids
The Desire is a) made by HTC, which this site has always been focused on, and b) very similar to the pre-rooted Nexus One, which is popular with hackers. The Desire has also been out a fair bit longer. So there's an established community around the Desire, and I think the non-HTCness of the Galaxy S is likely to mean it will never quite be its equal in terms of development here.
However, I've seen mention that developers are waiting for Froyo before focusing on the Galaxy S. We do have developers working on it, and there's work on porting CyanogenMod to the Vibrant (a Galaxy S series phone). So I can't guarantee it will ever match the Desire, but it's not being ignored either.

the Samsung galaxy is a pretty powerful phone great hardware other then the few gps issues and the lag which if you dont over bog the phone with apps its generally a great phone. personally i am still running the stock rom that i have highly modified including boot up and boot down and removed all the crapware from the carrier its a wicked machine if done right and a tank of a phone almost impossible to brick
if you know what you are doing you are golden if you dont know what you are doing your going to end up figuring it out
samsung galaxy s: stock rom rooted
D-T-Mobiled
Will be there something similar like OpenDesire for samsung galaxy S ?
Hi guys,
I'm an ex-owner of pocket Androids, HTC Aria and HTC Wildfire. As i lost both of them yesterday after being snatched, I'm thinking to avenge my lost my something new, and better, but still, Android ofc.
So since yesterday, i've been thinking about these three phones but still, i cant decide which one to go as all these 3 met my budget requirement. So guys, would you mind helping me decide on which device i should aim for? As i never use any samsung phone before, can anyone advice me the quality of the phone?
ps: i use a lot of gps, cameras, wireless for my daily work routines, and play games and watch movies to release tension.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
afiQ
If it were me, I would choose Desire HD.Because of its better GPS functionality.
If I were you, I choose SGS is the best, too bad there's no flash on camera
HTC , because: better GPS , Flash , Big Screen , Sense .
what about nexus s? i heard it is comparable and maybe even better than iphone 4? is it worth?
I use Galaxy S, what I can tell you is that Galaxy S is really really really a good phone, I love it.
I'm the owner of SGS. I suggest you to choose Nexus S. You will get more support from Google directly.
Can't speak to the HTC, but I have both the Nexus S and SGS. Both are great devices, and very similar, but speak to very different users.
Choose the SGS if you want a wide selection of custom ROMs, fantastic user support, loads of device-specific apps, etc. Choose the Nexus S if you want timely 'official' OS updates or absolutely must have a camera flash.
Having both side by side, I'm impressed by how smooth the Nexus S w/ stock GB feels compared to my heavily customized SGS GB ROM. The SGS still wins in Quadrant and synthetics, but the Nexus just feels smoother, and is general more bug free.
Cheers

I prefer to have the Desire HD due to the fact that I like Sense very much.
Desire HD FTW! A really good device.
Hey guys, I have a Samsung galaxy gio using Cyanogenmod 9. And I must say it is quite snappy compared to gingerbread. I love the phone to death, but its jut not a really great phone. It is limited by ram, poor CPU and the screen size is just to small for my liking.
But today my friend asked me if I wanted to but his Xperia arc. He has a gold iPhone now. The kid goes through phones like crazy, so it probably didn't get used alot, so I'm sure it is in good shape.
He asked for 250, but I think I could get it for 200 - 225, but first I want to know:
1. Is it easy to root, mod, get CWM, flash roms, kernels etc. Unlocked boot loader?
2. Is that a reasonable price?
3. Is it a good phone with decent hardware? Like CPU speed ram, multitasking ability etc.
4. Is there a Cyanogenmod 9 available for it that gives me a ICS Xperience? (
gio won't receive ICS update (yeah until sams*ng 'realize' there were many its user wanted official release of ICS), if u have more budget you can consider buy Arc or another worth phone such as SGS3
I wish it would get it. By there's not enough space in /system for touch wiz and ics. Which is sad because touchwiz is ugly.
Thanks for the response though! Anyone else?

Hey,
My contract is ending in a month or so, and it's time to search for a new phone. To be honest, I'm not interested in "Flag Ships", I just want a bigger phone and something different, I'm a bit bored of Android.
Right now I have an LG Optimus L5. (Phones in Serbia are crazy expensive, e.g. S5 here is 800 USD on contract.)
And then I saw the Nokia Lumia 1320, it came out this year it's affordable, it has a big screen and it looks awesome. So I wanted to see if any of you, have used this phone, and I'd love to hear your input about it. Or if you have a suggestion on a different device, go for it. (Devices I can get are listed in the end)
Note, I'm not looking to play heavy games on it, I have a Nexus 7 for that sort of thing. I need the phone to do 7 things, call & sms, twitter, internet browser, wifi hotspot, play music, and some light games to kill time in transit.
Phones that I was offered for my contract:
Lumia 1320
Lumia 630
LG L80
Samsung Galaxy Core 2
Sony Experia M2
Also, if I accidently posted in the wrong section, Mods please don't delete the thread. I'm kind of new here.
Go for the Galaxy Core 2 mate, it seems the best one from the offered ones

To be honest, I like android and I have an android tablet (Nexus7) which I'm using right now. And I've been using Android since v1.6. But as my post said I'd could use a change. I am aware that WP has only a few good apps in the store, but I don't need anything else than the basic most common apps like Twitter and Deezer. Secondly, I absolutely do not want to spend more money on a better android phone or a so called "flagship".
Indeed the L5 was a disappointment, in every possible way starting from the screen right down to the performance. But is not the reason for my wish to switch.
Probably the biggest issue with Windows Phone 8.1 is the availability of apps and games. But it's not something that concerns me on such a level that I would give up on buying it. I also forgot to mention that I like the build quality of the Lumia device(s).
