[Q] Direct Connect for car stereo - Thunderbolt General

Ok so some of you may know that a usb flash drive will play a lot louder and more clear than using bluetooth to listen to your music in your car. I can use bluetooth to listen to the music on my phone but when i plug it in to use it as a flash drive to listen to the music it says usb device not supported on my sony headunit. Even after i change it to disk drive mode.
Before i attempt to go into the kernel to somehow correct this do any of you know of a fix that would correct this? The reason this is important to me is that i have a sub in my car and a lot of the low frequency notes sound faint over bluetooth compared to playing it over a flash drive.
Ideally i would like to eliminate my flash drive entirely rather than finding songs i like but then having to transfer them to a flash drive to get better play-back.

I also get the USB device error where I never did before on my old incredible. I am running an Alpine headunit. I wonder why its so much softer in volume over Bluetooth than USB.

Personally, I think it is the Bluetooth stack or hardware. My D2, the only thing I miss from that phone, had awesome range(100-200ft) and great SQ over BT. My TB only gets me about a 50ft range with the same sony mw600 bt module and subpar SQ. That is really my only true complaint about the phone. But, I deal because I love the phone overall.

yea that's what i thought...the only workaround i see is fixing this by allowing it to become capable with the headunit's usb device qualifiers somehow...i will work towards this...unless cm7 fixes everything and allows us to use it as a usb device lol...gotta love android

I had an Incredible and it worked fine hooking it up to the USB port on my Kenwood head unit. Once I upgraded to the TB I had a few issues. First the vcast drive that verizon installs on their phones interfere with the head unit reading the phone. It is the first drive that pops up wanting you to install software when you plug it into the computer. With the incredible you were able to access the phone menu and turn off the CD-ROM, but they took that access away on the TB. The only way I have found to get around that stupid drive is to plug in the phone to the USB port on the head unit with USB debugging turned on, wait a few seconds and then turn it off. For some reason this works to help my kenwood recognize the SD card and start playing music.

What is the advantage of this approach, compared to running an audio player on the t-bolt and going from the headphone jack to an aux in?

Better sound quality.
*EDIT* Plus you can control the music features through the head unit ie. skip, random, search, repeat, etc....

It's the bluetooth stack. Specifically the bitpool setting. It's set too low and to date all anyone ever says when I ask about a fix is, "Mine sounds fine".
CM7 should fix this since they use a different bluetooth stack than the stock one and set a higher bitpool.

Wow i really appreciate this man i will def. try this out. Did you have to put it in disk drive mode as well?

Yea the users that say "mine sounds fine" obviously do not have custom audio equipement in their cars. having amps on your speaker in conjunction with a subwoofer allows you to hear a lot more from your music even the imperfections.

Either that or they listen to sonicly simple music... I listen to just about everything and there's a massive difference in sound quality when I listen to something that's simple like hip hop/rap versus heavy metal.

Yes. When you initially plug in the phone select disk drive. Then go to settings and turn on USB debugging. Wait a few seconds to allow the head unit to register the action on the phone and then turn USB debugging off. After this you shouldn't need to mess with anything on the phone.
It is a hassle to do this all the time when I am constantly getting in and out of the car, so I only use the USB feature if I know I am going to be in the car for a while. When I had my incredible I could reconnect and disconnect all day without touching anything on my phone. The only way I have found to disable it completely is if you are rooted you can go in and rename the CD-ROM.iso file, which essentially disables this drive from being accessed and not have to go through all this nonsense. I have yet to root the TB, and this is enough to make me want to root. I guess I am waiting to see if someone finds a better solution other than rooting to get rid of this Verizon nonsense.

I have yet to connect my phone to my car audio system. Will the imperfections have me gnawing away at steering wheel?

Okay, I can appreciate how the DAC in a head unit might be better than the one in a phone, but I'm skeptical that the differences can be heard above the road noise. Plus, most people play lossy mp3's in the car anyway. If the source was lossless, then perhaps the quality would be discernible.
Your latter point, tho, is valid - except in my case where I like to play straight through random albums. I never have liked random songs so much. It totally messes up great conceptual albums like Pink floyd and others. I suppose I'm a purist in my thinking that to play one random song from an album dilutes the band's artistic statement. Of course, pop generally doesn't apply here.

I noticed this as well. so i just decided to use the standard aux cable through the headphone port.
occam's razor.

I can't seem to rename that file even with a root file manager. How do you do it?

Direct connect Works!
I repeat direct connect works! I flashed the new radio (ruu) and then my normal tesla coil 1.1 rom over that. Sat in the car because i was curious and plugged my phone into the headunit's usb port and it worked. Read the sd card and everything. I didn't think that leaked ota would have fixed this but apparently it has?

also I do not have to switch the debugging feature...I just put it in disk drive mode and everything starts playing....I think it even sounds better coming from the tbolt rather than a flash drive; but maybe i'm just partial to my bolt lol

I have used BT audio since I bought my Moto Droid well over a year ago. Yes you can plainly hear the distortion even over road noise. I have a Pioneer headunit with BT headset/audio built in. You would be surprised how easy it is to discern the difference between streaming audio (pandora) and decent quality mp3 (256k). The stock BT stack is prone to artifacts that come across midrange speakers as pops. You end up thinking you blew a speaker. Change source / song and all is well. While I personally can hear a small improvement in the overall quality of audio running CM7 on my old droid vs liquid rom on my TB it isn't much different.
By the way agree on Pink Floyd, comfortably numb has to be one of my favorite songs on a great album.

Car dock audio problem with Froyo 2.2

I just recently popped my phone's cherry and unlocked the bootloader so that I could get Froyo on my AT&T Nexus One. Before the update I had setup my phone to plug into a car dock with a headphone out to auxiliary jack to my car speakers.
The volume was consistently good to my car stereo when unplugged from the dock and when plugged in before the update. Now, immediately after I plug in my phone to the dock with the headphone jack pushing media audio my volume is reduced by 10-20%. I have disabled the dock managing my media audio, put everything to max volume on phone, and it still reduces the audio as soon as I plug it into the dock.
Does anyone else have a similar setup? I realize mine may be unique and I'm on my own. Are there any deeper phone settings to check beyond the standard volume controls?
Yeah I have the same problem. And my phone doesn't pick up my voice with voice commands and auto brightness doesn't work with the phone in the dock. Makes me wanna go back to Eclair...
Still have not resolved this by any means available. Maybe the official ROM will fix this issue. Also my paid apps still have not shown up and I am noticing that when I pick up inbound calls people cannot hear me for a few seconds.
I was hoping by this point in June that the official Froyo for N1 would have been released and there would be a ROM floating around but no such luck!
I've had a similar problem when my phone is docked with the car dock. In-call volume is extremely low, but other types of media are fine (i.e. music, navi, etc). My volume settings are maxed out too. I hope the official Froyo release fixes this problem. I use my car dock on a daily basis.
Looks like frf83 did not fix it. Car dock is useless for me. Seeing comments frome google that indicate they optimized for the cheesy built in speakers and hosed using the headphone jack while docked.
Pandora during the commute keeps me sane, and this ruins it. No froyo for me until this is fixed.
What I've discovered is when I car dock the phone media volume gets set to 12 out of 15 on the headphone jack. The volume setting GUI doesn't show that the volume has changed. Changing the media volume in settings doesn't affect the volume until I undock the phone.
Unfortunately for me that's too much output for my car stereo and music gets pretty distorted.
I downgraded to OTA ERD79 and the volume would remain the same when docked. I upgraded to the latest OTA and the max volume setting returned.
Having the same problem. At least I found this problem is due to Froyo, not my car dock.
Still, wished the USB port is still open while docked so I can bypass the Car Dock's circuits and just use it as a holder only.
Haven't rooted my phone yet, but if the devs can fix the issue on a custom ROM, I will root.
i used to have this set up where my phone was hardwired to the radio and after froyo i have noticed this problem too. I have now gone back to using a bluetooth connection (kensington liquidaux) and it seems to not have the problem.
for those following the other thread regarding the degradation of quality not just the low volume (double sucky). the bluetooth connection seems to not suffer the same fate.

You're referring using Bluetooth vs AUX for the dock and car to communicate? I'm guessing most of us don't have that option on our cars.
Check out the Kensington Liquidaux. It is an aftermarket Bluetooth solution that lets you use any AUX connection.

I have been waiting for a solution and still have not found one. I installed the latest Cynogen V6.0.0-RC1 and when reconfiguring for my dock I got full sound! I was greatly excited! Then... it dropped back down to its normal volume.
I need to figure out a way to disable the phone recognizing the dock entirely since I only use the dock for keeping it stable on my windshield and charging. Anyone have ideas?

I don't think the dots would pass through the charge if the phone completely stops recognizing the dock. This problem didn't start until Froyo, I'm pretty sure there'll be a fix for it.
I have the same problem. So much time has gone by since they released the car dock, first it was fine but after froyo the audio settings could not be saves anymore and the volume got much quieter.
No word from Google... nothing, no answer, no patch.
I'm really pissed, the car dock is almost unusable, except you go to audio settings every time you dock the phone and recheck the settings... :-(
there are already some people who reported the problem on the issue tracker. If you have the same problem please star the issue, but avoid giving "me too" comments... as everyone in the thread gets an email for your +1 comment.

Hi guys,
There's so many add-in tools out in the market that can easily solve those volume level issue. (e.g. "Dock Volume", "Car Dock v2", and many "Locale" or "Tasker" apps) So in my personal option, this is not an issue at all.

You're completely clueless to the issue at hand, please stay away from this thread. Most of those apps have been around before Froyo was even released.

Bluetooth problems

I've been having bluetooth problems with this phone since day 1 & I'm wondering if it's just my phone or if anyone else is having the same experience. No matter what rom or headset I use, I get a craptastic connection. I don't have any problems pairing devices, but I can't get 10 feet away from the phone without it disconnecting and I can't even turn my head without the audio cutting out. It also randomly disconnects for no reason & sometimes won't reconnect until I reboot. This has happened with every rom I've tried & every headset too. I've bought & returned multiple headsets thinking it was just my Blueant, but it happens with every one.
Could I have a faulty unit or does the bluetooth on this phone really suck this bad? I listen to podcasts & music all day long at work so I need to have a decent connection. Opinions needed please.
I think it may be a bad phone.
I have and used the following bluetooth devices:
Plantronics 590A
Jawbone Icon and Era
BlueAnt S4 which I use in the car. And auto connects before I sit down to drive when I have it on.
Sony Ericsson MW600
And Jabra Pro 9470 (office phone setup that connects to my phone via bt)
All connects without a problem. Have you done a titanium backup and perform a factory reset? And after the reset use titanium backup to restore app and data only and leave the system settings alone. You can restore the wifi stuff if you like. From there that's like a fresh install. Hope that works for you.
Yeah I've done many, many wipes & fresh installs & nothing helps. I don't have any problems connecting, I just have problems STAYING connected & listening to audio. It cuts out constantly without me even touching the phone. I've never had such shoddy bluetooth on any other device.
*sigh* Looks like I may be doing an exchange...

Well before leaving the store...if you are going to a brick and mortar to do the exchange, bring the bt headset with you and try it out there and try to replicate the problem with a new phone.
I do not have range problems but I don't usually have my phone more than 5 ft way from me when talking on it via bt.
I have a replacement on the way for bluetooth problems, people complained of a horrid background noise and the range was maybe 8 feet before major static would kick in

My BT sounds like crap! People say it sounds like I'm in a wind tunnel or they can't hear me that well, when they speak to me it cuts in and out.
This is when I connect to my Parrot BT in my truck. I know its not the Parrot system because my HD2 works fine with it.

I have a Dual car stereo & now that I think about it, everyone says they can't hear me even though I installed the mic on the side column & it's no more than a foot from my face at any time. Aargh this is so annoying. Freaking $600 phone & my damn $25 RAZR from Big Lots has better bluetooth.
If I bring it to the store, would they exchange it for me? I ordered it directly from T-Mobile, I didn't get it in a store.

it seems a lot of people have been having issues with the bluetooth sound quality. i have mine paired with a motorola HF850 car kit, which has bluetooth v1.1, or something like that. i wonder if the problem is with backward compatibility, as people seem not to have as many issues with newer devices. would flashing a different radio potentiall help this problem? is it possible to downgrade the bluetooth version with a custom ROM? any other thoughts on ways to address this issue?

[Q] Headset not fucntioning in call mode at all!!

Hi all,
I have successfully rooted and flashed Paranoid Android 2.54 onto my ATT HOX and it is a wonderful ROM for sure. I love the options that it provides and the silky smooth, almost stock interface. The only real issue that I have come across is when I try to use a headset for calls. I am defining a headset as a 3.5mm plug in set of earbuds with mic (Klipsch S4i to be exact). When I listen to music, be it on Pandora, Google Music or Apollo all is well. As soon as I try to use the phone, no sound comes through the earbuds and the mic does not function. In fact you can see a noticable slow down in the dialer app when the headset it even plugged in. If I make a call, then plug in the headset, everything goes silent and the other side can't hear me until I unplug the headset from the phone.
Here is the real kicker though! I have my car stereo modded with an aux 3.5mm plug for listening to music and if I plug the phone into that it works just fine in phone mode! Now, I do realize that the Klipsch is setup as a TRRS and the car aux is just TRS (so when using the car stereo I am effectively bypassing the mic portion of the 3.5mm plug and using the phone's mic), but I cannot for the life of me understand why the headset will not work.
I am hoping that someone can enlighten me or least tell me that they to are experiencing this same issue. I will gladly provide any more info that someone might need to help diagnose the issue, and thanks in advance!
Update so far...
So, up to this point here is what I've found. If I plug in a normal set of earphone (read buds only no mic inline) then I will get sound through them no matter what I am doing (youtube, music or phone). Also, in this configuration anyone I am talking to on the phone can hear me just fine as I am using the phone's mic. However, when I plug in an earbud/mic combo the phone will not function. I get silence and the other side cannot hear me speaking either. It's as if the software has somehow told the headphone jack to act differently than it used to with earbud/mic combos. I am stumped as to why the OS would not allow this type of use when it is so standard. Anyone have any thoughts?
I actually have the same headset and I started having problems with it on the stock rom before I even rooted and flashed a custom one. I honestly just thought it was because they're really made for apple phones. Sometimes I'll just unlplug and plug them back in for them to register. Other than that I haven't seen a fix for them.
P.S. Klipsch control from the play store seemed to make things worse for me

Thanks for the response! Yeah, I think I am going to try another ROM just to see if it will help, but I have the distinct feeling it might be a hardware issue. I just can't understand why this would all the sudden malfunction right after rooting for me. Maybe just a coincidence. I will definitely respond here though if flashing to a new ROM helps...

I've never tried paranoid but King kang(which has paranoid elements) works fine for the most part. nocturnal'd dirty rom, miui, and cm10 have all worked for me tho. I'm currently on the unofficial cm10.1 4.2 and that's working for me as well, except when I have the headset plugged in while booting.
Final Update....And SUCCESS
So, it appears that it was some sort of ROM specific issue. I flashed CleanROM 5.1 to my phone and "wah-lah"! The headset works perfectly in all modes. I am not sure what it was about Paranoid Android 2.54 that would not allow the headset/mic combo to work with the phone, but I am free of it now I guess. I will miss the interface of PA, but boy does CleanROM run FAST!!! I am in awe of the speed and responsivness. I hope the battery life holds up like PA did for me and I also think that the quick settings on CleanROM basically RULE.

Just Bought Tab 2 7.0 - A Few Questions...

Hey... so I bought the SGT2 7, the garnet red, 8gb version, JB 4.1.1, and have a couple questions.
1 - The speaker placement is different than most pics I've seen, and even in a different place than the case that came with it! In most of the pics the speaker is on the front of the tab, at the top of portrait mode next to the camera. On my tab the speakers are on the edge, at the bottom in portrait mode and there's 2 of them at each corner. Also the display model at Costco had the speakers on the bottom edge but they boxes showed it on the top front. What's up with that? Did they change the position of it? Is bottom edge the newer version? Do you think it's better on bottom edge or top front?
2 - The main reason I bought it is to use in my car to replace my car stereo/nav unit. I have a 64gb card in my phone that has a lot of music on it. I would like to be able to control that music using my Tab and stream the music from my Tab to the car via BT. Is that possible to control the music that's on my phone and have it output via the Tab? I'm having issues streaming audio using BT from my phone to car, haven't figured out the issue yet so I'm hoping it will work with the Tab, otherwise I'll use the aux cable. I do want the music output to be from the Tab so the phone can stay in my purse unless I need it on the charger.
If it makes any difference I will have the Tab tethered to my phone, rooted HTC Rezound, so that I can use it for internet radio, navi, etc....
Also, heard about TabletTalk. Found DeskSMS. Any rival apps? Suggestions?
3. I saw an older post that said IR wasn't working on custom ROMs, is it working now? That's the other reason I justified buying this, it is supposed to be my univseral remote for all my audio/video equipment at home, working pretty well except it seems the only "other devices" are Apple TV and Roku. Would like to use it for Xbox too since I use that for streaming from pc atm. Is there a better app?
Not planning on rooting the Tab until I'm sure it's going to suit my needs. Costco gives me 90 days to play with it and decide if I want to keep it, so that's nice.
Thanks for any help.

To send send/receive SMS from tablets, laptops and desktops you could take a look at PopMyPhone. It uses email to bridge between the phone and any email capable device so there are no additional apps required on the tablet. Search the Play store for PopMyPhone
Okay... why would I not get audio from an aux cable out to my aux in on my car?

I'm getting the same issue. I get it literally for like 20 seconds then it cuts out. It's odd

Yeah, I had it the first time I plugged it in then it disappeared. Then I kept unplugging and plugging back in then switched ends of the cable around and still nothing ever again. Came inside and tried my earbuds and had no issues at all.
The main reason I bought it is to use for my car. Ugh. It doesn't make any sense. I can see there may be reasons why bluetooth streaming might be an issue with my phone since it's rooted and running a global leak, but even that works with the cable no problem.

Yea I tried it today for the first time and it played those few seconds then cut out. I was thinking it was the song but no matter what one I selected it kept doing it. I don't have to any issues with my headphones either. Some of the things samsung has done to this tab makes me wonder

A short review of the MW1 with the Xperia Z.

I bought the MW1 last week, and I've had time to play with it, but not to fix the problems I've found, so partly to explain my problems to possible buyers, and partly to get help to fix my problems, I'm writing this review.
First of all, I listened to the headphones that came with the MW1 unit for all of ten minutes. I'm sure they were fine, wonderful and would imbue all music with a magic substance, but I already have a set of Shures, and I don't need them.
Pairing the MW1 with the phone was supposed to be a matter of NFC-touching, but that didn't work. Instead I used the "quick start guide", and it took me about three minutes to set it up once and for all, and it's automatically connected to the phone every time I've switched it on ever since. Basically, you switch it on, and all sound should output through the MW1 instead of from the phone. This is not always true, which I'll come back to.
Sound is fantastic. I can't head any difference between using my Shure through the MW1 and directly to the phone, although I've used my normal music files, which are in AAC ~192kbit VBR, so I'm sure someone with higher standards would find something to complain about. Since 90% of what I listen to is podcasts and audiobooks, we're well past my level already.
Now, the hardware: the unit itself has some pretty obvious faults, which makes it very obvious that this is 1.0 hardware. In fact, I would call it 0.5 hardware. Sony has made some very odd choices, and these are definitely the most important downsides to this unit.
First of all, both the microSD-card and the micro-USB port are inside a lid which looks so much like the lid to a USB-stick that I find myself wondering why they didn't do the obvious thing and simply add a normal USB plug so we could just charge it by sticking it into a computer/USB power adapter, instead of mucking about with a cable. The only thing they would have to move is the microSD-slot, which would fit behind the USB plug just fine.
Second, the power button. If you've seen any reviews about this unit, you'll have heard about the power button. It strikes me that whomever decided that the power button should be of the "hold in for three seconds"-type, be completely impossible to press without half-inch nails, and be located at the WORST POSSIBLE PLACE on the unit, decides ten lashes and a dishonorable discharge from the world of product design.
Now, this is about all there is to say about the actual MW1, but as promised, I'm going to try to talk about how it works with the Xperia Z.
First of all, you must understand that at least 70% of the reason I bought the MW1 in the first place is the lid over the headset-port on the phone. To have to fumble around with my nail to fit into a specific slot out of several completely identical slots around the edges of my phone was COMPLETELY out of the picture. And yes, this solves that problem.
Another problem, however, appears shortly after. I have several applications which play audio, and since I no longer pick up the phone, unlock the screen, (sometimes change application) and THEN press play in the app I want, the phone easily gets confused as to which app is to get the "play" message from the MW1. You'd think perhaps that the Walkman app would be in a default-position just like iTunes is on macs, or Windows Media Player is on Windows, but no - for some reason it just selects completely by random any old running app, and outputs the sound. For me, when pausing Pocketcasts and then pressing play again a few minutes later, it seems to be about 50% chance that Pocketcasts picks up again (which is almost always what I wanted, and ALWAYS what I want to have happen), 25% PowerAmp even though it is never loaded and just installed in case I ever want to play music from my phone at a party or something, and 25% a completely random audio player, including (but certainly not limited to) Smart Audiobook Player, Plex, Winamp, Walkman or ANY other app I have installed on my phone.
So in short: great unit, get it if you can, but if there is ever a version 2.0 of this device and they haven't fixed the power button, please apply for a position with Sony's hardware design group, cause apparently they're useless.
Also, if anyone knows of any way to permanently bind the play button to "whichever app I just paused, you nitwit", let me know.
Also, these units are pretty damn cheap these days, mine was well under 100 USD, and it's well worth it. If you need an extra pair of headphones - fantastic - but even the bluetooth unit itself is worth the price.
Hey, thanks for the short review.
I'm using a Jabra Clipper. Till now it always started the walkman app, and the buttons did what i wanted. but today i had some problems with skipping songs. gotta see if it will reoccure.
the biggest issue i have is the weak signal strength. it's definitly working better than with my old S2, but never the less, the signal is very easy interrupted. Even if the phone is in the pocket of my jeans and i slightly cover it, because my hand is in there too.
I wonder if the MW1 has the same issues.
Not really. I have a Plantronics Voyager something something, and that has horrible distortion issues if I so much as think about putting the phone in the same-side jeans pocket, but the MW1 goes strong even if I'm in another room.
Of course, that could be because the MW1 unit is much larger...
I wonder if this will help: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.harleensahni.android.mbr&hl=no
My Jabra works even in 5m distance, but loses signal as soon as the phone is behind my back.
The MW1 costs twice as much as the clipper.
Nice app, will check it out. Thanks
Hello... I'm thinking in buying the MW1 but I have a question. Currently, I have the JAYS a-JAYS One+ that comes with a microphone.
I think the device of the MW1 has a built in mic so how it would behave if I connect the JAYS to the MW1 since the two have built in microphones? Which one would work to answer calls? The one in the MW1 or the one in the JAYS One+?
Thanks in advance.
The MW1. The microphone on the headphones wouldn't be connected to anything.
Note: I am making an educated guess.
2 Tom Fagerland,
I was wondering : any improvement since firmware update?
Another thing,
About the choice of application while pressing play/pause, have you tried the "Headset Button Controller" ?
I had similar problems with normal wired headset. This app solved my problems. Good luck!

Couldn't smart connect be used in some way?

Wait! Are all here talking about the same product?? MW1 Sony Wireless Headset Pro?
Then i must tell you what i think because i have both Clipper and MW1 and i can tell you whats are you doing wrong
first of all is THE ultimate headset..and if you don't use smart connect..you loose all the power of it..
link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...NvbS5zb255ZXJpY3Nzb24uZXh0cmFzLmxpdmV3YXJlIl0.
Second, it has PERFECT range about 30-40m with out problem! (clipper works fine around 10m with no walls)
Third, connect apps on your device to make the headset works like you want!
Link:https://play.google.com/store/apps/...4uZXh0cmFzLnNtYXJ0d2lyZWxlc3NoZWFkc2V0cHJvIl0.
and something about NFC??? Jesus..read the hardware specifications..NFC no needed
My friend i think you have no idea how powerful is that headset!
IF anyone wants help here i am!
Of course I use SmartConnect
About the buttoncontroller app: Excellent tip, I have bought it now (after checking that it's compatible) and will try it out this week. Thanks for that!
Otherwise, no changes since .253, no. I still use it, though. It's still fantastic, even with having to grab the phone and making adjustments to make Walkan stop playing at the same time as Audible...

About updates: If you have smart connect on ANY android phone..then you can update the Firmware of the headset from the phone (wifi needed). the other way you use MicroSd card (about 300kb .bin file on the root of the MicroSD) or using USB (hold BACK button and plug the usb) and software FLASH the .bin file automatic for you.

I just installed the new one today, I've been sick for about a week. This is the first update I've had since I started using it, so I've not had any changes.
Thanks a lot.
I am thinking of buying the MW1 and have the Xperia Z, so this is perfectly what I needed
Just one question:
Is the XZ compatible with its other features, like the display of the caller name and song title and viewing text messages/emails?

Yes, the Headset displays tracknames, caller names, etc. with my Xperia Z. But I had some trouble at first that the headset was not able to skip tracks when the screen was off and the phone locked with the android pin. After the latest update of my Z and the use of sony smart connect it works fine!

Used the headset for about a week with both headset button controller and the new firmware. No change at all, everything in the first post still stands unfortunately.
Still really like the headset, though, despite all that.
I've got a question about the mp3 player... if I pause it and turn it off... will it remember where I was the next time I turn it on.
I'm thinking of listening to audiobooks on it, but then it's very important that it remembers where it was last time when you power on the device.

What's the difference between this and sbh50? They both have similar specs right? But sbh50 costs less than MW1 and is power efficient. Any advantages of buying MW1 over sbh50?

They're pretty similar... Both have 2 row displays and FM receivers but while the SBH50 has NFC capabilities which is supposed to make pairing easier, the MW1 has a microSD card slot which turns it into a standalone mp3 player as well.
Not sure where you read that the SBH50 is more power efficient? On the sony site they mention 11h for the MW1 but say nothing about the SBH50.
MW1 @ Sony.com
SBH50 @ Sony.com
