[Q] Blackhole Build-your-own-ROM for Thunderbolt: Any interest? - Thunderbolt General

I am posting this to see if any of you thunderbolt users would be interested in another, different idea of a custom rom for this phone.
The Blackhole Build-Your-Own-Rom series is a ROM I created, first for the Samsung Fascinate, which is based on the same idea as the Droidmod custom rom for the Motorola Droid. The premise is that you have a base ROM, which has been stripped of all but the very core programs, and you choose to add back only what you want. This combines the ideas of a clean/debloated ROM, and allows you to choose what versions of various apps you prefer to have. Choose from stock apps, mods, market apps, kernels, etc. and you'll be up and going without having to remove what you don't want from a "One size fits all" ROM.
I do typically provide a standalone flashable version for easy grab and go flashing, and in that case it's a super stripped down stock rom, with a few usability mods included in most cases. I'll be releasing the ROM in both ROM Manager, and the Android Customization Suite. If you have any questions, comments or suggestings anyone can feel free to contact me at [email protected].
If anyone wants more details, or would be interested in donating to help cover the cost of the phone check out the post at androiddoes.net http://goo.gl/r4Yi9

That would be pretty sweet.. new to the android scene and I gotta say theres a lot of roms/kernels, some have great features, then something added/removed I don't like, could of course always add/remove something but this is a good idea. If you are able to add kernels as well, along with sense/senseless would be good. I say do it up.

Sounds great! I will certainly be downloading it. Thanks!

Thank you for your comments guys, keep 'em comming.

yea this would be awesome. i think i saw this mod on my wifes fascinate and heard good things about it.

LOVE IT!!!! very interested in this!!!!

Great, thanks for the positive feedback guys. I just picked up my Tbolt from the VZW store, and as soon as I figure out how to use it I'll get started =)

Yes, I would also love to see a grab, populate and go rom >> GPG ROM <<< thanks.

I would definitely dig this.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App

I'm definitely interested in this

I loved your rom on the fascinate, great to see you start work on the TB

I've had blackhole running when I had my Fascinate and v4.3 currently on my GF's fascinate so I'd love to have it ported over on my TBolt!

I would love to have a Terminal type "toolbox" like ApeX... Nothing would be better than to add what Sense I want like I could with Blur.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App

Definitely interested!

You might recognize my name, but I used to run it on the fascinate. I like it, I don't like themed markets and stuff, and with backhole I can chose what apps I want bundled with it, it just makes it really convenient to me when I can do that all in rom manager.

I remember sonofskywalker3 bringing the Blackhole rom project to the Vibrant and the sheer magnitude of the project on the Fascinate. I'm excited to see the possibility of bringing this to the Thunderbolt.
Sent from my Thunderbolt using Tapatalk

Thanks alot for all your interest guys. I'll have a forum up at Androiddoes.net soon with the details and info for people who would like to beta test. I'll post a link when it's up. And it's good to see some familiar faces in here: ilogik, ignitros, destroyerbmx... what issues did you guys have when switching from Fascinate to Tbolt? I'm having a heck of a time finding the power button =)

Yea it took a while to get used to but apparently the power button sinks over time... Mine used to stick out but now is flush with the case.

I was more talking about it being on top instead of the side
But it does seem pretty low to the case, still works fine tho.

Yes! Definitely interested!

cyanmod team?

Ok seriously...noobnl was our only dev on the cyan team. Is anyone planning on taking it up?
Noobnl can you plz just cme back for a litle get it booting and working ill help!
I had the evo, and noobl your the only reason I switched to the epic. You need to be on the team.
Ok I'm off my soapbox promise
About cyan...could we just replace the anroid.com.phone from the one on the epic? Its the fc u get when u boot up. Id imagine some libs would have to be screwed around with. I'm not that good but am a quick learner so please get at me if you know how to compile and can lead me in the right direction.
Cyan ftw!

Pretty sure noobnl makes the source available. You don't have to be "on the team" to work on it.

I must say Noob, You will be missed. Your andromeda ROM was the first one I tried out on my epic, and I have been eagerly awaiting CM on my phone, but I understand that work/school comes first. I go to college and am an assistant manager at Best Buy Mobile myself >.< the drains on ones time are extensive. But for all the work you've done, thank you!!! Here's hoping you'll leave with Cyanogen Mod Bang!
Good stuff!

WOW, didn't except this at all. Very very very sad to see you go Noobnl. Thank you for all your work! We all owe you tons for your work in the community. Hoping to see you back soon
There's a few other people working on this, too. Noobnl did most of the work and effort, but that doesn't mean that because he won't develop anymore this will be dead.

Whats the big deal about CM6?I found Syndicate barebone to be almost just as light and fast as CM6,with few more tweaks Syndicate can be next CM6,but CM6 is nice and Noobnl will definitely be missed.

well I guess the main differences between the ACS and the CM Team are that the CyanogenMod team is just better!
I jest I jest. I have used both CM6 on other phones and Syndicate on my Epic and I appreciate the work any dev does. Especially considering how barebones the Epic forums will soon be if things keep going the way they have.
However, the main differences with CM6 and Syndicate have less to do with tweaks and more to do with source. CM is built from the ground up off of pure old android. Off of the original sdk from Google. Syndicate is more or less based off of the latest and greatest Samsung firmware. CM6 isn't just customized to be light (although its always been a huge plus) it also comes with things that just aren't possible through any other ROMs. Touch to focus inside the camcorder for one, or swiping away notifications ala webOS style. Also building in a modified version of the way Sammy did the power widgets in the notification shade from SCRATCH. The menus are much more functional in CM than anywhere else.
The only way to really see why people get so excited here whenever the words "CM6" and "Epic4G" are mentioned in the same sentence is to try it out on a supported device yourself. Than you will see that CM6 is established. They have long been around. They don't just modify ROM's, they create. They make the product that I would love to see come stock from Google. CM6 = One of the best experiences you will ever have running android on your phone. Period.
That is all.

If it's anything like the current alpha, it's sure to be a winner.

I had CM6 on MTS3g for about 2 months and loved it,CM6 is pure android and is probably the best rom I used but what im sayin is tha Syndicate is pretty damn close to CM6 in terms of responsiveness and speed, but CM6 got extra settings. So if its compiled from scratch what benefits it has over say Syndicate rom besides having more samsung and sprint sht removed?

This Epic is my first Android phone, however coming from WebOS and palm for many years, the mention of swiping and true mods to behavior is exciting!
So, count me in as looking forward to trying out CM6 with DK17. And thanks to noobnl for finishing up whatever he was working on with it.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. I've had about 12 different phones in the last three years or so including the epic. And I have to say one of the most exciting in terms of modding core behaviors was the palm pre. webOS was an OS that almost anyone could gain dev access to and tinker with. Android is (in my opinion) more powerful, and because of that it takes more know-how to mod it, which is why devs like BTThomas22x and all of the ACS and Noobnl and many many others on here deserve a lot more respect than they are given.
But, again, personally, I have yet to really see anyone take android and mold it the way the CyanogenMod Team has. I bought the epic on day one, mainly for the screen and the hummingbird.. but I almost chose the EVO at the last minute because it already had Cyanogen on it. The wait is long.. but the results will be worth it!
I wish those dumb mf's that make webos would just make large screen phone, webos is really atractive but small screen keeps people from buying it,how those corporate people keep their jobs is beyond me.

LMAOOO I totally agree! Then again, thats part of why palm sunk and was bought up by HP. The hardware didn't attract enough customers, so dev's didn't really support it, so app's not enough apps got made, so even more people stayed away from it. pretty soon a lot of devs left it too. Its a sad thing when an OS launches with only 14 apps. and its even sadder when 3 months later nothing has changed.
And all of this is totally skipping over the fact that Palm chose to launch on a carrier that didn't have the service it needed and didnt get the advertising to survive.
Ah, well. We're getting off topic tho lol Android for the win!

Lol. I agree. People always laugh when I tell them the Pre was on of my favorite phones. All it needs is better hardware, then more people would buy then the developers would develop.

Taking serious suggestions on new ROM

Hello,
This is adamholden85. Most of you know me from Axura. I have formed my new team(first team actually) and I want to start hearing from the community what you guys want your next ROM to have/do. I am not looking for specific apps, that you can do yourself. I am looking for things such as functionality, looks, feel and so on. Please let me know so we can put this together and really put out something amazing for you.
i know you have played with the Armani rom, as have I. give it a shot, it appears to be fully working out of the box with no funky kernels or modems (only thing i had to do was enable 850mhz)

only problem i had was with that stupid bootloader bending me over...left me with a paperweight. oh well, got a replacement the next day

In regards to look, I prefer the current look of 2.5 so I would like to see something along those likes as the base. Other themes can modify visually from there.
Otherwise, Im up for about anything I am just totally sold on that look.
Awesome, this sounds like great news. I was really disappointed to see that you got pushed out of AXURA by a couple of bad apples being louder than those of us who truly appreciate the work you do. I started flashing back on my HTC Fuze with Winmo and your and Hans thread with AXURA was the most user friendly and helpful thread I have ever found on all of XDA. I'm definitely looking forward to this. Anyway, just wanted to let you know there are lots of us out here who are truly grateful, keep up the great work!
Anyway, to stop the love fest and maybe contribute a bit to this my personal preference is to avoid the OC/UV kernels. They just seem to add possible instability and I don't think they add much real world benefit at all.
Also, just a feature that seems to have been lost in Froyo that I liked in 2.1 was the ability to change brightness by swiping across the notification bar. Not sure if that's possible, but I'm suprised that no one else seems to miss that function, haha.
Just my two cents. Can't wait to see what you have for us Adam!
I kind of liked the green icons you had in version 2.5.1 But never did have any luck installing it and getting it to work correctly. Maybe I should of done a clean wipe.
Either way v2.5 works great.
I think some of the red icons like I have seen would be nice, I do miss the 3G icon. Even if it actually is H ?

[ROM] Final Froyo Release for Emerald by CCRoms V2.02 Next Up Gingerbread

Welcome to the final release of Froyo, by the CCRoms team, which means you guessed it, we're switching gears to Gingerbread after this release. With this release we managed to get the Evo/Emerald going as intended(sorry for the wait.) The Galaxy S style pulldown power widget has been implemented in this release as well. Gem settings have been completely re-written as well, to provide a more intuitive and easier to understand interface for everyone, and of course bug fixes abound.
downloads available at: http://www.ccroms.net
Note:
Droid X users, at this point there is nothign more we can find to do to improve battery life. When/If the battery starts to drain fast, gets sluggish, or gets hot, reboot the phone this will put the race condition causing all of these problems back to sleep, unfortunately there is no way to put the process back to sleep once it wakes up and if you kill the process kernel panics and the phone reboots anyway.

Its against the rules to post a rom that link to another site just to download. Would recommend just posting the actual download link and not a link to the site.
Need some screen shots please, have no idea what exactly this is.

From what it looks like, its just stock AOSP.

This is a pretty solid rom. I tried it out back when the first Evo alphas showed up. We just haven't seen this dev much in the evo world.
If it means anything to people, Cyanogen even follows the original dev. He also posted about the dropdown a while back.

To be fair, i never said there's no way of ever getting 4G to work, i just said that there's no way to get it to work on this release of Emerald as I haven't looked into any of the work cyanogen has done with it. As I recall the wimax work they have been doing is still very alpha.
Regardless, I also don't ever recall toting myself as "great" either, so I don't really appreciate the sarcasm. I work hard to try to produce something that I feel is worthwhile and people might enjoy. Nothing more and nothing less.
Just flashed. Running pretty nice. Wish there was a clear vm option though. Im one of the unlucky phantom vm icon recipients. Otherwise very nice.

ok cool... misunderstood
I'm so used to CM it is hard for me to get away, but this is a really nice clean ROM. It was probably the best non-CM AOSP build I have tried, and it doesn't have the little bit of theming that CM has. It lacks some of the special features of CM, but adds some cool ones, like a built in WiiMote app.
Kudos to the gem team.
I remember hearing about this rom awhile back. Doesn't hurt to have options for AOSP roms

i've used the emerald rom and it was very very nice!
I tried the alpha a few weeks ago...not quite ready for daily use, at that time...now, however, the rom looks a lot more polished.
I'm still a big fan of Ultimate Droid for my Evo, but this is another nice option.

Why dose everyone keep coming out with the same ROM's

Most roms that are coming out are always so stockish, y keep making the same thing...
Believe me I understand it takes time and effort to make something deferent but ain't that whole point to start with... Thats the whole hacking idea in general, im not hating on anyone its just the way I see it, it takes to long to make the same crud over and over again and just got some small type of differences which make one stand out, here and there... I believe that if ox and devil and peter something came together something better would just spring up idk you guys tell me what you think?
Its not really about petter and ox even thou ox and devil are the same devs its just about new experiences

I do miss the HTC Dream (g1) days. Where so many devs compiled their own work and even themed their own roms. Each ROM had its own taste

That was before the theme engine days. Themes aren't for everyone, so leaving the rom looking stock gives the enduser the power of personalization.

I kind of like stockish
well from what i been trying i really dont mind a os that is stockish but with some features. I am looking at stability and features. so far the only one i have found this with after trying all the cm7 nightly(114 to 180) I finally switch to superosr and its seems good comes stock but options to custom from the menu. I find that cool.
believe it or not there's this craze going on, about everyone wanting slim, clean, fast roms
you should check out SuperAOS, that one is packed with tons of stuff
but if you really want to be unique, start creating your own ROM, then you can do whatever the heck you want to it, and fully load it with stuff you want

Its not really about petter and ox even thou ox and devil are the same devs its just about new experiences
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App and thanks again for taking a look

CM7 is about as modded as I like a ROM to be but I do miss all the options that were available on the EVO 4G. Sense is fun to play with but I always come back to CM7. I just love some of the simple refinements such as toggle widgets on the status bar and the lock screen.

[Q] Infused or MIUI

i am currently running the infused rom on my infuse 4g and i am noticing a lot of people talking about the MIUI rom. can someone tell me the big differences in the roms that makes them stand out from eachother. which one is more user friendly and such. i have uploaded a screenshot of my homescreen using go launcher ex.
really no replies yet? c-mon people help me out. i have been looking around and found a new rom that looks amazing. i am not a total noob at this stuff i know what i am doing. the new rom that i am looking at is called sensation rom and it looks amazing kudos to the guy that designed it. if you are running it please feel free to fill me in about it too. i am looking to flash a new rom soon and want to know what is the best that i can get for my infuse. here is the link for the sensation rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1325177
again all the help i can get from here would be greatly appreciated.
THANKS
you can wait longer than an hour lol
to get an idea of how the roms are different, you can watch some videos on youtube.
miui is a big change from most roms, it's probably best to just flash and see if you like it. it's not like flashing is permanent

the sense Rom is good, i will leave it at that.
i dont like to hype Roms, cuz they are different for everyone....you may not like the features on one while someone else absolutly loves them. Miui is the MOST customizable rom that is out there. Cm7 is a great Rom as well. i can find good things to say about most roms i have tried on the infuse. and i have Tried them ALL...lol
i say flash away, if your not a Noob - i know your not scared of a brick right.
take the time and see if you like it, if not Flash another and another and for ****s and giggles flash another.
trial and error is the only way to really see if a rom works for you.
It's al about personal opinion man, in my opinion, you should backup your current rom and then flash miui and give it a try. the worst that can happen is that you won't like it and all you have to do is restore from your backup.
Its just two ROMs..!! And you are on Infused. Try out MIUI for a couple days and keep what you liked more.

I've just flashed to MIUI. This is purely my opinion alone.
- It's has a very clean interface with no "crapware" at all. I've to install everything from scratch. That's a plus point anyway.
- And there's multitude of customization that can be done. From themes, to settings, etc.
- But the thing that I don't really like is all my installed app sitting pretty on the home screen.
- I do notice that it's faster than the original infuse interface. Faster browsing too.
- I think it has problems handling more than 4 gmail accounts and Google voice seem to be working erratically.
Apart from that, everything works fine and I'm still figuring it out further.
Think of MIUI as a REALLY REALLY GOOD knock off of iOS.
its CM7 with a skin. lol. basically.

youtube would be a great idea if i werent at work where it is blocked. haha. but thanks for all your help everybody. i may flash MIUI just to try it out. thanks!
Personal preference tbh.
so just to cover my ass a little, if i make a backup of my current rom using rom manager and i dont like MIUI i can always restore from the backup that i made? and when i do decide to get MIUI what and where should i get it from?
MIUI is in the developers section of the infuse forums. It is usually on the first page due to so many people posting on it, it isn't hard to find.
well i did it. i flashed to MIUI and i am going to see if i like it. so far i am not happy. i had my phone to backup all my contacts to google and it didnt and i even moved them to my sim card. so i lost all my contacts. but all in all its going to take some getting used to. will either upload pics at some point or maybe make a video to help people like me who are a lil iffy on rom flashing.
thanks guys for all your help!
I've been running MIUI for 3 weeks now and I LOVE it.....sleek, customizable, fast, faster browsing than stock....but I would recommend trying both to find the one that works for you

MI~INFUSED~UI
All I know is I LOVE Infused GB rom
I tried Serendipity, and HATED it. Flashed Infused back immediately. The swype is outdated, and the look and feel is god-awful. Plus, I refuse to keep a ROM on my phone called "Serendipity" terrible...just awful.
Never tried MiUI
just get Infused. GTG is the man.
Im late on this topic. Just flash both and see which you enjoy more.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997R using xda premium
