Any ideas?
You need to give yourself the custom recovery. Look in the ec10 threads or something, it's pretty simple but I don't remember it all.

No, I found that guide after sageDieu told me "You need to give yourself the custom recovery."
Follow the instructions listed on the forums for installing a custom recovery. Or install a custom rom that includes the recovery needed automatically. And to everybody else, please limit the "Wrong forum" replies. He's been made aware of the policy and we have wonderful moderators that will move the thread if they see fit.

Irrelevant. You are still using instructions from another website. We can't speak for what another forum tells you to do.
Edit:
Oops double post.
Blah blah, ignore them. Just look through the older pages of threads in the dev forum, or maybe the stickies. You have to flash a recovery.bin with Odin, then flash an update.zip that you put on your SD card. Then it will put you in cwm where you can flash a voodoo kernel or something to give yourself permanent recovery.

No. The closest we got was 'install zip from sdcard' appearing but when she used it, it was just a black screen before booting her back to the CWM menu after a few secs/a minute. I'll try it all when she comes to the UK next month.

First off, before you start any of this, you may want to take a backup of the phone in case you do need to go back to stock, if you haven't taken a backup already.
No one else has actually linked to it (since we're not exactly sure what end result you're after), but first off I'd say get a copy of ClockworkMod (CWM) Red, which can be found at This Thread. Grab the TAR file at the bottom of the post.
Next, grab a copy of Odin, the flashing software for Samsung devices. You can grab it at the bottom of the first post in the Files to get your Mesmerize back to stock 2.1 and 2.2.1 thread. Note that if you bork the phone up and need to restore back to stock, this is where you can get Odin images for the phone as well.
Follow the steps in the Guide for getting you phone back to stock, EXCEPT, skip step 3, there will not be a PIT file for flashing CWM Red to your phone. Also, in step 4, it will just be a TAR file, not a TAR.MD5 file. As long as you see a yellow box on the left as shown in the picture in that thread, your phone is connected. If not, get them from the Samsung website here, assuming it's a Mesmerize from US Cellular:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SCH-I500RKAUSC
About mid-way down on the left, click the blue link for "Software", and under the File column on the right, download the first file. Should be a long-named EXE file, and will install Samsung USB drivers to let the phone communicate with the computer.
That should get you Custom Recovery installed, which should allow you to flash ZIP files from the SD card.
I'm kinda giving you what you're after, but since it can be dangerous information, it comes with a caveat... In fairness, we haven't really been given a clear picture of what you're trying to do with the phone so far, just that you're at a point where you can't get "Install zip from sd card" to appear. Be VERY cautious about flashing things to the phone if you haven't read up on it, and read, and read some more. Skipped steps = bricked phones. Worse, I'm cobbling my instructions together from multiple guides, meaning it's even easier to skip a step. Just be warned of the perils, we're not responsible for what you do to your phone, alla that.
Can you give us specifics on what you're trying to do?

Is there a ODIN file for the Rogers captivate froyo 2.2? Is it possible to flash roms without the ODIN file?
Do I just flash the JF6 Stock [email protected] Kernel anyways? I'm kind of stuck right now, this is my first attempt to flash and I've already hit a roadblock can anyone help please.
Read this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905042
I downloaded that file, but couldn't figure out what to do afterwards. I watched the mobile tech videos and it seemed that he was able to just click on the file and open the odin, while when I try to open it says "can't find application to open" after I extract it. Also I don't understand why I have to flash back to stock when I'm already at stock.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I896 using XDA App
First download odin from this thread,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
Open it first and then point it to your rom image that you would like to use, you don't extract the file you have, it's ready to use as downloaded.
Please watch the videos again because you don't understand it yet and you're well on your way to a solid brick.
BTW using CWM with a .zip is easier then Odin IMHO, and can be done completely from your phone, no computer needed, it will also let you know if you have the three button recovery ( very important if something goes wrong ).
Read, read and read some more. Flashing a rom is not hard but it does have to be done correctly. If you want an almost guaranteed result you'll do the homework and learn something. I've only been here a while and rarely do I see a question that hasn't been answered 50 times already, your answers are here, go look for them and you'll pick up other things you will need to know when you decide to be a bit more adventurous with setting your phone up JUST like you want it.
Thanks for the information, it looks like I got lots of work to do.. The link you sent me has a broken Odin link on the other side, do you have a mirror or some sort so I can get the file? Also my final question is that since I have a Rogers Captivate I need to JL1 file not a J16 right? I've looked everywhere but couldn't find an answer to this... Thank you.

do you want to install a custom rom?? like phoenix or cog? if you are already rooted, just install clockwork mod and flash it to phone... then reboot into recovery and choose install zip from sd card... then select 'choose zip from sdcard'. then find the zip of the rom you want to install. I'm a rogers user and I've flashed all the latest roms (currently using andromeda 2.0). Never needed odin.
oh I see thanks, I've tried flashing Cognition via ROM manager with no success. I had Cognition on my SD card, installed and flashed the Clockwork mod and then selected "install ROM from SD card". From their it makes me select my ROM and then after I do it takes me to recovery mode. From here I select Reinstall packages and it says something like "Can't verify file" in red writing and aborts installation. I've always thought that maybe since I skip the whole "flashing ODIN" step that's why it's not working but obviously that's not the case. Do you know why it's not working for me? Thanks for the help.
are you running rogers 2.2 update? it has 3e recovery and will not allow zips to be flashed.
if that's the case, you will need odin3 from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821625
then put a new kernel in the PDA section. I used the tar file listed in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870760
then with your phone powered off, sim card and memory cards out (put back cover on so the battery doesn't fall out) hold 2 volume buttons and plug in usb... should go to download mode. then hit start.
boot up will take a bit while voodoo formats ext4 on your files. after that, you can go into recovery mode and flash zips from sd card

I rooted my Thunderbolt with no problems. But how do I flash Roms and Kernels?
For instance. I was in ROM Manager and i wanted a Kernel. I downloaded it and it said to start in Recovery. I come from a Fascinate. I am use to seeing a green screen. Instead, This phones boots to the white screen. The same screen I saw when rooting and had to push the PG05 file.
It always, only lets me check Boot loader, Where it then updates something and it takes a long time. So it updates and says Reboot. I restart and I am back to freaking stock and wants me to set up my phone for first use. This is really annoying. What am i doing wrong? I now have to root it all over again I feel like a dog chasing his tail.
Edit: Deleting my wrong advice. Oops.

You didn't flash the recovery. Open up ROM Manager and at the top click flash clockwork recovery and follow the prompts. You can't flash anything until you have a recovery.
Nothing fishy. I am honestly in need of help. As for posting in the wrong spot, I apologize. I do not usually post here, Just read.
I re rooted and flashed clockwork. I put a kernel on my sd card. Removed the PG05 file.
I then went back to ROm Manager and selected Reboot to recovery.
It took me to the white screen again. I push BOOTLOADER
And it flashes something quick. I read PG05 as it scrolls fast. But i took that off?
The Zip i placed on the card never tries to read.
So whats wrong? Why doesnt the Clockwork screen look like it did in past?
I am not pulling anything. I really can not figure this out.

OK, it goes without saying that to do rooting and flashing you need to have at least a basic understanding of the English language, a decent IQ and the ability to follow basic instructions.
However, with the CWM mod that's out there for this phone, there are dangers in trying to use for anything other than flashing. IMO, the problem is that those discussions are getting buried in long threads that were originally meant for other Subjects. I feel that CWM needs to have a thread of its on to benefit EVERYONE, especially the newbies. So I am starting it off with this simple instruction:
DO NOT TRY TO USE A ROM MANAGER AT THIS TIME! THE DEVS WILL LET YOU KNOW WHEN YOU CAN USE IT
ALSO; DO NOT USE CWM TO RESTORE AT THIS TIME YOU WILL BE BRICKED
#2 IF YOU WANT TO GET INTO CWM FROM START-UP TO FLASH A ROM - HOLD DOWN THE VOL UP BUTTON + HOME BUTTON + POWER BUTTON, WHEN YOU SEE THE SAMSUNG LOGO, RELEASE THE POWER BUTTON.
TO END THE CONSTANT QUESTIONS ABOUT THE "GO BACK" MENU OPTION: SCROLL COMPLETELY THROUGH ALL MENU OPTIONS TWICE, THE GO BACK OPEN WILL THEN APPEAR
I ask the devs to post info. here even if it has been posted in one of the threads.
Forum Management FTW!
If one of the devs could throw up the file to flash CWM and the instructions, that might be helfpful as well.
Restoring currently has a bug that bootloops a device.
It should be noted that currently there is no go back option either. To enable this scroll through the menu 3x and select an option, go back will now appear.

Not sure an odin restore is helping people.
I have a theory on a way to fix a stock recovery bootloop but that would require a bootlooped device which I'm not willing to do...

On the Fascinate when you flashed CWM, Stock recovery would come up the first boot, then you would flash an update.zip that took you to CWM and you could flash a compatible kernel and you were on your way no more stock recovery. I don't know if something like this could work to get ppl unlooped or not, just throwing it out there.
And ShotgunSam you might as well add don't restore w/ CWM in your big red warning.

Well, I'm already stuck there, if your idea isn't too complex, I can try it out
I have one that was bricked for this reason. If anyone has any ideas I will test them out. I am good with adb shell and have been trying to figure out how to change the bootmode=7 which I think is the sdcard to 6 which I think is the nand. Can't find where the file is in the system because I can't boot. Or a signed update zip that boots Android of the sdcard like the hd2 might work.

Go to the epic 4g forums and in development you'll find a thread that contains an update.zip that will use cwm 3.0.2.x. adb push that update to your sd card or just transfer it. Flash jts cwm compatible kernel through odin then try applying the update.zip.
Just a theory. If cwm boots, you can then flash a rom and that may work.

Thanks OP for this tread. I agree 100%.
1) I think some "bootloopers" have had success entering download mode when their SD card was pulled.
2) Have any brickers/bootloopers tried the JIG method to force download mode?
Google JIG:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSaeaAcJHqw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjDkShT-65Y
http://samsungjigs.blogspot.com/
http://shop.ebay.com/skisky1/m.html
3) Also, I *think* someone who had bootloops was able to clear his data/cache folder somehow/someway. And I *think* he was either able to stop the bootloops or at least get into download mode. But maybe I am thinking of something else here.
Would empty cache/dbdata/movinand.bin files be helpful for Odin? We could rip them out of one of the Fascinate Odin packages to be included with a "Restore to stock" Odin package. Based on the error I've seen of someone that tried to restore, it looks like /data is getting FUBARd and that's causing the problem, but it's not something I want to personally test since my phone is working.
Anyone having issues after a restore, please see if you have adb shell access. If so, please grab a logcat and post it here.

I see Kaik541 has a thread in Dev section for an ODIN version of KF1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14782572&postcount=1
This is for those who want to flash and root from using the tar files.
I personally always remove my external memory and sim card before using odin. It is not needed as people will obviously post and neither is doing master clear. I do these steps just to make sure I eliminate any possible issues that can occur during flashing.
1) Download Firmware from http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-samsungusa.htm
2) Flash back to stock JF6 w/ odin one-click and did a master clear.
3) Flash Gingerbread KF1 using Odin (see image attached)
4) Flash fugu kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1010141 (I attached the zImage-root.tar to post if link does not work)
In the first post look for and select the download link in step 2: (credit to nikademus)
How to use:
1: Flash the stock rom
2: Download the image for Heimdall or for Odin
3: Flash it with either Odin or Heimdall
4: Boot once, it will install root and crash/shutdown (it is preferred to let the phone connected to usb so it does not loop boot)
5: Reflash the original kernel
5) Flash stock kernel (attached kernelKF1.7z) credit to lownox for helping me on that
6) Settings>Applications> enable Unknown Sources (AT&T finally got something right)
7) Install busybox from market
8) ENJOY!

Infuse 4G is rooted. I've been searching and can't find what app/program/script/whatever is used to flash a ROM. When I asked last time, my thread got deleted... Seriously does this community hate newbs or something?

Your thread wasn't deleted. It's was pushed down by other questions thereby moving those thread up and yours down.
For example, if you went to my how to thread a few pages back and posted a question for help or clarification, that will move that thread up to the top, until another new thread pops up. Because of sup many new thread created on the same topic, most regular users annoyed by new thread on the same topic.
Since your already rooted, if you ready through my thread that mtease gave as an answer, there are links to YouTube vids that will guide you.
You should also see a write up where to start if you were on froyo.
Follow the link to gtg's original post. He spelled out very specific instructions on how to flash his ROM by several methods. If you don't want his ROM, use another.
Spend some time looking over the instructions I started...it will start to make sense.
edit: by the way, here was your original post..a page back. It wasn't deleted. Just got pushed further back by other new threads. All you had to do was go to it, and add another question and it would have been bumped up...instead of starting another thread. see?

If the infuse superthread didn't help then maybe Modding your phone isn't for you...stock sounds like what you need

Infuse Android forum needs an intro
All the information is in pages linked from the Superthread, but the Superthread itself only compiles a rather vast collection of resources with no clear sequence except that which is implicit, and actually links to poor explanations sometimes.
One example, with no offense aimed to those who made the effort, is that it has exactly one YouTube link that explains how to install modded recovery, and it's the only one I've found on YouTube---out of several that are on there---that fails to mention changing the permissions of the recovery file, which is totally crucial. (It has to be set to the same set of permissions of the one it replaces.)
The order in which these things have to be done simply is not laid out clearly for newcomers. I would do it, but I'm hardly knowledgeable enough about the phone at this point to do so. My instructions would be dangerous, perhaps, but I do have a set I made for an email to a fellow Infuse user... will post later. They're a dangerous mess, now
You do not need to change the permissions of the recovery file. Wherever you heard that, they were sadly mistaken. You just copy it to system/bin. After renaming the original to something like, recovery.bak, or old, or whatever. Use rom manager to flash to cwm, choose i9000. Boot into cwm, choose reinstall packages, twice. Simple, 5 min, done. You are making this sound hard, when its simple.

If you go to the Infuse Super Thread and read the Heimdall one click link, it's a good start. It will get you to a full working Gingerbread install, which gets you the gingerbread bootloader that many of the gingerbread roms need. From there you can install a kernel (I suggest Entropy's daily driver) which is also linked on the super thread. Then you can install CWM from Rom Manager, and then it's just following the instructions listed on your rom of choice. I used Heimdall to get to stock Gingerbread, which I was quite happy with for a few weeks. I have now worked up to cm7 using the very same steps. First time installing a rom. Yes I bricked my phone about 4 times, but each time I just reinstalled Gingerbread using Heimdall and started over.

I could not get into the modded 3e recovery without changing the permissions.
The steps I did:
1) Restored to stock using GTG's Unbrick.
2) Wiped data and cache in 3e recovery.
3) Flashed stock UCKH1 with Odin.
4) Rooted.
5) Copied the modded recovery file into the /system/bin folder after renaming the original to recovery.bak.
6) Shutdown.
7) Attempt to get into 3e Recovery. It sat there at the Samsung boot screen.
It still boots normally after pulling the battery. I tried this several times and it simply will not go into the modded 3e Recovery until I changed the file's permissions.
You did it wrong.... read how to root again....

Come to think of it... I didn't install ROM Manager... I already had the update.zip file for CWM on my internal SD storage. Does ROM Manager automatically change the recovery file's permissions?
BTW: I know how to root my phone and I already have the modded 3e recovery and I can get into CWM. I was trying to do all this without changing the recovery file permissions.
Here's the video created by gtg465x stating permissions need to be changed 1:40 into the video.

Look apparently you don't know how tobrrot your phone because you have this thread... yes you need rom manager... flash to cwm with rommanager after you replace recovery, boot into recovery, reinstall packages, twice, done. Or flash the community kernel via Odin and you'll have cwm that way...

LOL.... This wasn't even my thread.. I assure you I'm rooted and I am using CWM as I'm able to use Titanium Backup and other root required apps as well as make nandroid backups using CWM.
You asked where the whole notion of changing the recovery file permissions came from and I provided it.
To the OP: If you get stuck at the white Samsung bootup screen after copying the recovery file into system/bin try changing permissions on the modded recovery file as shown in the video posted above.
*** The OP hasn't even been back since his/her original post... probably got scared away.
