Z4root - Captivate General

I am attempting to root my sisters captivate and install cm7. How do I get z4root installed onto the phone.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App

At the risk of sounding like an ass, if you can't root the phone you sure dont need to try flashing cm7. It's a VERY difficult, multi step process where one tinymistake will soft brick your phone.

You don't need to root first in order to flash different roms.
Also, are you sure your sister wants cm7? She'll lose divx playback, 720p, hardware noise cancellation, and some other samsung specific things..

You don't sound like an ass I get that part. I am just unfamiliar with how to get it rooted easily I would've been doing it at her place away from my computer and was hoping there was a easy one click way to root her phone. I am familiar enough with android to flash the rom. Just not with the stupid att no side loafing apps policy

Thank you for that ill make sure she knows that before I proceed. Buy she barely uses the phone for much more than calling texting and Facebook

If that's the case, I'd probably just stick to one of the 2.2 roms in the dev section here. Calls will sound better with Cog 4.3, simply because of the hardware noise cancellation. They also include the Swype keyboard by default, which CM7 does not.

Performance Issues

My Captivated is rooted and Im having a lot of performance issues. I unloaded some apps and its still having problems. The biggest issues is delayed response. This happen from messaging, to suing the touchscscrreen./----Im going to leave this typo because it happens of the screen freezing--/ . This happens way to frequently. Please tell me I can fix this myself, I don't want to send this off for a new one. I hate that process.

Backup your apps with TITANIUM BACKUP and flash back to stock. Then I would install the sre.

you can follow all the steps to root your phone and reset and blablabla...
or you can wait for the software fix, which nobody knows when to come or nobody can guarantee to work.
or you can wait for 2.2, which is supposed to be faster but you never know.
or you can exchange for another phone and probably have the same problem.

I wouldn't mind playing the waiting game if just a couple of bugs. But what's a smart phone if it doesn't can't handled being used. I figured it was something I did cause the phone didn't always freeze like this. Is this the lag people are talking about?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Do a reset. However don't use Titanium Backup to restore system data. It will funk stuff up a lot of the time.

I had the same issues, first get rid off any task killer app you have. Second download the One Click Lag Fix app. These steps increased my phones speed drastically. You can also use a program called Autostarts to control which apps load at boot. To do the last to tips, I believe your phone had to be rooted.

Did you install Auto Killer?
Back before this nice app we had to use a script at boot to change the settings this app now does. Y'all got in on Android when it was getting easy to do everything. I had to root by cmd prompt and use a list of commands now we have one click rooters. I am kinda jealous.

BTW what are the lag issues everyone talks about? My best friend has the Captivate which is why I am on the forums. I am trying to stay up to date with his phone. I have the Evo.

You definitely don't need an app killer. Eclair is set up to kill apps when memory is needed. I find things to be buggy when I use an app killer. Use launcher pro. Much smoother than touch whiz. Root with SRE. When all the att crap is gone the phone functions like it should have out of the box even if you disable the OC. Lagfix is optional but doing all these things really makes the phone fly

PSFreedom

Just a FYI for anyone interested, I am taking a crack at porting psfreedom to the epic4g. Not sure who would be interested in trying to use this.

EDIT 11/02/2010
Here is a psfreedom.ko if anyone wants to try it, I had to setup the Epic to load it on startup (via RC script) on DI18 stock, but using Epic Experience 1.2.04 with MixUp DI18 Voodoo I was able to load it after startup.
Good luck.
Fortunately it isn't my first song and dance with linux kernel modules, so at least that is going for the effort.

good luck will be looking forward to this if u get it working
Well, I have it compiling, which is definitely a good sign, just have to fight an insmod problem and making sure I don't lock myself out of my phone in the process. I will let everyone know how the process goes from here.
Will throw a donation your way if you can get this running. Was gonna order the key but I would rather just have my phone compatible.

I am very interested in this! I was about to use my sisters MT3G to try it out, but my lovely roommate updated my PS3 today to 3.42, do you know if they posted a updated fix for PSFreedom yet?
Anyways good luck and can't wait.
i would certainly love this
Good luck with that man. Im no dev but I'd definately help test this. Maybe you can ask for help from the guy who originally ported it to android if you need any. Thanks again for your efforts
hell yea i will donate for sure if you get it working
I would also donate if it could be done by this weekend.

:O
Epic 4G = Samsung Vibrant for T-Mobile ?
the hardware drivers wouldnt be all that different but im sure would still need a revision of sorts. i cant imagine they used different usb chips in the different versions.
just to clarify to everyone when this works (not if ) the very concept of it means you will lose all usb functions aka mass storage (access to your sdcard over usb), adb tethering and anything but charging. if its possible to make it into a script so that whatever file may be needed can make a backup and rename the original and then another script to make it revert then you could flip flop
However according to my knowledge you only have to run the exploit once to get backup manager on your ps3. Therefore couldn't we just run this script load up the exloit then flash back to stock and be done with it. Its not like you have to keep the exploit on your phone to use backup manager...

Shoot221,
Can you PM me? I need some info on the vibrant to build that in parallel.
Bubby323,
Wrong. You need it attached on each startup of the PS3. I will make this as user friendly as possible.

I am not real comfortable with any of the process's yet. I tried one click and was never able to move off of the Desire (no sound) ROM, so I returned the phone and go another one. I come from a Captivate that I Rooted hundreds of times, with no incident. So hopefuly a more automated version will come out to Root the Inspire

If you're holding out for a root method for the Inspire that is as true "one-click" as the captivate, you'll be waiting indefinitely.
There are fundamental differences between the two phones in terms of root-ability.
Seriously, the inspire is completely rootable. Your inspire is no less rootable than mine was or any others who have had success.
If the root process fails for you, it is because you overlooked something. Bubbys tool, along with Zonderion's video, produced a rooted phone, with fully functioning sound, for me, and many others.
Having TiBU functioning and able to remove bloat was the primary reason I wanted to root. You will never truly and completely be free of the bloat unless you root.
A properly-made gold card is CRITICAL (format FAT32, allocation size = 32KB).
Having JUST the drivers, without HTCSync installed, "safely removing hardware" (unmounting) the card before switching the USB mode, and basically giving it the chance to do its work, even if it seems like its taking too long, are all things (among others) that need to happen in order for the process to properly complete.
Zonderion's video, if you replicate the actions you see him doing EXACTLY, even down to the way he formats the SD card, will work for you, assuming you starting from a fresh phone.
The only thing I did different than him was use a 4gb card instead of an 8gb card.

This has all been covered in the actual CM thread, all of our ROM's are stable they just have some missing features (AOSP built ones anyway)
MMS seems to be an issue right now, i have tried apns backup and reinstall and no luck. The other issue i have noticed is the cameras highest res is 3mp, but is fully functional. I also got 2694 on quadrant, if you have never used cyanogenmod i highly recommend it. Coming from a desire this is a bit of a step backwards, but no other rom will do. That being said, it's highly customizeable compared to other roms i have tried.
So the only thing not working is MMS?

Any tips for using wireless tethering on this ROM? I couldn't find it in Settings so I'm using an app but it unusably slow. Has the stock menu option been removed? I don't see USB tethering either.
Also, is there a way to get Swype back? Maybe this method? http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-841603.html

Thanks, I'll check it out. I went back to super clean for the time being, as I also couldn't find any way to access my phone from my windows pc with cyanogenmod - I guess you need a separate app for that too? I will have to do some more research before using that rom. Can't wait, it is by far the easiest on the eyes.

thats the best way to save contacts cause then it auto syncs back to the phone on any rom

That's a subjective question. If you have good reading comprehension. It's safest and easiest to do it the manual way in my opinion.

Anyone knows if tbolt is going to get true one click root app?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
no it's not going to
I've tried the auto root 3 times and it never worked for me, manually is better in my opinion make sure you check your md5 sums I almost ****ed myself by not doing that before hand. Good luck!
Both methods are fine. However, I strongly recommend the manual method. The problem with auto rooters and one-click rooters is now everyone will use it and more people will end up with bricks on there hands if they are not careful. The manual method is reserved for people who took the time to learn and are less likely to make a mistake.
The manual method is easy, and by far the safest. You get to control each step, and you know EXACTLY what you have done in the event that something does go wrong. I have rooted two TBs, a co-worker rooted his GF's TB by himself (he has never rooted before) using the manual method and everything was fine.
Both methods are not fine. The one click/auto root cause problems. How do I know? Because users come to our chat daily asking for help, or even trying to demand we fix their phones when the auto rooters leave them on 1.03.605.x or set off the security warning. At that point, we don't know where the auto rooter left you hanging, and the user doesn't know how to setup/use adb either.
Use the manual method.
I'm gonna have to agree with jcase.sure some people used the auto method and it worked fine but do you really want to take the risk and have a $600 paper weight? Either way you have to read and follow directions, take the extra time to learn about the process of rooting tbolt its not very hard and in the end you will be glad you did it manually.

i am HIGHLY against autoroot. I'm 100% positive manual root is better.
funny thing is my roommate who is an ICS major has been failing at autorooting his Atrix. I'm sure he tried more than 30 times by now. He tried a factory reset and even a flash. No go. I bet a manual root will solve his problem.
Don't be lazy. Are you really willing to risk your bolt on a process you cant see and have zero control of?I know I'm not. I've rooted 3 bolts using jcase/teamandirc's method and worked everytime.
