Hi, I´m new here and I need a little bit help...
I want to flash my HTC Wizard with a good working WM6 ROM, but I don´t know which one...
Which one is the newest and best working ROM, I need a suggestion.
VoIP is very important for me.
Please give me a hint...
You will have to do the same thing the rest of us did, test them out. Each chef is diffrent and will include diffrent things in thier rom to fit THIER needs. Sometimes you will find one that will fit yours, sometimes you wont. Its a hit of miss type of thing.

As NTS said, then you need to just go out and start flashing roms and find what works for you.
FWIW: I know people that are using VoIP on my roms with no problems. I've never used it so I can't assist there, but there are threads about running and setting up VoiP on WM6 and all around here. Google can be your friend...

Well said my friend.
I was wondering the same thing as lukesky333... and I've been downloading ROMS left and right so i can start testing them out. I was just wondering if there is a place on the site that lists what is and isnt included in the different ROMs, for comparisons sake?

The first post of each rom lists what is in them (or what has been removed usually). There have been many suggestions of someone maintaining a list like this (in a forum thread or on the wiki) but nobody has ever done it (and as a cook, I honestly don't care to maintain something like that myself. Sorry). To me, its not that hard to look at the first post of each rom and look and see whats in it, what its based off of, etc. Sure to a noob, this is a daunting chore with the terminology and stuff, but I honestly don't know how to make it easier.
If someone creates some type of comparison chart on the Wiki, I'd be willing to attempt to update my own rom info on it, but I have no interest in another project that I'd have to maintain...
And I'm sure if that is done, people will then complain about the way its formatted, or its not easy enough to read, or why is it in the wiki and not the forum (downside if its in the forum is only the original author can maintain it, or a mod), yada, yada, yada....
Just look how many roms have exploded onto this forum with all of the kitchens now available... I think this chart may be HUGE (and people will all start to see there isn't a lot of difference between many of these roms, as they are just personal mixings of existing roms with almost no changes other than included apps).

This is a comment from a noob - so take it with a pinch of salt. When I considered flashing a new ROM, I could see quite a few alternatives - XDAr2, NBD, SeeNoEvil, mattk_r's etc. Almost all come from two main build sources - 318 and 1413. (See the thread on difference between the builds.) After cycling through a few ROMs, and basically liking all of them, I picked one ROM. I am planning to stick with this ROM for 2 reasons:
1. I realized that once you have a decent ROM, you can always add on the other applications. Even if there is no cab version for an application, you can build one easily.
2. With a good registry editor, you can tweak the registry to your liking - e.g GPRS disconnect button, no SMS delivery notification, etc.
Almost all the available ROMs are basically a collection of apps (point 1 above) and registry tweaks (point 2 above). I settled on mattk_r's ROM of 318 with touchflo. The main reason was that it comes with a kitchen and gives quite a good choice of apps and registry settings that you can include.
So, there is no simple answer to the question asked. But the ROMs here give a good start.
BTW, there is a new ROM based on 1437 build. Now I am tempted!

Are there any sites that explain in detail how to build an Andriod ROM, I've googled it, but nothing of any relavence. I want to learn how to build one.
interesting as well. Waiting some BIG guy to give a guide.
It would be nice, Maybe like a complete kitchen ala WM.
Former WinMo ROM builder (Touch Pro) and looking for the same info.
snag JF's 1.51 build environment from here:
http://jf.andblogs.net/2009/05/24/jfv151-images-are-out/
that will at least point you in the right direction.
you can always modify an existing update.zip and resign it using the testsign.jar tool
i'd love to see a step by step guide as well
A guide would be realy helpful, and greatly appreciated! Been experimenting on my own, but I'd love to see a Ion build enviornment.
Wow, so it looks like we are all making an official request for someone to put together a "Roms for Dummies" or similar..... Who's got the pull to make this happen, lol
there's cyanogenized rogers, a very good sample to start with
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=524160
I'm a Herald cook, and I would also love to learn this.
Making ROMs for WM devices is so limited, I'm looking forward to this.
This would be awesome... I know just enough to be dangerous... but would rather have some sort of guide to get things going right.
I would have to agree with everyone above me, having some sort of step-by-step guide with a list of necessary tools would be very handy to have. Especially for someone who's just starting out and no idea what certain things do.
I would appreciate some kind of basic tutorial in this direction, too.
I have just been a little confused about how to resign an update.zip if I want to change any files inside of it, and then rezip.
Well.... Lets see if we can't get a Mod to come up with a cool idea of appointing someone who knows what they are doing (i.e. NOT ME), or themselves to collect everyone's pieces, and put them all together into a newb friendly version, and lead up to an advanced version. Talk about really opening the door to new developers. Eh? Whatya think?
I would love to learn too

Ive been on windows for years and its all i know, but i do want to learn how to work on ROM's. I''ve heard that Ubuntu is the easiest to learn coming from a windows environment, please steer me in the right direction if im wrong. I guess illl have to dual boot my laptop to night.
So why isn't anyone producing nexus themes?
There's some great devs out there but no themes?

Look through the sub-fourm that you just posted this thread in.
1. It is time consuming.
2. Most images need to be recreated.
3. People are still too busy playing with the phone/waiting for stable ROMs.

I perfectly understand it's a lot of work. I just was surprised that there weren't more of them. I definitely didn't mean it in a derogative way. I truly give the devs a standing ovation for their hard work and efforts. I guess it's me being impatient as always! Am used to the g1 forums being crammed with new stuff. My apologies if I offended anyone.

Also, I think most of the main themers with the G1 don't have a nexus yet lol. I know one of them just got a nexus, so I need to harass him some more so he starts working on his theme.
I just purchase Nexus One just before few days.Well my experience is positive.Recently I am using some themes which I have downloaded from few sites of themes, but I am not much satisfied from that so I am surely trying to make some new themes in a short period of time.As I complete that I will surely share that here.Till then please keep in touch...

why not make one yourself? Theming in the case of resigning and rezipping is easy. Editing the pngs is probably next hardest (esp. when you see what guys like Sir_Mez and Manup456 are able to do- now that is skill) and then you just learn how to fix 9patch drawables- easily done if you spend a bit of time reading. All the information is in the android theming section.
At the moment there is no theme template for cyanogen which is one reaosn why no themes- personally i just have a themed framework-res.apk, services.jar, Launcher2.apk, Browser.apk and vending.apk and each new rom i just still the themed images in to the apk files and push them across via adb- not for general consumption. And unless you barrack for Geelong Football club my theme is no good for you
There are plenty of themes for the Nexus One, just many of them arent found on this site.
Here is mine: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=625306
As already said, there are quite a few out there. Some are flashable, some are morphs.
I think that the apps and themes parts of this forum should be broken apart into two uniques so it is easier from a user standpoint
As I've eben working on my own theme, I've asked a lot of questions , and (obviously) learned a ton along the way. I've been keeping a log of a lot of it, but, I was wondering if you would all be interested in an "end-all, be-all" guide to theming from scratch? With things like important file locations, tutorials on .9 pngs, decompiling and editing xml, etc. etc.? Maybe I'd even PDF it and have screenshots and everything.
Just something I've thought of, but, it's REALLY not worth it if people aren't interested, bc it'd be time-consuming.
I would definitely be interested. I have been looking for something for awhile now. I have found bits and pieces haven't been able to put it all together and figure it out. I have an app I have been trying to theme to match the clock I am using and cannot get it right. I don't know what I am doing wrong.
This is what happens when I try to theme SwitchPro widget.

Yes, I don't have time to figure it out on my own like you did. So that would be pretty fly.
Hey dmoses, go ahead and attach that .9 png you did for the background of switchpro, and I'll fix it for you real quick.
uhm that would be awesome ive tried changing a bunch of things on my phone on to find out that maybe half ever work and not knowing why lol
I'd love to see this too. I was spoiled with theming for the Palm Pre & would love to get into theming for Android now.
I am always open to answering questions about theming. If I can anyway.
Personally, I learned a lot of my android business from SDX-Developers. There a bunch of us brainstormed and basically relearned android. We pulled a lot of info from XDA yes. And for that I am greatful. However, since so much had to be relearned, a lot of info is documented in the forum. And most devs are still active so getting a response to a question, or at least someone to bounce ideas off of, is pretty easy. Android across the board is very similar no matter what device.
I would first recommend google search being that there are a ton more forums beyond xda with information. SDX is where I usually go for more technical questions or discussion, but then again it is where all the Moment users went when XDA shunned us.
Documentation is key if you want to remain open source so the mods can be used or altered for future use.
+1 Great idea

you need a deodexed rom first or else it wont boot. Also nandroid backups arent working properly so its risky to try and flash anything right meow because theres also no stock update.zip
heres a decompiled framework-res.apk that i just rared (just a bunch of folders) that i added a battery 1% mod to so you can get a headstart with a piece of it. If you google or look around the epic xda forum you can see themeing guides... You can theme the battery images too and such if you want....
the apk i made might even work on non deodexed roms since it does on the epic, just dont want to send it out to anyone because of the lack of recovery options (you could always just adb push your original framework-res.apk over... though...most people dont know how to do that and i dont even have a sidekick to test on. if you want the apk let me know )

Hey so I am very serious about developing for the SK4G.
What is the best development platform? I've got a MBP and a Desktop capable of dual booting windows & linux and another dedicated Linux laptop.
Tools? I've got years of Photoshop, and hex editing experience. I'm sure I can learn how to decompile code quickly. Compiling from source is my ***** yadda yadda yadda

I still have a lot to learn too I'm not a real dev.
There's numerous tools available for each platform... apk manager, signapk for window. You need linux for anything with kernels and making odin tars I'm dual booting right now though I'm not really too efficient in linux yet. I made a deodexed rom out of the stock rom too but it needs a few fixes
Perhaps we could make a newbie dev team for the sk4g there's a few people interested in other threads too. I don't have a sk4g I'm just interested because there's no devs yet and its similar to my epic4g in the system dump. My gf has one though she doesn't want to root it

If you just want a theme, you can easily grab wallpaper and icons from the Hiptop SDK's built in simulator. Unfortunately, the version of the simulator that fully supported audio was never released to developers outside of the Danger offices.
You could also get a screen grab directly from the device with the htconsole.
