How to shut down a (semi)bricked Xoom - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have had a hard day trying to recover my Xoom. No success. My biggest problem for now is:
How do I shut it down. The screen is on showing the M bootlogo. The powerbutton doesn't do it. From what I understand so are the tablet "off" because the charging light goes on when I connect the charger. I read in a thread somewhere that the light doesn't go on if the tablet is on.
So how do I shut down a tablet that's not on?
I'm afraid that the screen will be damaged if it has the same picture on it untill the battery is drained. Perhaps that's not the case nowadays, but I don't know.
Anyone that do know?

Have u tried just hold power volume up?

Yes. That only reboots to logoscreen and Starting RSDmode 3.

Can't just shut it down. Gotta boot into fastboot and flash a boot.img, then power it off. Obnoxious I know.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App

Hold volume up and power at the same time. See if that works!
Oops just saw the 2nd post.

Yup, follow post #2 to shut it down. But make sure you let go of both buttons as soon as the screen turns off. Also, if you wanna unbrick your semi bricked xoom, use a windows XP machine (win 7 64bit just gives me too many problems). You can use the one click root solution to make it easier for you. To get it to fastboot mode (to restore the boot.I mg and system.I mg files), you have to hold power+volume up button, and as soon as the screen turns on, let go of both buttons and press volume down immediately.

u may need to download your devices partition images and reflash them in fastboot

Thank you. I'm sorry but that didn't help. I can't boot into fastboot mode. When I follow your advice I boot into the logo screen without any text in the upper left corner. Then I give the "fastboot flash boot boot.img"-command from CMD. It just sits there <waiting for device>. I think I have to send it back to Best Buy and let them repair it. It was nice for 5 hours though. My personal best in bricking.

I got stuck at that screen once and shut it down by holding the power button for a very long time. At least 30 second, if not more. Perhaps that'll work for you.

OK, try this.. Reboot the device by pressing on the power and volume up key. Hold both keys til it reboots and you see the motorola logo. As soon as you see the motorola logo, let go of the power and volume up key. Press on the volume down button once and it would then give you the choice of booting Android (recovery), press the volume down again for the RSD mode, press on the volume again and it will then give you the choice of fastboot mode. Pressing the volume up key will select the current boot mode displayed... See if that works..

No. I can't get into any recovery. It boot into RSD mode 3 or no text in upper left corner. In that mode I can't use fastboot or adb. What can I do with RSD mode 3? Can I create the file that can be flashed with RSD Lite from a wifi xoom dump in the development forum?

Stuck at Motorola logo and RSD mode 3

I'm new to Xoom but gave unlocking and rooting a go. That was todays mistake! I flashed a 3g version of boot.img. Then I tried to flash back to stock img-file. Found out that it also was a 3g img-file. Flashed once more. Now it was a wifi-only boot.img. Now I'm stuck at the Motorola Dual Core logo with Starting RSD mode 3 written in top left corner. I can't shut this thing off or anything else but rebooting back to same screen. I really don't know what to do. I bought it yesterday from a man that bought it in the US a week ago so I can't go to the shop and I don't think there are any shop that can flash it for me because it's not available here in Sweden yet. Please help. I have RSD Lite installed and the correct drivers for the Xoom installed. I'm used to ADB but it can't find the device and fastboot doesn't see it either.
Edit. I can't go into fastboot mode.
Grab the wifi's boot.img off of here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1017398
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=973355
This might be helpful. Not sure.
Don't worry you are in good company, even BRD had the same problem. Here's how he fixed it:
While I was in "RSD Mode 3" I did
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Even though there was no response from the device, I pressed Vol Down + power until the screen went black. I then quickly pressed and held Vol Up + power. The device then went into the bootloader, received the queued command from fastboot, and flashed the boot.img. Finally, I did
Code:
fastboot reboot
and was back in the game.
Guys, I think the moral of the story is to slow down and be careful with fastboot. You can bet i'll be a little more careful

Edit: Same advice as linked above by milehighclubAV8R
That doesn't do it. Propably it's some stupid misstake from me but I cannot do this because of " I pressed Vol Down + power until the screen went black". It wont get black. When I press Power + Vol down nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong. I have tried holding the buttons for about 30 seconds and nothing happens.
Did you just press the buttons or did you also enter the fastboot code as suggested?
First cmd command then pressing the buttons. When I reboot using power + vol up it starts into RSD mode 3. When rebooting it with power + vol up then vol down when black it starts into the logo screen without any text in the upper left corner. Can't even shut it down with long press on power button
Can I pull the battery? On my Galaxy S that's the way out if I get in a boot loop or need to redo a failed flash.
Not AFAIK, the unit is sealed and can't access the battery to pull it.
Perhaps ask in this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=973355, there may be more technical people seeing it there than in the general section.
OK. I will do that. Thank you for trying to help.
Press power+volume up. Hold it til it restarts. Let go of both buttons once you see the motorola logo then just press volume down once, and you should be then able to cycle through 3 different modes. Press volume down to cycle to different modes, volume up to select. Hope that helps.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
Sorry but I can't cycle through anything. There are two modes. Either "Starting RSD mode 3" or nothing and RSDLite can't communicate with it so I belive that my xoom is dead. Sending it in for repair tomorrow. I'm giving up.
mine is stuck in the rsd mode 2. if i push and power and the up it will boot cycle if i the down button it says it is the the flashboot protocol mode, but i cannot get it to respond from the cmd window. my computer doesnt think its connected. i have the correct mot drivers. any help or is it bricked
Some people have been getting lucky with ADB commands however others have not been so luck. I myself am in the others category with one of my XOOMS.
Sucks, but some people have been able to get back. I however have not been so lucky with one of the WiFi XOOM's I have and did this purposely to see if maybe something can be done with it. Looks like we have to wait for all the files to be released......
Any day now Moto, util then people will continue to send these devices in and con the stores . For this, I applaud them.
This might work or it might not.
I had a bricked xoom too. no matter what fastboot i entered it wouldnt recognise it. all it would say is "waiting for device"
This is what i did.
Turn the xoom off
Do not connect you USB cable yet
Fastboot reboot-bootloader
It should say "waiting for devices"
Now plug your xoom
Turn on the xoom.
When you see the Motorola logo press volume down till you see "fastboot protocol"
Press volume up.
It recognise my xoom that way
couldnt turn mine off. let the battery run down. plugged it into power booted it up. no help. bricked

I have to admit, I'm one of them. Sure is a nice way to tell Moto to hurry the F up. I can't say I felt great about it but I wasn't about to lose $600 either.

shipped mine back to the factory today. not sure what they can do to it. is there such a thing as a force flash or will they have to replace the firmare chip to make it work? unstable combo tegra and honeycomb, aint messin with mine anymore.
i just recovered mine from this. i flashed recovery with clockwork mod:
at the rsd 3 screen with the usb attached
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
held the volume down while pressing the power off on until fastboot started flashing the recovery
fastboot reboot
xoom started in clockwork mod, did a restart and it worked
****This happened after attempting to load recovery from rom manager without flashing new recovery image.***
Did you happen to mention in your explanation about what went wrong with your xoom anything about unlocking or relocking?

Volume button fault - Any other ways to go to bootloader?

Hello all,
my sensation's volume rocker is faulty. By pressing volume down and power on, it will not boot into boot loader thus cannot enter recovery.
I know i can use software to boot into it boot loader but what if I am getting bootloops and unable to boot into rom?
Any ADB commands to make the phone boot into bootloader straight?
I am planning to flash the factory RUU and go claim my warranty after i get my Galaxy nexus..

Possibly not unless your timing is amazing!
Are you stuck in bootloops now or is this hypothetical?
Please, tell if your volumne rocker is so broken that it cant even turn up/turn down volumne during normal use of phone?
If it's ok, thet I suggest method of booting into recovery which I use (and i had problems to boot before - thought it's vol. rocker):
1. press volume down button and hold it!
2. press power button for 2-3 seconds and then release, still holding the volumne down
3. phone boots into recovery after few seconds.
Hope it might help you.

Implying he can't control volume in a bootloop, I seriously hope this guy uses 4EXT touch, or else he needs to replace the rocker.

I understood that he can't enter recovery due to some volume button fault. When you stuck in bootloop only thing you can do is pull out the battery, no keys/buttons are usable - tested myself :/

not really hypothetical.. in fact i experienced it earlier..
my volume up/down seems to have a mind of his own and at times i will enter "safe mode"
thereafter it will auto reboot unless i am quick enough to do a factory wipe under settings... it will still boot into safe mode but wont auto reboot.
so after knocking a few times on the volume rocker, i am able to boot into normal mode but the volume rocker isnt working. Pressing it once, will cause to decrease the volume and switch to silent mode.

I dunno if HTC singapore will honor the warranty cause this is a hardware defect and nothing to do with any rom or unlock..
Even in bootloader mode, press up will cause it to go down or at times up. pressing down may or may not respond.

If you have CWM recovery installed (im not sure about other recoverys), you can connect your phone to your computer when it's off and you will have access to a limited adb provided by CWM. You can then use the command "adb reboot recovery" or "adb reboot bootloader" or whatever to do what you need to do.
Wipe all then cant boot into bootloader
Hi, i'm really sorry to bring back this post,
your fear had become my nightmare in reality.
The volume button was somehow (either physically spoil or is not capture click)
during booting process.
I have completely forgotten about it, and do complete wipe
(select wipe all except sdcard in touch recovery).
So, now the phone is completely clean (without rom)
and i'm unable to trigger bootloader/recovery via pwr/vol down button.
I have try take out battery, leave it for 10min and try press
all those button without casing/rocker;
press & hold vol down, den plug in battery;
and press both vol up & down then only pwr button.
The phone now (i assume) boot normally,
stop at HTC logo because there is no rom inside
(just like normal pc boot pass bios but cant find OS).
ironically, i live at singapore too... haha...
---------- Post added at 10:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:51 PM ----------
I read somewhere that the person use pin to press the button really hard
and it manage to go into bootloader
(but I cant find back that post now)
Searching in forum recommend me to peel off the
volume button cover n use pin to press on it directly
(which I do not dare )
So now I sent it to repair shop,
hopefully that person using either g-box or gmbox
(flash box start with G) and can push RUU inside.
God bless me.
p/s : Sorry I should post in Q&A...
Get the phone off. Pull the battery and re-insert. Open fastboot
Fastboot reboot-bootloader
And if you want to flash a ruu directly:
Fastboot erase cache
Fastboot oem rebootRUU
And then flash the ruu

You need to let go of power, but keep holding vol down. If you don't let go of power, nothing will happen (except the phone shutting off).
The most surefire way (works in just about any situation) is to hold power and volume down. Don't let go of volume down until I say so later. The capacitive buttons will flash after about 5 seconds. Then the buttons will stop flashing, the screen will turn off (if it was on). After that, release the power button, but keep holding volume down until the white bootloader screen shows up.
If the screen turns on at all, the phone will always be able to go to bootloader. Failure to get into bootloader is almost always a matter of the user not performing the button sequence properly, rather than an issue with the phone.

[Q] HOX stuck in bootloop with no access to bootloader

Ok.. I'm about to lose hope, please any creative ideas will be much appreciated..
I think i did a big mistake trying to update to the latest nightly release of CM 10.2 using the auto-update feature of cm 10.1...
The end result is a bootloop, gets up to the CM rotating animation for a few seconds and reboots.
on top of that:
unable to get into bootloader using pwr+vol up nor vol down
unable to access device using adb nor fastboot - shows no device connected
the PC does not recognize the device though there are drivers installed, the charging LED lights up but no PC activity
all of the solutions i've seen assume either the recover/bootloader is available or the phone is accessed via fastboot/adb.
in this case neither are correct....
for some time i wanted to upgrade to htc one but not yet....
please help

tried it again several time, but as I said it doesn't work.
I get a black screen (not the CM animation) and than reboot all over again.
You could try letting it drain completely. Then charge a bit and try again.

You are mostly likely not performing the button combo correctly. If there were no bootloader (hboot), the screen would not be coming on at all. Not getting into bootloader is almost always a case of not doing the button combo correctly. The one possible exception, is if your volume rocker has failed (and simply not registering the vol down being pressed).
Make sure you hold vol down, and do not let go until the while bootloader screen comes up.
Recovery is a different story, as you can indeed not have recovery installed, and the phone will still function. But hboot and recovery are 2 different things.

I wish it was the case,
when i try to go into hboot the device instead of going into another boot until animation cycle, goes into black screen boot cycle. which means most likely that the action (PWR+Vol) does have an effect otherwise it would have continued to go into same boot cycle through the CM animation..
besides there is a recovery installed, or at least was...
is there anyway to re-install the hboot part without the hboot/fastboot availability?

Please help me to unbrick my Xoom MZ600

Hi All,
I've turned on my Xoom after a while and then I've got stuck in the Boot screen with the Motorola logo and the following message in the left upper corner: Starting RSD Protocol Support 3.
I tried to do Power + Volume Up for approx 1min. to do a soft reset and nothing happened. It's frozen.
In addition, I've connected the Xoom MZ600 to the PC and downloaded RSDLite v6.1.4, It gets detected and gets connected by the way... and also downloaded the VZW_MZ600_Signed_HRI39_Signed_MDM600BP_C_02.0F.00R_SW.combo.sbf.
Then I started to flash it and all went ok, Last message was Passed, but when the tablet is rebooting it gets stuck again in the "Starting RSD Protocol Support 3".
Also, when it was going to reboot after the RDSLite, I tried to press Volume down to try to get to fastboot, but nothing happens, it gets straight away to the "Starting RSD Protocol Support 3".
So, NO fastboot is available... although I saw a fastboot option in the RSDLite.
Please any other way to get it back?
Thanks in advance.

Hold down the volume down key while turning the Xoom on and keep it down until you see some text on the bootloader screen. At that stage you should be in fastboot mode. If you get to fastboot mode, unlock your bootloader, then see if it boots.

Hello oldblue910, Thanks very much for your help. However, pressing and holding volume up + power at the Xoom doesn't do anything.
Hmmm... with the Xoom at the RSD screen, volume up + power should reboot the device. If that's not doing anything, I'll have to do some more research tomorrow. I'll get back to you.
