[Q] Asus Transformer or Motorola Xoom? - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Since the Asus Transformer is not available I'm considering buying a Xoom. What do you think about it, that's a good decision or should I wait?
I do not want to wait further of the Transformer (May/June?) or is it worth?
Sorry for my bad English but i hope you understand me

In my opinion, compared to the Transformer, the Xoom is massively overpriced.
I think my Transformer is great, but I'm finding the size and weight compared to my 7" Galaxy Tab a distinct disadvantage, which doesn't altogether surprise me.
So, the 8.9" Galaxy Tab might be the sweet spot for me, though once I get my keyboard dock for the Transformer, I may decide that it is a significant enough advantage for me to keep the Transformer.
Either way though, I wouldn't buy the Xoom
Regards,
Dave

OK, right, the Keyboarddock is an unbeatable argument for the transformer but it is not available in Germany :-(
My Preorder at expansys UK has unfortunately no information on the availability
Where did you bought yours?

I've moved from a Galaxy Tab as well and I have to say that the size difference has taken some getting used to. I used to take my tab with me all the time but this Transformer stays at home more often. Once the dock arrives I think I'll take it out more as it'll feel safer to carry as if it were a netbook.

I got my Transformer from Comet (like virtually everyone else here is seems). The keyboard dock seems to be the hold up for the bundle, but Asus have offered a pre-order programme for people who bough the tablet on its own, to ship 2nd half of May.

Do you know if comet sent to Germany?
Do you have an address from comet for me where I could order it be like without a dock?

you can use a service like borderlinx or vpost that are services that provids you with UK and US address and when they recive the package they sent it to you, so they act like a middel man.

I dont feel the Xoom is priced too high. Here in the US, the Acer 16gb is $449. Xoom 32 gb is $599. Acer $28 a gig, Zoom $18.71 a gig. Cant compare the Asus, no set price yet. Yes, I have the Xoom and love it.

That's somewhat of an apples and oranges comparison as smaller memory capacity devices will always cost more per GB that largers ones due to the percentage of the cost that's taken up by non-memory components.
Is there a price for the 32Gb version of the A500 to compare with yet ?

Indeed! It's a rather bad metric for a price comparison.
In the UK, the Transformer is priced at £379, and the WiFi Xoom at £499. Yes, the Xoom has 32GB memory compared to the Transformers 16GB, but that's £120 more for an additional 16GB which simply isn't worth it all other things being considered (e.g IPS screen the Transformer).
Even Apple only charges an additional £79 going from 16GB to 32GB on the iPad2!
Of course, we don't *know* the US price for the Transformer yet, so it is impossible to quantify value based on US prices.
Regards,
Dave

Actually it's slightly easier in the UK as Asus have revealed the price for the upcomming 32Gb transformer which should be £430 (same price as 16Gb & Keyboard bundle).
So that means we can compare the wifi versions of the 32Gb Transformer, 32Gb Acer Iconia A500 and 32Gb Xoom on a level playing field
Transformer is £430 which is £13.44 per Gb
A500 is £450 which is £14.06 per Gb
Xoom is £480 which is £15 per Gb
For comparison the 32Gb Wifi ipad 2 is £479 which is £14.97 per Gb
(Motorola can discuss the wisdom of charging more than the equivalent ipad with Samsung who initially tried the same thing with the Galaxy tab)

Yes: you're paying £120 for a 16gb card
Serves motorola right for charging to much, firstly not very many people in the US bought one for that reason, and now with the Asus and Acer prices it just show what they should have charged in the first place.
If i want big i can fit a 32gb into my 16gb transformer and another 32gb card in my docking station.
16 + 32 + 32 = freaking **** loads and that would still be cheaper than buying a xoom!

That's the worst argument I have ever heard, you compare harddrives by using price per GB since that's all they do. According to your logic I should just buy a harddrive instead of a tablet since it's cheaper per GB.
Also the Xoom is more expensive in the 32GB section as well (both Frys and Newegg had the 32GB version up for $499) plus it has less features for either a 100 or 200 USD more.

Yes, the Xoom will become overpriced at $599 for the 32GB wifi-only once the other Honeycomb tablets are released. Right now it's not overpriced, because it's the only game in town (at least, outside of the UK).
However, I'll add that the 32GB vs. 16GB model question isn't so easily answered as just saying "you can add an SD card." So far, it's looking like Honeycomb doesn't have a way to store apps on anything but the internal memory, and unless that changes than the more internal storage you can afford, the better.

I can't see ever filling up the internal memory with apps. Isn't almost all of the internal 16GB available for app storage?

When you start seeing games in the Tegra Zone that are GBs in size like PC games are, then you will wish you had 32GB of internal memory. The only way I will go 16GB is if the 32GB doesn't have a release date at launch for the Transformer.

True about the games, but most developers put those large downloads on the SD card. I'm assuming that will hold true here as well, once Google and all the other manufacturers get the SD card situation under control.

[Q] How many months until we see it for the MSRP?

For being lauded as a wonderful $400 tablet, I'm not sure about spending well over $500 for one.
Will there be a new generation before we see a $400 transformer for the tablet alone? I have no use for a dock, I just want a nice hackable tab, and the nook isn't really cutting out even at 1.3ghz.

It's available now for MSRP so I really don't get what you're saying.
he probably means 'readily' available, as in, walk in, walk out with one from a retailer.

i dont think so he said he's not sure about spending 500 for the TF. what are you referring to OP? shipping, taxes or are you from another country? in north america MSRP is 400.
talking about 32gb ? It's 500 here, msrp too
i think he is talking about how ppl on Amazon is selling it for 550
i walked in and walked out with one
By early June to Mid June 2 major competitors (Samsung and someone I forgot) will be on the market. The Asus will be like the Xoom at that point.
Once they start shipping slightly higher qtys it should open up quickly as there are many duplicate and triplicate orders being placed because of the resellers policies of accepting orders and payment then arbitrarily canceling them after some time. Check out the availability thread and stick with the reliable resellers.

Why do you say that? The TF 16GB wifi-only is $399. The equivalent Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 16GB wifi-only will be $499. So, the TF will still be the least expensive option (as well as the most interesting given the dock) in its class.

Agreed. The TF will be the inexpensive alternative in that case.
There will be plenty of people who will want this just because it is $100 (which is a sizable chunk) cheaper and still has a great screen.
I wouldn't be surprised if the TF eats into Samsung's sales -- not vice versa. For instance, I was going to go for the 10.1 but given its late release date and the awesome TF specs, I decided to change my mind and go with Asus.
I ask because I haven't found an online retailer in the us that shows it for $400.
I guess people are taking advantage of scarcity currently.

IMHO Samsung will be of higher quality materials. Hopefully it will also have the Samsung processor The killer for Samsung is the 8.9 form factor unit. This size is closer in price, considerably lighter, and IMHO (as an iPad, NC, and soon Transformer owner) a better size for a pure tablet.
The advantage for the Transformer is a dock. With that I would buy it at even a higher price point because of the content creation capabilities. But to a lot of users this is not as big as an a factor.
But, the bottom line is that as more Android tables come on line the impact of any particular unit like the Transformer becomes less and less. It just like what happened with phone. The original Droid was unique, the follow-ons are just another Android phone.
Toshiba? I have seen their tablet (at CES?) and if it is really this one, i am happy i have gone with the transformer, the camera was directly under your finger, lot of (useless?) buttons where you would hold the tab (if you are a lefty), and i doubt the screen will match the transformer one (not sure about this one) and i also doubt it will match the low price...One interesting thing about it though is the "removeable" battery. As for the samsung, it seems great, nice screen, look great, comes in (2?) sizes, but the 3 main reasons i didn't wait to see it is first, the price, doubt they will match the transformer (maybe the little one but i already own a galaxy s, so for little screen i am served) the updates... well the only device i got from samsung was the galaxy s, waited an eternity to get froyo but for gingerbread, wasn't so long (but a LOT of people are complaining that they never updates, etc) and third, the dock, the galaxy tab doesn't seem to want to release a dock at the launch which is definately + for me... other thing that samsung could do to get more customer is to get a processor other than tegra 2 which could actually play 1080p/720p with every profiles... but i don't think they have revealed yet which they are gonna settle with. So i am actually getting my first tablet, transformer with dock, making my programmation course with it and then, i may buy a super quad core tablet
(Dang, think this is my biggest post so far )
EDIT: oh well maybe not finally, just looked enormous on my little galaxy s screen lol

Disagree.
The Xoom was never that popular to begin with so I don't see how you can use that as a comparison.
Again, the biggest point here is the price; form factor is one thing but that only might affect a buyer. Price always caters to a wide audience.
In fact, the only reason in mind that the Xoom sold any units is because it was the only Honeycomb tablet available.
Nobody cares that the Xoom's 32 GB price is the same as the Ipad's 32 GB price. Most people will look at the price and just cringe. It is quite clear that there is a bigger market for a more affordable tablet.
Not only did the Xoom needed to match Apple's lowest price offering, it needed to be EVEN lower -- or else why not just go for the iPad? That is what goes through the minds of most consumers: they might care about size, OS or whatever form factor but in the end it always boils down to price. (when you don't hold the same brand weight as Apple)
The Asus TF is the most affordable quality Honeycomb tablet. (By FAR the most affordable) That is the biggest reason why it is hot right now. Even though I think Samsung will sell the 10.1 and 8.9 just based on brand name alone, I still think Asus will retain strong sales as long as it remains the most affordable quality HC tablet. Asus already has the advantage of releasing the TF a month before Samsung plans to release just the 10.1.
I'm trying to decide between ASUS and Samsung. If ASUS really needs to get these in stores soon.

[Q] Best tablet on the market?

What is the best Android tablet right now?
I really want
1) 1 GB RAM
2) Dual Core
3) 9.7 inch or superior
4) microSD or SD
5) WiFi
6) Android 3.0
7) light
8) thin
9) Excellent battery
10) Gorgeous display, good resolution
11) Netflix (I don't care if I have to root the phone)
12) Ability to root the tablet (this is VERY important)
13) Price
I would ideally like something that looks as cool as the iPad 2
I REALLY like how Apple makes their devices really thin, especially the iPad 2, it looks SO awesome
Any suggestions?
I want to buy the tablet within the next 30 days or so, I only like to wait if it makes sense. For example, I am tired of waiting for the Samsung Galaxy SII, by the time it comes I won't buy it, it just arrived way too late for my taste
So, if the answer is "Wait 2 months and then..." then I'm not interested
If I have to wait 30 days or so, I guess I can, but I REALLY want a nice Tablet since I've bought numerous games/apps that I think will look better on the Android Tablet
I want to buy the Tablet at Newegg
Here's the (almost) perfect one for you.... The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. It has all what you're looking for (except for the sdcard slot) but has a lot more features and it is available at Newegg at a reasonable price.

yeah he pretty much covered it...i just got a 10.1" galaxy and i love it! it would be nice to have an sd card slot, but 32gb is a decent ammount of space, and if you need more you can get a usb adapter that plugs into the 30 pin connector (basically makes the 30 pin slot a usb slot) and plus in thumb drives and such...android > ios, and the galaxy is actually thinner than the ipads...samsung makes a GREAT tablet!
If your looking to get one right now and not wait than the samsung galaxy that just came out is your best bet. although just fyi you are getting close the shopping season so you are going to see a slew of different models coming out from various companies, and you will always get that buyers remorse feeling as the item that comes out 2 weeks after you buy yours will have some new fancy feature added to it.
But as of right this minute the galaxy should meet your needs.
you can also consider the asus transformer, which is competing with the galaxy tab
The Asus Transformer is $399 the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is $499
The Asus Transformer has Micro SD Card reader the Galaxy Tab 10.1 does not
So, with all due respect to all the previous comments, why should I spend the extra $200?
I dislike Apple's stupid way of charging $100 extras for a simple 16GB of space, and now Samsung (which copies A LOT of Apple, hence the legal problems it has with them), follows exactly the same idea
charge $100 extra for 16GB
So, if I buy the Asus, I can be happy with the 16GB, and then I can upgrade it
Please confirm if the Asus Transformer (which sells for $399) has expansion
So far it seems the difference is the width of the tablet, the Samsung is 30% more thinner
same with the weight 20% more lighter for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
Anyway, I have a $799 limit.
WIth that money I can buy a Turtle Beach PX5 + Asus Transformer and still have $136 credit left, which allows me to buy a Newegg extended warranty
PLus with teh Asus Transformer I have the extended keyboard
Bottom line, the reason why I don't see myself buying a Samsung Galaxy 10.1 is because I am FORCED to buy the 32GB model, since these Apple copycats decided that they need to charge $100 for 16GB
So I don't want to buy something not-upgradable, so I have to go for the more expensive model
If I go for Samsung I would spend $888 for both products, so there's a BIG $200 difference
Hi,
One of the best android tabs around right now would be th Asus transformer, by it's hardware, Asus's update quality, and by it's price. I would definitely go for that one, but maybe wait for the Asus Transformer 2 coming out in a few months ^^

Well, have you actually tested that tablet?
I would REALLY, REALLY like to use it as a e-Book reader.
So, if it weights too much, then it might won't do the trick
Ideally I would like something that feels similar to the iPad, something that feels confortable so I can read books from that thing
Thanks a lot
I'd buy a Kindle or similar for ebooks - it's much nicer to read on for long periods than a back-illuminated screen.

Is this a good deal?

A certain location online (I will disclose via PM), is offering the Galaxy Tab 8.9 16GB (refurb) with keyboard dock, desktop dock, leather pouch, and SD card reader for $300.
I have been using my HP Touchpad as an android 4.0 device, but it has its issues. I might sell it to pay for part of this deal, but just wondered if this is a decent tablet at that price.
Thanks for any assistance!

I think it's an incredible deal.
I find 7 inch tablets to be too small, the 10 inch tablets to be too big but the 8.9 format was just right. I couldn't justify buying an 8.9 when it was $445 so I just opted not to buy until prices fell.
To get it for $300 (previous BB open box deals were $349) and get all those accessories for 'free' is too good to miss. I placed my order this morning. Yeah, it's end of life, but so what?

Cool. I ordered mine too, but later realized that it didn't have an SD card slot. This was a disappointment, but I figure if it doesn't work out for me I can always return it!

Pretty decent deal. The telcos up here(Rogers Canada) where giving away the Samsung 10.1 on a 1year plan ($250). But that is a decent deal too.
Yes, that's a great deal, and I hope you jumped on it because now it's back up to $380. I'm pissed because I didn't go for it yesterday.

A Little Advice

Hey,
Officially not the owner of a Transformer Prime, woohoo, got the refund I was after! But, its in store credit . I can't seem to find out where JB-Hi-FI says I can't have a cash refund:
http://www.jbhifi.com.au/documents/corporate/43_2012-01-06_10-10-25.pdf
So a massive gift card is what I get. So, I want the Infinity 32GB no dock, although probably will get one later, but I am not exactly sure about how to go about it. My other options in the store are a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (Poo), Toshiba Excite 10 (Err, not really), Nexus 7 (honestly, too small) and the A510 which is Acer and overheats. So really the Infinity does seem like the best. As many of you know the 64GB with dock is the first to release in Australia which to me seems mental, the person running ASUS over hear must be cos there are lots of wierd decisions. And there is no word on the 32GB which I am sure will eventually come, but I am not waiting another 6 weeks for it, so how am I supposed to deal with this. Anyone know an eta on the 32GB?
Thanks,
Hi,
i live in Italy and i also wanted to buy the 32GB version (more cheap) but ended up buying the 64GB version (a retailer had a very good price on it =515 euro) because there's no word about any other version here. I heard that Asus is selling the 32GB version in France, but i didn't checked that personally.

Well for me it means paying an extra $300 odd dollars which is way more than I intended. I would possibly buy a 32GB with the dock but no way would I buy the 64GB, I would just never use that much.
32 GB is available here in US at best buy for 499
All good and helpful but I live in Australia. At least Apple has global releases and a pretty much fixed price, instead of plopping them here and there and raising the price everywhere. And yeah, if I did need the 64GB, I would just use an SD card, I only used about 6GB of my Prime, couldn't really use much more unless I filled it with movies. JB Hi-Fi have been extremely helpful and I can't really blame them for not getting the 32GB in, no one really has it but hopefully it shouldn't be too long. If not, I may be able to haggle down a Galaxy S3, but really, I bought the Prime to replace the laptop, and now I want an Infinity to replace the Prime so the docking and big screen are pretty important. In store credit, just hate them. Unless there was a way to import through them.

If not, I may be able to haggle down a Galaxy S3, but really, I bought the Prime to replace the laptop, and now I want an Infinity to replace the Prime so the docking and big screen are pretty important. In store credit, just hate them. Unless there was a way to import through them.

This may sound dumb, but I'm just taking a stab at it. But would shipping be that bad on something so small to prohibit buying on amazon and having it mailed to you. I realize that it'll cost you $40-$50 in shipping (guessing), but it means saving the $300 price hike and you actually get what you want and save the money. Or is it that you want to use that big ol gift card?
Thanks for the suggestion but yeah, I have to use this store credit. And the other problem is that Amazon dont ship electronics to Australia, had another store on hold though before I got the news I had a gift card.

Don't know what JBs is, quick google search suggests JB HIFI, an electronics outlet? But regardless, there are lots of places online that will buy your gift card. Again you will lose money, probably 20% (guessing), but you can get more for your card if you do a trade for credit to one of their cards for another outlet. I bought several gift cards to bestbuy for about 10% less then face value, used those to buy a TV that was already on sale and saved a massive amount in the end. Probably not the way you want to go, but just thinking outside the proverbial box.
Yeah, I would prefer to do it with the least amount of loss possible. But the good news is that the Prime is under $700 AUD with the dock for what I think is a first in Australia, so I think that suggests the Infinity will be in soon. They have axed the 32 GB no dock and have no 64GB at all, so it should be in. Official launch for the infinity is Tuesday so fingers crossed :fingers-crossed:

Hey,
Officially not the owner of a Transformer Prime, woohoo, got the refund I was after! But, its in store credit . I can't seem to find out where JB-Hi-FI says I can't have a cash refund:

Thanks,

Don't forget about the Lenovo S2110 which has a keyboard dock almost identical to the Transformer(even has a large battery). The S2110's CPU is a Snapdragon S4 which is a generation newer than the Tegra 3.
That looks pretty nice, coming from a non Lenovo fan such as me. Unfortunately, we get hit again as this tab isn't coming to Australia. Are we really that minor to every other country?
Yay, got my refund, time to place an order on buyspry.com for a TF700, lets hope I get a good, one, if not, everyone will hear about it
Ugh, so confusing about what to do. Still probably going with BuySPRY.com as they seem to have the best tock and shipping but thats where I am sorta stuck. Some online stores place the Infinity shipping $50 higher than others which confuses me. Its FedEx International Priority so some pretty decent shipping. Add on insurance is also covered with an extra cost of $15 which I think I will get. But if I need to send it back, thats where the problem begins. I read ASUS provides a warranty for devices everywhere no matter where they are from. But any more advice would be more than welcome.
Thanks,

Infinity: Why so expensive still?

Hey guys I currently have a Prime, and selling it so that I can get a new or slightly new Infinity but the issue I am running into is that they are still so expensive.
They still retail for $499 (32GB model), and people are selling them for around the same price on eBay for used. Is there going to be a price drop on these soon? How long should I wait to buy one?
I guess this is a good thing because they are clearly holding their value, but given the recent price drop on Refurbished Ipad's (3rd Gen), I would think that Asus would somewhat follow suit to keep things competitive.

Get the Nexus 10. $100 cheaper for 16gb. Or same price for 32gb and way better.

I saw the specs on the Nexus 10 and they are impressive, but I really like the functionality about the Transformer series. The idea of using it as a tablet/laptop is very ideal, being that I do not own a PC at home.
Does the Nexus 10 have HDMI out? That would be make or break for me if it didn't.
The Nexus 10 has MicroHDMI, just like the TF700.
You'd need a dongle or adapter to connect a normal HDMI cable.

Yeah, I just saw the specs on the Nexus 10 and they are pretty impressive (display), but I still like how the TF looks over the Nexus. The Nexus looks like a larger phone to me.
Plus, adding the keyboard to the TF just makes it look and seem so awesome. I guess in the end it comes down to price and reliability. I've heard stories about the TF, but since the Nexus 10 isn't even on shelves yet, I am sure that people will start to run into problems, just like any new device.
Difference: Nexus 10 = $399 (16gb) | TF700 = $488 (32gb)
I for one am very satisfied with my TF700. I find the docking keyboard to be really useful and the extra battery it contains is a nice touch. I personally haven't been hit by any of the quality control issues people have brought up on the forums and performance has been fine for what I think of as pretty heavy use.
The Nexus' 2GB of RAM is attractive, but on my TF700 I've always had more than 250MB of RAM free even with an animated live wallpaper, tons of desktop widgets, and a few floating apps open. I can see 2GB of RAM being important for futureproofing, as even Android acquires bloat with OS revisions and it would be nice to rely on a device for a few years into Android 5.0 or 6.0.
The Nexus series also tends to be more friendly to developers. Asus allows one to unlock their tablet, but Asus could stand to make it easier and if they ever shut down the server required for the unlock process, users would be SOL. With the Nexus devices it's generally as simple as entering one command through the Fastboot tool. Also, Asus has moved to crypto key signature checking for their newer bootloaders which prevents using the NVFlash tool for low-level pre-boot file management. So if you're planning on unlocking the device and you're lucky enough to get one running an earlier bootloader, unlock it as soon as you get it!
