I understand this is the Bolt forum, but I'm just wondering if Verizon will release a 4G phone that is not a smartphone?
Reason I ask is because during rooting or firmware changes your phone is basically out of commission, so if you could swap the SIM to another phone until thats done, that way you don't have to miss your calls.
I did the same thing when I had the nexus one. I would put the T-Mo sim onto a $20 prepaid phone until I finished a ROM change/upgrade. That way I didn't miss calls or texts.
I know some of you will say that I could put the SIM in another Bolt or in a Bionic or something, but that $500+ outright.
I doubt it. The flip phone days are numbered. All carriers would prefer to sell smartphones that require data plans (=more profit)

That may be, but there has to be ATLEAST one non-smartphone that they would release, atleast as a prepaid, for the budget-conscious.
I dont really see the point of a 4g feature phone. Maybe when they roll out voice over LTE they'll have that, but feature phones have what, a 25 or 250mb limit for their data packages? You can reach that cap in a few minutes on their 4g network, lol.
I doubt they'd do that. What would the point be, anyways? What flip-phone or feature-phone is going to need that kind of raw power? I can just see it now - a 74 year-old man trying to figure out how to stream YouTube on his Jitterbug 4GLTE phone.
Once verizon switches entirely to 4G, sure. Until then? Im sure its not a priority.

Exactly, until voLTE is everywhere, minimum couple years, they wouldnt think about it. I honestly cant wait for this, if they could make a phone that only needed the LTE sim card, no CDMA or EVDO radios, that would be awesome!
Seriously? You want a completely separate phone just so you can have it on while you're updating the ROM?
It would take more time to switch service over to the other phone and then back than it would to install the ROM. Installing a new ROM takes what, 2 or 3 minutes max.
Really?
I wouldn't be surprised if big red did away with feature phones once 4g is in full affect, and data is tiered

This.
(And a few more characters.)
OP must be insanely popular if he misses calls/texts during the 30 seconds it takes to flash a rom
but seriously, it would be nice to drop your sim into a cheap backup phone in case you brick your daily driver. this happened to me with my captivate (3 finger recovery didn't work)

exactly what i thought
whats a flip phone?
Thanks for the suggestions, and criticisms.
And yes, I get calls during upgrades.
The call forwarding seems like a good option. But how much would that cost? And is it not-toll-free to forward a call from my cell to another number thats a different area code?
And, yes I know some people who have landlines to keep the telemarketers and credit card companies off their cell during the day. Apparently its less of a hassle to pay for it than deal with those calls.

Better yet, just get a Google Voice number and use that as your primary number. Then you can have the call ring anywhere you want, even on your computer. No need to worry about keeping a separate phone just for this specific situation.

I don't know about how to get around the data plan, but I don't think you can be running Gingerbread not rooted.
Its all about luck, i bought an iphone from ebay and used it without a data plan for 6months, then i sold it and bought htc aria, within one hour of inserting a sim i received a message from att that we have added a data plan for your smarphone

i wanna know if i can get her full internet access on her phone without having to change her ad on feature.

You should be able to use wifi for free without a data plan. Menu > Settings > Wireless and Networks, just trun on wifi and you can download as much as you want. You just can't use 3g/4g without a data plan unless I'm mistaken.

not true, she has a data ad on her account right now (thats how she was getting data on her flip phone)
i was hoping a dedicated way around it not just utilizing wifi.
i use to get full data on my n95 with "tzone" back in the day. and i was only paying 6 bucks a month and got unlimited internet and 3g
i know there is a way around it, just need to ask the right person

So, what you think is that all of us are too stupid to know about a way to get free data if there was one? Our phones are rooted, hacked, Undervolted, OC'd and modified to death. But for some reason we all missed the free interwebz..... ........more dot.......Dots.......some dots againz...
She is on a smart phone now. It can download easily 5 and 6 gigs a month. ATT isn't going to let you do it for free.... And the data plans aren't just 30 bux. There are 15, 25, and 35.. Each for certain types of users. 15 is 200mb, 25 is 2000mb, 35 is tether and 4000mb
Those are your choices. Notice free is not one of them.

So I had the Inspire 4G on AT&T and my girlfriend became an ex and now I don't have service. I was wondering if I can swap the ROM to a Verizon ROM and run it on their network. Please help.
Short answer, no. The long answer has to do with radio frequencies and technology used. For voice and 2G data you could use T-mobile. You may have a regional service provider option also. I do not know what is available in your area.
No you can't. ATT is gsm and Verizon is cdma. You could use it on tmobile if its unlocked but will only get edge speeds.

Your best option is to sell the phone now, while its hot and get some good money off of it and buy another phone.
I personally am still pretty new to rooting and all but doesn't verizon have sim cards for their world phones?
Thanks for the information, I didn't think I would be able to. It is rooted but I need to do a complete wipe on the phone and return it to stock with root. Thanks for the help and hopefully I will be able to sell this with some scuffs on it. Maybe just try for $100 rooted.
or unlock it and use simple mobile... unlimited everything for like 60 bucks a month, ( and 3g ) no contract. but check coverage.. etc....
Why not do the most simple thing get a pay as you go phone. Swap the sim into the inspire. $50 unlimited everything. Don't try telling me it wont work either. I have used two different iphones and a blackberry on pay as you go. And dont try the different sim thing either. When I went contract they had me use the same sim. Just go get a cheap pay as you go phone register it swap the sim and try it out.
Buddy 3g won't work. The frequency bands are not compatible with tmkbile(simple mobile). Unless you got Att or a side branch that runs off at towers and signal, you will ONLY get Edge speeds end of story. Don't proven using tmobile and simple mobile.

Ok I tried to keep this nice but sense you you want to get rude about it. Let me let you in on a little secret, for the past few months att has been locking the prepaid sim cards to the phone by IMEI they are activated on for 6 months. The only way to have it unlocked is by calling them to get it unlocked in which case they want the imei of the new phone. They have also implamented the IMEI scan they do for the contract lines. So even if you have an older sim card that is not locked, After a while then will notice and data will stop working. Now How do I know this you ask? I just spent the last year as the Store manager for a local ATT retail store. So the next time you decide to be rude, you might want to take a min and think that maybe, just maybe you dont have all the facts.
And I do stand corrected on the pay-per use data. That was what it did before they started blocking it.

Okay this requires you to have another IMEI number so if you have a Infuse you will need either a iPhone a BlackBerry or a LTE phone's IMEI number
Call AT&T tell them you need to update your IMEI # and update the Unlimited Data plan to the Unlimited Data plan for that phone. I used a Skyrocket IMEI for NY Infuse they took a few minutes updating it and once I got off the phone I went into Airplane mode and out of Airplane mode and had full speeds again.
Everytime you are throttled call back give them the old IMEI # and have them update the Data Plan again for full speeds!
No need to change your APN!
Hit Thanks if this helps you!

This is a SERIOUS security concern that the govt. doesn't deal with easy. IMEI numbers are used to track phones, esp when they want to point in on law breakers.
I would NOT suggest anyone doing this.
One reprieve is that you are not physically changing the IMEI of your device. But I am still unsure of how ethical this is.
Edit: Also, if I am not wrong, IMEI number is transmitted every time you place or receive a call.
Yes but if you own the phone

Yeah. And then you will get the email telling you to stop tethering and then if you don't you will be pushed through to the tethering plan.
Optimus, I think that bbs are different. There plans are weird. For instance, you can tether to a playbook and whatnot.

Just change IMEI's to another device of yours that has a different data plan as long as its a smart phone it'll fix it
Sent from my SGH-I997 using XDA App
The other issue to think about is that there are different data plans, even for the same level. For example, there is a $30 3GB smartphone 3G plan, $30 3GB iPhone plan, $30 3GB iPhone 4S plan, $30 3GB smartphone 4G plan, etc. They may all seem the same to you, but when your bill comes you could end up with pro-rated charges for each one.

Simple answer: Use the phone data plan as a phone data plan, and not as replacement to home internet.
Whatever you do, you'll get caught one way or other. And changing IMEI's can have really bad consequences, even if you own the other device. Just saying.

Nothing illegal about switching your SIM to another phone and having AT&T update their database with the correct data plan. The government couldn't care less about this since you're not cloning or changing the IMEI of the phones.

Ok so Ive purchased the wifi operated one for my pops. Hes old and is always back and forth on his microsoft laptop so I figured this would make things a lot easier for him. He likes it so far. He currently has a verizon flip phone that is hooked up on Page Plus. Im not sure how the carrier operated ones work or what they do, can someone explain so I can have a better understanding so I then can figure out if I should return and get him the carrier operated one.
1) Im assuming you can pop a sim card in and pay for a plan but can you make phone calls like a cell phone?
2) is this wifi tablet that he currently have able to make wifi calls atleast?
3) I cant talk him into a smartphone so he will probably never make calls with a carrier based tablet, but he may want to have a data connection continuously when out and about. So im guessing getting a carrier based one would be necessary for this.
4) again, he has a verizon flip phone running on page plus which uses verizons towers, do they make a samsung verizon galaxy tab 2 or just sprint and at&t?
5) I was also considering the galaxy tablet note but baby steps for the old man lol....but I thought he might use the tv/tablet function.......but probably not, too much explaining lol
Any info to clear some things up would be great please.....I only have 15 days to return it.

I believe Verizon has the GT2 too. I know they have the original because I just sold mine.
I love my GT2 10.1" It's connected to AT&T because that is my carrier. The Verizon one I have cost me $30 a month. (I think they got rid of the tab only plan and jammed shared data down their customers throat. So it cost $40 a month.
Hope I was able to answer some questions for you.

Yea man, thanks a lot. So basically if I did decide to get the verizon one, he may be able to use his same plan for data?
And while we are on the subject, how the heck do I get his contact off his senior flip phone to a new google account? If he still had verizon, they woukd be synced with verizon and I can grab the .csv file from there site and import in google, but now that he has page plus(verizon towers still), im not sure if he can access the verizon backup site...is there another way without inputting manually?

The international unlocked P3100 version has phone call feature. I'm debating getting this tablet for that feature since my Nexus 7 3G doesn't have it, but there's seems to be less development and the spec and screen resolution isn't as good. Although I do like having microSD slot since even the 32GB on the Nexus 7 isn't enough to hold my craps. People must like this thing a lot since I can't even find used ones for sale. Wouldn't mine more feedbacks from P3100 owners.
Also I'm confused about the carrier bands of this model, GSMArena posted:
HSDPA 900 / 2100 - GT-P3100
HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 - GT-P3105
However I read the contrary from Amazon reviews. Can someone confirm does the P3100 version work with ATT and/or TMobile 3G? Otherwise I'll have to pass on it.

I don't know about Page Plus, and how they operate. Sounds like a prepaid account. I only use post paid, because even though prepaid my be cheap for the individual, it could get pricey for a family plan. Personally I think you should have him check out the Note 2. It is big, I owned it for a while, but if I wanted a big phone I could use as a tablet (It even comes with a S-Pen) I would use it. I am not sure how Verizon handles the contacts.
If the flip phone has something called send vcard you can do that with his contacts and then in his google account on a computer import the vcards to his contacts,I did it with my work phone they supplied me

Yea maybe once he gets used to the way the android system works he will make the switch, but he may hate it cause of the battery on these smartphones.

Ok, ill check it out. Im not sure what vcard is. If I do find it in his phone, where woukd it be located? Is it software or is it an actual sd card or something. Once found do u need to plug the phone into a pc, not sure if he has data plan on his phone to send wirelessly. Thanks guys.

Got it to work using blue tooth. Sent the contacts right to my phone, synced to google, then signed in to google on the tablet and it worked like a charm.....nice. Pops is chillen now. Oh and I got it to send and receive calls on wifi.....the speakers work pretty good when on a call and quality is reasonable on both ends of call.

OK I'm about to switch my service over to sprint and i've read that people are having trouble getting the 32gb phones you order from Google connected to sprint... Is the issue resolved or is sprint still being dumb about it. I called my local store and they were lost... Thanks for any advice

Yea I had it for a week and realized it was garbage here in California, couldn't get anything over 2Mbps in 4G areas. Finally gave up when I tried downloading an app and it said estimated time remaining was 32 hours. Bought the 32GB from the play store plus the $30 T-Mo prepaid SIM and haven't looked back.
The nexus 5 and sprint aren't bad(where I live your results may vary) all you need beforehand is a sprint Sim card for activation. Just pop it in and reboot. That's it

You shouldn't have any issues but I'd recommend taking a trip to a corporate store to get it activated. The one trip up they had getting it activated involved omitting the first digit of the IMEI number in their activation system so if theyre having issues, have them look in to that.
Also, make sure they have micro SIM cards in stock before you go in with your phone else you might need to wait for them to order one.
Haven't had issues with fallback, but YMMV.

I have the 32 Gi model and I activated online. I had to omit the last digit of the IMEI but since then it has been smooth sailing for me

No issues. NYC coverage is suffice. I don't really run into issues having to make phone calls. That article was interesting, though.

I have problems using my Nexus 5 on Sprint. If I leave it on LTE, when a phone call comes in, it does not allow me to answer the call, and then the phone locks up, requiring a forced shutdown and subsequent restart in order to use the phone. So I can only use it in forced 3G /CDMA mode for daily use. I sometimes manually switch it to LTE on occasion, but again, only when I am not expecting calls. Yes, it sucks.
Before you go to sprint Google about them, or go read comments on their Facebook, YouTube, or just all over. Their lte is slower than other carriers by close to 10mbps, spotty, and inconsistent. 3g is pretty much dialup, and calls drop all over. I used to have them through my company for years in 3 states, I ended up paying for my own service just so I could enjoy decent performance.

Sounds like a problem with your phone. Plenty here on Sprint without that issue

Like all services, depends on where you live. I've been all over the country and haven't had a problem. In NY I'm getting great speeds at a great price. Once you get over 20mbps, it doesn't make too much of a difference for mobile data. They're also rolling out their LTE network pretty aggressively in a lot of areas and have major money behind them now

It's limited to only certain areas of the US. Read the article at the following link, and you will see, it's not just me. http://s4gru.com/index.php?/blog/1/...-due-to-circuit-switched-fallback-technology/

I'm aware of this problem, but I don't see what it has to do with your phone locking up during an incoming call. I could be completely wrong, but I see nothing in the article that describes the problem you're having

eCSFB is the problem. The phone, when in LTE mode, fails to give up access to LTE, forcing the phone to remain in LTE, and when a call comes in, no matter how many swipes you make, the phone app cannot force the phone to answer the phone. The Phone app locks up the phone, forcing a reboot to get out of the locked state. Once they start Spark in this area, and they send out an update, this issue will go away, but in the meantime, people at least in the DC area, will have issues.

Interesting. I haven't read anything about it locking up the phone. Only read that calls wouldn't come through.

I think its more of a case of interpretation. If you cannot physically answer the phone, because it the app locks up because the LTE connection will not release, then it may be viewed as the calls not coming through.
