Hi
I bought 5 cheap micro USB cables to have one everywhere.
At first they seem to work, but charging is a LOT slower. I even think that it stops charging at some point (the phone will report 100% battery but in fact it could be 50%). Data transfer and ADB works fine.
I tested with two Galaxy S and they both had the same issue.
Anybody noticed the same? Is there something I should look for when buying micro USB cables to make sure they do charge my phone?

Okay so my usb port has been a bit annoying the past week - where i had to vigorously wiggle the cable to get it to charge or to sync (and even when it did decide to connect to the computer, it would chop out eventually)
But now it's no longer charging or being recognized by my comp
It's strange because the headphone adapter was working fine, and so was the usb host, but it just wont charge anymore - I effectively now have a dead TG01
Currently, i'll get the orange light, telling me it's charging, but when i try to power on, nothing happens...
So i'm thinking a new USB port which is where I need some help: I'm not sure on what part to get
But maybe This is the one? Comparing the images with the ones found on the net of the TG01 (Yep - I still haven't got mine open yet)
But yeah, just a heads up on whether you think it would work would be epic, or whether you think i should just try a different battery/charger/throw it away (Although i'm almost certain it's the port, as it was working intermitently before - it's now gone altogether)
are u using only usb to charging or an wall charger?

Wall charger, but i tried USB, and still no luck
It just wont charge at all, regardless of the orange light when plugged in now that it's off (though i wouldn't get it when the phone did still have charge left and was therefore still switched on...)
BUMP: Any ideas you clever people? Just some guidance would be nice...
I'm still without my beloved TG01, I'm having to use a **** old Samsung G600
I do have some problems of my own with my USB cable. I believe the problems are due to the cable, though. The wall charger works fine. The USB cable that I use, has to stay somehow "forced"... imagine having the cell laying face up on a desk. The USB cable gets out and is forced by a small pen that stays right near the cellphone, to have a 30% slope upwards, so pushing a bit the cable onto the upper part of the USB port. I do know that you are telling us a different issue, however, maybe this way you could check whether it's just a broken connection and not a completely dead port.
No, this sounds like the exact issue i had...
It was like this with the Charger and USB - where i had to force it to be recognised or charged, and it would still cut out after a while - and wiggling it or knocking it wouldn't actually affect it, it would be of it's own accordance...
But it was strange because the headphone adapter worked fine...
Nothing happens at all now though
Are you try: Settings- Connections- USB to PC- unmark Enable advanced network functionality
I can't turn the phone on because it wont charge, so it's not that
Battery may be defective. Try with any 5V charger, connect directly to battery pin in 10 min
Hi
It vaguely remembers me of something I read on the forum about different micro usb (explaining my different cables do not connect just the same, some easy, some bit forced); I think there also was a drawing. (but I don't have time to search for the exact thread; it was not the "solving usb port mistery one))
Maybe your earphone adaptator don't have exactly the same as your charger? And if it is not battery trouble, find a charger with the "very right" micro usb plug?
Thank you both so much for your response:
I understand why you say it could be the battery problem with the charger - but it doesn't explain the intermittent connection with my computer when using the USB cable. Which is convincing myslef more and more that it's a port problem
One solution for now would be to buy one of these cheap external battery chargers from eBay, but it would mean i still wouldn't be able to use sync using the USB cable and i'm a bit conscious on whether the charger is safe and wont fry my battery
Which is why i'm leaning towards having a stab at reparing it myself
It'd solve the issue directly and it'd be a safer and more secure solution too... (the external charger would have to be ordered in from Hong Kong eBay)
I'm having what seem to be exactly the same problems. I have used 2 x usb based chargers on it - and neither work (whereas they had been working for the past 6 months). Got a mains charger last week - was working for a while - but as of right now, no longer works.
I'm not sure what else to do. I will try later to use the other adapter I have for connection to usb keyboard. The strange thing is - this will probably work but charging won't!
So....is it the micro usb port that's broken? (strange if it is but still works for data)
OR
could it be the battery?
Anyone know where to buy the same cable with charger plug that comes with the phone? I bought a samsung cable off amazon and it doesn't work. Thanks.
It's a standard micro-USB cable. Amazon has some non-generics made by Blackberry for a little over a dollar.
I bought the Samsung Replacement USB Data Charging Cable for Samsung SPH-M330, SCH-R100, SGH-T939, SCH-R850 and it does not work with the Charge.
I bought this
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0049IE70I and
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001XXUOQI
I think the second one is the one you are saying you bought...I bought 4 of them and they all work.
I know its just a normal micro usb cable, but I also would like to find a few more of the factory cables that came with the Charge. They are really nice quality. If you compare part numbers the Charge cable and charger have a newer part number than what is currently available on samsungs website. Maybe they are slowly phasing the new cable and charger in replacing the older style.

The micro USB cable I'm using now that worked with the Thunderbolt does not work with the Charge. Does anyone know of any 6ft cables they know work with the Charge? I'm also wondering if it might be the cigarette adapter that is not up to the task.
you do have to be careful because several merchants are going to see the term "Charge Cable" and think that it is meant for the Charge, however it is actually meant for "Charging only"
I have several microusb charging cables and they do not allow usb mode, however if it clearly states "for sync" it should work...
cheap generics
MyCableMart offers some great deals on cables. I bought a 6ft and a 10ft from them and both work great with my Charge.

p.s. I can't post links yet

+1. Be careful. Any old USB to micro-USB cable will charge the phone, but you won't be reading or writing data without the proper version of the cable. I found that out the hard way after trying to get Odin to recognize the Charge with a generic cable for an hour before finally trying the OEM Samsung cable
I used my OG Motorola Droid's micro USB cable to root the other day, it worked flawlessly.
Any micro USB should work and can be bought anywhere. I used the micro USB cable from my WD Passport.

Just go with monoprice... http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10303#1030307
If you're not familiar with them- they do great quality cables (across the board) for dirt cheap...hdmi, home theater, computer etc...p.s. their LCD mounts are great and cheap too.
I'm personally trying to track down a good quality retractable micro-usb cable for use in the car...I looked at a few on amazon, but the reviews were sketchy for some issues with the connector not being long enough. Anyone have any experience?

+1 I am also using Motorola cables without any issues. Superb quality, using them for everything.

I only use the samsung cable when using odin. I read there is an extra pin for data but I might be wrong or motorola used the same data pin. I have 2 retractable cables I use, ine I keep in my bag for data transfer/charging and one in my work desk for charging only. My work Mac hates when I plug in the data cable so It's just safer to use the charge only cable if I'm not transfering data.
Apparently the Charge has a special cable with some pin that allows flashing through Odin.
Not only that, I'm pretty sure you need the correct type of cable for the correct voltage output(if you want a full and fast charge)
Hi all. I am deciding between the Charge and the Infuse for work (we have contracts with both ATT and Verizon).
I was reading about the USB cable for the Charge. Looks like I need the "special" cable to do both charging AND data as you guys are discovering.
Can anyone confirm if that is the same case for the Infuse?
Thanks
Ernie

I wouldn't join AT&T over something so minor as a USB cable. Verizon's network much more reliable imo.
It's not the phone that is causing the charge only/charge and data issue it's the cable itself. Some cables are marketed as charge only cables that are not made with any wires for data. There are universal cables for data and charging that have these wires.
What I was talking about is a special pin for use with Odin. Possibly a special factory function or error checking. That's why I always use the factory cable for flashing.
FYI: The cable I bought is defective as it won't work on my friends dx2 either. I still would like to know where to get the official cable from (assuming the price is not crazy) if anyone knows.
Thanks for the info guys. Interesting about that extra pin. Also a bit of a PITA since it nice to be able to use just any cable lying around.

My phone can transfer files at normal speeds in bootloader mode. It can even transfer files fine when booting up to kit kat. the issue is even though it does all I mentioned, it won't charge (or charges too slow to matter) via USB connected a PC or USB to any AC adapters. I've tried many working cables and AC adapters, could someone please help or point me in the write direction?
NOTE: It on occasion charges normally.

If it on occasion charges normally but not all the time then perhaps you have some internal damage at the charge port. Now I have no idea how to fix this but one other possibility you could try with the Nexus 5 is to get a wireless charger and see how that works out for you.

trying a wireless charger right now, same old game. slow charging still. I did notice the battery readings with Ampere, i attached a screenshot. the temp is negative -30 celsius on average often show a negative charging status no matter what charger is plugged in and EVEN with a wireless charger.
Does this mean I have a bad battery?
I'm afraid your guess is as good as mine at this point. I've never experienced that type of problem. I have experience of damage to the charge port with an old nook it behaved just like you said which is why I suggested wireless charging since we have it available on the Nexus.

yea, i bought a wireless charger to no avail. something either within the phones board or my old AC adapter had gone wonky, put a new battery in and the same thing began happening after 2 days.
Little back story: A few days ago I was in need of a charge and wasnt near my standard chargers. Noted that my sons little innotab max computer charger was micro USB. I plugged it in and noted how sturdy the cable and thought "all cables should be like this - sturdy and strong". Well, it charged for about 2/3 mins and suddenly the phone died and for a while the phone wouldn't respond to anything - including the 10 second power button hold. Had to reset the phone to make it come back to life. So, I don't use that charger anymore as I *think* there is something "extra" about it ( no idea what ). The lesson learned however, seems to have hurt my phones mUSB slot. It charges with only specific cables now, out of the five I owned ( gather them all up to test them: 1 from work, 1 from car etc ) only 2 work now. Further, my mirco USB drives dont work at all now. I tried them on another phone and they work fine.
As far as I know there is no difference in micro USB cables, but from my issues, it seems there might be. Is there a way to test if its screwed and know for certain? All I have to make the above conclusions are a bunch of different cables / chargers and getting data points.
Bottom line atm: My power bank USB cable and my V-Tech LED cable work. All the rest, including the original 1+ cable don't work.
Looking around locally to see if replacing the slot is a reasonable solution or should consider a new phone.
Hello,
I have a following problem:
Sometimes when I connect my phone to charge it (to 3rd party charger or power bank - warp charger with original cable always works great but no always I have it handy) I get only 200-400 mA charging speed. Funny thing is that if I unplug it and plug back sometimes it goes to normal speed (1200+ mA) sometimes I need to plus/unplug to few times... This is a bit annoying.
Anyone else has this problem/knows how to solve it?
I'm not sure if this may be reason, but I'm using micro USB cables with micro usB -> usb C adapter (some cheap ones from aliexpress) ? But with my old phone (Mi note 2) they worked always ok...
I can't believe Boone responded to this. I'm having the same problem but I'm using good quality cables and not using adapters.
