I9003 Video Playback - Samsung Galaxy SL i9003

Well I did some testing with various different file formats and this is what I observed.
HD video (720p) plays fine if the video is encoded in MPEG-4 codec. (Container doesn't matter, but in my case it was .avi)
Now to the other part, HD (720p) or even regular resolution videos (doesn't matter what resolution) encoded in AVC (x264) on the other hand are not supported by the native video player, it throws up a message saying 'Sorry, this video cannot be played'. However the lower res videos can be played in Rockplayer but there is a slight (noticeable) lag between audio and video. The HD Videos on the other hand play in rockplayer but is un-watchable as the audio goes on but video lags far behind!
I looked around but could not find any mkv files encoded with mpeg-4 codec or any avi files encoded in AVC (x264) just to test them out.
Thus I have come to the conclusion atleast for now, that the I9003 does not play AVC/h264 out of the box in the native player and also is not powerful enough to do software decoding of HD files in Rockplayer. Its a damn shame to not be able to do this as even the x10 can do it quite easily, this is a ripoff by Samsung all the while they claiming that almost everything is identical between the I9000 and I9003 but clearly performance wise there seems to be a vast difference.
Basically it does not play videos like this one for example

Are you able to play this in the native video player? You are on the I9000 right?
Update: Checked with some more files, H264/AVC only seems to be working if the file is an .mp4 file, mkv just does not play on my phone in the native player and even in Rockplayer it plays with too much lag (can only be played in 'Software Decoding' mode, Hardware Decoding mode throws up an error saying 'Cannot be played with system player')
Anybody using a i9003 here who can check video playback and let me know whether mkv files encoded using AVC/h264, 720p or lower res, play perfectly fine or not?

I9000 native player is a beast, can play 720p at high 4.2 and possibly higher

Try mobo player
http://www.moboplayer.com/moboplayer_en.html
it work smoothly with H264/AVC mkv files of Resolution: 1080p (1920x1080)
I tested with 4 such files & i9003 runs it smooth.
Stock video player cannot do it.

Pretty much all of the content I get is 720p h264 in mkv. The i9000 stock player plays it effortlessly, unit doesn't even get warm which means good battery life, one of my favourite things about this phone.

Hmmm I tried your suggestion but to no avail, it plays the same way it does in rockplayer, 720p mkv AVC files play with a heavy lag. And you say you can even manage 1080p on the i9003!
I really can't understand why the stock player refuses to play any MKV file i throw at it! Really sucks that I seem to be the only one with this problem here, even the xperia x10 plays them perfectly fine in the stock player itself! And I thought the galaxy was better than that in this regard...
I have a good suggestion could you guys point me to a link of some 720p file (preferable a small one) encoded using h264 which works on your phones, so I could try it on mine and see if it works or not?
EDIT:- Ok so I have uploaded a file, its a 720p MKV file, its only 5 mb, If you guys could download it onto your phones and let me know if its playing or not i'd really appreciate that,
Thanks!

There you got the solution Go and give your i9003 back and buy a i9000. The SLCD_version sucks in many ways and the normal samoled-version costs less then the new "improved" slcd-version Germany is great for that ****, but you did the wrong choise.

Stock Video player and it plays well on my I9000 no lag good sound good quality picture .

The i9003 has a TI OMAP3630 chip with SGX 530 GPU compared to the i9000's Hummingbird S5PC110 with SGX 540.
However you'd think the 530 would still have plenty of power to decode 720p. Maybe something is different with the codecs in either the software or OMAP hardware.

Lucky you man! I'm facing a problem even with this file! It says unsupported file type when I play with the stock player. Naturally that means that the player does not do hardware decoding for it so its of no use playing it in other players too cause software decoding plays it quite badly with heavy lag.
Any I9003 users out there who can play the video sample attached above? I need to know if it plays or not so I can go and get my phone checked or whatever. @sgsI9003 could you try it out maybe?

I am travelling in2g area and even if I download I cant unzip the file on my phone willneed a computer to do that. What i think is that certain files encoded using certain codec indeed may be creating the problem. Before buying I asled the dealer to play the demo frpm my card using various formats in full hd and few dont play and he installed rock player for those file to play. I suggest we start posting on samsung facebook wall to highlight these issues.

Well as one user earlier mentioned he could play the above sample file with no problems whatsoever on the I9000, so all I wanted to know is if any I9003 user can play the same file or is it only me having this problem.

@zone... yeah even im not able to play your uploaded files properly ..
heres my summary:-
1. stock player - unsupported file type
2. mobo player - soft decoding with a noticable lag(small though)
3. vital player - soft decoding with a noticable lag(small though)
what is going on guys ... its not just your problem now mate! cant play any 720p vids! only dvdrips... even my waka waka 1080p , .mp4 isnt playing!!

Post these issues on samsung india facebook pages.
@mzone ask balagamer to test these file since he is using xxkb3. That might have solved the problem.

What video player are you using. Try VLC that thing will play anything.
Install the codec pack that comes with Kies, or use a community maintained codec pack like CCCP (Combined community codec pack).
I have CCCP installed and videos play without any difficulty in WMP, VLC and MPC

How can I check what hardware codecs are enabled on my phone's GPU?
You can use an App such as Hardware Info: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dama.hardwareinfo

LIST OF DEMANDING Hi10p FILES THAT YOU CAN USE TO TEST YOUR DEVICE (mainly anime as that's what most commonly uses Hi10p)
http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=489663&showfiles=1 This file is fairly demanding at 22.3Mbps bitrate.
Anything from http://coalgirls.wakku.to/ that's 1080p and released in 2013 or later would be 10bit, and would make for a good test. All their files are relatively high bitrate, so it will be a good indicator of the CPU's capabilities with S/W.
If you are willing to waste bandwidth with an even harder test, you could try this: http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=552753 12GB and 10835 kbit/s bitrate.
Unique encoding settings: http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=557914&showfiles=1 movies 1 or 2. This is also 10bit (720p), but with 4:4:4 subsampling (on movies 1 and 2) as opposed to standard 4:2:0 subsampling.
Very, VERY demanding: HEVC 4K 10bit video @ 51.6 Mb/s: http://demo-uhd3d.com/fiche.php?cat=uhd&id=96

Here's an update guys... I just tested out the new Galaxy S5, and it runs 1080p hi10p PERFECTLY. No frame skips in panning scenes. I did not expect a minor update (Snapdragon 801 over an 800) to be able to do it or make much of a difference, but it's now the best mobile device for playing 10 bit video.
It kills the K900's performance in 1080p, as well as other phones using Snapdragon 800. This is the last phone you should ever need with respect to anime viewing. Although I will be waiting for the Snap 805s at the earliest before I change phone again.
That's good news! But have you checked if it can maintain the 1080p Hi10p performance for say an hour long video? It clearly has enough power to render it, but I'm wondering if the frame buffer or queue would die if you played for a video as long as an hour .
Has anyone else been able to try using the Galaxy S5 for extended 1080p Hi10p playback?
Two things:
1) I know most modern smartphones can play 10-bit 720p encoded content quite nicely, but just want to chime in that the Galaxy Note 3 Neo (LTE version) with the hexacore Exynos SoC (dual Cortex-A15, quad Cortex-A7) has no problems with such videos. With my only 10-bit 1080p test video, the phone played it back okay, maybe around like 90%?
2) Toshiba recently announced a new 7" Android tablet called the Excite Go running some type of quad-core Intel chip for $110. Possibly might be the cheapest tablet for on-the-go 10-bit video watching even though the screen resolution is only 1024x600?
Hey CDBrian, maybe you remember me, Arjen de Jong. I am following the Hi10P thread for a long time now.

Awesome, thanks!
I just watched a few minutes of the movie, but in panning and quick movement scenes it lags a bit. I don't if this is because of the bitrate (CRF 17,5) but I'm gonna try another 1080p video.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, but I got the G900F, the international Snapdragon variant.
Yeah, the ZUM 1080p release is 6442 kBit/s 10bit, probably too much.
I believe that the Europe version has the same Qualcomm MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801 @ Quad-core 2.5 GHz Krait 400?

Anyone try to play with MTK6582 1.7/2.0ghz cpu?
Snapdragon 800/801 has almost the same CPU spec even in antutu benchmark, and for Snapdragon 805 unless it support 10-bit hardware decoding I doubt that it can smoothly playback 15mbps hi10p.
The hopes are on
MTK6595
Atom Z3560/Z3580 with MX Player + Intel optimized codec.
A chinese review come out for snapdragon 805.

conclusion the cpu of 805 is almost as same level as 801
a.k.a no hope for smooth hi10p playback using snapdragon 805

What exactly do you mean "which be suited for 10 bits?" ??

if you mean smooth playback on all scenes for high quality 10-bit 1080p encoded with more than 8mbit/s
NO
Maybe quad core intel atom with software sse3 codec installed (MX Player got this option) or MTK6595T (This chip got most of the power allocated to CPU) can do. Not tested myself
Just wanted to add to the pool of knowledge here.
10bit 720p seems to be working perfectly so far on my Note 3. I only tested a couple of videos, but I have yet to see any lag, even during panning scenes. The videos tested were: Jojo Stardust Crusaders (some episodes, by Horriblesubs), Soul Eater Not (some episodes, also by Horriblesubs) and Nisekoi (one episode, by FFF). It is not overclocked, and I am running the X-Note rom. I disable multitasking and kill all processes just to be safe before playback (unsure if this is even needed). It is playing in H/W+.
I tried some 1080p 10bit videos and it was awful. I have no idea how the guy with the S5 managed to watch it. The Note 3 has the same hardware, so maybe the videos he tried were of a lower bitrate...? I don't know.
HTC One - MX ver. 1.7.28
I've got an issue with 10bit playback on my HTC One. I've been using the combination of Serviio, BubbleUPnP, and MX Player to stream my videos over my home network. It has been working flawlessly, until I try to play a 10bit video with subtitles. Over the network, the subtitles do not show up at all. If I transfer the video to my device and then try to play it, I get subtitles but the video becomes a bit choppy and annoying to watch. This only seems to happen on the 10bit videos. I'm not sure what I can do to get things working.
I am on a completely stock HTC One with Android version 4.4.2, HTC Sense 6.0, and using MX Player version 1.7.28.
Just for the sake of completeness, here is a MediaInfo dump of one of the episodes that is giving me this issue:

Some mixed news on the Hi10p front. With the Tegra K1 SOC in the Xiaomi Mipad I can get smooth playback on Hi10p 1080p mkv with high bitrates with acceleration but I have to use VLC beta for Android. MXplayer is crashing all over the place on the Mipad. Here's hoping MXplayer devs can support the Tegra K1.
For reference the video file used for testing was an Anime with flac audio:

99% of all Horriblesubs files are 8bit.
@Fenrir007 did you enable speedup tricks? When playing a video: menu -> play -> use speedup tricks.
Also, settings -> decoder -> CPU code limit -> be sure to force 4 cores.

@raitono Without looking further into how Serviio works, my guess is because for 10bit files, Serviio is first transcoding the 10bit video to 8bit before passing it via UPnP to Bubble. My assumption is that while transcoding, it only passes through the audio, and drops the subtitle stream. As to why it might do this, my guess is because Serviio doesn't know how to handle .ass subtitles, since it's not a commercial standard.
The CBM file you have is 8bit, so there would be no need for Serviio to transcode it. In that case, Serviio probably just passes the file as-is to Bubble.
I watch a lot of anime, and I'm a power user of anidb.net so I understand where you are coming from!

[Question]H/W+ for VC-1?

Hallo,
H/W+ works properly for H262/3/4 videos but WMV3/VC1 seem to work only in S/W. I'm using a Samsung GS3 (I9300) with CM11. Exynos4412/Mali400 should do VC-1 hardware video decoding (not sure about the exact profile though).
Is there anything known about VC1 hardware decoding issues? Does it work for anyone else?

[Bug Report] Double Audio Track problem

Hello guys,
i would like to ask you for help with this problem.
I have Xtreamer SideWinder4 on Android 4.2.2, there is this specs:
Chipset:
Processor: Dual-Core AML8726 Mx-D (AMLOGIC) ARM Cortex-A9 dual core/1.5GHZ
Memory:
FLASH: 8GB NAND Flash (32M bit nor flash+32GbitMLC flash)
SDRAM: 1GB DDR3
1. If i switch audio track in mkv movie, then it play both audio together. It´s mean first audio track (usualy Enghlish) and second one(for which i want switch) together. I have tried some things to solve it out like tick on/off s/w audio, play with s/w or h/w, with or without custom codecs but nothing helps. If i play the movie with s/w then audio is ok (it just play selected audio), but video is not smooth and it´s very slow. If i switch for h/w than video is great, but there is the problem with double audio.
2. I can´t use h/w+ as it says everytime " this file can´t be played with h/w+". I don´t know why. I am using Mx player on my tablet(with cortex A9 quad core) as well and there is no any problem with it. I can play there movie with h/w+ and switch audio track with no problem.
Any ideas please how to resolve it?
Thanks in advance.

I have tried already, but no change. If i use s/w for audio and h/w for video then it play only first audio track even i have switched to second audio track. If i use h/w for both(video and audio) then it play both audio track together.

Yes, this option i have tried as well, but doesn´t help to my problem.

Hello guys,
i would like to ask you for help with this problem.

Here is the movie info, but i have same problem with all movies as well. I can play only first audio track in each movie with no problem. If i want switch it, than there is problem.
Mx player show me all audio tracks which are include in movie and i can select any of them.
By me the main problem is that i can´t use h/w+. On my tablet i am using h/w+ and there is no problem like on this Xtreamer.

Have you enabled H/W audio track selecectable in Settings》Decoder..?
Try again after disabling it. It may cause problem in some devices. It's better to keep it disabled in your case since you have problem only in H/W mode.
If it's still not working, Enable S/W audio in Settings 》Decoder & Try to play it in H/W decoder. By this you can play video in H/W & audio in S/W.
Try the both combination (H/W audio track selecectable is disabled & S/W audio is enabled)
Note:
After changing the settings, when it ask to resume don't resume & select start over. Else it will use the previously used decoder settings.

Hi, thanks for reply.
I have tried the options what you wrote me, but no change. In H/W decoder video play great, but it´s play only first audio track, even if i select second one still play the first.
In S/W decoder audio play great, i can select audio track with no problem, but video doesn´t play smooth. It play very slow.
So i really don´t know what else it can be.

have you tried the thinks that I have mentioned in my previous reply?
Your reply is same as what your have reported earlier.
1. Have you tried the same after disabling H/W audio track selecectable from Settings 》Decoder ?
2. Have you tried in H/W mode after enabling S/W audio from Settings 》Decoder ? (First enable S/W audio then change the track)
3. Try Both together.
As I have already told don't resume after changing anything on settings 》decoder. Else it will use the same settings when you have used earlier.

can you post the screenshot of video properties window (after enabling more)?
It will be better if you can post the logs as well.
Previous log doesn't contains any playback information. Logs must be collected immediately after playback.
Just play the video that has issue, if you are getting double audio close the video & Immediately go to Help >> Bug Report
Save the logs & attach here.

Hello,
I seem to have this same issue. For video files with multiple audio streams, if I select H/W decoding I cannot switch between audio tracks. I didn't investigate which audio track MX Player is processing. Probably it's the first one it can find in the file.
If I switch to S/W decoding, this problem goes away (i.e. I can switch audio tracks), however the S/W decoding is very slow and watching the video in this mode is impossible on my device. Also, I absolutely need the H/W decoding for sound because my device is doing DTS and AC3 multichannel passthrough for my AV receiver and 5.1 audio system.
I'm using the ARM v7 codec (auto requested by MX Player). My device is a HiMedia Q5 with an ARM Cortex9 core.
Many thanks for any updates!
Best regards,
Marian.

One more update for this one: I have the same problem with embedded subtitle tracks. When in H/W decoding MX Player doesn't play, nor can I select embedded subtitle streams. This, however, works in S/W decoding (just like the audio track selection).
Please also note that external subtitles work just fine (in both S/W and H/W decoding modes).
Can we get a confirmation of this bug in
http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/mx-player/sticky-running-list-feature-requests-t2718297
?
Thank you,
Marian.
