MX Player 10-bit Video and HEVC Discussion
Back on our old Google Groups forum, we had a long thread of users sharing and discussing their experiences with 10-bit video playback, HEVC playback, device capabilities, and other interesting related topics.
This thread will be a continuation of that discussion. The original thread can be found here:

If you have anything you want to share relating to 10-bit playback, hardware support, and MX Player, please join the discussion!
How can I check what hardware codecs are enabled on my phone's GPU?
You can use an App such as Hardware Info: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dama.hardwareinfo
My device is playing Hi10p really poorly, even though it's a very new/powerful phone! What can I do?
CDB-Man said:
1) h.264 AVC Hi10p can only be played on HW+ for Tegra devices. No exceptions. All non-Tegra devices must use SW for h.264 AVC Hi10p.
2) When using SW Mode:
--> a) Settings -> Decoder -> CPU core limit -> Set to max of whatever your device is
--> b) Settings -> Decoder -> Use speedup tricks

LIST OF DEMANDING Hi10p FILES THAT YOU CAN USE TO TEST YOUR DEVICE (mainly anime as that's what most commonly uses Hi10p)
http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=489663&showfiles=1 This file is fairly demanding at 22.3Mbps bitrate.
Anything from http://coalgirls.wakku.to/ that's 1080p and released in 2013 or later would be 10bit, and would make for a good test. All their files are relatively high bitrate, so it will be a good indicator of the CPU's capabilities with S/W.
If you are willing to waste bandwidth with an even harder test, you could try this: http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=552753 12GB and 10835 kbit/s bitrate.
Unique encoding settings: http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=557914&showfiles=1 movies 1 or 2. This is also 10bit (720p), but with 4:4:4 subsampling (on movies 1 and 2) as opposed to standard 4:2:0 subsampling.
Very, VERY demanding: HEVC 4K 10bit video @ 51.6 Mb/s: http://demo-uhd3d.com/fiche.php?cat=uhd&id=96

Now, a very useful summary by @Dante of the Inferno of the current required specs to successfully play 10-bit files on Android!
Last updated: 2015-08-24
Dante of the Inferno said:
Hi10p Minimum Hardware Requirements:
x86 Architecture:
720p:
2.0+ GHz Dual Core CPU with integrated graphics (2006 or later)
2.2+ GHz Single Core CPU (up to 30 fps and low bit rate)
1080p:
Intel Atom Z3770 (Bay Trail) with integrated graphics (2014 or later)
ARM Architecture:
720p:
Snapdragon 600 SoC (2013 or later) - based on quad-core 1.9 GHz Krait 300 CPU and Adreno 320 GPU
1080p:
Exynos 7 Octa 7420 (2015 or later) - based on ARM v8
Amlogic S812 - based on ARM A9 with octo-core Mali 450 GPU
Nvidia Tegra K1
Snapdragon 810 (generally should work, but probably only for lower bitrate files)

Re: 10 bit anime viewers please comment to make this message visible.

Here's an update guys... I just tested out the new Galaxy S5, and it runs 1080p hi10p PERFECTLY. No frame skips in panning scenes. I did not expect a minor update (Snapdragon 801 over an 800) to be able to do it or make much of a difference, but it's now the best mobile device for playing 10 bit video.
It kills the K900's performance in 1080p, as well as other phones using Snapdragon 800. This is the last phone you should ever need with respect to anime viewing. Although I will be waiting for the Snap 805s at the earliest before I change phone again.
That's good news! But have you checked if it can maintain the 1080p Hi10p performance for say an hour long video? It clearly has enough power to render it, but I'm wondering if the frame buffer or queue would die if you played for a video as long as an hour .

Has anyone else been able to try using the Galaxy S5 for extended 1080p Hi10p playback?

Two things:
1) I know most modern smartphones can play 10-bit 720p encoded content quite nicely, but just want to chime in that the Galaxy Note 3 Neo (LTE version) with the hexacore Exynos SoC (dual Cortex-A15, quad Cortex-A7) has no problems with such videos. With my only 10-bit 1080p test video, the phone played it back okay, maybe around like 90%?
2) Toshiba recently announced a new 7" Android tablet called the Excite Go running some type of quad-core Intel chip for $110. Possibly might be the cheapest tablet for on-the-go 10-bit video watching even though the screen resolution is only 1024x600?

Hey CDBrian, maybe you remember me, Arjen de Jong. I am following the Hi10P thread for a long time now.
I saw your last message about playing a long Hi10P video on the Galaxy S5.
I have got a S5 and I'm going to try and watch the movie Eve no Jikan from ZUM in 1080p on the device.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Awesome, thanks!

I just watched a few minutes of the movie, but in panning and quick movement scenes it lags a bit. I don't if this is because of the bitrate (CRF 17,5) but I'm gonna try another 1080p video.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, but I got the G900F, the international Snapdragon variant.

Yeah, the ZUM 1080p release is 6442 kBit/s 10bit, probably too much.
I believe that the Europe version has the same Qualcomm MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801 @ Quad-core 2.5 GHz Krait 400?

Did you get a chance to try any other videos?

Anyone try to play with MTK6582 1.7/2.0ghz cpu?
Snapdragon 800/801 has almost the same CPU spec even in antutu benchmark, and for Snapdragon 805 unless it support 10-bit hardware decoding I doubt that it can smoothly playback 15mbps hi10p.
The hopes are on
MTK6595
Atom Z3560/Z3580 with MX Player + Intel optimized codec.

A chinese review come out for snapdragon 805.
www[dot]igao7[dot]com/s5-ltea-preview.html
conclusion the cpu of 805 is almost as same level as 801
a.k.a no hope for smooth hi10p playback using snapdragon 805

I probably be planning to get the Samsung Note 4 this September (been using iPhone very long time).
Does anyone know which be suited for 10 bits?
Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 (SM-N910S)
Exynos 5433 (SM-N910C)

if you mean smooth playback on all scenes for high quality 10-bit 1080p encoded with more than 8mbit/s
NO
Maybe quad core intel atom with software sse3 codec installed (MX Player got this option) or MTK6595T (This chip got most of the power allocated to CPU) can do. Not tested myself

Just wanted to add to the pool of knowledge here.
10bit 720p seems to be working perfectly so far on my Note 3. I only tested a couple of videos, but I have yet to see any lag, even during panning scenes. The videos tested were: Jojo Stardust Crusaders (some episodes, by Horriblesubs), Soul Eater Not (some episodes, also by Horriblesubs) and Nisekoi (one episode, by FFF). It is not overclocked, and I am running the X-Note rom. I disable multitasking and kill all processes just to be safe before playback (unsure if this is even needed). It is playing in H/W+.
I tried some 1080p 10bit videos and it was awful. I have no idea how the guy with the S5 managed to watch it. The Note 3 has the same hardware, so maybe the videos he tried were of a lower bitrate...? I don't know.

HTC One - MX ver. 1.7.28
I've got an issue with 10bit playback on my HTC One. I've been using the combination of Serviio, BubbleUPnP, and MX Player to stream my videos over my home network. It has been working flawlessly, until I try to play a 10bit video with subtitles. Over the network, the subtitles do not show up at all. If I transfer the video to my device and then try to play it, I get subtitles but the video becomes a bit choppy and annoying to watch. This only seems to happen on the 10bit videos. I'm not sure what I can do to get things working.
I am on a completely stock HTC One with Android version 4.4.2, HTC Sense 6.0, and using MX Player version 1.7.28.
Just for the sake of completeness, here is a MediaInfo dump of one of the episodes that is giving me this issue:

Some mixed news on the Hi10p front. With the Tegra K1 SOC in the Xiaomi Mipad I can get smooth playback on Hi10p 1080p mkv with high bitrates with acceleration but I have to use VLC beta for Android. MXplayer is crashing all over the place on the Mipad. Here's hoping MXplayer devs can support the Tegra K1.

99% of all Horriblesubs files are 8bit.
@Fenrir007 did you enable speedup tricks? When playing a video: menu -> play -> use speedup tricks.
Also, settings -> decoder -> CPU code limit -> be sure to force 4 cores.

@raitono Without looking further into how Serviio works, my guess is because for 10bit files, Serviio is first transcoding the 10bit video to 8bit before passing it via UPnP to Bubble. My assumption is that while transcoding, it only passes through the audio, and drops the subtitle stream. As to why it might do this, my guess is because Serviio doesn't know how to handle .ass subtitles, since it's not a commercial standard.
The CBM file you have is 8bit, so there would be no need for Serviio to transcode it. In that case, Serviio probably just passes the file as-is to Bubble.
I watch a lot of anime, and I'm a power user of anidb.net so I understand where you are coming from!

Video converting settings?

anybody know the optimal video setting and audio settings for HD videos for the captivate? I want to know the best possible setting to max out the screen and audio
Captivate can playback 720p @ 60 fps with high bit rate h264/x264 High Profile. On captivate fluid and sharp there is no words to describe awesomeness.
I did not try 1080p , i mostly transcode music videos to 720p @29.97 fps (4000kbs) and AAC audio at 160kbs.
If its a movie keeping kbs to (500~700) and resolution ~720x400.
If you have ts/tp/mpg/vob source and know what your doing you can encode to 59.94 fps. But if your not video enthusiast you don't need that.
MKV,MP4 containers work.

Ty, thanks for the info, very helpful
As I've said in the other ten threads about this, there is no point in encoding HD videos for this phone since the screen resolution is only 480.
From my Samsung Captivate

[Bug] Embedded subtitles in mkv loaded, but not displayed.

Latest stable pro build, I have activated the option to auto-load subtitles (both embedded and not). Starting a random mkv, the subtitles are not displayed. Tapping the subtitle icon shows the subtitle is active (checked). Unchecking and re-checking the subtitle displays it. Resuming same file displays the files, so it seems only the initial load doesn't load the subs.
Basically:
Code:
load file -> subs not loaded -> reload subs -> exit -> resume -> subs load
-> start over -> subs not loaded
load file -> subs not loaded -> exit -> resume -> subs load!
-> start over -> subs not loaded
I noticed that after upgrading to the newly released version.
Probably related, didn't see it because it was posed as a question...
Hmm, this sounds like a subtitle caching issue... not sure what the developer may have changed in this regard between versions a few days ago.
Also, mind posting your file's mediainfo?
It happens with about any recent 10bit .mkv

Also, after switching to S/W subs, only exiting and resuming helps, reloading the subs themselves does not. Though this is probably because the CPU is busy decoding 10bit video.
Speaking of which, I just tried playing an 8bit mkv and everything works. So it looks like a caching issue indeed, with the cache taking a while to fill with when decoding 10bit on my CPU. Resuming seems to have some sort of different cache handling, so that subs can appear.
I propose an option along the lines of "wait until queues are full before starting playback (all/10bit only)"

Would you send me a sample video clip?
Video pixel format is irrelevant to subtitle handling at all. And cannot reproduce this issue even on my oldest device.
It's not about pixel format itself, but about the load on the CPU while using the S/W decoder. At least I think so.
I sent you the link to the file per PM.
@bleu8888 I recently sent you a PM with a few examples of the first few lines of subtitles not loading for SW, with sample files. Check it out! It appears to be a similar issue to this thread.
For reference, the part from that PM that is relevant here:
CDB-Man said:
However I found a different issue: http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=425256 For this episode, sometimes when I play the video from the beginning from the menu, the first 1 to 3 lines don't get displayed. Lines after that are fine. In this case, the very first line "What's he doing?" gets dropped the most often. Clearing font cache generally doesn't make a difference. Even if I seek back to that part, the first line is dropped. The old build (1.7.28) didn't have this issue with the first lines.
Hmm, seems the first few lines also get dropped for this too, similar to the above: http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=358158
Seems that this also includes typesetting if typesetting is the first subtitle. For example episode 18: http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=440124
The sign on the door should say "It's Suguha's room". The first few lines at around time 00:10 also don't show.
It also includes kareoke subs. See Girls und Panzer OVA6 v2 [1984FB83] here: ftp://ftp.actions-micro.com/CDB_Test_Videos/
ftp username: public ftp password welcome2014!
The first 1 or 2 lines of the opening kareoke do not load.
Checked more into it, and it seems that for files where SW is needed, there's a high chance that the first few lines (including typeset) are dropped and not shown. (Nichijou is 8bit so HW+. It's first lines show up. ie line #1 "Okay, that's all for today")

I'd also like to confirm this.
I tried watching Hanayamata 04 on my Nexus 7 2nd. The first few lines were cut before displaying the rest. (A few other 10bit files I tried were the same.)
I also noticed the Karaoke seemed to be a bit slow in rendering, at least from my perspective, but wasn't out of sync afaict.
On another note, if there's a long delay (say a few seconds) between the beginning of the video and the first subtitled line (E.g. Glasslip 04), it'll load fine.

Thanks, the test build fixes the issue for me!
I have a possibly related issue.... MX Player works just fine on my phone (Galaxy Note 2 running an ICS-based custom rom) but on my recently-purchased tablet (Medion Lifetab S10334 / MD 98811, running stock Kitkat) trying to play the same file (an anime episode saved as .mkv with embedded soft subtitles) the subs will only display when the UI shows. Any suggestions?

What is the type of embedded subtitle?
Also try Android 4.0 compatible mode under Settings > Player.

I hadn't even considered the compatible mode, seeing as it works just fine on my phone without but that actually did it. Thanks a lot. (subs are ssa, by the way - not that it matters much since the issue is resolved for me but just to leave no loose ends...)

[BUG] H/W+ Decoder Displays Blocks

When I want to play a 576p (16:10 anamorphic) PAL file, I get these blocks on my device.
i.imgur.com/zFFauHW.jpg
Sound is fine. If I switch to S/W it hiccups but without the blocks. I can't use the H/W decoder because it's on my NAS. When I download this file onto my device, it plays fine in H/W mode, in VLC and in my stock player. I have multiple files like this, but all have blocks. PC plays it fine. I don't get these blocks when I try to play files with an 572p anamorphic PAL setting. I've tried tweaking my Handbrake settings, but I get these blocks every time, only in MX.
I'm using the latest MX Player and custom codec on a Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 with Android 2.3.6

Would you share one of your videos?

The original files are about 800-1000 MB, so here is a 50,7 MB (68 seconds) sample. Same problem happens

Are you using stock ROM? I've tested your video in my Galaxy S which has Hummingbird platform and running Android 2.3.6 just like yours.
But cannot reproduce this issue. I will try again if I have a chance to try Galaxy Tab. For the meantime, please use HW decoder instead.
BTW, custom codec may not compatible with test version (beta version). Does it happen even with default codec?
Thanks.

The original ROM when I bought it had Android 2.2, but I updated it via Samsung Kies to 2.3.6. With the original ROM, H/W+ videos were impossible to play.
I have no idea what you mean with beta version, but I've tried it with and without the custom codec. Same result, even when removing the one(s) downloaded from the Play store

I've tried a few, but the blocks still appear.
About a year ago I had a similar video that displayed that problem but I didn't think to report it at the time. Also a PAL anamorphic widescreen video

So, there's no blocking with HW mode when the files is stored on device?
Also curious, does HW+ work or does it block?
bleu, think it might be to do with the 25.000 fps? This is just a guess on my part.

There is no blocking in HW mode. I cant test it when not stored on my device because HW only works with mp4
H/W+ only blocks with these videos on my NAS, external sd and internal storage
I have other 25 fps videos that play just fine, same handbrake settings
After encoding all my files, I found one file that didn't block like the others. It uses the same handbrake settings except for a extra 2 pixel crop on the right side (36 instead of 34)
Also I noticed something missing that does occur in every blocking file: the Original display aspect ratio is missing in this one. Might that be the reason of the blocking?

I've tried this video on many devices but not Micromax Canvas.
But can't reproduce this issue, looks like a device specific issue.
It happen with some 2-3 files only .other files are working properly.
I can confirm that I'm facing this problem too.
I'm playing a movie and it's going fine. Then I pause & minimise it to do something else. When I go back to movie, the screen is dark and it doesn't play. Sometimes only the audio plays and the subtitles roll by, but video remains black. Sometimes if I press the "go to beginning" button, video resumes, but if I try to seek forward, it goes black again. Then I switch to sw codec, and everything's fine.
Using default codec on lollipop 5.1, Nexus 10 (manta).

Problem:
Any media file that has HE-AAC or HE-AAC/LC audio codec loads for more than 30 seconds before playing without audio. The volume is on proper range (that is 12). You cannot forward the video when this happen. If you gesture your to forward, time to forward appears but after you stop sliding the frame will go back to your last frame before gesturing.
Conclusion:
Any video with HE-AAC or so codec fails to play. HE-AACv2 plays smoothly, AAC/LC and other AAC Family codec plays nice. Only HE-AAC won't play. Already tried everything I could but nothing works. Even if I use other type of Cellphone/Tablet, GPU, CPU, or different android OS version, it's still the same Hoping you'll kindly fix this problem. Thank you.
