[Q] Good tweaks/mod especially multitasking?? - myTouch 4G General

My Mytouch4g is currently unrooted and does all kinds of stuff I need it to do especially cause I have launcher pro and all sorts of apps to tweak out the feature. But the one thing that's missing that I find really annoying is it lacks simple task switching multitasking. I hate having to swipe down that Notifications drawer to get to "Recent apps" to switch back between my gTalk and browser or the radio or whatever. Sometimes I'll have my Tvlistings open to check out a channel then get a text message and gtalk and I'll want to switch between apps much easier.
Is there any rom, apps, kernels, tweaks out there that support this? This phone is so powerful I'm sure its capable. My ipad 1 had only 256mb and had way sub-par multitasking than this phone (in terms of memory and things running in the background) but it was still decent. If there's some app like "backgrounder" or something where you hit the HOME button twice to bring up recent apps or something, that would solve everything!
Any ideas?
Also, there are SO many roms and mods on the development page I don't even know what they mean. Which one is considered the "Best" right now in terms of everything working without bugs and lots of performance flexibility and customization? CM7?
I'm fairly noob still so bear with me.

Hold down the home button.

U can root ur phone and just flash a custom kernal. This way, u still have the stock rom and speed beyond what ur seeing right now, especially with faux's new kernals. Just be sure to make a back up from the beginning and u may do pretty much whatever u like as far as switching between roms and back to stock if u don't like it. But try wave launcher from the market. It would solve the quick access prob. U can launch any app in a snap, from any window. Not just recent apps like holding the home key does.

Thanks! I just got wave launcher.
How do you know which kernal is the best? I have heard of faux from some youtube video but other than overclock, I'm not sure what makes one better than another.

Stock Android on Epic

I just want to be sure I am not missing anything - there are not any Epic roms out yet right? to put it a different way, every single epic owner on the planet is currently using the Sprint/Samsung factory version of Android 2.1, yes?
Have spent a number of hours on xda and google, but wanted to be sure I was correct on this one.
Just really anxious to get away from Touchwiz, it doesn't even really feel like Android.

You're correct, no custom roms yet. In the meantime you could install a different launcher such as launcher pro and adw launcher to give your phone a more aosp look

Honestly, after I installed ADW Launcher, Beautiful Widgets, rooted the phone, and uninstalled all the Sprint crap with Root Manager / Titanium Backup, I'm actually happy with what's left of Touch Wiz. The dialer / contacts / integration etc is actually pretty nice. My phone looks like stock 2.2 now, but has a few nice improvements.

Agreed. I think touchwiz is like a double edgd sword. One the one hand it has a ton of features and usability improvements, on thbe other hand it looks horrible. Launcher pro gets rid of the ugly and adds even more features.
I wouldn't want stock android even if it were available.

Kinetic scrolling from galaxy s devices on asop style roms?

OK, not really sure if this is the right place to post this but here goes
I was using a friends Samsung android phone the other day and I was wondering if it would be possible to port the iPhone style 'whiplash' effect they've added to a normal rom?
If you don't know what I'm on about then just go to your settings menu and try to scroll upwards from the top or downwards from the bottom, with a normal rom nothing will happen. The thing I'm on about is when you try to do this and it goes up a bit and then flies back down.
So yeah, my main question is can this be ported to work generally in most menus, or is it an app specific thing they've added?
Thanks in advance guys!
I'm on an HTC hero at the moment using this rom-

Gotta say, I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned this is reviews. It's one reason I don't want an aosp rom on my Captivate. It's definitely not app specific because it works in 3rd party apps as well.

Ok, so if its not app specific then could someone find out if this is just a few lines of code that can be pulled and added to an asop rom, or if it's more compacted than that?

what/where/how is ICS better then GB ???

Then what's so great about Gingerbread? You can find most of the GB advantages in Froyo custom ROMs. Or most of FROYO custom ROMs in Eclair custom ROMs. This kinda defeats the point of the question, right?

Not everyone is gonna like it, but I've been running various ICS roms since it came out, and I can't go back to GB. To be honest, when I use a phone with GB now, I immediately think "eww..." in my head. It just feels really ghetto compared to ICS.

Addons are now optonal instead of mandatory to get a good experience. That's a huge improvement already.
Previous I wouldn't upgrade to other roms cause it took forever to add everything back. Now things just work out of the box. It's kinda like going to a mac from a PC.

My company pays for my laptops so money doesnt matter. Sometimes you pay more than twice the money for less hardware if you really look at it.
I'm just saying that its easier to get up and running with a mac than a pc (and to try and bring it back to the original topic) just like it is easier to get up and running with ics than gb
Disagree with both.
maybe you've never really given both a honest try.
I have given both a honest try. That is irrelevant anyways

ICS...UGH Issues

I just upgraded to ICS. So far I am having a few really annoying usability issues. I was hoping someone might have ideas:
1. Things seem more laggy. Ive read enough posts about this to know I need to wait and see for a couple of days and then consider a reset.
2. Power Saving Widget - I am a heavy user of this widget. It fit very nicely on the homescreen before, and you could easily scroll through all the buttons when needed. Now its HUGE and I cannot fit it on my homescreen. Has anyone found a way to resize it?
3. My Direct Dial / DIrect Message Shortcuts. They all got wiped out. Now when I add them back to the homescreen they have annoying labels (like "mobile") across the faces of my contact pictures. Any way to remove them? No point in having the pictures when the word labels block them out completely anyway!
Are you on the official ics 4.04 room or a custom rom? Are you using the the original launcher or something like apex or nova?
If you long press the widget it should let you resize with 4 dots... I'm not using touchwiz so i may be wrong on that

I went from stock GB to stock ICS. I totally agree with your assessment. What were they thinking on the power widget? The old one worked great, you could shift it sideways if you wanted to see the other controls. This half screen thing is crap.
Mine has been much more laggy and I have had TouchWiz force close a lot. Never had Touchwiz FC even once that with GB.
Overall seems like someone left my ice cream sandwitch out in the sun and the whole thing has turned into a mushy melty mess.

Instead of whining , work out your problems and learn how to troubleshoot..
1st,how did you install the stock ICS ?
2nd,did you do a proper wiping and cleaning before that ?
3rd,did you try a stock or custom recovery resets and wipe after the update ?
Stock ICS now on my SR is smooth and I have zero problems , But I admit that GB is a bit faster(smoother) , but just a bit.........

I'm usually pretty good at troubleshooting. Wondering how you know what troubleshooting I've already gone through?
1. Installed from stock GB to ICS via kies. GB was rooted but with stock recovery. Did not un-root before update.
2. Did clear cache before the Kies update. Removed several apps that are easy to reinstall. Didn't and don't want to have to do a factory reset. What else should I have cleaned?
3. After having issues, cleared cache again. Using stock recovery for now.
If you have any ideas how I should proceed, I'm all ears.
Seems wierd but if I have the "agenda" widget on a home screen, things get all flakey.
Thanks.

clean phone is nice, its not as sticky afterwards
to flash stock read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398
After the upgrade via Kies the camera on my Galaxy Skyrocked doesn’t work. There is only a message “unfortunately the camera has stopped” My phone has stock room and its not rooted.
Any advice will be welcome. Factory reset doesn’t fix the bug.
In all fairness, while this forum and its members are great exactly because they can give help like this, I dont think to get a functional OS on my phone I should need to be flashin, rooting or anything like that. Im still a novice and I am not comfortable doing those things. I did exactly as instructed by Samsung Kies and ended up with a phone whose functionality is below par and certainly below where it was. Its very frustrating.
I love all the suggestions, but at this point I just dont feel capable of doing some of these things.
Plus some of the things like the labels across people's faces on my Direct Dial shortcuts is just an ICS feature. Little things like those Direct Dial/Message photo shortcuts were such a cool part of Android, and now with labels across them there isnt even a point in having those pictures. Changes like this are very detrimental IMO, and I still have seen very little regarding the benefits/tradeoffs of the ICS platform...

Everyone's going to really like this one. I'd recommend firing up kernel tuner and getting both processors running and she'll be as smooth as a baby's butt. You'll notice when you first start, the Touchwiz Launcher will FC a couple of times but then never again. There is also a weather app preinstalled on the home screen you'll need to delete & relaunch. (That's what's messing with Touchwiz I would assume.) The only other thing, and this is MY blasted fault, is the 4.2.2 JB Keyboard I put in. Would have been great but FC's all over the place when applied. Just use root cleaner to get rid of it. May have to reboot after that too. ALL VERY minor issues and quick little fixes.

What is the "Soft Keyboard Fix"? Does that delete the 4.2.2 keyboard or replace it? Steps to flash, or just flash ROM, GAPPS, fix one after another then restart, or restart in between each one?

I was a bit foggy wasn't I? The keyboard fix is just to get it rotating properly and actually popping up when it should without going to inputs and turning off the hardware one. That JB keyboard I put in has worked for me before & It's great when it does but seems to have a personality problems with some ROMs....this being one of them. I included Root Cleaner and it will uninstall system apps in one click. Just use that to dump it.
The installation process I kinda take for granted. I ALWAYS flash the ROM and let it settle in. Then I go back for the Gapps & boot back up and do their intro & sign-ups. Then I go back & run any included patches that come with a ROM. Personally, I've never had any issues doing it that way.
Butch....I don't know about those spellings. I've not had a chance to use everything yet.

Maybe a Dalvik flush and a set permissions in recovery?

No that wouldn't do it. I had to myself because it was causing me issues too. I did reboot right afterwards though. Might try clearing dalvik & reflashing your Gapps if worse comes to worse.
That JB Keyboard is a stinker though. That's the last I try that thru a ROM. It's a GREAT keyboard but never seems to work right unless it comes directly from the Playstore. You should grab it from there sometimes & give it a whirl.
Yup yup i reflashed and it works now...dal cache wipe was probably the answer thanks again man

You're going to like it! Seems solid as a danged rock. The developer did a wonderful job with it.
And WELCOME ABOARD!!

So far it is running very smoothly. I have all my apps installed, have everything all set up the way I like. Only problems I have had have been onscreen keyboards. The Xperia keyboard wouldn't work at all, just FC. Neither the Samsung keyboard nor the AOSP keyboard will do trace (like Swype), they only work touching each key. The AOSP keyboard will show the trace, but just not enter anything in the field unless I touch each key separately. I wish I could get the trace to work on something as I'm so used to Swype, but I have been reluctant to install Swype unless I just have to do so.
I've set Kernel Tuner up with both cores running 1296/192 and Badass governor, NOOP I/O and 2048 SD cache. So far so good, won't know any battery stats for a couple of days, I think.
I checked mine & it's doing the same as yours Fuzi, so I just went ahead & used Root Cleaner & uninstalled Xperia & Xperia Chinese. I thought that might clear up the issue but afraid not. If I were you I'd go ahead & install Swype on top of it and see if it will activate. Of course if you're where you can just talk, tap the microphone & just dictate into it. It's cool as CRAP for texting, notepad, Playstore...all that stuff. I understand how it is to miss a function you've grown to love though.
