[Q] Manufacturer UI - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering: What is the deal with the UI? I've read that it has a custom UI over Honeycomb, other places have said it doesn't, and quite frankly, I can't distinguish a difference between it and Honeycomb through the videos/pictures. Can anyone clarify?

Was thinking the same thing, looks to me like there isn't a diff launcher?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk

I wonder if it comes from the fact that they had a custom UI when the prototypes were running froyo? It looks like stock HC from what i've seen as well.

I read somewhere that it was just a wallpaper and could be disable so that you could use the HC default look and feel. Can someone who has one try this and confirm?
By the way on a side note, I have been reading posts on the HTC EVO pages for over 6 months now but this is my first post on XDA. I'm really excited about this product. I was thinking of purchasing the Xoom but now I'm waiting on the TF101 with dock. My wife has the iPad but that is not for me.

It's basically stock.has a few extra wall papers and a few apps other than that its stock.same music player. Same everything

Sounds good then. I was on the fence before. I really wanted one but if it wasn't stock honeycomb, I wouldn't have been as happy. Fine though if they just decided to add a couple things in that don't actually change the experience. Now it just needs to come out!!

a bonus is the polaris office for free. I think the guys are right, just some bundled software. I opted away from xoom also. saved 100gbp also.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk

Yes it's like stock. The only extras are:
-Pre loaded background
-Pre loaded weather and time/date widgets
-Pre loaded homescreen icons
-Pre loaded asus apps
If you delete/remove those from the screen, it's stock honeycomb.

The home/back/multitask icons aren't stock either. I liked the stock icons, but I can live with it. I'm sure a theme will come around.

[REQ] TouchWiz Rom Port

i have been trying to port the SG2 Dump (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1048960) to no avail. I have about giiven up as i am a amateur developer. if any experienced devs can try that would be awesome.
Motorola Droid 3 port would be also awesome, but I am also amateur..

I would be interested in a Touchwiz port as well. Mostly just for the puzzle lock and the messaging app.
If you are interested in TouchWiz,why don't you buy a galaxy s2?
You actually WANT Touchwiz? *mind explodes*
Fun fact: not everyone dislikes TW or likes Sense.
now let me get this straight !
you want 2 replace sense with touchwiz ??? ! ?
please tell me that I got this wrong pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez
I like Touch Wiz better than Sense as well. It looks more like vanilla Android minus the horizontal app drawer. I can't stand the new version of Sense. Its not optimized and it has too much eye candy to apease the mainstream user. In my opinion, Touch Wiz is the more polished UI. We all know its more optimized.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
i would love to see this happen too, tw is really clean and seems like it would run smooth on the sensation. i love sense but its just eye candy and slows down performance
I don't want to replace it. I just want to see how it looks . a problem is it would be the sense 3 port all over again only in reverse. Sgs2 has a 800x400 display unlike the sensation's 960x540 display

Besides the horizontal app drawer. What is wrong with Touch Wiz? It comes with a better email and text client. Its contacts client is miles better and the swiping on contacts to call and text is one of the best features I've ever seen. Its twitter and Facebook integration is also better and its dock icons are interchangeable unlock the dock on Sense.
It doesn't have all that useless eye candy like Sense does. Who the hell needs the home screen to zoom in when unlocking their device. That's just stupid. Don't even get me started on the useless carousel feature. That right there is as worthless as a female in the fire department.

TW contacts is nice I'll give you that. Swiping to the left or right is a great feature. When my Vibrant was my daily driver, all everyone could talk about was getting rid of TW. The launcher sucks, the icons/theme is gross, and samsung widgets aren't better than sense widgets. In my opinion of course. Lol, in fact if you go over to Galaxy S forums they ask about porting Sense to TW devices. The grass is always greener on the other side I suppose.
The sexism in your post wasn't needed though. You don't need a (man part) to be an EMT, or climb a ladder.

Nope, your right. Women make great EMT's and they can climb a ladder. Its the throwing of a ladder they cant seem to accomplish. They also have trouble dragging a fully charged 2 inch hose up a flight of steps. It just aint happening my friend. I work in one of the busiest city's for fires. Not some jolly volly company out in the boondocks who only see fire twice a year. I see this **** first hand and I'm telling you. Women do not have the upper body strength to perform the duty s of this job. Hell, there's some men who don't belong doing this job.
It's not sexism if it's the truth. I'm not PC and that's whats wrong with today's society. We don't have standards and we try to meet quotas to appease the minority's. Whatever happened to BEST MAN FOR THE JOB!
When it comes to Sense widgets being better than TW widgets, your right. However, I don't use any of the widgets. When it comes to the icons on TW looking bad. I don't understand how they do. They look the same to me.
How many of you have even seen or used TW4? Not many unless you have friends with an imported SGS2. I came from ADW and find TW totally inoffensive. Like JR said, it's light, fast, and doesn't screw with the native Android feel of the phone. I totally get why people would like the all-in integrated experience of Sense but TW is a totally different approach. Other than less UI customization options it's no different than any other launcher out there. And some of the Samsung widgets which are exclusive to TW are pretty cool. Starting at the bottom of the thread below I posted pics of TW4 configured on my phone.

Your right. Most of these people haven't even used the new version of TW. Like the one guy who said the Icons were ugly. I can see how one would think that with TW 3.0 when it had the colored boxes surrounding them but now that they were removed, there is no difference in the looks of the icons. Like you said. TW 4 is the least intrusive UI and is also the most polished/optimized UI. There is absolutely no reason to hate it unless you dislike vanilla Android.
And to prove the grass is always greener somewhere else, here's a thread in the SGS2 forum where people are looking for a Sense 3.0 port.

From what I have read it won't be a huge difference on honeycomb, so my guess is it won't be worth it.

Well, what you say is largely true, however ICS open source will allow much more development to occur and there seem to be some nice improvements even to stock, so I'm hopeful that within a few months my Xoom will be even better.
Face unlock? A pretty awesome data manager, the new people app, all core apps updated and they look pretty neat on the SDK as widgets. The new swipe to close in recent apps, and notification bar. The camera update won't be too useful for most but needed anyways. The settings menu looks revamped on tablets. Native screen shot. Larger contact pictures throughout. And we've been able to resize widgets on stock launcher for awhile, but its new on phones.
How is this not better? Yeah I'm sure tiamat will make it better once they get their hands on it but to say it won't be worth flashing is crazy imo.
What about hardware acceleration? Doesn't ICS finally usher this in and shouldn't that help with some of the lag associated with HC? To me, that is more than worth it.
Ill probably buy one lf the first ics tabs and am waiting for the nexus then will buy the sg3 if rumered specs are followed up.. The best part is unification.. I hope there is still good difference in tab and phone experience because i like different devices and enjoy the experience of each, the underlying compatibility will be awesome aspect along with better dual core support tegra 3 cant wait!!

HC added 2d hardware acceleration to go with 3d which was added in Gingerbread. Mine doesn't lag outside of the browser. I would say any problems with the Xoom is from the crappy Tegra2.

How happy are you with your transformer

How happy are you with you TF? I want a 10" tablet and I'm considering the Tf. I'm also considering the Tf prime. The tf1 price will probably come down once the Christmas season is over so now I'm trying to decide on the tf1 or the tf prime.
What I want it to do is be an entertainment device. I'm not using it for spreadsheet or anything like that. I want it to surf the web, watch movies, play games, and in general have fun and kill time with.
What are your thoughts? Are you happy with your purchase?
I have a rooted nook color now and its ok but a little slow sometimes. Anyone have both and can tell me if the Tf is much better?
I have played with a Tf at bestbuy and it seemed laggy at times is this common or was it's memory overloaded with crap from everyone opening different apps all the time?
I love it, with and without the dock. Still I use it only in landscape mode the other mode (what is the name of it?) is slow and laggy indeed... but why would you use that if it is designed for landscape....
I haven't tried any costum rom YET but the video's I saw are fast and very smooth! Check some video's of it, it's called "revolver" rom. Also I think android ICS (4.0) will be much better with dual cores, it's still in "beta" the dual core support...
I originally got it to do one or two things but I've found I have used it a lot more and for a lot more things than I had originally planned. I did get the dock with it, but to be honest it's not something I have really used much yet. Overall I love it and haven't regretted buying it. The wife has stole it on more than one occasion as well. The only lag I've noticed is using in Portrait mode or when using Live wallpaper, but it's not particularly bad, and something that an overclock may fix.
I love it. The only gripe is the fingerprints on the screen but then they all suffer from that. I would not even think about moving to the Prime - this does everything I need and at a reasonable speed and with good battery life. I started out with the Stock ROM but have been on the Revolution ROM for ages. I did not buy the dock (and would not have used it). I use it for ebooks, magazines, mobile email, mobile document editing and a bit of multimedia. To be honest, though, most of my music is on itunes (which i listen to on my iphone - the size is much more convenient) and I tend to watch films on the television!
PS - @Cmdrx3 - with overclocking, there is no lag at all and little effect on battery life.
The overal experience is not always smooth as butter but it's nothing like you can experience when you try an démo model in a store. I don't know what people are doing with those devices but that's not at all how my transformer works.
Now, I'm perfectly happy with my transformer (with dock) there is no major flaw that would make my regret my buy.
But, it's a first version of a product, It was en experimentation from Asus, a brillant one, but still, the transformer have flaws. there is some build hiccup, the screen is good but not perfect, the typing suffer from lagging on some website and it's difficult to watch high definition movie without reencoding first, the microphone is ****ty and cams pretty bad too.
So, my advice, If you can afford it, take the Prime with keyboard dock (the dock is awesome, it's not just a keyboard it's a all in one accesorie, case / screen protection / stand up dock / keyboard / extra battery / additionnal port (I also heard there 's an additionnal speaker in the prime dock for an even better sound, but i'm not sure).
It's looking to be a much much much better device than the original transformer and you won't feel like you bought an already outdated device.
If you can't afford it, i'm pretty sure the first Transformer is still a really good deal, especially if you can find it really cheap. And with the addition of ice Cream sandwich it should get a second youth.
I am very happy with my ASUS Transformer. Support is also good. I am not happy with Android OS. Looks more like smartphone OS on steroids on a big screen, rather than fully functional tablet OS. Browser crashes and it's not smooth. Most apps do not resize properly.
It's a good device for casual browsing and palying some games, but when it comes to doing some work it's not very comfortable. The dock also it's not very usefull. I am having problems writing on my native language (there is no stock keyboard layout). Most of the apps are not optimised to work with keyboard.
I hope ICS makes tablets fully functional. Still my TF looks like a fancy toy.
I can't agree with above comment. I do think honey comb is great and i do work with the tablet and dock in the school and it does a decent job. Of course it could do better especially as i take pics as notes on the blackboard, so higher res camera would help. All in all i am very satisfied with the tab.

10/10 now it is rooted. It's like it is on steroids using the revolver rom. 8/10 for the stock rom as i had 2 probs, laggy keyboard on the web browser and web browser closing unexpectedly. Both solved now.
I'm 10/10 with my TF101 and will stay that way as long as their is a line of successor products (Android based NOT Windows 8). That way when it really is upgrade time, I can retire my TF101 and get the current latest and greatest. Other wise I'll have to switch back to a netbook or go pure tablet, once my TF101 is to old.

Multi tasking is great but our does depend on the number of apps running in the background. But you can easily switch between running apps.
I love this tablet, I an do glad that I opted for the TF instead of the galaxy tab. I use it for hours everyday... Everything from watching hd movies, streaming media, writing invoices and proposals for my business (via quickbooks mobile app) view all my school books with course smart, web surf etc... I barely use my pc our laptop anymore, and when I do need to 50% of the time I remotely operate them with my TF via splash top HD.
Worth every penny I paid. I will get the prime in a few months, but I'll wait til development is established.

I don't like it. HTC must have been high out of their minds to take Sense this far. The animations are unnecessary.
I agree, Im not really liking it. The dockbar, IMO, looks like garbage. All those animations seems like it lags the UI as well
the animation is nice. but i don't like the launcher, sense's 3.xx launcher is better that.
I like the animations. The dock and the actual device are ugly. Sucks. HTC messed up on this one. For sure il be getting the amaze instead now. I rather have sense 3.0 on android 4.0.

Software: it doesn't even look like Sense anymore...
i agree, the animations, while nice, look like they hog a bunch of memory, and aren't necessary... if it lags on a device like that, imagine how it would run on our Glacier..LOL
Hardware: reminds me of the Galaxy Nexus, specially from the side lol
it doesn't look as pro and nice as the Sensation... i mean.. wow.. single LED light? the Sensation has two...
much rather get the Sensation instead.
quite disappointed... hope HTC changes it before the official release.
Eww ugly
I'm a Rom Flip Flopper
I was concerned that Sense 4.0 would look too much like previous versions and not allow enough of ICS' great UI to show through. The leaked video was a pleasant surprise!
I like the new status bar, clock/weather widget, and dockbar. All three are a nice change from previous versions which were pretty close to identical going from the Cupcake version of Sense that came out on the Hero all the way up to Sense 3.5 on the Runnymede and Rezound. Finally something different!
Like most people I did not at all like the needless animation in the Settings window, but I'd still be interested in running 4.0 on the MT4G or any future device.
Not a big fan of Sense in general, but it does seem HTC has gone overboard with this one. The phone itself looks pretty sleek though, wonder how cool it would be running AOSP ICS.
I haven't seen the video yet, I'm throttled, but judging by the comments. It's possible that it's just a beta or something, I'm just guessing.
If I helped, give thanks, if you please.

I could care less about the lag; it's the UI itself that annoys me. This has resource hog written all over it. And, Sense got uglier. All this resource rape is unnecessary; people have made exact replicas of Sense using images and other widgets, and it uses a ****lot less resources than Sense's framework (not to mention, the framework is modded to hell). HTC is just getting unnecessary now.
I think HTC should of just watered it down, a lot. Keeps beats and add universal support. Animations are nice so keep those, and have HTC Widgets, and apps and that's it. Stock ICS with minor tweaks.

I'm gonna have to disagree with that. Sense has so many little touches are throughout the UI...far too many to list. There's no way to replicate the Sense experience with themes and widgets.
It's sort of like generic cola...it tastes ok and a little like real Coke, but there's no way to duplicate genuine ice-cold Coca-Cola Classic (or Pepsi ).

you're absolutely right.
people may have made "replicas" of it, but nothing beats the real thing.
just like how those people in China make those fake Android phones/iPhones and sell them
Looks great, but I'll always trade the looks of sense for the responsiveness and better battery life I get from an AOSP or CM build.
After looking at this, if sense REALLY turns out to be that way, I'm hoping some smart guy will make a rom for it without all the needless animations and resource hogging things.
I was really dissapointed that Touchwiz phones were more popular than Sense phones for 2011. I thought HTC would learn from that, but it seems they've gotten worse. I've been kind of excited for a Sense 4.0 rom but now im just probably gonna use my core droid 3.5 rom til my contract is up. If a nexus phone doesnt come to T-mobile... I will be forced to buy the only thing i see good enough....... a galaxy S 3 phone.

[Q] Questions about Sense and Android 4.0

Hello guys,
I've just recently got the One S on contract from Netcom and coming from a Samsung phone this really has been a new experience for me all together. But I have a problem. The phone itself works flawlessly and lags nothing compared to the HTC One X - but I really, really, really HATE SENSE.
I just can't seem to get used to it and since I've pretty much done custom flashing on my old Galaxy S since the very start, I just can't wait to replace SENSE as soon as possible - in the mean time, would it be possible to just unlock the device and put a STOCK version of ICS on it? Like one for the One S so that I get to keep stuff such as the HTC browser and maybe the custom Alt+Tab kind of thingy they put on?
Personally would like to build my own custom ROM with some mixed ingredienses but I wouldn't know where to start.
Any ideas? Or do I just have to wait and stick to this in the mean time?
As a stop-gap measure, you could install another launcher. I did this on the HTC Sensation for awhile before we started having either the non-sense options or true AOSP builds like we have now. From my limited experience, this is a flagship device and developers and users and documentarians will show up. The Sensation has a pretty rich community of both sense and AOSP builds now. One cautionary note though. On my Sensation running a modified version of CM9 there are things still being fixed. You may find early versions of ICS will have a variety of issues as developers get things solved. Its particularly hard before source gets released though. Its like peddling a bicycle backwards in a dark tunnel when its raining.
As mentioned above, install Nova launcher for now.

I guess each one has it's own taste
My gripe with sense is just what you describe as appealing.. the small black text on white background in most of the interface is killing my eye-sight at night. Guess I have been used to the Android 2.3 experience for too long and as much as Sense 4 works wonders - it just not my cup of tea. This could of course be fixed if there was a "black" skin that could be applied. Preferably with as little bright colors as possible (I know, may sound boring but will eventually save a few hours of battery in the long run due to the AMOLED display running "less hot" )
I'm in the same situation as the OP, really enjoyed ICS on my Desire until the display broke (got slammed display first into table... IKEA > HTC)
Anyways here's hoping that I understand these nuggets correctly: "MoDaCo Custom ROMs are based on official ROMs - either shipping or leaked."
"Stock style and Vanilla (ICS) style prebakes will be available as the ROM takes shape."
Source: first post in [ROM] 11 Apr - MoDaCo Custom ROM for the HTC One S - Sense and Vanilla styles in the One S Development forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592126
So hopefully Paulobrien just removes Sense etc from an official ROM. Not sure whats up with the cooking lingo though, maybe there is a dev-chef-lingo dictionary somewhere on XDA!
Also I second your request for where to start learning to build your own ROM! Should post a Q in the noob-friendly thread here.

Perhaps you are right
Looking at sense 3.0 interface , the black blackground is weird, sense 4 with white background for settings seems much more natural. I have spent quite some time around my friends who have EVO 3D and Sensation, and I have to admit I will miss the eye catching animations and the easy access carousel function. Of course this is will be my first HTC phone so I can see how people hate the white look of settings. Coming from an iPhone with white settings too, it will be a similar transition for me. Sense just seems to have so much depth and much to explore compared to other Android Overlays. Having ICS along with it just makes the experience much smoother and sweeter.(Pun partially intended )
So... can anybody tell me if the Stock ROMs that have been cooked for the One S recently work good enough to run for production (i.e. HTC camera, launcher, weather widget)
I really would like to feel that AOSP experience again just like on my old Galaxy S. But I don't want to loose any functionality

Try Black Dragon 3.8 Rom. Very stable and keeps all functions working.

Kthx.
Does that include the HTC ImageSense chip-drivers? I really like the way the camera snaps those pics in a fraction of a second!
