I just got my SNS yesterday and it's my first android phone (was previously using an LG cookie) First thing I did was try to root it, and I seemingly succeeded, or so I thought. It looks like it's rooted and the superuser apps there but I can't install apps using any of the guides I find or even update to 2.3.2 (keep getting and error 7 msg). When I try to install using APKInstaller it tells me it can't find the device, which I think is the problem.
I think the problem is that someway or another windows 7 64 bit stopped recognizing my phone as a Nexus S and now recognizes it as a portable device in device manager (There's also an Android Phone, with an Android Composite ADB interface) I used the SDK to install all the updates available including the google usb driver rev. 4. I tried updating the Portable device driver using the google usb driver but windows keeps it as a WPD Filesystem Volume Driver. Also I noticed when I checked to see if adb gave me a serial number for the phone using the cmd prompt commands in the rooting guides it comes up blank.
I used usbdeview to delete everything seemingly related to Android, but everytime I reconnect the phone it, installs the drivers for the portable device.
I need help to make windows recognize the phone as a nexus s again so I can update and install apps and games etc. If anybody out there can help i'll really appreciate it. Explain the steps to me as if you were talking to a child, leaving nothing out plz. Thanks for any assistance.
I live outside the US (no android market) and would hate to think I messed up and expense phone purchase in just one day
Not quite sure where to start. But my intuition tells me its the Windows 7 64-bit and drivers that's not playing along. You might want to google if other users are having trouble with W7 64-bit with Android drivers. Otherwise, find another computer and repeat the steps. If not, flash a custom ROM to see if that eliminates the problem. You haven't damaged your phone. Don't worry.
just install directly from android market website
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I assume you mean instal the update from the market (which I can't do because I don't have wifi)?
I managed to get the adb to list a device number after I installed java x32 & x64 bit. I still can't install apps or get the update to work, but I'll try unrooting and then rerooting my phone as see how that goes.
Oh, I haven't done the initial sign into gmail thing yet in case that makes any difference
Edit: god I feel stupid. I didn't realize that I had to upgrade from 2.3 to 2.3.1 and then to 2.3.2. I did that an everything upgrade without any problems. Now just got to figure out how to install apk's and I'm golden
Edit 2: Ok, I figured everything out and now i'm up to date with updates and I can install apps and games. Oh Happy Day Thx for all the help
Hello All:
I have had lots of fun learning from you guys and lurking. I have modified my homescreen and love running Go Launcher EX on my backflip. But now, I need more!
I have tried, without success, to root my Motorola Backflip on Mac. So I've come to the experts. I know its not the best android phone, but it's what I have until I am eligible for upgrade.
I have searched and found similar threads with no answers. Perhaps they were overlooked. I cannot use unrevoked because I own a Backflip.
Is there anyone here who has done it and can help? I would like to root, overclock and perhaps whatever the most stable Cyanogen rom is?
It is currently running the Motorola provided 2.1 upgrade with a few apps.
I am on Mac OSX 10.5
MB300
BLUR Version: 3.0.1390
Firmware. 2.1 -update1
Kernel: 2.6.29
Build number ERD70
I have downloaded ADB / SDK for Mac as well.
Thank you all, Any help is appreciated.
Surely one of the XDA geniuses has a solution to this...right?
Hey, I have neither the phone or a Mac but since I'm prepping to upgrade my friend's backflip from 1.5(!) to whatever the most stable rom is, this caught my attention.
I don't have any direct experience to offer you, but I have thought of a workaround to at least get you on a similar page as everyone else.
Your issue is that you have a Mac combined with a very unpopular phone so you really can't find simple easy solution to rooting and Rom(ing) your phone so I'm thinking that if you can switch your platform to something with universal instructions you can then go to the basics of using ADB to root your phone as I'm sure that there are guides for that.
So I'm thinking that you would use Ubuntu or an Ubuntu deriviative (as there are a few guides about achieving root and ADB through Ubuntu) and then find instructions for rooting your phone through ADB. It's a little bit of a workaround, but it's not as complicated as it sounds.
Best thing about this method is that you don't have to change anything to your computer as you can use a live CD or a Live USB to run Ubuntu from and then when you're done remove the disc or USB and reboot your computer and you're right back to your normal Mac experience.
First thing you'll need is to find an Ubuntu version that you want to use. I'd recommend 10.10 as 11.04 has some bugs from what I hear and instead of using Vanilla Ubuntu, use one of the skinned versions that come with lots of the visual and effective tasks already implemented (Sort of like HTC Sense over stock Android 1.6) I use Pinguy OS, click here for the review or a really popular version is Linux Mint.
Once that's done, look up instructions for using a Live CD on a Mac. Here's a Set
(You only need to do Step 2 & 3 once you download Linux Mint or Pinguy OS)
Now once you finally have Ubuntu/Pinguy/Linux Mint running,
review this Thread here on getting ADB set up for Ubuntu.
After that, you should be able to find instructions for rooting the Backflip using ADB and then you can play with Rom's to your hearts content.
Okay, I know this looks complicated but it's really pretty simple, it's more reading than actual work.
Read and learn about Ubuntu/Pinguy OS/Linux Mint
Download Version of your choice to a USB or a DVD
Boot into a Live version
Follow ADB in Ubuntu instructions to install it
Find out how to root your phone
Root Phone
Download Rom to root of card and install, enjoy and have fun.
Just remember that do all of your reading before you start, don't get confused about the different versions of Ubuntu because Ubuntu is just the basic not quite as pretty while Pinguy OS and Linux Mint are Ubuntu with some nice gloss and etc...and finally remember that nothing gets saved on your Live USB or Live CD so once you restart the computer, it's all gone so make sure you are rooted and satisfied before you exit the Session.
Once you get all the reading done and comprehended, it's probably not more than 15 minutes of work, if I wasn't in the process of moving, I'd follow the directions as best as I could to see how it works, but I probably won't be stable until next weekend at the earliest.
Good luck.
I thought about doind somethign like that but its just seemed like a REALLY roundabout way of doing something that looks so simple.
I will hold out for a more simple solution but if nothing comes up I guess that may be my only option...
Thanks
Sorry I couldn't come up with something that was more direct, but that was the only way I could think of to help you.
Why don't you try here? This Site is much more active for the Backflip and maybe you can get some better assistance.
i have a moto backflip rooted and running cyanogenMod 6 and it was a pain in the ass to root and have the rom put on. if you google "update motorola backflip 2.2" you should see something with the name "tech geek guy". he gives u step by step procedure to loading the rom. since we have a moto backflip, we cant use the z4root since the backflip doesnt allow outside market apps to be installed. but once u have this rom on your device, u can install outside apps. anyways. u have to use the one click method or watever its called. i used a pc and not a mac so this is as much info as i can give u. sorry.
GOOGLE DOES WONDERS PEOPLE. USE IT. : )
Hello Guys,
I have a Hilti Laser PD-C device that runs:
android: 4.1.2
build: sparky_silver_2.3.15
I want to note that all apps should be arm not x86 but Im not sure of the DPI.
This runs a special modified Hilti rom. I would love to be able to get a custom rom and add more apps. I am willing to toss some donations for this. Has anyone done anything with this device before?
**** Update: ****
I was able to get root access via PC version "KING_ROOT"
http://king.myapp.com/myapp/Kingroot/kingroot_pc/KingRoot_pc_en.exe
1. I downloaded the most current sdk for ADB
2. I also downloaded the Hilti update app.
www.hilti.com/updatepdc
3. I was able to use King_Root even while the app didnt see the device and it recognized the device after I clicked connect.
4. The main ROM is very difficult to get around. You cant just click an app you side-loaded. Download a launcher that matches the android version. I used smart launcher, no reason, just the first I found. Use ADB to sideload on to the device.
(adb install "app name") https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/smart...1-build-054-android-apk-download/#description
5. From here I got full control to the apps I sideloaded. I am still having issues with connecting to BT on my note9 for the internet.
It is what it is... But thanks for the help. I hope anyone else looking finds this.

Hi, everyobody. So, I've downloaded an apk for a multiplattform emulator that I used to have installed in my phone but lost when rebooting and happens to have been removed from the PlayStore. The thing is, said apk seems to come with a malware. I've done a couple of test to see if the malware was from somewhere else or if it comes from the phone's system but it seems like it comes in the apk of the emulator.
This malware installs some bloatware apps and even if I uninstall them, the malware just installs them again by itself. It also starts to take control of the phone. The malware, however, disappears if I do a factory reset. I tried opening the apk file with a file explorer and see what's inside the apk file to see if I could identify the malware files or whatever that triggers it and erase them from the apk, but unfortunately I lack the knowledge to tell what belongs to the emulator and is the malware.
I know it's a little bit silly of a help request, but I really like that emulator and I can't find a clean malware-free apk of it. If someone with knowledge on the subject has some spare time and is willing to help me with this silly request I would be really greatful to them.
Here's one of the few links to the apk. CAREFUL: don't install it, the malware seems to install itself in your phone's system and won't gomeven if you uninstall the emulator.
Retrogaming Emulator for Android for Android - APK Download
Download Retrogaming Emulator for Android apk 4.14.0 for Android. PSX Emulator, GBA Emulator, SNES Emulator, NES Emulator, PSP Emulator, TV Box

I have read the rules and I don't think I'm breaking them by asking help with this, but if I'm making something wrong or if this is not the place for asking for this kind of help, please let me know and I'll delete the post. Also, it would be nice if you could tell me what is a proper site for asking help with this.
Thanks in advance, everybody.
I wouldn't even attempt to download a known infected file
Scan it with online Virustotal and see what you got. You should have done this before side loading it... not very clever.
If it's not the cause a factory reset is in your future, and if you're running Android 8 or lower more may be required if its a rootkit.
Find and ID the malware and uninstall/delete it... if you can.

how does this malware manifest itself?
you can always run the apk through an online android-apk decompiler to get the source code and then look into it

Yeah but that's on Android 8 and lower.
On Pie and above it can't do that.
It's a nasty little critter

Well, for what I've seen it's a malware that hides in the system files (I don't know where). Once there, it starts installing bloatware and spyware on the phone and starts to take control of things like the browser (mostly to show pages of ads and bets) and calls and messages. I can uninstall the bloatware apps, but the malware installs them again after some time has passed. After a Factory Reset, the malware is gone, that's how I realized the malware comes from the emulator apk. But Iike that emulator so I want to erase the malware from the apk. Also, thanks for the advice, I will try it. :"D

No, I expressed myself wrong. The malware disappears after a factory reset. What I can't uninstall is the bloatware apps that the malware installs while it's in the phone. Once the malware is gone, so are the bloatware apps.

The hard reset deletes the malware together with the apps, what am I missing here?
Can't help with de-compiling but when I was investigating a malware outbreak, I turned off the system setting apk.
It later turned out to be ES file explorer and the apps were being installed via google play/mobile services.
Of course you can't change any settings but at least I could use the phone and nothing got installed.
Use the terminal/adb commands to turn off and back on when your done:
pm disable com.android.settings / pm enable com.android.settings

I want to identify which parts of the app files are the maleare ones so I can delete them and get the app to be malware-free.

You could try firewall blocking the app or maybe running under VMOS.
Personally I just ditch it...
There are decompiler apps that might enable you to defang it.

Or there are perfectly “virus-free” emulators on the internet.
The malware will be downloaded by a background process. You need to find the link for the website and break it.
The best place to start would be an app that can log dns and ip calls, like Adguard. It will also block any already known links.
If you can break the link to prevent the apps installing its a start.. But as already suggested you are better off using a more up to date app because retroarch may not run correctly on newer tech.

Yes the pm command was entered via adb from a PC via USB. A shell terminal on the device as a standard user never seems to have the right privileges to run the pm command but su - (superuser root) will.
