[Q] Build Quality - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello NS Owners,
Does your NS squeek when you apply slight pressure on the plastic at the side of the volume rocker?
Mine does and it annoys mei! For €470 it should be a solid build. I'm just wondering if I got a bad one or are they all like this. I don't really want to stuff it with paper!
Thanks

Nope. I've had two, neither squeeked.

Look man, this is what you get with Samsung. You cant expect a solid build when 95% of their hardware is plastic. HTC or Apple on the other hand, they reason why their phones have such good build quality is because they're made out of solid metal (typically aluminum) and glass. Yeah, my volume buttons are wiggly and squeaky if i push them against the plastic bezel too. I have learned to live with it. It's just how Samsung works.

Thanks
Okay thank you both for your input. I think I will contact Samsung. Even if they won't do anything for me, at least they might take note of the complaint.

Better than nothing for sure, but all in all, I hope they don't make the next Nexus phone... :/

Mines doesn't squeak. I think it probably would eventually if you keep removing the battery cover. I try not to remove mines.
I honestly do not have a problem with the plastic build because its light and I love to lay down in bed holding my phone over my face. My old myTouch 4g had superb build quality, but was just too heavy to hold for long periods.

HTC? Have you every touched a HD2? Or seen the screen coming apart on an EVO? HTC is no curve setter, and i personally would put them in the same class as samsung, other than the newest phones coming out recently.

To some people $470 is a lot of money. You do not know the next man's situation.

Mine wiggles but I fiddle with volume a lot. I figure it's normal. Handled iPhones with wiggly buttons too.

i use a pop case and it covers the volume rockers pretty well. easier to press with it on... if that helps, probably not.
but i dont notice it sqeaking before i put the case on

Funny, I've owned 2, and they both of them had buttons that squeaked/rattled. But like another user said, I put a case on them, and it doesn't squeak any more - the case puts just enough tension on them to keep them from rattling in place.

I'm very happy that you have so much money. If ever you feel the need to make your pockets a bit lighter then I'll gladly help you out.
And to everyone else:
It's not the buttons that squeak. It's where the back cover "touches" the buttons. It's almost like the back cover isn't clipping on properly so it moves a little bit and then it squeaks. I've tried using a silicon cover but that had no effect... I wish that they used the Samsung Wave design for the Nexus S. That phone was solid as a rock.

Oleophobic coating, eh?

The evidence, after a week...
I can't say that's not disappointing. Has yours worn off?
same thing here after 2 weeks
mine has not worn off [yet]. still looks great.
Glad i put a screen protector on mine the minute i took it out of the box.. that looks bad.. id deff take mine back if it started doing that..
You guys aren't using any strong solvents to clean your devices are you? (even though technically, it shouldn't be dissolving)
Mine still looks great too had it since launch
Wow that sicks. I have had mine since launch and have no problem. Making me want to buy a zagg though after seeing this post
There was a thread about this a while back, This should NOT be happening and you should exchange your device

I agree. The problem we now have is, well, if I go back and exchange, what potential problems will the next phone have? In all honesty, the smudging is not an issue when the screen is on. What the heck..I'll replace it tmrw

Been dreading this happening but mine seems fine so far after cleaning regularly with micro fibre cloth.

How well does this fit the nexus s? I'd like something similar, the pouch I used for the dhd was just brilliant but I've not seen an equivalent yet for the nexus s.
Fits perfect for me.

I tried my N1 pouch on the NS... the NS is just too big for it. When I slide the N1 pouch over the NS, it's so tight that the volume buttons are being pressed as I put it on. Oh and it sticks out a bit at the bottom lol.
I use my old g1 pouch. Fits perfectly.

No wearing off of the coating on mine. Heck, I didn't even know the phone had the oleophobic coating. Glad to see it does. My phone is constantly in my hand being used since first day of launch.
Sounds like you have a defective one.

Hey, good idea. I think I used to put my i9000 Galaxy S into the N1 pouch, but it was just a bit of a stretch. I may try to find the N1 pouch for that added protection in the pocket against keys and change.
Why worry about a pouch? I had one for my N1 and it worked great! But then I learned of BestSkinsEver. The one for the NS is perfect, it even covers up the camera lens! There is no spot uncovered and exposed to the possibility of damage from keys, change, whatever. Take a look at the pics. Cant even tell its on.

[Q] IS this case a good idea? Is it already made? [UPDATE]

UPDATE
I actually found a silicone case on ebay. Its not how I wanted it to be but its still cool. Its a 2 piece and come in different colors. Something cool to mention is that it goes on top of the key board. I like the black and white ones the most
------------------------------------------------------------------------
A hard or silicone case that wraps/hugs the phone. For people like me that don't use the keyboard. So once you have the case you cant open it to use the keyboard. I hate letting people use my phone and they either play with the keyboard and messes up my hinge and etc. I have a case already (clear case with kickstand) but i want a case where it just wraps the whole phone so no one can flip out the keyboard.
Who thinks this is a good idea?
is it already made and I just dont know?
I think it's a pretty good idea.
i explained to my girlfriend how i thought the hinge was flimsy and i was worried about it breaking in the future. yet she still has to slide they keyboard numerous times a day, HARD. REALLY starting to piss me off. Friends do it too... it just needs a gentle push.. jesus

The one piece silicone cases are much better then the garbage protection we have now.
I DO use rubberbands already. Do any of you still have the bands that came on the usb and headphones in the retail box? I just have one wrapped around the trackpad. It works just fine for me and the black matches my case. Still slides out of my pocket just as easily as it did before, with the gel tmo case that is.
Saves my battery, my hinge, my keyboard, and gave me a reason to flash the amazing gingerbread multitouch keyboard sweetness of doom.

Then why didn't you just get a MyTouch 4G instead? If you never use the hardware keyboard, then it is just added weight and bulk. The MyTouch 4G trades a hardware keyboard for a front camera, more RAM, faster CPU, etc.

My girlfriend got a free G2 from the tmobile loyalty program several weeks back, and she's been wanting a case like this, as she never uses the physical keyboard. I don't think it's too ludicrous of a request. If it's between a free phone that happens to have a QWERTY and one that costs $120-200, I think it's relatively a no brainer.
I'm thinking of telling her to try this case: http://www.wirelessground.com/t-mobile-g2-aluminum-black-case.html. I just hope it doesn't add too much bulk.
I so want a case like the one described above. it would be one step closer to having a Desire HD
I felt the same way, initially, but have grown rather fond of being able to see the entire screen while I type. Not so sure I'd give that up now.

Build quality

I'm an HTC fan but this device truly has the worst build quality for a 300$ device. Unacceptable...
Light leakage
Bottom strip adhesive not great
Kickstand located incorrectly
I just played on an Inc2... That is constructed much better... It feels tight, just better physically... This one seems to have been a shoddy job. If it was not for the fact that its rootable and the only lte phone available, it was going back.

Cool story bro!
I think the overall build quality is a step down from my nexus one. But, I didn't get the Tbolt for its build quality...

No complaints here. Kickstand works as it should (I will admit it would be nice to be able to charge it while in the kick stand, but the charge port is actually in a pretty ideal location). I really like the soft back of the phone. I keep this thing in my pocket basically 24/7 and there isn't even the *slightest hint* of a scratch anywhere on the screen. I do see the light leakage if you're holding the phone at a certain angle with the buttons lit up...but why would you ever hold the phone at such an angle to begin with?

Yeah the construction of the thunderbolt definately could of been ALOT better for the cost of the device. Hell my first 2 bolts the screen was popped out from the frame, and would press down like the BB storm. The side frame near the volume rocker squeaks when you press it (most tbolts do this). The kickstand has been great so far, would be nice if they put the charging port in a different location so you can charge and watch videos landscape mode. Large pieces of debris under the screen visable even under low light conditions. The bleeding can be annoying, but barely visable at times (I know some are worse than others). The Tbolt overall is a good phone, but the build felt kinda rushed and isn't really the prime example of quality from HT.
My Light Leakage was so bad I had it Exchanged plus Really sunken Power Button. My Exchanged one is now Almost Perfect with no leakage. Its a Hit in miss I Guess, Which Sucks.
Brilliant!

I have those problems plus a very badly sinking power button. It's almost to the point where it's unusable. Sometime you have to hit it with your fingernail. VZW won't give me a replacement though since it still technically works...
No problems so far with the power button on mine and otherwise a pretty solid quality phone, though not as carved-from-iron feeling as the Droid X was. That one's my gold standard.
The Thunderbolts build quality is horrible my problems are:
2 dead pixels
Kickstands peeling
Light leakage
Reminds me when I had the EVO minus the peeling kickstands
I wish HTC would take some hardware lessons from Apple

Sorry you have had such bad luck go get a replacement. There is absolutely nothing wrong with my phone (i have had it since release day with nothing but a screen protector) except some extremely minor light leakage. Plus I would never go back to a locked boatloader, what a mess.

The thunderbolt is probably my best HTC android phone, its got a great build quality.
Who gives a duck about a peeling kickstand? Just peel it off the rest of the way..
No light leakage on my thunderbolt either
My aria and incredible had cases the squeaked when you grabbed them, and they felt cheap because they were so light
The incredible had a plasticy glass on it that bugged me because you could feel it bend at your fingertip
Also the camera lens got cracked and literally fell off it, when I tried to take of the back I ripped it in half
So compared to my previous phones I dont think.I will be having these issues with my thunderbolt

Okay review but I disagree on the button feedback comment.
I've had my case for about a week or so.. Just took it off today and it is so much easier to press the power button and volume rocker.

Of course not having a case will def feel better. And thats why I said it sometimes feel like there is nothing there...but it seems that it got taken the wrong way..when I say nothing there , I meant like it feels like you are not pressing nothing at all which is not good . sorry for the misunderstanding .
Totally agreed with the fact that maybe for the buttons they could ve use less material making it feel more natural

Received mine a few days ago. The button feedback is normal as well. Maybe this is the 'fixed' one as well. Anyway, great case, snug fit. The only thing that is, have to remove it every now and then to remove dust that visible in between clear plastic and N4 back glass. A bit annoyed to see those specks of dust... Nothing major
Also can confirm the buttons on this case are perfect now . received mine yesterday.

nop at all! the only "down" is the back, since its acrylic, time to time accumulates some dust.
Got this case a few days back and it's excellent. Button feedback is better than without the case - indeed, the power button now works 100% for me while I was having trouble with it before. Fits like a glove, the cut outs are perfect, especially the mini jack - I can fit most headphones in it now.
In my opinion this is the best case I could buy. It makes the device feel a bit bigger and thicker, but I have more grip when I hold it, and feel absolutely protected. It fell a few times and got no damage whatsoever. The back got a bit scratched, but it's ok, it's two years old!
A nice touch is the tiny feet on the back, so when you put it on a table, you can perfectly hear the speaker.
Definitely a very good case.

I Hate This Stupid Phone

It just has so many flaws, I don't even know where to begin. I'm sure many others will agree with me.
The build quality is just too good. It is so fast, I can't even see any animations. I need lag in my browser, or it just feels fake. The battery life lasts way too long for me to be able to break in the charger that came with it. The back is so smooth, I think I'm going to drop it. People are always wanting to see my phone, because it "looks so cool", that I can never play with it myself.

Actually the phone being smooth is a flaw for me. I always feel like I'm going to drop It but I'd rather keep metal, so I'll live with it. maybe HTC could have put some sort of coating over the metal to make it less smooth.

You could try putting an XtremeGuard on the back. Maintains the metallic look but adds some grip. But of course if you like the feel of the metal then... yeah probably not =\

I have dropped mine 2 times, both from about 3-4 feet onto the pavement couple of small nicks on the metal casing but I am amazed at how well this phone holds up.
Yeah I dropped mine too. Fell out of my shirt pocket flat on its back onto concrete day after I got it. Scared me to death. Got a tpu case on eBay until spigen ships my slim armor later this month.

I agree. I have mine in a Otterbox case, if I remove the case I have trouble holding the phone. I think any coating would hurt the appearance of the phone but there are clear plastic slip-on cases that might not look too bad?
The Otterbox is just plain FUGLY but I need the protection and the grip!

I have a clear gel case on mine and imo it completes the phone. The metal finish is to slick...i'd drop it for sure. With the gel case its 100% easier to grip, its not slippery and doesnt add bulk to the phone. Also with it being clear you can still see the beautiful design of this beast. I cant say a darn thing bad about this phone

There's a few test videos on YouTube, drop tests from 4ft/7ft/10ft, one of the tests was between the M7 and M8 and the other was between the M8, the G S5 and the iPhone 5S, the M8 got the best results in both test, only finally cracking at the 10ft mark in the latter video, not cracking at all in the M7/M8 video. Also another video shows scratch tests with a key, butchers knife, pocket knife and a hammer. Though it was hard to see in the video, the guy recording said there was next-to-no, if not NO scratches on the device, even after hitting it pretty hard with a hammer, though he used the back of the hammer and finally cracked it.
I think it's safe to say this phone is near indestructible, not saying you shouldn't still baby it but you can feel better about an accident that may happen if you drop it or what not, not to mention the 6 month screen crack insurance from HTC Advantage
I can't seem to find a good case that'll protect and look cool, any advice?

I ordered one of these cases even though I like to run my phones naked. I figured I'd order a nice looking case just in case I'm going to be doing something that requires the protection. I thought it looked pretty nice, but that's just my opinion.

I also like how this one lets the phone's natural beauty show through.

I had the clear case with the black perimeter which I purchased with the phone at Big Red's store. I'm not sure, but I think the way the case's rubber sides was such that while taking off the case to access the microsd card I may have bent the metal near the volume buttons. That troubled me and forced me to put that case away. Big Red, thankfully, replaced my handset about a week later (I bought mine at 1:15 p.m. on 3/25/14), and I put a crystal clear TPU case on it which lets the Arctic Silver finish shine through.
I'm actually going to get my second replacement today... First had a small nick in the upper left corner, now this one has a strange bump in the center below the bottom speaker, resulting in warped metal. It wasn't there when I got it, but after some use it showed up. I guess be careful about applying pressure to the bottom corners of the device?
I feel like I'm being nitpicky, but idk... These are pretty glaring IMO.
Hopefully thirds a charm.

Beware of clear TPU: it will turn yellow over time... At least matte finish ones will.
I think diztronic makes the best slim and protective TPU cases. I recently got a translucent gray for my gray metal M8 and it's been great so far. Can't see all of the device's beauty, but it is see through.

I had a clear TPU but while minimal, it provided very little protection. I went back to the UAG. Great protection without a major additional bulk of the Otterbox defender.

Why do people keep saying camera is bad?!! I took 2 photos, one with note3, and one with m8. U tell me which one looks better.....

And from the note 3.....
Hmmm...they both look fuzzy to me? Didn't look like that before I uploaded Them here.
Anyways, the point is, it's a good camera. It's one of my favorite features of this phone! I compared to note 3, and honestly unless your cropping them, they look about the same.
