(HELP) Failed root. - Thunderbolt General

I tried to one-click root my TB and now my device is stuck on 1.03.605.10 (With no root.) I've tried to return to stock rom but I must be rooted to do so.
(SOLVED Thanks Everyone Bless and good day.)

First off I don't believe you need to be rooted to return to stock. Just put the RUU on your sd card and boot into recovery.
Second there is really no way of us helping you if you used an automated root. I guess you could post the method you used and we could check and see any errors in the code.

Sounds like you disconnected or stopped it during the root process? If it's using the non-one click method for its approach you should consider figuring out the step in the instructions for manual root it crashed at and try to finish the process. Mind you I did it via the manual approach so not really sure how the one click method works; however, that's my advice.

Thanks for the response. I can't find the website where I got it from But basically its just like the regular root except I didn't have to keep copying and pasting in the terminal, the 1-Click did it for me. Also how do I boot into recovery. (I'm new to android (Came from a blackberry Storm & Tour).. Again thanks for the responses.

Hmm You are right.. I do remember the Terminal cutting off during the root. The last thing I remember was the phone being on the screen with the skateboarding droids and the last thing I remember it doing was "Updating".
My whole purpose for rooting was to get rid of the bloat ware and now its like 20x worst.
Again Thanks everyone in advance.

hold volume down while holding the power button will get you into bootloader. So find the stock PG05IMG place it on your SD card. Get in bootloader and follow instuctions.

My phone is not even connecting to the internet anymore. It stays on 1x with 2 bars of signal max.

This is why we do NOT use auto root/easy root methods. Too many things can **** up. I highly advise you to download the stock shipped RUU and then procede to follow the manual root method located here: http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...he-htc-thunderbolt-and-unlock-its-bootloader/
If you have any other questions or issues, feel free to contact me on here via PM or on the AndIRC chat room #thunderbolt. Good luck!

Follow this process:
Pull the battery out
Place battery back in
Hold down Power + Volume Down until the bootloader comes up
This WILL take some time, do NOT release these buttons until the bootloader is up!

Thanks. it works now I'm in the boot loader now. Thanks

Let me ask this, does the phone actually start up when you attempt to start it? Can you get to your home screen?
Also, I personally have not encountered the safe mode message so I am not 100% on that. Are there any other messages or text on the screen?

Yeah it started up. I got it back to stock thanks to your advice. I'm gonna retry and do it the long way instead of taking shortcuts. Thanks sooo much for your help I really do appreciate it!!

[ODIN] Stock Rooted ED1 (downgrade from ED2) [2011.05.18]

Well here is something that I hope is the start of some hardcore hacking.
This is an ODIN that I created of stock-rooted ED1 for the DROID Charge. In the course of making this, I bricked my charge (first attempt failed in ODIN) and then created a working ODIN that un-bricked it. I then upgraded to ED2 (I confirmed that I lost root as well) so I could test if this will downgrade back to ED1 and it worked and I have root again!
Instructions for ODIN (for those who are unfamiliar with it):
1. Open ODIN.
2. Put the phone into download mode. Do this by powering off your phone, pulling out the battery, and then holding volume down while connecting it to your pc. A giant yellow triangle should be on the phone's screen and it should say 'Downloading...' ODIN should say 'Added!!' and one of the boxes will be yellow and say '0:[COM#]'
3. Click the button labeled 'PDA' and locate the file you are wanting to flash. For emphasis: YOU MUST USE THE PDA BUTTON!
4. Click start. Do not disconnect the phone while it is flashing, it can cause some serious damage.
5. Wait.
6. When finished, unplug the phone, put the battery back in and power up the phone.
Every time I've flashed this, the phone booted straight into recovery. Just select reboot (press home) and it boots up normally. It should probably be recommended to wipe data and cache afterwards, but I didn't and all of my data stayed in tact.
Multiple people have reported that this works. Use at your own risk. I am not responsible for anything that happens to your phone if this doesn't work.
Thanks to imnuts for the HOW-TO thread on creating ODIN builds.
Download here.
Download ODIN here.
to my redbull habit if you feel the need.
I feel dumb for asking, but what are you using to flash this to the phone? I've never used anything other than simple one click root programs, so if you could give a little more detail I'd be happy to try it out.
Download Odin here: http://goo.gl/52aY1
Download Drivers here: http://goo.gl/Tbcca
Download stockrootedED1-20110517.tar.md5 http://goo.gl/kD3Ld
1. Open Odin3 v1.30
2. Remove battery,Hold Vol down. Connect USB to computer and phone then press power. It should take you to a yellow android.
3. Click PDA Button
4. choose stockrootedED1-20110517.tar.md5
5. Click on the Start button
6. Don't Touch and allow the phone to reboot
7. If its taking a while to start DONT PANIC, its perfectly normal
Thanks for the guide, but it doesn't do anything for me, seems like Odin doesn't even know my phone is there. When I plug it in I get the Verizon media manager link to pop up though.
I edited my first post with a link to ODIN and instructions. I guess I'm a little slow with the typing because you beat me to it medjam, but you left out the step of putting the phone into download mode.
Works for me, though the first time I rebooted I didn't have any network reception. Another reboot fixed that.
Wish I could get rid of the "system update available" pop up, but at least I'm rooted again. Thanks!
that's awesome...I gonna try this right now....If i brick my phone I will just swap it out a vzw..They are tarded and can't tell the difference any ways. Will report back once I finish.

Once rooted go into your build.prop file and every thing that says ED1 change it to ED2...that should quit the nagging to update. Then restart your phone
Credit goes to Jt3 for that info as he posted it in the Charge forum at android central.

AWESOME!!! So glad to help!
Very nice!
I know that this will kick start the development of this device now that everybody can haz root.
so just to be clear here, this will bring you back from ED2 down to ED1. Does this method require you to have already rooted while you were on ED1 and then upgraded to ED2 and lost it or will this work for everyone?
Thanks in advance

They certainly can tell. Don't send back a phone because you broke it. That makes ALL of us look like assholes and promotes the disturbing trend of locking bootloaders. Be an adult.

Hey guys. First off, I'm psyched to see this come out.
When I try to do it, I get a driver installation failure telling me that the serial driver was not found and then ODIN never seems to see the phone. This is on W7.
Any help?

I think the issue is that my damn work laptop is locked down pretty tight so it won't let all the drivers install. Unlike many here, I'm actually not an IT professional so I can't circumvent it. I'll just have to try it at home tonight.

[Q] Need Some Help Please

I flashed user paulburton's ics rom (beta). I played with it, but wanted to go back to stock (rooted). Problem is, that I must have downloaded the unrooted version of them rom and therefore cannot boot into recovery revert to the backup of my rom. Furthermore, the ics beta will not allow me to install CWM nor will it give me su permissions to do anything. Even worse, mass storage (micro sd) is disabled on this beta. Is there some way (via adb commands possibly) to remove/delete the ics beta and go back to stock? Any help is appreciated.
It quite clearly states that you should not try it unless you know how to get back to honeycomb. If you have SBK1 aka your serial number is B60 or lower then use NVFlash to get back to stock. As there is not a "Unrooted" version of the rom i have no idea what you did. Also when you go into recovery "IE hold powerbutton and volume down then up" what does it show?
mrevankyle, you may want to check your facts. there IS a rooted version of the beta, or at least there is on his blog. and I thought I could get back to honeycomb. Anyway, the message I get when I hold down the power button and volume- is the option to cold boot linux or wipe data.

You have to push the Vol Up button within about 5 secs after seeing the words
at the top left corner. If you wait too long you'll get the cold boot/wipe data options.

Baseballfanz, first and foremost, thank you for your assistance. I was able to get into recovery and get my backup installed. As for the douchebag (goodintentions), people such as himself (or herself) really make forums like these a drag. Everyone is not as experienced as him/her or it may be their first time with a particular device. Instead of offering something useful, he offers a smart ass comment, which was totally uncalled for. He/she seems to have forgotten that they too were a noob at one point.
Tha Driver said:
Goodintentions, I don't understand "how scary" it could have been for you or "how further south" it could have gone for anyone but me. If I had indeed bricked my tf, you would not have been out of any money or time. It would have been myself that was out of time and or/money. Furhermore, I stick by my original assessment that if you could not/did not want to help, just STFU. The comment about buying an iPad was uncalled for.

As for the comment about the ipad that is essentially the XDA version of calling someone a NOOB and is not to be taken so seriously. It is also nearly impossible to completely brick these things. SO you do not have to worry. And sorry if my original directions were not clear

And yes that is what i said that there was NO UNROOTED version SO YOU MUST HAVE GOTTEN THE ROOTED VERSION. And also the one on his blog is the original unupdated one and not the latest version so please check your facts before blaming other people

[GUIDE] How to Enter ODIN and Recovery Modes on Verizon Galaxy S III

Not sure if this is the proper section for this but thought I would post this here as I'm sure it would highly assist people in development and other tasks. This is the button combinations you need to enter each mode.
ODIN/Download Mode
Make sure your device is completely off
Key Combos: Volume Down + Home
While holding both of them simultaneously press the Power button until you see a disclaimer on the screen
Then let go of all the buttons and press Volume Up to accept the disclaimer
Once the green robot is visible on the screen this indicates that handset is in now ODIN/Download mode
Recovery Mode
Make sure your device is completely off
Key Combos: Volume Up + Home
While holding both of them simultaneously press the Power button
As soon as the phone vibrates, let go of the Power button but keep holding Volume Up + Home
When you see the "Samsung Galaxy S III" logo (not just the word "Samsung"), right after that, the next screen you should see is your recovery
Don't let go of Volume Up + Home until you see your recovery
Updated OP to correct that Samsung devices do not have a "Fastboot" mode. ODIN mode replaces this and the ODIN software is basically a set of fastboot commands which is the only way to communicate to the device on a low level. Just a little FYI for everyone.
Heimdall should also work ,and it's cross-platform, unlike Odin. But somebody with a phone should test it to make sure it does.

Thanks for this handy information.
Since I am not at all familiar with Odin and how it works, could you ad a description of the steps to take in order to use Odin to flash an image file to the Galaxy S III? I watched a video on rooting, but the author never really showed much of the Odin screen on his PC and didn't say anything at all about how to use it. So far I keep reading to "use the PDA button", and I have the files downloaded and ready to go, but I don't want to make any mistakes.

Thanks. I guess it's really pretty simple after all.
I've seen some posts where folks had Odin still chewing on the process after 45 minutes. What do you recommend one do in that instance?

In 99% of cases such as that it is likely the fault of a bad USB cable or the computer itself. First try another cable, if still the same try to get access to something like a laptop and try there, usually USB ports work fine on laptops.

Thanks. Luckily, I did not have this issue, and your thread here allowed me to root easily on the first try (I did use the OEM USB cable, having read that sometimes prevented problems for others). So thanks a lot for this thread. I am one of a presumed many who came here as this thread was spawned from a divergence on a previous root thread. Glad I did.
I did have an issue with Rom Manager while trying to flash CWM Recovery. It hung on the first attempt and I had to reboot the phone, but then it worked the second time. The only remaining anomaly I have here is that the nandroid I made is dated 1970. I'd like to know if others are having the same issue, and await some announcement for a fix. Does CWM Recovery actually have a support site? If so I'll post there about it.

And the date bug is a known problem with both CWM and TWRP recovery so far so don't worry too much for now and it won't affect it's use, just an annoyance. No ETA on a fix just yet but check in ROM Manager for an updated version possibly.

What I would actually like to see is CWM offering to let us name the nandroid when creating it, as well as where to put it. From what I have read this date issue is long standing, yet I have never encountered it before using rooted Android devices for the past 2 years until just now. I wonder if it is just this phone model causing the issue?
Does the battery need to be pulled for Odin to be accessed?
How about updating the OP to mention that you must be powered off before pressing the key combinations to enter ODIN mode. Would have saved me a lot of time.

Sadly, the date issue in CWM Touch Recovery has still not been corrected. I rename them after I make one ( but make sure not to put any spaces in the file name or it won't pass the MD5 check when using it later).

I was curious as to why backups I'd named were failing seemingly at random. Thanks for the heads up. I wonder if this applies to renaming a backup and is therefore correctable by doing so with no spaces in the new name?

[Q] I knew this day would come...Son's TF300 won't boot

I knew this day would come, I've traded PC trouble shooting for tablet troubleshooting. My son's tf300 gets to the screen where circles/dots go round and round and never gets any further. I am trying to learn everything I can and try everything I can before doing the wipe and starting over...as he has pictures and videos he'd like to save, and of course the all important saved game/app data...LOL. Anyway I'm new to tablets relatively speaking, but I've tried the volume down, and power button for doing a cold boot, same result. I've tried going to the recovery option just to see what that was about, and all I get is a flash of a screen saying something like updating android version or something like that and then the dead android with the usual red triangle and eventually the device will restart itself. I should that to him and told him he killed the android which gave me a puzzled look and then a smile...Anyway, you can't turn off the device nohow noway, except letting the battery drain completely.
I've been reading a little and learning about roots, backups, recoveries, etc... trying to come up with a plan of attack but feel like I'm spinning my wheels. Any advice here? and Can I access via PC to USB to device and just pull off his pics and videos to copy back over to the device after a wipe?
Problem started...I think when he ran the power dead completely and then had to restart...nor sure though... memories of a child are sketchy at best.

I have a solution, but your not going to like it, all data will be lost....:crying:
1. Download the latest version of Android for your tablet. Make sure you download the correct SKU version.
A. To find the SKU, go into settings, About tablet, and look for your Build Number, There are two letters (such as US,WW, TW, etc.) that is your SKU. When downloading the zip from ASUS', you must download the correct SKU zip.
2. Decompress downloaded .zip file (it will be another .zip)
3. Rename it to:
A. For the TF700 and TF300: EP201_768_SDUPDATE.zip
B. For the TF101: E101_SDUPDATE.zip
4. Make sure your MicroSD card is formatted Fat32. It must be Fat32 Format or it will not work.
5. Copy the file to (the root directory of) your MicroSD
6. Insert the MicroSD into the tablet
7. Shutdown (power off) the tablet
8. Power it on by pressing and holding VOLUME DOWN and POWER buttons simultaneously
9. When you see white text in the top left corner of the screen, release the buttons ^^ and press VOLUME UP button (on RCK, this is your recovery which should already be selected) until you see Android logo and process bar
10. Give the update process 5-10 minutes. It should not take longer than that. If it happens to run for more than 45 minutes to an hour, force shut down the tablet and see if it boots. If it does not, try rerunning steps 7-9.
Let me know if you need any help along the way.... Thx as always lj

So the RCK thing doesn't do anything unless you have SD card in to do something that's on the card?
And there's no way to access what's on the device without getting it booted all the way?
Sounds like your saving me and my son from updating from his original Android version after a wipe...Thanks

Also when your in the RCK screen.. That is called the bootloader screen....So you know if some one refers to it by its name.....
Also that is were you can find your SKU on the bootloader screen upper left in white letters... WW, US, TW ............... Make sure you get the right SKU from asus for your 300....

As far as I know it's related only to custom recovery and if You have stock one it should work. Or I'm wrong?

Yes that is correct. I just like to move people away from even thinking its an option, as I have had people with stock everything and the Wipe Data
icon has even given them trouble, its just not worth touching....LOL...Thx as always lj

Yep when I first got my tablet i was so scared about going into that menu because I learned that it was only 3-4 clicks away from a brick.

Out of curiousity...Isn't doing these steps more or less just upgrading the firmware? Like getting an update from ASUS? If so, why will it lose all the data?
I haven't mustered up the courage yet to do this yet... actually it's more like getting the time to do it.

You could try using ADB to try and pull your files. I faced a similar problem and was able to pull some of my files:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2253834
Sent from my R800i using xda-developers app.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

Apologies, I'm very rusty with this stuff now. If flashing a .blob file doesn't wipe data (I can't remember whether it does or not), perhaps you could try doing that if you're able to get into recovery?

I just gave in and did the flash procedure. Looked like it went well, now I'm watching the circles for round again for the last 10 minutes.

Just wanted to follow up on this...lj50036 is top noctch helper here. going above and beyond does not even come close to explaining what he has tried to do for me. Ultimately it was after we hit a brick wall, that I suggested flashing back to an earlier version that finally worked. I'm not convinced flashing to the latest version (like I first tried) would not work, as I didn't personally create/rename the SD card to do the flash. but re-flashing the original firmware got the tablet to boot finally. Of course all was lost other than what had been automatically backed up via google servers. Pictures/videos back to exactly one year from when the pad stopped booting were recovered. Everything before a year was gone. No game data or installs were saved. I thought maybe it had to do with a space issue, but after re-installing every app my son had before and about 1GB worth of pics/videos restored, there is still 16GB left, I doubt game/user data would have consumed that much...so I still have no idea what might have cause the pad to stop booting. Other than it was trying to do something important when he ran the battery dead. So at this point I'm having my son clean out unwanted apps, and we are going to unlock and root after a proper backup is done. Thank you to all that have had input on my dilemma. I've learned a ton.

You are welcome.
Rest assured you do have a bootloader. You may not have the bootloader interface the other Transformers have and possibly there is no way to get fastboot to work on this thing - I don't know.
There is no custom rom for this tablet, and if you do not want to loose 4G you cannot use one made for another Transformer either (no idea if that is even possible, I do not know the KL).
Your best bet is to gain root and uninstall a bunch of cr**, maybe use Greenify - I don't know. Very limited what you can do on stock....
I seem to recall that people got root with Framaroot on this thing. Google it, the info is out there. If I can find it so can you

ok let me get to the keypoints here that made me ask for help, and so you'll see that i'm not just a lazy person that doesn't use google
1) Some people they say that the KL can accept all the roms of the Tf700T. for example katkiss is saying to use one of their roms
1.a) some say that it will brick the device.
so, first question here, what will happen if i'll get a custom rom of the TF700T?
2) some people say that I should have a version of the "unlock bootloder" after unlocking with the asus app.
Well I don't have anything, I just have a small phrase which is "device unlocked" and that's it. nothing else.
3) some say on google that there is a cyanogen mod for the KL. Unfortunately cyanogenmod wiki and forum are down, so I can't find either assistance, either the files.
nothing to do here, then.
4) let's say I'll follow your guide, and i'll flash a custom rom. will I lose the 4g?
4.a) how can I get to the old rom, even original, in order to get 4g back?
5) about root: i managed to root it a long time ago. Unfortunately, even disabling most of the package and all the bloatware, the device really sucks.
that's the main reason why I abandoned there 3 years ago. now it's full of dust, and as I've been working a lot, I wanted to get it back with basic functions, but without waiting 10 seconds from the moment i press on APPS BUTTON and the actual time for which I see the apps page.
so, here's my google searching experience.

I'd say the first question is: Is there a compatible custom recovery for the KL and how to install it? I do not know that there ever was a custom recovery made for the KL and using one made for another Transformer may or may not brick your device. I do not see a single post from anyone stating that they successfully installed a custom rom or recovery on the KL, so my guess is: It cannot be done unless you develop a custom recovery for this tablet and find a way to flash it.
2) some people say that I should have a version of the "unlock bootloder" after unlocking with the asus app.

Well, there's the first difference to other Transformers: Most of them have a bootloader menu from where you can boot into recovery or into Android and perform a data wipe. Booted into the bootloader you also have fastboot access. The KL does not seem to have any of this. Do you have fastboot working on your PC? Try it, boot with Vol down or Vol Up and then check if you have fastboot access to the tablet. I doubt it....

I've only seen post users expressing hope or wishes for CM for the KL. I don't think there ever was a working CM rom for the KL

You cannot follow my guide unless you figure out a way to get fastboot working. You could try to flash TWRP recovery using their app or Flashify, but which TWRP?? Which version might be compatible with your bootloader? Nobody knows it seems. But heck! What have you got to loose? You are not going to use the tablet in its current state anyway, so if you brick it - who cares?
But to answer your question: Yes, you would definitely loose the 4G. The software for your modem has its own partition and no rom made for the wifi-only Transformers even knows this partition exists, let alone about the hardware

Again: Untested territory. If you had a custom recovery or fastboot you might be able to flash the Asus firmware in either. Maybe
you won't believe me
I was away for 1 month
got back
installed framaroot
installed greenify
now it runs with like 10 apps total (including the keyboard)
tablet STILL UNUSABLE, takes 1 minutes to open youtube, 2 mins to open play store
Id really like to brick it rather than keep it like that

tried but the max i get is the screen wghere
"press volume button to select
1) enter sd down mode
2) factory reset
3) exit update mode
press power button to enter"
so i then flashed with flashify, read after

I then flashed the TWMR
when i rebooted it said
"no usb connected"
i then connected to the PC
and it say
"READY FOR DOWNLOAD" with an android picture
i can't boot it up again
what should i do now?
when i now do the FASTBOOT DEVICES command on pc, I see the serial of the asus
it's the first time fastboot sees it
I tried doing "fastboot update kitkatnougatellaxxxx.zip"
but it say that android-info.txt & android-product.txt not find so not flashable
what now, then? I can't even use it with the old OS
You need to boot into the TWRP that you flashed, hold the volume button down and press the power button (hold both) until you get the fastboot screen, the square with [RCK] should be blinking. Now press the volume up button to enter the TWRP recovery console. - NP

best bet would be to do a factory reset, I don't believe this rom will work on the KL model. - NP
it doesn't even allow the factory reset, as if i press it it gives the NO USB CONNECTED screen
i'd say it's bricked

I can't
I mean it doesn't get to the next menu
I've been trying to find the threads on how to re-flash the stock ASUS ROM from the SD cardseeing this is the only way to get the TF700k working but I can't find it know. It involved have the ROM in the root directory on the SDcard and giving it a specific name, this name triggers the tablet to update itself. - NP
