ext partition hidden MicroSD - General Questions and Answers

Hello to anyone , this is mine first thread here and to begin , sorry for my English because 'm Italian..
Today I had a problem with installing Android on Nand.
The problem does not affect the operation of Android, but I can not understand why ,after partitioning Micro Sd Card with EXT format , Android does not recognize any SD in the slot-card.I reformatted all the Sd in fat32 and now i can see it in my HTC HD2..I believe that it is not necessary made one EXTpartition but i cannot understand the cause this happens..
Bye to the next time..

ext is generally done to create room for apps via apps2sd..
so if ur version of android do not support ext then dont ext ur sd!!

Bro it doesnt actually matter (though it should have worked for u as u r in gingerbread)!!!!
i know typhoon rom is beautiful,, i have seen it..!!
bt updated version doesnt mean latest version coz the rom developers work upon image files of an operating system.. the image file in the first relese is generally the same in the updated version in ur developers post!!
ANYWZ WHAT IS MY VIEW IS THAT U R USING AN SD CARD WHICH CAME ALONG WITH UR MOBILE!! GENERALLY THESE ARE CLASS 2 SD CARDS AND USING HIGH PERFORMANCE ROMS LIKE TYPHOON AFFECTS THEM A LOT!
so my suggestion is:
1. format ur sd card once from ur computer
2. if still dont work then check the sd card for its class. the number is generally printed inside a circle.. if no number is present then its a class 2 sd card and u should change it to better ur experiences!
note:- there nothing wrong with ur phone(as far as i can c)!!

partition SD card
Hi, I'm Italian too
Actually I can't find a good reason for your problem, the only suggestion I can make you is to try a different approach to partition your SD card. For instance, the one that worked on my device (motorola xt720) is the one explained very clearly in the first two videos (thanks to reverendkjr) that you find on youtube if you type "8 minute Linux".
It's easy if you follow all the step one by one, I'm not an expert, but it's pretty easy. Hope it will help you!

hi all
looks like impossible with android phones as i saw. I also want to do that and store big files (up of 4 Gp) on my external sd card.
you are obliged to first create a FAT32 on sd card and after a ext4 partition but i did'nt at this time find how to use it ( i mean mount in file system and see it and copy files to it ). I am under linux so no problem between pc and smartphone
There is some solution to create partition on internal sd , but ext4 should be less than 2Go !!!! and will be use to move apps on it with apps like apps2sd but not to copy files on it !!!
that's a big hole for android but ????
if you have found solution i will take it !

question about the SD

hello..i want to ask u guys about the SD ..
someone told me that the SD will not work in any other device but the u r using..
is that true?
thx
well no unless you are somehow using the nativ encryption in the card then unless the password or whatever are using the card cant be used never heard anybody using it though
so if i changed my device (i'm using an i-mate) in the futrue to nokia or whteer can i still use the same SD ?
yep the nokia of cause would not be able to read ½ the data if it was written for the imate
i mean if it was like that there would be no such thing as a sdcard reader which many of us use to get data to the sdcards
Yeah in your case the different operating systems from iMate and Nokia means the data (files saved) on the SD card would be different but the SD hardware is compatible to both.
That allows us to use more than one card in our digicams, ppc's etc and swap them around as we like.
Ed
ok what can i do to get my data saved on the SD (from the i-mate) on other operating systems ?
even the images like JPG won't work?
thx
I'd suggest you could try to copy the files you want from the SD card to your PC, then format the SD card in your new device, then copy the files back to the SD.
Ed
so lets say my i-mate is broken.,,
and i havn't copy my data to the pc..
and try to put the sd on other device...will it work?
even if its on a ppc?
If the device you try to read it in has the same operating system as the device which write to the SD in the first place then yes. For example I'm pretty sure any PPC will read an SD card written to by another PPC.
Or if it was written to by a PPC then you can also read it in a windows based PC using an SD card reader.
Ed
aha..
but i don't think that the data like JPG's and AVI's , MPEG's....etc will not work?
will it work?
and thx again

[Q] Re-Use SD Card

Hi,
Hoping someone can help, although from what I've found online it seems as tho I'm SOL. I have a 16GB card that I was using on a focus. I'm not gonna use the focus and wanted to keep the card, format it and I don't care about erasing the content- just as long as I can reuse it.
Is this possible at all or has anyone found a workaround way of doing this? I would hate to just toss the card out pretty much if it's worthless.
Thanks in advance for any help...
Use a Nokia Symbian Phone with micro Sd Slot to Format it.
First after insert the card ignore the message of Crypted Card or so.
Then go to the options menu and format the card. After This u can use ist in any device

nice thanks...I'll try to find a way to get my hands on one. Any other methods in case I can't get a symbian one?
I've used my girlfriend Olympus camera and my Nikon camera to format my card (Centon 16GB) on a few occasions. But I have to trick the card to get it to be detected in the cameras. If I just put the card in the camera normally it doesn't detect it, but when I do the following steps it always works.
1. Hard reset (format) my phone using the 3 hardware buttons without the card in it.
2. Turn the phone off and install the sd card.
3. Hard reset (format) a 2nd time using the 3 hardware buttons, but with the card still in.
4. Turn the phone off and take out the card. Do not reboot, you must turn the phone off after the 2nd hard reset.
5. Insert the card into a camera and try a format.
Not sure why, but if I reboot after hard resetting, my camera's cannot detect or format the card. Its possible that the encryption isn't written until you reboot after a card is formatted.

This seems ... really extreme. I hope in the future Microsoft releases some sort of service tool (like the one for the NoDo update) that will allow recognition and format of cards on Windows.

and you've tried this on a real windows phone 7 device not the hd2 convert? there is a huge diff
If you can find a Mac with a card reader, then you can clear out the partition with the Mac Disk Utility.
You can use pretty much anything - I tried it on Windows Mobile (HTC formating SD card utility - worked fine), Android (SGS with FroYo - had to press Format twice - worked fine), desktop WIndows and SD card in card reader - with using diskpart (list disk, select disk X, select partition 1, delete, select partition 1, delete, create partition blabla - worked fine too)
Haven't tried Linux box

You have an HD2, if you have an official WP7 device the card is set up very different. So far the only way known to "normalize" the SD card is to use a Nokia phone or odd tricks with random cameras.

Hello M8...
HD2 runs wp7 and the formating and partition of the sd card its the same with any wp7 device...
Its working ... i change my first sd a 4gb card that i had installed wp7 with another bigger one (8gb).
The tools that i have post, can delete any wp7 partion
You can even copy partition to a usb hard disk for backup before you delete it.
And for this to be resolved:
1. Can you please get the minitool partition wizard and try to delete that partition and see whats happen ????
2. Please report back your findings ??

partition is NOT the same. For hd2 converts running windows phone 7, 200 mb partition of the hd is partitioned to be recognized by windows, therefore making any low level formatting utility work to regain the initial amount of memory as if it was new. BUT for real wp7 devices, the partition scheme is different and cannot be recognized by any computer. Making the partition tool completely and utterly useless...
For non converts (HD2 devices) the only way is to use a nokia device. Otherwise you will be SOL

Sensboston ... You are right .... I stand corrected.
Sinse as i already said i have an HD2 running WP7 i was under the impression that is the same.
No its not....Its different on the HD2 format for wp7..
And seems that the Nokia solution its the one that works for now...
Now because of this i found the time to learn more about wp7 sd cards.

Good catch; probably, mods should copypaste that article to WP7 FAQ to prevent future speculations about this topic.
Back on this ...
Seems that SD Formatter 3.0 has the abillity to format WP7 Cards ????
This member here says that he did it with the that app.
Can anyone confirm this ????

I have a 16GB Kingston MicroSD that was paired with my first Samsung Focus. I've tried all the apps listed here with multiple computers, external card readers, etc, and nothing will unlock the card so far.

I was able to reformat a 32gb card that I used on my HD7 using one of the Nokia Express Music phones. Forgot the exact model. It will ask for a password but you can always hit cancel and then go through the formatting

Moving apps to ext. SD card

Hello all
this is my first android phone.
i managed to move some apps to sd card, but only to the internal.
How can i get them to the external sd card ? the ext. card is a mount point inside the internal one, thats what i found out.
Cheers
Lorien
At this stage it cant be done.
Oh, so is it a specific problem with the LG FW or is it the current Android OS ?

It's a limitation of the Android File System in general, not of froyo, gingerbread or ice cream sandwich. This is how the OS works.
What you can do is to go the the phone settings then programs then app manager and there click one by one the apps and choose to move to the SD card. You will notice that you will still have a portion of the app running from the phone memory. This is something that you have to live with for the time being but at least the half of the app should have been moved to the SD so at the end of the day you will gain some space.
Yes thats what i already did, worked great, but i do still have a almost empty ext. sd card. All the apps i moved are still on the internal sd card.
How about using apps2ext ? This is a modified version of the original (pre froyo) apps2sd that uses a "hidden" ext2, 3 or 4 partition on the SD card. I can only find it as part of custom roms. I'm sure it needs root to work too?
Anyone know if that would work?

I think we might have success with that actually. I will give it a try and I will let you know.
Any progress in this matter ? My internal SD Card is already full ! Have to start removing apps to install others.
I think those Android OS limitations are pretty wierd, so the ext. card slot is just for photos, videos on an android phone then ?
I did try to use darktremor on this phone but it won't work on stock firmware. I think that we need to wait for CM7 before we are able to install the whole app on the external SD.

The main problem is not the apps themselves. So Darktremor's A2SD would not help. The problem is, the extra files for large games are automatically downloaded to internal sd memory. Which is limited to 7GB. New games require more than 500 MB's each, so 7 Megs would be enough for many of us, but not enough for some of us.
It is certainly enough for me right now, but you cant see what future brings.
Hi guys,
I'm having this problem now.
Basically, my internal memory is being used by don't know what and I have left around 400mb.
The problem is that I cannot download more 3D games, they require around 500mb each!
I have tried to delete photos, videos and apps that I don't use but even like that it's not enough.
So now, I have a empty SD Card of 16GB and a phone/system that doesn't let me use that free space for "nothing".
BTW I did transfer the internal apps to the SD card, but very little changed.
Does anyone managed to find a solution for it? how can they sell android phones claiming that you can expand the memory of it if you are not able to use that memory for apps?
I already feel sorry for those that have the Evo 3D which apparently comes with 1GB internal memory.
And how can I move the 3D games to the SD card?
i think we have to wait until firmware update .. right now still behide 2.2.2 not even on 2.3 yet .. so i think we could move all app to ext card until 2.3 or higher.. i have try all the app out there .. not even one of them working .. you can move to internal memory but not ext sd card ..
you can also resolve this problem by switching internal and external memory. this works fine for the phone but messes up mass storage mode in windows! so you will find problems mounting your sd-card in windows - so you have to use alternatives for file transfer (ssh, ftp, adb) - means this is pretty much for advanced users only

[Q] Impossible to partition my new micro sd card 64gb

Hello, i have a problem with my Galaxy Tab 2.7.0 (GT-P3110) with omni-4.4.4-20140820-p3110-NIGHTLY rom installed.
I have bought a SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS IT - MB-MPCGC EU (Samsung microSDXC 64GB Class 10 ) micro sd card and I used it out of the box in my PAD without need to format it.
(in Storage i have found it under SD CARD tab (Total Space 58.45 GB not sure if this is ok) but i don't have the option for Formatting it (only Unmount and after it Erase or Mount)
I can see it with Windows 7 via USB MTP mode and copy files on it but not formatting it
I have tested this card with Sdtools and Sdcardtester on the tab without any problem
Now my problem is that i want to use Link2sd to move my apps on the Sd card but i have no way to make the 2 needed partitions on the it
I have tried to see if Mini Tool Partition would able to see the card from the tab's USB in MTP mode without success, i have tried to use a Sd card reader directly on my Pc with the same result (with another microd sd i was able to have it connected in Windows but this card is only 4 gb)
I have tried this also on a different PC without any luck
I tried to make partition on the card in recovery mode (tried with TWRP_2.7.1.2 and PhilZ-Touch-Recovery_6.57.5 and CWM_6.0.5.0) but in none of the 3 i have found the Partition SD card option inside the Advanced menu...
So after trying everything i'm lost
If anyone have any advice or can give me any help on this i will appreciate it

With Aparted (found in the Google Play store) i was able to check the card file system (the app told me that was FAT32 ) and to make 2 partitions
1 Fat32 and 1 ext4 but i still have all the same problems as before also with Link2sd not letting me move apps from the internal memory to the sd but only link them

I was thinking that my english was so bad that i was misunderstanding your first post
I tried that program before but it is not working for me cause i can't get the sd card working in Windows so i can't format it there
Still i was able to solve the big part of my problem because with Aparted launched on the tablet i made the 2 partitions requested from Link2sd to use the function Create Link that will help me a lot
Now i just need to know the best size to have in the 2 partitions. I'm still unable to move all the app but maybe sooner or later someone will find a solution to this .

Your English is just fine
The dying honestly depends on what files you need on your sdcard compared to the source the apps you plan to move to your sdcard will take up. I'd either make them both 32GB or one 16 gb and one 48 gb, the larger one obviously for whichever partition needs to be bigger.

I recently joined your forum(today ) and I made this thread because I couldn't find out a solution.
I use a Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S and I want to partition my SD Card for more internal space...I did it! But it only works on CM 12 or above... I don't want just to make a second partition and send the apps there...I want as it worked on cm 12... second partition was recognized as internal space...on phone settings it was sawing 1.72 GB of internal storage and no 420 MB as the ordinary for this smartphone is...Now...I 've tried with many ways to do the same thing on cm11(KitKat) because it was a little bit laggy on cm12 and I want the phone to run smoothly...But it doesn't wok...I can see my second partition on APP2SD but the phone doesn't recognize it as official internal storage...What can I do to fix this? Thank you for your time and hope you can help me!
I partitioned my sd card with minitool partition wizard...the main sd space was FAT32 and the second partition was ext4.
Sry for my bad English I am from Greece.
