[Q] Re-Use SD Card - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Hoping someone can help, although from what I've found online it seems as tho I'm SOL. I have a 16GB card that I was using on a focus. I'm not gonna use the focus and wanted to keep the card, format it and I don't care about erasing the content- just as long as I can reuse it.
Is this possible at all or has anyone found a workaround way of doing this? I would hate to just toss the card out pretty much if it's worthless.
Thanks in advance for any help...

Use a Nokia Symbian Phone with micro Sd Slot to Format it.
First after insert the card ignore the message of Crypted Card or so.
Then go to the options menu and format the card. After This u can use ist in any device

nice thanks...I'll try to find a way to get my hands on one. Any other methods in case I can't get a symbian one?

I've used my girlfriend Olympus camera and my Nikon camera to format my card (Centon 16GB) on a few occasions. But I have to trick the card to get it to be detected in the cameras. If I just put the card in the camera normally it doesn't detect it, but when I do the following steps it always works.
1. Hard reset (format) my phone using the 3 hardware buttons without the card in it.
2. Turn the phone off and install the sd card.
3. Hard reset (format) a 2nd time using the 3 hardware buttons, but with the card still in.
4. Turn the phone off and take out the card. Do not reboot, you must turn the phone off after the 2nd hard reset.
5. Insert the card into a camera and try a format.
Not sure why, but if I reboot after hard resetting, my camera's cannot detect or format the card. Its possible that the encryption isn't written until you reboot after a card is formatted.

This seems ... really extreme. I hope in the future Microsoft releases some sort of service tool (like the one for the NoDo update) that will allow recognition and format of cards on Windows.

and you've tried this on a real windows phone 7 device not the hd2 convert? there is a huge diff

If you can find a Mac with a card reader, then you can clear out the partition with the Mac Disk Utility.

You can use pretty much anything - I tried it on Windows Mobile (HTC formating SD card utility - worked fine), Android (SGS with FroYo - had to press Format twice - worked fine), desktop WIndows and SD card in card reader - with using diskpart (list disk, select disk X, select partition 1, delete, select partition 1, delete, create partition blabla - worked fine too)
Haven't tried Linux box

You have an HD2, if you have an official WP7 device the card is set up very different. So far the only way known to "normalize" the SD card is to use a Nokia phone or odd tricks with random cameras.

Hello M8...
HD2 runs wp7 and the formating and partition of the sd card its the same with any wp7 device...
Its working ... i change my first sd a 4gb card that i had installed wp7 with another bigger one (8gb).
The tools that i have post, can delete any wp7 partion
You can even copy partition to a usb hard disk for backup before you delete it.
And for this to be resolved:
1. Can you please get the minitool partition wizard and try to delete that partition and see whats happen ????
2. Please report back your findings ??

partition is NOT the same. For hd2 converts running windows phone 7, 200 mb partition of the hd is partitioned to be recognized by windows, therefore making any low level formatting utility work to regain the initial amount of memory as if it was new. BUT for real wp7 devices, the partition scheme is different and cannot be recognized by any computer. Making the partition tool completely and utterly useless...
For non converts (HD2 devices) the only way is to use a nokia device. Otherwise you will be SOL

Sensboston ... You are right .... I stand corrected.
Sinse as i already said i have an HD2 running WP7 i was under the impression that is the same.
No its not....Its different on the HD2 format for wp7..
And seems that the Nokia solution its the one that works for now...
Now because of this i found the time to learn more about wp7 sd cards.

Good catch; probably, mods should copypaste that article to WP7 FAQ to prevent future speculations about this topic.

Back on this ...
Seems that SD Formatter 3.0 has the abillity to format WP7 Cards ????
This member here says that he did it with the that app.
Can anyone confirm this ????

I have a 16GB Kingston MicroSD that was paired with my first Samsung Focus. I've tried all the apps listed here with multiple computers, external card readers, etc, and nothing will unlock the card so far.

I was able to reformat a 32gb card that I used on my HD7 using one of the Nokia Express Music phones. Forgot the exact model. It will ask for a password but you can always hit cancel and then go through the formatting

For start try the easy things.
Turn off your phone. Pop out your Storage card & clean it. Also blow (with your mouth ) in the slot. Put the card in again & turn on the phone.
If this doesn't work try & see if the card is working with a card reader (I hope that you have one). With the card reader back up your data & format it at FAT32.
If the phone still doesn't see it try formating it at FAT.
If nothing of the above works & also the card reader doesn't even see the card, then you have a corrupted / damaged card .
If nothing of the above works & the card reader can see the card, hard reset your phone & then try again. Of course with the hard reset you will lost all your data .
I hope something of the above to work for you...

You can do it only with a card reader or another phone .
I had the lousy 8125 for far too long. I never could get it to recognize a memory card. AT&T pushed the phone out to the market too early with a processor that choked on the OS alone,....that is why the 8525 came out just a short 3 months later.

[Q] Micro sd card 16gb

Hello i have one problem ... i have 16gb micro sd card and i cant format it .. if i format in pc .. all files is gone .. but if i take it in mobile(htchd2) all deleted files are back ... i cant copy anything or delete .. if format in mobile .. says cant delete ... unable to complete ...
please for answer how to result it ... thx for help
(sorry for bad english)
Seems like the format does not turn out very well. Please tell me, what file system are you formatting to? And are you sure your phone does support 16GB micro sd cards? If all else fails you could try a third party partition manager (Partition magic, acronis) to format the card. Even better would be to format it using linux, this works most of the time.
in pc i have win 7 ... formating (think FAT32) and i was use that card before im usin it about 1year ... in that time is everything ok ... but now i cant format ... (my phone support 32gb cards.) its HTC hD2 ( something info about phone ..) SPL 2,08 hspl 8g xe ... i before used AMandroid 2.3.4 cyan...
hmm ok, I suggest you try to use partition magic (you can find it using torrent networks etc. like thepiratebay.org). For some reason your pc just does not format it correctly which is highly unusual. So, in conclusion, if your pc and your phone do not want to format it like it's supposed to. Try using some third party software.
Also, isn't it sufficient to just delete all the files on the card? If so, use your phone to do this, it might also work and it would be the easiest option.
i try many programs ... but dont any effect ... and i try delete by ... MAGLDR v1.13 but nothing ... card maybe locked... ?? it is?? i try next day unlock it by reduction or i buy new card .... its esiest way .. to result it ...

Warez isn't tolerated here.
You can try and delete the partition in windows disk management. Right click my computer, manage. If you still have issues it's almost certainly a duff card.

Sorry, I forgot for a moment
Bump for this
I am having the same problem. I have a 32gb micro sd card that Im trying to use but I cant delete anything off of it or put any files on it. When I do try to delete items, it takes the time to delete the files and then removes them from the list, but when the card is put back into my phone the files are still there. This is also the case when I try to add music. The computer will take time to write the files, but in the end no new files are created
I have tried using windows to format it as well as SanDisks formatter. I also did a check disk in windows command prompt but no errors were returned.
It should also be noted that when I tried to reformat with Sandisks reformatter, I was using the adapter in my sd card slot and it said that the card was locked and to slide the switch. I tried it with a different card reader and the same error occurred. when I put the card into the phone it was "able to" reformat it. but the same problem is occurring.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions
stupid questioN; but do you have activated some kind of write protection? ^^

Q) how to format FAT32 64gb card ? can't write/delete files.

Was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what I can possibly do??
The card came as EXFAT, but most roms only support FAT32.
I formatted the card to FAT32 which was fine .. but after copying a few files the card now refuses to write or delete files. I can still open and view media that's on it but that's about it. I can't even re-format it, it will say the disk can not be formated or write error. The card isn't corrupt though, I copied around 30gbs of video on it when it was in EXFAT partition before. J
I'm using an SD adaptor into my card reader, but yes I have ensured the lock switch is off.
edit - oh also, when you place the card into the phone it'll say that the card is damaged/blank.
Any help would be appreciated
Cheers,

Make sure you format it in the phone
Every time I place the card in, it will say the card is damaged or blank
Then it tries to format it but then goes through the same loop of saying it's damaged/blank

pretty much - there's nothing you can do. I decided to email Sandisk and here's their response:
I understand that the error that appear after format is “write protected”. First we would like to apologize for the inconvenience.
I understand that you are getting write protection error while accessing the flash drive. The flash drive has detected a potential fault and become “write protected” to prevent data loss. There is no method to fix this. You will need to back-up your data and replace the flash drive.
So you have to RMA it. I'm abit confused because others on XDA have successfully covnerted their 64gb cards to FAT32 without any issues.
Could it be a faulty batch of sd cards?.

[Q] [HELP!] Micro Sdcard corrupted

So I had this 8gb micro Sdcard that came with my phone and for Christmas I got a 16gb one. I had a lot of precious stuff on the older 8gb, so I put it into an adapter and connected it to my PC, planning to backup the contents and then put it on the 16gb. But when i connected it in, it said "This card needs to be formated before using". I first i thought the adapter was broken, so I put the micro sdcard back into my android phone so I could connect my phone to the computer and do it that way but when it turned on it said "Sdcard ready to remove". The phone wouldn't recognise it either!
I have already put other micro sdcards in the adapter and they work perfectly.
I have a lot of precious stuff on the micro sdcard so if there is a way to fix it without wiping everything, I'd be really happy to hear it.
Will give the person who answered best thanks in all of their last 15 posts.
Maybe try disk manager on your PC and see what format is says the card is..
otherwise try the phone again and again hopefully it will work. Ive had that before and a combination of playing with disk manager and the phone I managed to get the stuff off my card

i would try inserting it into your phone several times to try to get it to catch..also reboot phone while card is inserted..if you have to format the card you can still get everything off of it by using a program like "recuva" .. ive used it many times and it works like a charm..nothing is ever erased on a sd card..its only overwritten..so as long as you havent overwritten anything on the card you can easily get it back..formatting will not overwrite anything
Connect your card to pc, open mini partition tool wizard. Click on your memory in program and next open.
I tried putting the sdcard back into my phone several times and always didn't work . I went onto diskmanager and see screenshot below for info (it's g/ drive). I then tried formatting with various settings and always got a failure see second screenshot.

Hey. Thanks for the reply, I installed that program but it confuses me. How do i access my sdcard with it?
My sdcard is not partitioned or used for swap or anything.
Oh and I've tried formatting with exfat, fat, fat32 and NFTS and always fails
Do you see your sd card in this program? If yes try wipe volume
I checked your screens and your card is RAW- file system is broken or is unknown to the windows , try this:
1
close ALL your programs, insert your sd card to your computer and ONLY WAIT,(15 min.) do nothing, dont touch mouse (weird? yes but your computer will try to repair file system, fot 2gb is less 5-10 minutes, but your is 8 gb class???, that wait more)
2 (optional, but you should try 3 point)
Format your sd with windows installerr (format it during window installation using windows setup disc) you can cancell instalation after format without probles
3
If still nothing (after 25 minutes) try this program http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/index.html - IT IS LAST OPTION WITHOUT SPEND MONEY
Tell me if it worked.

sd card write problem

hi yesterday I unexpectedly remove sd card (samsung) without unmounting from htc u11 now I can not write to it. can not format the sd card from phone as well from pc. recently I updated my htc u11 to oreo also. I dont know is it because of unexpectedly remove of sd card or oreo update because I dont remember that after oreo update I use(means download something) my sd card. If anyone have the solution thanx in advance.
How old was sd card? Could be just bad luck, and card died, happen to me. And what pc - win version you tried formated? It should let you do it whitout any problems.
If the external sd card was being written to at the time it was disconnected then it will be broken. If it wasn't then try to recover it using a pc.
The oreo update won't have changed anything with the external sd card so you can rule that out.
Sometimes, when you pull out the memory card unexpectedly (also the pen drives or even memory sticks on pc) you can lock the card. It denies to write on it. This happens due to the chip controller of the memory card. The only solution is to repair it on PC with special software tools from manufacturer or from russian/chinese/vietnamese forums which can reset that lock 'flag'. That sw contains drivers to raw access the chip controller.

Try to search something like that: 'mass production utility', usually under this name you can find utilities to access the chips. It is time consuming to find what chip/controller your card use and find an utility which can access that chip since samsung do not publish such a tool...
You can try ChipGenius or another sw to find details, you may digg in sites like 'http://www.flashdrive-repair.com' to find a way of repair.
