Just read this on the way in to work this morn...
Samsung Mobile Canada has now officially announced their plans for Android 2.2 on Canadian Galaxy S Devices on their Facebook page. These devices include the Vibrant, Captivate and Fascinate and we will see an update in December with the Fascinate update coming in 2011.
Currently working to provide a tested and secure upgrade experience in Canada, the team is hard at working getting the updates out to customers.
The releases will happen as follows:
* Samsung Vibrant from Bell – Update in mid-December
* Samsung Captivate from Rogers – Update in mid-December
* Samsung Fascinate from TELLUS – Update in early 2011
Although we would have liked to see the update sooner, at least users of Galaxy S devices in Canada will get their hands on Froyo before Gingerbread becomes the most used operating system.

Well this just sets the path for us to have cooked roms. Once they get official froyo, it would probably be a breeze to port. Or that might not even be necessary and their roms might work with ours from the get go.
I so excitied for this as i originally ordered and recieved the Sony X10 but had done the research on it and sony was slacking in the software update 2.1 which the Samsung already had....so i sent the POS back and got the Captivate with rogers and am now going to be able to update to 2.2 before the X10 will offically be released with 2.1 lol Sony's a Joke

That joke got 2.1 from Rogers last weekend... 2.1 global/nordic a few weeks back and that works well on the rogers phone. Also Sony has confirmed (after lying to us for most of 2010) that they will add multi-touch to the next update coming in Q1 2011.

Personally, I don't see the point in getting the x10 over captivate since captivate has better specs in everything (except the cameras).

Actually the multitouch on the X10 is a joke.... it is a complete balls out comedy fest.
The digitisers for the x10 are so low in resolution that they have develop algorithms for the phone to actually understand what the user is trying to do.
At the moment the development appears to suck. Multitouch on the x10 will never ever be a pleasant experience. Forget about being able to play Sonic the Hedgehog.
According to this article: http://mobilesyrup.com/2010/12/10/s...2-2-might-be-released-later-in-december-2010/
We may see Froyo later in December. But if you are like me who have been waiting for the official release and not the leaked roms, and have been searching "when, when, when, when." It may just be here. But just like the past, Samsung has failed to deliver on the date when they said: October, November, December. Now it is late December.
I will be waiting.
Keep in mind this is for Canadian carriers.
also keep in mind samsung always says one day and it ends up being forever later!
Also keep in mind that the article used the word "MIGHT"... not "WILL".
well it's already officialy out for Bell (Vibrant)... so I'm guessing Rogers (Captivate) should make the move soon...

“If you are an owner of a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate (SGH-i896) or Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate 3G+ (SGH-T959), the upgrade software for these phones is currently being tested and we are working on a release for later in December 2010.”
Sounds like "will" to me. Only thing missing is when.
I would actually be impressed with Rogers if they got it done before AT&T did as AT&T has had the phone a few months longer. I'm on Rogers, with an AT&T phone, I'll take whichever release comes first.

my MIGHT vs WILL is for "later in December" as stated in the title of the article - Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate OS 2.2 might be released “later in December 2010″
Samsung always said "By the end of the year" for US Galaxy S phones. They never promised any month for US phones.

This statement contradicts itself.
I think if we get Froyo by Dec 31 at 11:59pm we will be very lucky. As to Gingerbread that might come in 2012 if at all. I really dont understand the foot dragging by the US carriers. Unless ATT is locking out more functions
I'm thinking how we can all aim our fireworks for New Years at Samsung's headquarter. Or AT&T as well.
We will just have to wait and see, If history holds true, (like they did with WM builds) the Offical update from ATT will be nothing more then the leaked rom we have been using for months with a few things removed or added. Like the lock out for tethering without a tethering plan and such.
AT&T is like,
"hey look, Google just sent us froyo, should we roll out the update to our payed customers?"
"No. We have to add our bloatware first, that is the most important thing"
"Well they've been waiting awhile now..."
"So? We'll have it done in a couple months"
"The captivate will be obsolete by then..."
"Oh ya...oh well, this isn't Burger King, you don't "have it your way"

I'll give odds that it won't be out til next year.

I just want to get some sort of leaked 2.2.1 build so we can get some epic levels of custom roms that are stable...

On another note, AT&T doesn't add the bloatware. Samsung, based on the handset requirements they get from AT&T add the bloatware.

You are splitting hairs - AT&T is the driver behind the added bloatware. Samsung only does because AT&T requires it. If they had their way, they would have one ROM that worked on all carriers. They would still add Touchwiz to differentiate themselves from vanilla Android - and for average joe consumer this is a successful strategy. AT&T wouldn't add the bloatware (force Samsung to add it) if they didn't generate a decent amount of revenue on it.

Im not to excited anymore about froyo(Don't get me wrong i absolutely love the captivate). Samsung just needs to go ahead and roll out their new phone with Gingerbread. I am am waiting for that day... I just dont see anything else happening with the captivate besides froyo.
So I'm wondering... with the recent news of Gingerbread being ported to the Galaxy S from the Nexus S, will the Mesmerize ever be getting it? It seems that the CDMA phones are like the black sheep compared to GSM, and out of the CDMA SGS phones, the Mesmerize is the black sheep in the shadow if the Fascinate.
So do we have any hope of ever seeing Gingerbread on it?
I sure hope so. Just skip froyo and go straight to gingerbread.
Atleast you guys have a section on the forum... The Samsung Galaxy S Showcase has nearly no support in contrast.. Though i'm seeing alot of Mesmerize sys file matches..
So why would anyone spend time working on Froyo for the Mez (or others) when 2.3 is out there?

There are lots of reasons why a company wouldn't throw away time, money, and resources spent on a project that they had already completed and shipped to a provider. First off, their end is done except fixing bugs. If Samsung, or any other company for that matter, stopped working on 1.6 because 2.1 was just around the corner, then that phone would be obsolete before it got it's first update. We've only been waiting a couple of months for froyo. Why would you want to wait another 6 months to a year for gingerbread to be our first update? Let's get froyo in our phones, and then we can all hope like hell that gingerbread hits for us before we've gotten rid of the Mes for something new.

See list at link above.
Thunderbolt not listed! Lets hope the dev team shows up HTC yet again.
I'm not surprised, considering we *just* officially got Gingerbread. I'm sure ICS roms will pop up within days of its release though.
It will be interesting to see what they do with Sense on top of ICS though.
even if it was listed for early 2012, we'd never get it before 2013 anyway
meh...who cares.
The Devs are 100 steps ahead of OEM anyways...
Most of us probably ran GB within a month of owning the phone IF you got it at release...and now OEM just put it out.
I'm sure ICS from OEM will be bloated anywho, I'd rather have a fit and trim ROM.
yeah who gives a crap about OEM anything anyway. it's all about what the devs give us.
even if i/we move up to the rezound or whatever, we're just going to root it a.s.a.p. and load the first ics rom we get a hold of.
if you're even concerned about getting an OEM anything then what are you doing on XDA.
I don't understand why people complain about their gingerbread upgrades and such. My CDMA Desire was released on US Cell in August 2010. We didn't get Froyo until Feb 2011. We still don't have the Froyo kernel source so there are no unofficial gingersense ports.
The GSM Desire was released in March 2010, got Froyo over the summer of 2010 and got gingerbread earlier this year. Talk about unfair.
The CDMA one was released 5 months later and got support for it dropped about 6 months after release.
This is why I am switching to verizon for the Rezound.

I think it's mainly because it was a "flagship" phone and was promised to be getting GB from launch but it took roughly half of a year, and was buggy upon its first release, while other phones had received GB already. That, plus people like to complain ... it's also kind of the nature of the smartphone biz, there's a shiny new one coming out every few weeks, so it makes things appear to get outdated more quickly.
yeah I saw this earlier today and got a little discouraged but then I realized that once ICS gets released, there will be much better ROMS than HTC's stock one
This shows just how much we NEED the devs!
Yeah I prolly wouldn't run an official ICS for my bolt now that I am rooted, so far all the roms I have ran (3 now) have been better than stock, but I am lucky person for what I have seen and not had any issues with my phone even stock.
I'm running the rooted, debloated stock rom and it works just fine. Most htc widgets/ apps are either frozen or uninstalled and MS 3D is on top. Also using Imoysen's kernel. I find that it runs about as fast as any of the custom ROMs I've played with without having the custom aosp rom problems of no gps and no nfl app.
Has anyone looked at what it would take to port CM9 to this tablet yet?
I would love "ICS" on my 7.0 plus!! Please!!

As I understand Samsung is releasing ICS during the fist quarter, no release date yet.
I don't think developers are interesting in working on it until it's released. I'm running ICS on my phone, Samsung hasn't released the drivers so the developers have put in a lot of hours and hard work, it's not perfect but getting close. The battery life was terrible at first due to not having the proper drivers but over time it has gotten pretty decent. A working GPS is also an issue, again due to lack of proper drivers. I think the main difference ICS will never be released for my phone unlike our tabs.

I seriously doubt samsung will release ICS for our g-tab Q1. If we're lucky it will be Q2, but i'm thinking worst case scenario Q3.

Samsung has a laughably bad reputation as far as updates go, if they aren't the worse then they are close to it. I would like to see ICS hit Q1 but I will expect it sometime this summer or fall.

Not to derail but you can argue that all android manufacturers are slow with updates, Samsung gets a lot of attention because they sell a lot of phones.
With that said, Samsung is painfully slow and I think this device stands little to no chance of a Q1 update, just my opinion.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Whenever a carrier, (e.g. AT&T, TMobile, Sprint, Verizon) gets involved, the updates slow to a crawl. In all fairness to Samsung, they've been pretty good with updates to the 10.1. I've seen an update to 3.1 and 3.2 since I bought mine on launch day, and they were fairly quick. Mind you, I'm taking into account the fact that Samsung had to put touchwiz on Honeycomb and fix some of the issues that were left behind when Honeycomb launched. We've also seen Samsung move rather quickly to resolve issues on the 7Plus, including an update that dropped last night that is supposed to fix the SOD issue. All in all, Samsung has been good about updating its wifi-only devices, so while I'm confident that the phones will miss that Q1 deadline, I have high hopes for the tablets.
I hear you but talk to original galaxy tab wifi owners who are still rocking GB.
Hmmm, there was an ota last night?
On topic, I would cm9 on this device. Fingers crossed.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
The reason I asked this is not so much that I can't wait for ICS. It is more derived from wanting an ASOP-ish experience. I am also thinking about the future. OEMs are usually good for the first year of supporting the devices they make. Then they start to fail claiming that the device is not "compatable" with the latest version. I have an old HTC hero that my son uses as an MP3 player. It is running CM7 and the OEM claimed that it would not support gingerbread, heck they even have an ICS port for it.
CM seems to have a good record of keeping supported devices working. I am sure that once ICS is released for the 7 plus there will be custom builds available.

I am an original galaxy tab owner still rocking GB. (I've flashed ICS, but I decided to rollback until the camera issues have been solved and more of my Gameloft purchases are updated for ICS compatibility,) I'm not overly upset that Samsung didn't update it to ICS, but that may just be a personal thing.
Samsung started rolling out an OTA last night that will be pushed to all devices over the next two weeks.

They are not only slow but also the updates themselves are notoriously bad and it usually takes a long time for bug fixes. Samsung's software development side is really not that great.
You are right though, as of right now all of the manufacturers suck pretty hardcore. It's pretty ridiculous really, hopefully they get better with releasing fewer devices.

Yes, it is key to not forget the carrier influences and also bear in mind that carrier-specific variants of, e.g., the Galaxy S2 were not within the scope of Samsung's ICS in Q1 announcement.
My previous phone was the Epic 4G. It was the first US carrier variant to receive official Froyo and Gingerbread updates but it received them well after the "stock" Galaxy S model (GT-I9000, I believe) received them.
So in other words, when looking at Samsung's update record, remember to compare apples to apples. Nexus One got its official Froyo upgrade in May of 2010, I think. The GT-I9000 got its official Froyo upgrade in August. Gingerbread was released in December of 2010 on the Nexus S. I believe the Nexus One got its upgrade in January of 2011 and the GT-I9000 got its GB upgrade in March of 2011.
All in all, not too shabby for Samsung. It's only when you factor in variants (which have all been customized to various degrees which require OS customization) and carrier agendas (I believe AT&T let its phones languish on 2.1 for a good while to not have them be competitive with the iPhone, which was AT&T exclusive at the time) that Samsung's rep starts to take a turn.
The I9000 vs Captivate is probably the clearest example of the negative effect a carrier can have on update releases.
The I9000 and Captivate were close enough that it took developers here very little time (days maybe? weeks at most...) to begin running I9000 releases on the Captivate. However, it took on the order of nine months from the I9000's GB release before the Captivate officially received Gingerbread.
Similarly, Samsung has only been slightly behind other tablet vendors in Honeycomb updates for the Tab 10.1, mainly due to being the first vendor to include a custom skin - but "behind" has usually been at worst 1-2 months of delay.
Similarly, the I9100 is scheduled to receive ICS in March and Sammy seems on track with that. However, the I777 (AT&T variant) probably won't see official ICS until 2013...
For the 7.0 Plus - for the developers the Tab does have, I think polishing the current HC releases is the top priority. Honestly, ICS offers far less compared to HC than it does compared to GB, and right now, there's some major work to be done on the 7.0 Plus thanks to Samsung being asshats with regards to AR6000 driver source code.
