[MOD] [Update:5/5/2011] BootMenu - Recovery, 2nd Init , v0.5.1 - Defy Android Development

NOTICE: Sorry Guys, As i lost my defy, i will not be able to work for defy anymore So i will not be able to maintain this thread as well. Racca is maintaining another thread with updates for this bootmenu here which can now be called the official thread.
Hello XDA,
[Notice: You might have checked my signature and already figured out that i lost my Motorola Defy So i will be no longer able to develop anything for defy. I will not be able to edit the boot menu and optimize it, but i will still post all the updates i get from Korean Developers. I am sorry to say that i will not be able to work on porting MiUi to Defy anymore. I hope some other developer will handle the work and port MiUi to Defy. Just reply to this thread if you have anything. Thank You]
This is a pre-boot menu that loads just before the android system starts, which allows you to enter recovery, start adb daemon, run 2nd init script, run 2nd boot and few more. I recently changed the format of this post so that i can easily add updates, and i hope you guys don't mind it, and if you want to check the old post, here is the link. I have also added an unofficial changelog. This MOD was developed by Korean Developers at http://cafe.naver.com/androiders, so big thanks goes to them.
Status: Beta
Latest Version: v0.5.1
Last Update: 4/16/2011
Usage:
Load second init.rc file which enables you to do a lot of things that were not possible before.
Load custom recovery before booting os, which makes it possible to restore your nandroid backup or flash a new rom even if your system is not booting.
Run ADB Daemon to debug system boot using logcat or similar tools, very useful for developers.
Change the default boot to 2nd init, so you can load the 2nd init on default boot.
And much more....

P.S. I do not take any responsibilities for the damages caused by this tool. If you brick your device, the most i can do is *help* you recover your system. So use it on your own. Works on my phone.

This will be impressive when 2nd-init works.
Thanks for everyone working in things like that!!
P.S. It's working here!

does this mean custom kernels? once it gets figured out?

Well, not right now, but once the korean developers figure out a way to bypass the recovery signature verification, which is of course, not easy, we will be able to do that too. And according to what i kknow, the korean devs are working really hard on that. But this definitely means that we are one step closer.

So for now this makes flashing Roms easier? safer? sorry if i seem confused i'm not getting my Defy till Monday just want to clarify if i should flash Roms this way or follow directions dor each rom, all this sbf files and being able to downgrade is kinda confusing I never had a android phone with a locked bootloader so all this is new to me.
hope that makes sense.

Well, this doesnt really make flashing roms easier (its same recovery), but it definitely makes it safer as you can always restore your nandroid or flash another rom even if your phone stops booting. And i can totally understand you, the way motorola works is a bit different than HTC and other phones, sbfs and stuff like that, but dont worry, if you read the guides here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=919334 , you will understand everything. Enjoy

That are very great news!!
Does I have to install this after every new firmware-flash or only after a bootloader up/downgrade?

wow... great news..
now we don't have to boot up the phone, and install custom recovery.
saving time

Can't wait to see custom kernels

"intohim" what a great nick... hahahahahaha!
sorry, great news & big props to the korean devs!

That sounds pretty awesome, will try later. I would have saved a lot of hours with that... anyway, I'll save them by now

Oh, now disabling USB debugging is not required! Bravo!

I have not disabled USB debugging and I have M boot loop. Now reflashing to try again.
For everyone - do not forget to turn off usb debugging. Now it´s working and I am going to try it some more.
Edit: Finally the true, fully working recovery. With Tenfar´s recovery, this is the best developed thing for Defy, since Defy´s release
and it´s worth the donation. About only 5 minutes to recover bricked system.
I only hope some day adb will be working too, but this is great enough for now.

How can I get root-access after starting adb via the bootmenu?
Currently, it's not working for me:
$ su

not possible unless someone can crack/get the lock
it's a great improvement but no where near custom kernels
afaik, this is another "bootstrap" executed on boot except it resumes normal boot after 2 seconds or so.
if we can get 2nd-init to work with it, we might finally be close to getting what milestone already have.

Curious, just in case anyone has already tried and can give an answer: when installed, is outer persistent after you flash a sbf? Or is it overwritten by the sbf? Does anyone know? (i mean, afaik /pds isn't restored with sbf, mess with it and you get a brick! )

Sorry to say, but nope, this is not hardcoded in to rom or is not replaced in place of original recovery as the bootloader is still locked. And installing a sbf update is like replacing everything on the phone with the contents from sbf. So it wont work if you reflash the sbf, unless it is included in the mod or rom you installed. Some developers have just contacted me and said that they are going to include this on their rom. So future defy roms are going to be more safe

[ROM] Hellstra Skitzandroid Telstra-Cyanogen Mod

All,
This rom is a rebuilt version of the latest Telstra AU ROM with GPS fix ( RUU_Bravo_Telstra_WWE_1.16.841.1_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11_release_126124_signed ).
I have removed all of the Telstra crap and added some useful apps. I have deployed it to my unbranded phone and it is working fine.
Changes from the standard ROM include:
- Removed all of the Telstra apps (except whereis... maybe next version )
- Added root access, of course
- Apps2SD included but not functional (you can get it to work by issuing adb commands)
- WiFi Tethering included. Will probably remove from the next version as it's a bit flaky.
- Changed the boot animation to the Nexus One anim
- Some additional apps such as:
3D Gallery
Car Home
Navigator
Voice Dialer
Others I inevitably forgot
To do:
- Figure out how to add APNs to the ROM
- Fix A2SD
Download link is in the next post.

Enjoy!
IMPORTANT: READ FIRST
Flashing ROMs in general is a risky business. If you've never flashed a non-standard ROM before, I suggest you read about and understand the method before you even consider downloading this. I take no responsibility for any issues that may be caused by this ROM. Use it at your own risk.
I also suggest you read here and note any known issues and changes for new versions.
You must have a rooted handset to be able to flash this ROM. Head over to MoDaCo, or search XDA for guides on how to root your phone.
To flash this ROM to a rooted handset, follow these instructions:
BEFORE YOU START
Copy the zip file to the root of your SD card.
Method A:
1a) Power on your phone, holding the VOLUME-DOWN button until you see the HBOOT menu
2a) Use the VOLUME buttons to navigate to the "Recovery" option and select it using the POWER button
....continue from step 3 below.
Method B (quicker but requires SDK)
1b) Boot up your phone and connect it to your PC via Micro-USB cable
2b) Execute 'adb reboot recovery' form the tools directory of the Android SDK
....continue from step 3 below.
3) Once you see the red triangle (of death ) connect your phone to your PC using the micro-USB cable
4) Go to the 'pushfiles' folder that came with the root-kit from MoDaCo.
5) Execute ./recovery-linux.sh (Linux), ./recovery-mac.sh (OSX) or recovery-windows.bat (Windows) and wait for the recovery menu to load.
6) Use the TRACKBALL to navigate to the Wipe option. Select Wipe by clicking the optical trackball. Do a System wipe, followed by a cache wilpe and finally a dalvik-cache wipe (each of the first three options). Once complete, press the VOL-DOWN button to return to the main menu.
7) From the main menu select FLASH ZIP FROM SDCARD, select the ROM zip file, confirm flash.
8) Once flashing is complete, select REBOOT from the menu.
9) Enjoy your uncluttered handset

Changelog
=======================
Issues:
=======================
- Titanium Backup not working. Its not included in the ROM but just thought I'd mention it It complains about not being able to get root access whereas every other app that requires root access works fine so far. Downloading busybox through TB causes a FC.
- Some people are getting the A2SD infinite boot loop issue (next version will definitely not include A2SD as you can add it yourself if you want it).
You can get out of the loop by doing:
Code:
adb reboot recovery
from the SDK tools folder on your PC to get back to the recovery menu.
You can also do 'adb shell' and then issue the command 'a2sd' from the shell but I wouldn't advise it. It will boot up 'normally' but it's not a permanent fix.

I'm yet to root my phone and WILL get to it in good time.
When I do, I'll give this one a flash.
Thanks for your work.
Death to all the Hellstra visual bloatware scum that crapped up the original ROM (stupid splash screen Tel$tra ding noise especially)

Hey guys,
Correct me if I'm wrong but for anyone with a Telstra set the problem is 2 fold?
1) we need to be able to Root the phone, Paul's latest 0800 root method will hopefully fix this
2) we need a ROM that incorporates the Telstra GPS fix whilst debloating the phone.
Does that mean that if we want to use GPS we are restricted to ROMs cooked with the GPS fix? or will any generic ROM do the trick (i.e. those from MoDOCO?
I am experiencing the pink AMOLED problem at low brightness and may have to replace the phone with another one. If I root the phone and flash this ROM, can I flash back the original ROM that I downloaded recently from HTC to restore it to the state it was when I bought it?

I dont think so. You could flash the original Telstra one back again but the recovery partition is wiped/messed around with as part of the rooting process. Have a look around Modaco and you'll find your answer - you're definitely not the first to ask.

The GPS issue was a software related bug from the shipped ROM, I read somewhere on here someone mentioning that they flashed the generic ROM and had GPS working before HTC/Telstra released the update

yeah the new Telstra ROM had the exact same GPS config as my unbranded one so the prolem was caused by Telstra meddling with things.... surprise surprise!

Cheers bcmobile. So in your opinion am I correct in saying that it's better I wait until the screen problem is worked out (to return under warranty to Telstra from whom I bought it outright) before I go rooting the device?
well tried yrs BC
and now it boots to the htc logo ..and stays there
i've tried twice now.
i can get to recovery mode tho, something wrong with yr image maybe?
note in recovery mode ..down the bottom, it says " Build: not set"
note that i tried yrs after succesffulyy rooting via the latest method from paul, and, applying the radio update. neither got my gps working so i've tried yrs ..

I've used three Desires and they all show the pink on low brightness so returning it under warranty won't help you.
ok, my phones working again, rerooted with pauls method.
but have no gps and i can't flash back to the telstra rom thanks to the radio updating my hboot to .80
same here guys. I rooted using Paul's latest method but gps stopped working. and when flashing this Rom it hangs at the white HTC screen. now back to Paul's rooted Rom. hope we fix the gps issue soon!

[ROM] CyanogenMod 6.0rc1-coburnrom - Milestone Port project

Project Description
This is a project to port the Droid version of CyanogenMod to the milestone. While the Droid and Milestone devices are twins, they are CDMA and GSM respectively. Hacks include not flashing the boot image provided by the CM Droid package and some GSM configurations.
Status
CyanogenMod 6 RC1 (with CoburnROM hacks) will flash successfully, however it will refuse to boot (possibly due to incompatible stock kernel or that the milestone doesn't like unsigned ROMs). So far, flashing works from koush's ClockWorkMod Recovery and Open Recovery 1.14. When rebooted, the device hangs on the M Boot logo.
Downloads
PoC/RC #1: Download from my blog, Geek In The Family - 75MB.
What you can do
Pretty much this ROM is currently a playground, if you want to have a poke around, download a copy of the above versions of the ROM and extract it, and then poke around and see what makes it tick.
Other notes
Space saved for future use.
Cheers!

Good luck man, I really hope this happens
You should check with the guys on and-developers.com, and their IRC channel #milestone-modding on Freenode for any progress on the bootloader
Hacking the bootloader is impossibile on our Milestone, the TI OMAP chipset runs in High Security mode and for switching to General Purpose mode you have to desolder and resolder the OMAP chipset on your mainboard, soldering the right pins for enabling the GP mode.
Anyway, 2ndboot can make us able to boot a different kernel (for now GSM modem is unusable, so we can't use the phone with the new?y booted kernel) and this is the way that we'll take on the Milestone for using a custom kernel.
No custom ROMs. Or at least not this way.
We'll NEVER be able to boot this ROM.

My my, that's negative. I do know about the custom kernel via kexec/2ndboot trick.
Nothing is impossible to be hacked, it's a matter of time and blood, sweat and tears. As Paul from MoDaCo stated, nothing is impenetrable.
I'll get this ROM booting, even if I have to wait a year or two before the Boot loader is hacked or a proper method is working.
Good luck to you. I commend you for your efforts.
After 1 year waiting for the bootloader to be hacked...I am slightly skeptical. However, now that the Droid X has been released to the masses with the same locked bootloader, we might get some fresh eyes to look into this matter.
I would be happy enough with a custom kernel running on 2nd boot ;-)
SenseUI Mod
Hello, You might try using the mot_boot_mode file, which is also used with the SenseUI Port for the Milestone, I guess that would make this boot too? If I'm right, this is the boot sequence:
This is what I'm talking about:
"the ramdisk is located in /system/ramdisk.tar folder, it all starts here.
the ramdisk is opened by /system/bin/mot_boot_mode."
You should download the SenseUI Mod and analyse it's way of booting.
Good luck!

the problem is not about being negative but you are facing it the wrong way .
the problem here is to hack the thing not to port an already existing mod .
Once the bootloader is bypassed they ll be hundreds of real ROMS .
Anybody can pretend at porting there own roms it is completely IRRELEVANT since it wont be possible until its hacked.
you said it 'even if I have to wait ' well there you go do like thousands of others and just wait . BUt please dont pretend at anything else , thank you .
I am actually porting the ROM to the Milestone, in case if you're concerned that I'm lying. Check my twitter for progress reports.
@Mikevhl we may have a hope if we try that! Thanks for the recommendation!
Also, kexec is working. However, instead of rebooting Android with the Droid CM6 Kernel, it just reboots the phone instead. I'm working on a possible fix for that, thank Kiljacken for compiling the kexec module.
So you're not going with that 2ndboot method?
In any case, my eyes are glued to your twitter account

As I said, it IS possible to skip the BL checks, and it's fully hackable...but...I know.... you don't want to resolder your OMAP....
if this mod is "Droid" based, you need to make many modifications to the startup..
the Droid is in no way protected, where Milestone has GSM radio protected, and specific drivers required to open it, which for now only opens when using the original "init" process of a milestone.. the "init" from droid disables radio completely..
but take a look on how i got the senseui port running.. i got the froyo partly running the same way, so im sure my solution used in senseui mod will help you along to make it work...it just requires some debugging and "adb logcat" so you at least can see what happens at startup..
why not work together dexter? i think this may help out in particular cases

I never said you were lying all I said was dont pretend ' about rom ' when even a basic kernel wont run .
if you have a workin kexec would you mind sharing it ?
I'm very interested in your work since it seems that we will never see an official 2.2 from Motorola... I don't know if we are going to have the new update, here in France (2.1 update 2).
Well, I just have a question. On a french forum, someone posted a method to downgrade the ROM of the Milestone by implementing the right version of the bootloader in it, I don't know if I very clear. This member had some major problems with the 2.1 update so he decided to downgrade to 2.0.1. However he wasn't able to do it because his Milestone was using the 90.78 bootloader while the 2.0.1 rom was using the 90.73 bootloader. Eventulally, he managed to install the 2.0.1 rom on his Milestone by putting the 90.78 bootloader in the 2.0.1 rom.
So my question is : will it be possible put a bootloader in a custom rom in order to make it boot on the Milestone ?
(I would give you the link for the topic on the french forum once my account si verified)

Actually this is a wrong assumption. HS chip cannot be turned to a Generag purpose.
For those who are interested, here is kexec.
Devs should know the drill, insmod kexec.ko etc etc.
Originally made by Kiljacken (compilation, etc), shared by me.
As for the Android 2.0.1 on Boot Loader 97.73, he may have just made a custom update zip that nukes the system partition and installs 2.0.1 on the device.
Also, I updated my Boot Loader to 90.78ch, which is the XT702 Boot Loader - no bricks. Yet.

[DEV][Closed] Trying To Port MiUi ROM To Defy (Update - 4/13/2011)

Sorry i cant work on this anymore because i lost defy. Sorry guys
Hello guys,
first of all, i am no where near a developers level, but being somehow geeky at linux and android stuff, i am trying to port MiUi ROM for motorola milestone to motorola defy. I havent succeeded till now, but i will try my best to bring MiUi goodness to Defy phone users. I worked all night last night, trying to do different stuff every time hoping it works, but everytime i do anything, all i get is the big a$$ motorola logo. I need some developer's help on doing this.
The main problem has been motorola's locked bootloader, which does not let me flash updated zip files, unless i flash the original sbf, log into motoblur, root it, install recovery, boot into recovery and finally install. And trust me, i did all of that like 10-15 times last night. Even my phone must be pissed off at me right now cuz of that If there is an easier way, please, please please let me know.
I have tried everything from replacing apps, extracting boot.img, replacing framework files, installing directly, using kitchen for htc to automatically replace and almost eveything i could think of, and still no success. I really need help from someone who can debug kernels and sneak into bytecodes.
You are really welcome to help me if you think that you could help in any ways. Please shoot me an email at zed [at] wireshock.com (i will usually reply asap), or add me in gtalk admin [at] wireshock.com so that we can talk about it. Lets all hope that we can see miui in defy some day. Wish me luck
Edit: Here is the final thing i came up with, if anyone wants to examine, here is the link -> Click Here
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS WILL NOT WORK! IT WILL NOT BOOT! THIS IS FOR DEV'S ONLY!

Update (9:40 AM): Another night without success. I am trying my best to make it work. Few people have contacted me about this, and some have helped a lot. Thanks to them. I contacted eugene_373 about this, lets hope he replies fast.
Update (11:48 AM): @KSubediTweet My Defy no longer works... So, not much help I can give. <- Eugene's defy doesnt work, need some devs who work for defy.
Update (5:54 PM): Me and Landroid from xda worked for almost the whole day trying to make it work. No success till now, but i think we are closer than before. If anyone finds a way to run recovery without booting somehow, please let me know, that will help a lot. And be sure to say thanks to Landroid for helping me out a lot.

Thanks, ill try my best.
Eugene made some adaptations on system recovery to apply update.zip. I don't know exactly how that works but maybe help you.
link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995131
Thanks a lot for the link, if i can get the keyfile, i think i can make an update.zip for the recovery and can open clockworkmod from default recovery. Ill try it
Edit: or i can sign the zip file so that i can flash it from default recovery.
Dexter_nbl did the port of sense for us. In his rom he used a file on sdcard to boot on recovery. Like, if the file called recovery_mode exist on sdcard execute the script to boot up on recovery....this helped a lot!

That might have worked if the room booted at all, the problem here seems to be with some hardware driver that is preventing the phone from booting. Only if someone who knows what is preventing it from booting could help me out, i would work on fixing it somehow.
good to see a new project coming up.
got a bit quiet here in the past week, devs probably waiting for motos official froyo release.
anyways, kepp us updated on your progress and good luck!

That ideia is for you access your system recovery to restore your system without flash a sbf, get root, install system recovery (that take a long time). This way you can try more things. Dexter call the script to verify the file on sdcard in beginning of the process of boot, i dont know how but if you want see take a look the first version of his ROM.
i dont think you can sign the update packages. maybe you should try to ask eugene how this whole cookie cutter thing works

I have contacted miui developers to help me out. Waiting for reply now. Lets hope that we can bring miui to defy as soon as possible. Need help from some devs.
What do you mean go to recovery without booting? Without booting to Android you cannot use any other means to write to the Filesystem, so how would you do that? You can't replace the recovery that's installed with the phone, so I don't really see how that would be possible.
Recovery without booting is possible through charge-only-mode, but no one is capable to do it for Defy. And probably it is possible in Defy Sense ROM, if you read the thread. But I did not tried.
an option would be to look for an exploit in the recovery, that allows us to make something like open recovery on the milestone... i would ask the devs from openrecovery
There is the way using the second boot used on milestone (2nd-init) and the way used by Dexter in Sense ROM;
- included ClockWorkRecovery custom edition for this rom
• - Do NOT install the apk release, or it will ruin bootup of sense.
• - activate Recovery by putting an empty file in the root of your sdcard called "recovery_mode"
• content can be anything or empty, just make sure filename is correct.
• - reboot, and it will load into recovery.

[Q] I think I killed my Nexus S! Please help! (unlocking process/rooting stuff)

So, this is what has happened so far:
I googled for a small and easy to follow guide to unlock my phone so that I can later on install a custom rom. I followed the steps provided here:
http://nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-hacks/how-to-root-nexus-s/
What I didn't notice on the first place was the "UPDATE: DO NOT FOLLOW THIS GUIDE INSTEAD Please see new root method which works on all Nexus S and Nexus S 4G!" link. Don't ask why - really don't know.
The result was having my Nexus S stuck on a screen that shows Google logo on the middle and an unlocked padlock on the bottom.
It seemed, or to be exact, I figured out that, the problem was the .img file mentioned on some point in the middle of this.. tutorial.
So, I decided to follow the newer guide that can be found here:
http://nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-hacks/how-to-root-nexus-s-or-nexus-s-4g-new/
Although all went well (didn't have to go all over the same processes up to the .img installatin point), I ended up with the same screen that shows Google logo on the middle and an unlocked padlock on the bottom.
I figured out that I could just install a rom at this point, and decided that I should go back to stock. So, I followed this guide here:
http://nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-hacks/how-to-unroot-nexus-s-i9020ti9020ai9023/
But, when I choose to install the .zip file, I get this error:
assert failed: "getprop ("ro.product.device") == "crespo" || "getprop ("ro.product.device") == "crespo"
E: Error in /sdcard/i9020t_i9023.zip
(status 7)
Installation aborded
..let me add to this point that I have bought my Nexus S from EU, it is an i9023. Let me also add that all I wanted is to flash an ICS rom and I think I have ended with a f****d device I don't know what to do with!
Any help, really, would be so much appreciated since I need to use this phone. I have a backup for calls etc but I need some smartphone features!
I seriously doubt you killed your Nexus S. Temporarily disabled is more like it.
From off position, hold down Power + VOL-UP. You should be greeted with a screen with a green android and 4 options. If you can get there, that's the bootloader, and unless you manage to kill it (which is VERY hard to do), you can reflash everything from there via usb and adb.
What model Nexus S do you have? That's important for helping you to flash it.

Yes, I can enter this menu - there already. My model is an i9023GSM.
OK, then you DONT have a dead phone. You just need to reflash it correctly.
I'm sorry I can't be helpful for longer, because I am at work, but follow this guide and make sure you follow every detail (take note of step 6 in particular).
I know it's a long guide, but it's VERY detailed, and should get you up and running.
On a side note, for ROM selection, are you looking for an Ice Cream Sandwich alpha ROM (android 4.0) (less stable) or the older Gingerbread ROMs (2.3.7)?

You gave me the good news so, thank you for that. Now, I should follow this guide and come back in case I have a problem.
As far as the rom, I wanted to flash an ICS since I cannot wait any longer for Google to release the official update. But right now, anything that can get my device up and running would be really good!
Edit: nvm. >_<

OK, stuck already. On Part 2 what I understand is that I have to open the CMD and copy-paste the path to the "tools" folder? Because this is what I do, and after - since this is what I have understand - I type "fastboot oem unlock" and I get "'fastboot' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file."
What do I do wrong?
EDIT:
Tottaly stuck on Part 2. It seems that there is no fastboot.exe file inside "tools" folder. I don't think the problem is something else - I'm sure I give the right commands since I tryied for fun another folder I have with fastboot.exe inside and it worked - to be exact it just gave me a FAILED messsage since device is already unlocked. Plus, regarding Part 3, Step 1, the first file for download is missing so I used the second link and downloaded 5023-cyan file. Hope this was a right move to do.
EDIT 2:
Ok, here is the story so far: I followed the guide given step by step. The USB drivers has been installed correctly so the device can be connected to the PC.
In the "tools" folder there was no such fastboot.exe file so I manually added one that I've found on the newer guide given on the 1st post. The unlocking process is failing because the device is already unlocked.
I did manage to install after this, the 5023-cyan.img file since this is the only link working from Part 3, Step 1. This gone well too!
Now, I couldn't go on with Part 4, I mean, I could not install the .zip file as it describes so through recovery mode I installed the .zip file succesfully (confirmation message to Nexus S screen).
I reboot and still get the same Google logo on the middle and an unlocked padlock on the bottom.
I cannot understand what I do so wrong? Oh, I'm so disappointed..
OK, people, head's up! I did manage to install the latest stable rom of cyanogenmod and the phone is up and running! It means that somehow everything went well! Now, how do I return back to OEM? Because I just need to make things as they where before..
..or should I give cyanogenmod a chance?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664 or use ROM manager and select Stock ROM (you should then receive OTA upgrades to 2.3.6).
On the latter: You colud just back up different ROMs and switch between them using CW.

If you are still facing problems. Try locking your bootloader again with this method. Then it will let you go back on stock. Use v3 it is stable solid and easy to use.

Can you give me a CM9 kangs link since as new here, I'm kinda lost?
Ok new problem this time! After I installed my 3rd rom (probably, a totall noob thing to do) which was the OEM one, I tryied to re-enter recovery mode to wipe all data and re-install the rom I want. But now I get this mark of the small green android with a big exclamation mark on top of his head. What is this new hell that found me?

Nice, glad to see you managed to get it working. Honestly, the hassle is kind of worth it, because you learn more about the process anyways.
That being said, give CyanogenMod a chance. There's also several other ROMs. Unless you need stock OS for warranty service, I'd recommend going with one of the many custom ROMs we have here.
There are several minimalistic AOSP-built ROMs that mimic the feel of the stock OS, but are optimized for speed, and still have some very nice tweaks that you may enjoy. Just take a look through the dev section, and you'll see we have tons of options.

It did worth the hassle, that's for sure. Now I think it's so easy to unlock a Nexus plus I now have a little more knowledge regarding Android .
I will stick with CM 2.3.7 as it looks just fine. I don't care about warranty, I don't think I will ever need the official service for a software issue. Now I have to re-install my apps, re-sync my accounts and setup the phone the way I want it. It will take a little more time.
But I'm glad that I pulled this through - with your help of course! Guys, you rock!
I wish that I'll be as helpful as you at the near future.
Today's latest CM9/ICS kang is here
I'd also recommend getting a custom kernel.
For batt life, morfic's SEUV kernel.
For reg performance, perhaps Matrix's kernel
MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE CLOCKWORKMOD PERMANENTLY INSTALLED BEFORE DOING THIS. It saves time if you mess up. Also, make sure you get the latest gapps HERE
Instructions:
1. Go to clockwork recovery
2. Select data/factory reset/wipe
3. Select clear cache as well
4. Adv Mounts and Storage > wipe /system (note, this wipes android off the phone. It's a good idea since youre going from ver 2.x to 4.x)
5. Choose "flash from zip" (or whatever it's called.....NOT flash from update.zip)
6. Flash the cm9 update file first, then flash the kernel of your choice, then flash the gapps file.
7. Back out of the menu and select reboot.
Take note though, that the new ICS OS has incompatibilities with certain apps while GPU rendering is turned on, etc. It'll prob reboot on you sometimes, etc. For the most part it's stable, but that's completely subjective.
If you do run ICS, make sure you turn on GPU rendering in Dev Options. It takes full advantage of the GPU for UI animations, etc. Sometimes there's a stray app here and there that doesnt play nice, and you'll notice if the window looks really tiny or funny. Turning it off will fix the problem.

Two questions:
The link you give me to download the ICS rom keeps loading for ever. So, I choosed this one instead:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1356228
Right or wrong thing to do?
It it essential to install a custom kernel? I ask because I forgot to copy/paste the .zip file and due to lack of time, I procceded without it, installing the ROM and G-APPS.

I have procured a new Nexus Q. Work has resumed on Android 7.0, from a hardware and specs standpoint, there is no reason to think that this device is not capable of running Nougat if the Galaxy Nexus can. Nice! Thanks very much for this! I'll try it when I'm back home in a few days. I was planning to try and work on this myself but perhaps I can transfer some efforts over to Android TV. Do you have the source for this on GitHub as that could also be really helpful - that way a few of us can contribute to help fix things etc.
New build coming soon with proper sources and fixes posted to GitHub. Also, if anyone would be interested, I believe that it may be possible to use an OTG webcam for Skype/etc.
Great stuff, thanks for doing this. Should be able to get android TV then since it's just a separate launcher.
Hmm, not having any luck flashing this. I get an "Installation aborted" error. What recovery are you using?

This one seems to flash now (although it completes suspiciously quickly) but attempting to boot results in just a black screen over HDMI. I can't take a logcat because of the device permissions but is does show up with ADB so it presumably it is at least booting the kernel and a some core system but seemingly nothing past that - not even a boot animation.

I just tried flashing over Cm11 and nothing so far. Seems also to not boot. The speed at which it flashes in recovery says to me something isn't right with the updater script. There is no way it is copying the 255MB contents onto the Nexus Q in that time. Cm11 (which is smaller) takes far longer.
I tried to get a logcat but as before I am not able to get one of the boot attempt as the device appears as offline (because I can't authorise the PC RSA keys with adb as that would need Android to finish booting at least once). I can get you a recovery log or a logcat while flashing the Zip from recovery if you like but that's about it.
Have you actually had this booting on a Nexus Q then at all yet? And if so, how exactly did you install it, with which recovery and if over another ROM which one was it?
Possibly stupid question...
I'm new to this forum, at least posting here. So, since the Nexus Q app is no longer supported, how does one enable USB debugging on the Q? Any redirects and help would be greatly appreciated! I just got a brand new Q today for $10 at a local Goodwill (accompanied by fellow Q's). I was very sad to see these are no longer factory-functional.
If this is the wrong place to post, I apologize in advance, and would gladly accept on where-to-post details.
Thanks!

You've replied to a post about a specific custom ROM in the development section (which is completely the wrong place) and failed follow the XDA rule of searching before asking a question, because if you had you'd find the answer has already posted multiple times. Not trying to be harsh or rude - just letting you know!
If you have general questions or need help you should really go to the the "Nexus Q Help, Q&A and troubleshooting" section.
However, the situation is that you can't enable debugging on the stock ROM, but you can boot the Nexus Q into fastboot mode by holding your hand over the Q while you turn it on - this will make the led turn and stay red if successful (nothing will be shown onscreen). From there you can unlock your Q and boot a custom recovery image by issuing the correct fastboot commands from your PC. The custom recovery allows you to flash a custom ROM. The stock ROM is no use without the app which cannot be registered anymore since the servers are down.

Tried to flash this latest version but it seems that there is an error in the updater-script. I get a status 6 error in recovery: "Installation Aborted".
Edit: So I edited the updater-script to remedy the status 6 error and then it progressed through most of the way before giving a status 7. I managed to fix the status 7 with a further edit to the updater-script but it still won't boot anything at all. I cannot take a logcat because it isn't booting anything at all and so there is no adb server.
I presume that you have this running on your Q but if you do then you clearly did not use the ZIP that was provided as that doesn't work. Do you have the system images which you just flashed from the bootloader with fastboot? If so perhaps you could share those so I could have a go flashing those instead and see if it will boot then.
wollac, you are correct in stating that I posted the wrong build (uploaded the wrong zip from my dev folder. However, the build I MEANT to post is booting on my Q, though BT and the Amp are not working yet. I'm a tad scatterbrained with finals, but I am compiling a new build that should hopefully resolve the bluetooth issues at least, and I will upload as soon as it's done.
