[Q] Android on E-Ink display devices? - General Topics

I'm going on a trip and wanted to bring an E-Reader with me. I would prefer something with an E-Ink display (battery, eye stain) but I also would the freedom to open books for Kindle and Epub format.
I was looking to see if any Nook (non color) ROMs existed but couldn't find anything, or it was drowned out by the Nook Color posts/articles. Any device would do, but as the Nook is already running a modified Android I thought that would be the ideal place to start looking.

Actually I just found stuff on rooting the Nook.

Is there any recommendations on another device I should look at?

android isn't for ereader displays. then, there's the speed issue. or rather, lack of it. why on earth would anybody want to put android on an ereader? Isn't that just fanboi'ism a little too far?

I was hoping for Android on an E-Reader so I can have access to Kindle App and Epub books (like from B&N, Borders, etc)
If there's another way to do this please let me know. This has nothing to do with fanboi'ism. I was just thinking if I could root the Nook and load the Kindle app that would get me where I wanted.

calibre if using linux will convert formats from one book to another, then your converting problems are solved! if you want to access the kindle app, buy a kindle! or download on a pc, convert, and copy over.

Calibre will NOT convert DRM'd E-books. If the books I wanted to buy were DRM free then this would not be an issue. Stripping the DRM is an option I am aware of, but over time will turn into a cat and mouse game.
If I had to bite the bullet and pick a platform I'd probably buy a Kindle and just not have access to epub books. I just thought if rooting a Nook was easy, I could have the best of both worlds.

sheesh... not much love around here...
i'd recommend simply getting a kindle. imo completely worth it.
otherwise does the nook have a web browser you could use to access your kindle library online?
I can't fathom trying to navigate android on an e-ink system

and here's a potential workaround for reading epub books on your kindle

is there a book reader app?

Is there an app thats works and is full screen for reading books on Vs g tab? I tried a few on market but couldnt get them to install.
I was able to get the Kindle App installed (stock tNt) and the Aldiko app installed as well. Work fine. I downloaded the apk onto my SD Card as I am currently network challenged. Next up B&N Nook app. I also added the SlideMe dot org app market so try there if the Handandgo App market isn't doing it for you.

I've successfully installed and used, Kindle, Noon, and Acrobat PDF readers on mine.
Aldiko for all your non-DRM ebook needs. Still the best, imo.
txtr also works for me (better than the default Adobe reader imo).

I agree Completely
I don't have a tablet, but I imagine that FBReader would work fine on one, and it's my favorite reader. It's light and without a lot of nonsense most of the others have.
Kindle and aldiko arent dowloading successfully for me so ima try and fine an apk for them online. Hope that works. Btw im using cyanogen beta 3. Wonder if that has anything to do with it.

K well i got kindle, nook, and kobo working but when i try to make an account it tells me i have no connection when i do....weird...
I sideloaded FBReaderJ which works fine, and yes I missed an ebook reader as well even after the update and even though the box mentions ebook reader.
OTOH I found the 10" form factor to be LOUSY for reading primarily fiction books, while 7" was a perfect form factor for me. 10" is just too large and unwieldly, great for web and maybe other applications, but if I end up keeping mine I know that I'm going to want a complementary 7" device... just wish that there was a Tegra based 7" tablet then I'd be a happy camper.

You make a fair point, re: form factor for reading fiction, however, for reading papers, articles, textbooks and other page-sized formatted text, a 10" screen is far superior to a 7" screen, which is just too small.

Book readers

one that comes with it is very basic are there better ones people are using, also i tried and epub book on there and i to put it in the root of the storage for it to be seen, is there not a way to put all the books in 1 folder and them be seen by the book readers
thanks for any help
Hi,
Have a look at this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045190
Someone suggested that a corrupt epub file might be causing the trouble with My library. Me personally, never had a problem with it and I use it a lot.
As I mentioned in that thread, the best epub reader was considered Aldiko, available from the market.
Hope this helps,
rio
Personally I like the nook app the best. It smooth and has nice page turn animations.

It's in the Android Market.

Overdrive Media Console
I don't know if it is compatible with Honeycomb, but Overdrive Media Console is an excellent book reader. You can use it to check ebooks and audiobooks out of your local library for free. All that I have used through Overdrive gave me 21 days before the books expire.
I haven't received my Transformer yet but have been itching to give this app a shot on it. If anyone gives it a go, please report back with the results as to whether or not it works on the Transformer with Honeycomb.
Overdrive can be obtained for free on the Android Market.

I can't see the nook app on my transformer!! is there an apk file instead?
Don't have my TF yet, but I have a Nook Color. I like Aldiko better than the Nook's ebook app. Specifically I love the night mode (reverses colors) and the slide to adjust brightness on the fly.

I have aldiko, ezpdf, google books, and amazon kindle, but I actually like MyLibrary the best. IMO MyLibrary is not basic at all. I'm not sure how to solve the file location problem, but I think MyLibrary has the best features. You can highlight, annotate, search, organize bookshelves and do text to speech. The pdf viewer is pretty nice as well - it puts a preview blurry page before it loads, unlike ezpdf, and that lets you decide whether you want to skip the page or not (useful in magazines with ads).
I haven't encountered many bugs (just the rare force close), and I haven't tried the nook app yet though. I'll try it out later and maybe give my impressions.
Here's the various apps I'm currently using:
Amazon's Kindle - for *.mobi (Amazon E-book format)
ezPDF Reader - for *.pdf (Acrobat)
Perfect Viewer - for *.cbr (Comic Book RAR Archive)
So far I've had good experiences with the above 3.

+1. Also has a night mode and looks good in landscape. If the Asus app had a night mode, I'd just use it though. I wish the Nook app had the search features of the Asus app, but then again, I can't remember the last time I searched a book I was reading.

Book Reader

Hi there
I'm buying an Android tablet soon and I will be using it mainly for book reading.
I have a couple of questions about it for anyone that uses their tablet for it.
Is there ANY way to import your own eBook files into Google's new honeycomb book reading application? I'm not talking about uploading them to Google's servers, just dragging a book to a location on the tablet or something so that the application picks it up?
Are there any other good eBook readers that include a smooth animated page turn (like iPad eBook apps) and displays 2 pages rather than a single page paragraph? Optimized for tablets...
Nook has the two page view, BETTER page turn animations than the google app (and anything ive seen on ipad), and allows sideloading of epub files locally.

+1 for nook app. It looks good, it's super stable, and it sideloads easily.
I agree. The nook app is wonderful. 2 page looks fine if that's your thing, and the page turns look great. Also the best part in my mind is the ability to read books you purchased in original font. Though, since sideloading is your thing...you still get the best viewing features in Nook.

[Q] Anybody replace their desk/laptop with a Xoom?

Hey all,
I'm looking into the possibility of using my Xoom as my daily computer and making a current PC more of a home theater setup in the living room. I don't do anything heavy on the computer (besides occasionally gaming but no big deal) it's all mostly web browsing, IMing, Facebook, etc, so I don't see too much of a reason why I couldn't do this.
My question is this: Have any of you done it? Made the switch from the PC (or mac) being your primary computer to the Xoom? If so, thoughts? Anything to pay attention to? If I do go through with this, I will end up getting a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, I'm sure... but I'd rather not waste 100 bucks on something I end up not using often.
i use my laptop just to root my xoom =)
Anything I should pay attention to, or an accessory that will make a huge difference or anything? Besides the bluetooth keyboard/mouse, obviously.
thank you for the reply, but I already have a xoom... just trying to decide if it is feasible to use as an everyday computer.
Advise Only
This thread and the linked thread reminds me of the discussions an older man like myself would have with so called computer sales persons. If I'd listened to all their talk about specs and hardware I'd owned a missile launcher capable of high end mathematical computations !
What I'm saying is my advise is to list your requirements and expectations first. Look at the specs and hardware and decide what you'll need.
I am a retired engineer and I spend most of my time on my Xoom. A properly installed version of ICS, personally like EOS, I have NO problems surfing, emailing, playing some games and yes I even break out a spreadsheet once in a while.
Yes there are netbooks and laptops that can offer more...just be sure to aim those missiles correctly!!

Wow, there was no need for AngryBulleteyeTruth to be so negative. I makes me wonder why he is even lurking the xoom forum if it is no use to him. Anyway.
I use my xoom more than I use my laptop and desktop. It Is wonderful for Im/text, typing documents to later be altered on a laptop/desktop, some games and media. I use my xoom everyday. The battery life is also great. Yes the document editing isn't on par with desktop suites but is an android tablet, not a laptop. The simplicity comes with its drawbacks but the portability, battery and ease of use is unmatched.
Also if you really need to run desktop quality apps you can just use an app like pocketcloud or splashtop hd to vnc into your laptop/desktop and do what you must. The internal 32gb + a 16gb micro sD card is more than enough room for me. You also have cloud storage available. There is even a app called pocketcloud explorer that will allow you to download and upload files remotely from your machines, with the addition of their companion software. AngryBulleteyeTruth just lacks creativity and the will to find a solution. Don't let his negativity drag you down. Also take a look at when he joined. Feb 2012 means he is fairly new to the community and possibly butt hurt by his unrealistic dream of his xoom transforming into a tiny robot and being his sidekick didn't work out as planned.
I love my xoom! With Team EOS nightlys + undervolting + some simple but useful apps to automate certain task at certain locations = WIN for me. I have a 4g xoom so I can pop my sim card from my HTC thunderbolt in there and use all of that unlimited data. Or tether via Bluetooth if I am on the go.
My uses also include: gps, scanning/PDFing documents on the fly, video chat, voip, portable netflix/media play w/ my micro hdmi cable, getting my fix on reddit, sexytime material and more. People are working hard and doing great things with this device. There will also be more to come. The device is an awesome tool but but you can't expect Apple like commercials that spoon feed what you can use it for.
Tips: checkout androidpolice.com and droid-life.com for explanations, news, reviews, tips and tweaks. Lifehacker also has some good android stuff from time to time. I use justreader to subscribe to the rss feeds.
Search YouTube for useful tablet apps.
Check out the Themes and Apps forum sections for other popular android tablets on XDA. I use tapatalk to subscribe to the Samsung galaxy tab 10.1, Asus prime, Asus transformer and nook color Themes and Apps sections.
Finally share your discoveries and leave constructive comments on XDA. This keeps the community going, makes you feel involved and spread the knowledge to others in your situation.
May you and your xoom find happiness.

I wrote on a xoom with swiftkeys while eating some carrot cake if you must know. I currently have 23 tabs open in opera from looking at reddit links that I would get back to later. And a couple more in chrome because I am downloading some music from beemp3 and prefer that the native download manager handles it. Yes I have typed 5+ pages with and without a Bluetooth keyboard on Docs to Go. My grammar isn't that shyty that I would require a stronger office suite to highlight the crap out of my paragraphs. You can always embed media at a later point or vnc into a desktop to complete the task as desired.
I hated netbooks. But that is not the point. The OP asked if it was viable to use the Xoom as his main device, not his only device. Yet you saw it fit to run your mouth, blabbering about your opinion, disappointment and flawed understanding of what the device is meant to achieve. I hope this exchange between us will be our last because I am not hear to convince you. You have made it clear that you aren't ashamed by your crys for attention using BOLD red font, linking to your own poorly placed Microsoft Dic-Riding thoughts on another thread and your clear inability to find a solution.
On Ice Cream Sandwich, this machine is a powerhouse. If you can't hang, Get Out. Good day sir/madam.
I feel dirty... like I am standing in the middle of a p***in match.
For what it is worth, I ordered a keyboard today and turned off my monitor to my computer to test this. I installed an rdc app on the xoom, and have done everything on it since I got home. So far, so good. I have a desktop at work I can work with if needed, however, I really do only use my computer for email, web browsing chatting, Facebook and other similar very light duty things. I honestly don't care if i can keep 30 tabs open...because I dont do it anyways. Same for documents. With a keyboard, it should be pretty easy, but I am not in school and do not type long essays, so it doesn't matter. If I have something super long to post, I have other options.
And yes... I typed this post on the xoom. It is on its dock in front of me, and I am using the hunt and peck method of typing on the on screen keyboard.

Avert your eyes my child from the darkness and bickering that may arise on these public forums. Lol.
May I suggest that you invest some coin in Swiftkeys Tablet X, Thumb Keyboard and Swype to have a more pleasant on screen experience. You won't regret it.
Also I use Keyboard Manager (only like $1) to automatically change keyboard when you switch from landscape to portrait and back. Swiftkeys Tablet X has a pretty good prediction/auto-correct function but I don't like the way it is displayed in portrait mode. Thumb Keyboard has a better layout (i use it in portrait mode) but the prediction/auto-correct isn't even close to Swiftkeys Tablet X. And Swype is free so why not try it. My experience with the stock keyboard is a dreadful one. All three are worth getting and are a wonderful investment.
Cheers.
I use my Xoom probably 90% of the time when I'm at home. Occasionally I will sit down and use my desktop for other stuff - BUT I already had a desktop at the time I bought my Xoom. If something must to happen to my desktop, I seriously doubt I would replace it. There is an app out there for practically everything now with a little time spent setting the Xoom up like I wanted it, it has almost replaced my desktop (and at some point it will probably replace it). I work in IT on a daily basis and I'm a power user and I'm very impressed with Android and what it can do.
OK then... time to ignore the obvious troll.
Anybody else have an opinion on this?
What Troll?
Looks like I owe you some thanks Andy!

What ROM are you running? I had this issue in the stock honeycomb ROM with an apple keyboard. I no longer have such issues on team EOS ICS nightlys.
Tip: swiftkeys Tablet X work great with an external keyboard. I say this because when an external keyboard is present, swiftkeys Tablet X only displays the predictions and auto corrections. Hitting the space bar selects the highlighted word. Is is very convenient and not something people speak of.

Take some time to root it. Trust me, it is worth it. It opens up a whole new world of possibilities. Backing up apps, settings and game saves with titanium backup is so awesome. Android police has a wonderful set of articles about rooting, why you should do it and essential apps for rooted devices. Droid-life and lifehacker have some articles and pieces on the topic as well. Team EOS ICS nightlys are also one of the most up to date roms I have ever encountered. Rooting is even easier with tools like xoot and cornea, which will take you through the steps with a couple of clicks. I personally haven't tried those methods since I was rooted before they came out but others have been successful with them.
I will probably do that today just to see if the keyboard works better, it's so incredibly frustrating to only be able to type half a word! Hm... maybe I should root my Revo...again...

Fire HD 10 [9th Gen] as a book reader ???

My Paperwhite has stopped working.
I want to try using our Fire HD 10 to replace it.
We were planning a trip to Europe until the epidemic began.
My galfriend bought one of these to use as a laptop during the trip for access to banks and other information needed to ease the trip.
I've only played around with this a little bit, but am finding that it's probably pretty useless for what was intended.
I'm finding that it's not very intuitive, very difficult to figure out how to get it to do the jobs needed.
I'll probably continue to use my desktop PC for everything except reading the bulk of digital files.
It has been built very recently, and is efficient to use.
I figured out how to upload ebooks from my PC to the Fire's Book folder, then access an ebook to read it.
It's` a pretty clunky process but does work.
There might be a better way to do it and place to put them, open to suggestions.
My major problems right now are accessing controls for readability, text size, contrast, lighting and so on, and bookmarking where the reading was left off at.
Just as I did with my Paperwhite, I want to divorce it from Amazon.
It will not have internet access.
All reading materials will be downloaded from the PC.
I want to optimize it to be a reader, nothing more.
If I can't get it to do that, I'll just dropkick it off a beach into the ocean.
Can't see much better use for it if I can't make a reader out of it.
Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Why you'd want to limit the tablet to only reading books is beyond me, but to "divorce it from Amazon" and install Google Services and Play Store, use the Windows Fire Toolbox you'll find under Android Developement. There are a lot of ereaders in Play Store.
