Overcloking - Thunderbolt General

Is anyone else having an issue with custom kernels? My Tbolt only seems to run on the stock kernel/voltage. When I flash an oc kernel sometimes it will load and then freeze the system.

All phones are NOT created equally. Your phone may just not be able to handle it while others could.

I realize every cpu used is not the same and can't handle being overclocked to the max, but come on, I can't overclock it at all without it freezing shortly after the Rom starting. Don't you think that's a little out of the ordinary?

I seem to be able to run speeds up to 1.8 or so without issues. Something I'm noticing is even with higher speeds, being on the smart-ass setting still isn't baby butt smooth consistently. I know they are still fine tuning it. I can run at a much lower clock speed while set to on-demand and get great results. How it is on battery life? Still testing. I'm using Ziggy's latest from this evening, BFS.

Yeah that does sound kinda sketchy. Which kernels have you tried? Have you tried running one that wasn't undervolted? I've heard people having issues with the UV kernels.

I know what you mean. I had the 1.2 GHz uv kernel from adrenalyne and the phone ran like crap. What's the point of over clocking if real world results are worse. Smart-Ass would stutter while it was ramping up and gun bros ran like crap until I reverted back to the stock kernel.
I'm hoping somebody makes an OC kernel that isn't under volted.

I'm running Imoseyon's version 3 of the lean kernal, 1.4 ghz, undervolted. it seems much faster and more responsive, and has yet to cause me any problems. Right now I'm running on 20 hours off the charger with 45% battery life left (extended battery, so assuming stock would last around 9 hours).

The only kernel that works for me is adrenaline's 2.6.32.21 battery is life kernel. I've tried his other kernels, imoseyon's lean kernels, and a few others all with the same result of freezing up the Tbolt.

Have you tried adrenalynes newest kernel? I'm using version 4 right now with no problems.

Yeah, another vote for Adrenalyne's kernels here.
I'm running the version 4c, and it's flawless on my phone. (4b locked up at higher speeds.) But the other tweaks he threw in there kick ass. Louder audio, faster charging and, I think, most significant, a potential fix for the GPS issues a lot of people are experiencing. Granted, mine was not too bad -- I could usually get a lock within a minute or two, but now it's locking in under ten seconds.
Can't quite comment on the battery life yet, but it's probably pretty damn good, especially with a minimal overclock or even staying at 1Ghz.

Running one of Ziggy's...so far so good...

I ran Drod's 1.5 kernel with no problems overclocking. When I switched over to Ziggy's or Adrynalyne's overclock kernels, I am unable to overclock with out my phone freezing and going into constant boot loops. Kinda weird but I have no real need to OC so I just went with Adrynalyne's stock kernel and been fine ever since.

Overclock lag

Hey everyone, I'm having a issue with the overclocking on my inspire. I searched but couldn't find anything relevant to our phones. When I wake my phone up it lags pretty bad for a few minutes and never really seems snappy. Even when it says I'm running at 1.2, 1.4.... its painfully slow. I'm currently running Ingersoll 2.4 with his JV kernel. This happened on Ar 3.5 as well. I did a full wipe before switching rom's and even un-rooted and re-rooted for good measure. I think it has to do with the speed the phone runs at while sleeping but I even tried to set it at 600 mhz while sleeping and still got the same lag. If I return to stock speeds and delete the overclocking app then it runs smooth. Help?
Edit: I've tried Setcpu and overclock widget with the same result from both.

You didn't say if you've tried different CPU governors, but have you tried different ones? (ondemand, interactive, etc.)
Yeah forgot to mention I did that as well. All with the same result, I'm starting to think maybe I got a bad CPU which just doesn't like to overclock at all. But it even lags if I only push it to 1050 mhz.
I can tell you when my phone is at screen off it's maxed at 368Mhz and I have it OC to 1.2Ghz when phone is in use and when I wake it up it is very responsive and runs great.
I wish mine was the same. the worst is when I'm trying to press the screen it won't react. then 3-4 seconds later it will decide to open the app and take forever doing it. Lame.
Before thinking the worst why not try to RUU to stock then reroot and see if that clears the issue? Worth a shot and if still bad go to AT&T and say the battery is shot or something and they will probably replace the phone for you.
lol I already returned to stock and rooted again for good measure. same result, but I believe your right, I need to think up a good excuse to get a replacement as I'm sure "it won't overclock" isn't good enough lol.

Hey everyone, i just upgraded to a Nexus S 4G this morning from the ol samsung transform, and i was planning on applying cyanogen but then i messed with the phone a bit, did root and restored a couple of my game apps...it seems to work with very nice speed, only serious issues ive noticed are just with the signal, sensitivity of keyboard, and i havnt had time to see battery life yet..
But i was wondering, since the stock rom is so clean and fast, why are we putting on different roms like cyanogen?
More importantly, as far as kernel, whats the best kernel right now for nexus 4g? im running stock kernel, but naturally and ideally id like even more speed(not sure what id use it for, but always nice), better battery life, and better data signals..
ive been reading about overclocked kernels a little bit and such, so basically im wondering about what you guys would say to all this? should i change rom &/Or kernel? to what? why? does overclocking at 1.4ghz like these kernels say have any negative side effects? things like that.

There are quite a lot of things that can be changed by flashing a custom ROM. Cyanogen is reported to be more responsive than stock android, and a slight improvement on battery life and performance. Also, with other ROMs like MIUI you can completely change the entire GUI basically. The lockscreen becomes changeable by one click in the themes app. I've also noticed a slight improvement in battery life/performance and responsiveness.
Also, with regards to kernels, they add extra features (like voodoo sound, BLN notifications, UV'ing, OC'ing, etc). Now if you're looking to overclock your CPU AND save on battery life then that is probably not going to happen. If you OC the CPU you'll as a result draw more battery power when it reaches it's peak. Hence why I went with the TEUV88 kernel. This kernel undervolts the CPU yet manages to give me the same performance as the stock kernel. It runs extremely nicely and the battery lasts me about 24-30 hours on moderate usage where as before I was getting around 16.

Edit:: note that both undervolting and overclocking can be dangerous for any phone. The kernel developers put their kernels through testing though to ensure they are stable enough for most people (I hope anyways). But be aware that it is possible to damage the hardware be either of these methods.
yeah im looking at more undervolting for battery life cause current performance seems great for me as of this point. but i mean cyanogenmod doesnt change much since its built on gingerbread, its just slightly more customized, but on the actual performance side, it is a slight increase? so whats the best kernel for undervolting and still getting stock performance or more? im guessing its the one u just mentioned? cause i saw a voodoo kernel or something on main dev page and itwas undervolted and OCed to 1.4 i think...idk.
Yeah you might be talking about the matr1x kernel. It ocs to 1.44 and is uved also. Plus has voodoo sound, bln and bld. Some people have issues with cm7 and some don't. I really don't like the look of miui so I can't say for it. But I use decks 1.3d with zero issues and matr1x kernel with zero issues along with heavy use 4+ hrs screen time in over 12hrs. Personally running 1.44 your phone will prolly lock up but I run 1.2 non stop no freezes or lockups or reboots. Try them and see qhich ones fit you and what you like.

I'm still on stock with mine and honestly, I don't need anything else... i get 12-15 hours of moderate use and i don't really know what lag is because i never experience it with my phone.
The above posters are correct in everyway. I mean it definitely comes down to preference. I was averaging about 13-15h on my stock kernel/rom but my phone would be basically completely dead.
I switched to TEUV88-rammstein2 (Trinity Undervolted rom). It has Voodoo sound, BLN (backlight notification), and with todays update it has touchwake mod. So as you can see my phone lasted 15h (still with 35% battery left) with 3h of screen on, and 45m of audio streaming, and lots of texting.

[Q] Overclocking cm7 to 1600 Mhz

So overclocking cm7 to 1600 doesnt work and causes boot loops, i have been trying to get a kernel that would do it and i cant find one.
anyone know any kernels that work?
Only kernal for cm7 is the one that is with it no other kernals are compatible as for 1600 some phones run fine at 1600 others don't just depends on your CPU in your phone

my cappy was maginally stable @ 1300 within a very narrow voltage range. my infuse runs 100% @ 1664 with a ton of uv untill i turn on gps and everything starts to get warm. every cpu is different.
most infuses seem to be a higher test cpu than galaxy s phones though. you may be able to run at 1500 or better if you take a lot of time and figure out what the cpu likes and doesnt like. remember heat, uv and rapid voltage change can all cause instability so too much uv can cause problems as well as too little! to get maximum speed you may want keep the top few freq's at the same voltage (not the same uv but the same actual voltage) and have zero uv on the low freq's. it can be a pain to figure it all out but when you see the benchmarks you may think it was worth it.
ok well i kinda messed around with the overclocking built in and was messing with the type of governors and userspace seems to support over clocking on 1600.
really weird but my phone hasnt done the boot loop yet.

I set mine at 1600 last night via SetCPU. After 5 min it got hot and started boot looping. Its running good at 1200 now. I'm gonna bump it up little by little.

Honestly, the performance of CM7 outperforms all the other ROMS even running at 1.2GHz (IMO). I really don't see much of a performance increase by stepping up the clock speed, just a decrease in battery life, so it's not worth it to me.
ive talked to many people about this and most can only run at 1.4ghz even though 1.6ghz was stable in froyo. alot of people repeat "it depends on your specific chipset" but i dont buy that cop out. i think theres something wrong with the 1.6ghz setting in cm7.

What Kernel best for CM7?

Hello I am wondering whats the best kernel for battery life on CM7 would it be faux or stock? And plus can I just install the faux Cm version start at 1.0 ghz to 1.4ghz, so by overclocking it means it will have less battery life? Could I just install that kernel and leave it at 1.0 ghz? And is the faux kernel better than the CM7 stock in terms of battery and what about performance?

What CM7 are you running? It makes a big difference. Also, battery life is different for every person. So to say one kernel is better than another is based on your use. Now I did notice a difference in battery life and performance when I flashed Faux's kernel. But best advice? Wait a couple days on stock, see how it is. Then flash Faux's or the any other kernel(as long as it CM7 based of course), to compare the results. Of course when your comparing make sure your phone usage is the same, or as close as you can get it

Ya. I flashed the DS OC/UV v.0.4.8 first but like faux says the battery readings were crazy, going up and down all time, I didnt know how much battery I had left. And this was after I calibrated my battery of course. Im using the CM OC/UV v.0.4.8 kernel and its great! Great performance and awesome battery life! Right now I got 38% left with moderate to heavy use on 10 1/2hrs. I posted a few screenshots of my battery use using Battery Monitor Widget Pro. I couldnt post the battery use one cause I rebooted my phone a couple times changing my theme. It reads like 2hrs on battery instead of almost 11. Also I posted a Antutu benchmark score as well. Try one see if it works, no two chips are the same, if it doesnt, he's got 4 different kernels. Plus there's the other kernels that I havent tried yet. Hope this helps!
Overclocking will reduce your battery life but increase your phone's performance. Use an app like SetCPU to choose your clockspeeds and voltages. I don't recommend messing around with voltages until you're much more familiar with over/underclocking.
I've used faux's kernels off and on and never been able to get my G2x to be rock solid stable versus the cyanogenmod kernel but it certainly did increase my battery life by a noticeable amount. Right now I'm running the Trinity ELP kernel and undervolted it even further and I've had absolutely zero issues. If you try faux and don't like it, give Trinity a try.
I prefer Trinity ELP or Faux DS versions if I am in battery savings mode depending on the ROM I am using.

[Q] Fasted Rom/Kernal Combo For NS4G

I'm looking for the fasted NS4G Rom/Kernel Combo...
I'm looking for something slim, but with Gapps. But will stay fast and be good on batter. (I know its a lot to ask). But it just feels like my phone is slowing to a crawl...I'm not looking to play any games on my phone (I have a N7 for that), just the basics, occasionally look things up on the web, text, call. I just want a fluid, fast experience.
I'm currently on the newest RasBeanJelly, willing to move or maybe just recommend me a Kernel, because I'm currently using stock.
Any help/tips/recommendations would be great!

CodeNameAndroid 3.6.6 with AIR Kernel is the fastest my phone has ever been. It is different for every handset and user though. Everyone uses their phone differently, and every handset isn't able to overclock, undervolt, or both at once, depending on how much better than the "standard" your specific chip happens to be.
I did overclock mine up to 1200mhz from the stock 1000mhz, but I was able to undervolt it to stock 1000mhz voltage (I believe it was 1250mv) at 1200mhz and remain stable with Ondemandx and Deadline. Was also able to knock -25 to -50mv's off of 1000 and 800mhz also and still stayed stable. I did get good battery life on that ROM too, but hard to say how much since the battery in mine is all but ruined (my kids play on it all the time so it's been charged like twice a day for a year and a half)
I know that overclocking/undervolting results vary from handset to handset depending on how well binned your chip is. In my experience, these things are almost always stable at 1200mhz with 1300mv with a ROM/Kernel combo that plays nice together. That is a 20% increase in speed with only a 3% - 4% increase in power. Well worth it IMO. I also loved Blackbean with Marmite and Crossbones with Matr1x. YMMV
Blackbean is my favorite looking, CNA was the best performing for me, and I've always liked Crossbones because it has always ran rock-solid on my NS4G with no reboots or lockups. Seems like I can always overclock higher and remain stable on Crossbones with Matr1x or AIR also (but it kills the battery so I stick to around 1200 because I dont even notice a difference)
