What is the best rom out there. Also i am running Serendipity 6.2 and for the life of me i dont see detail instructions on how to upgrade nore video. i am stuck. some help please.

Best rom threads are pretty much frowned upon since there have been about 600 of them created (maybe an exaggerated figure). Plus it's based on personal preferences anyway. As to your other problem, to get any help we are going to need quite a bit more detail about what the issue is please.

You download it.

matter of oppinion but i say dragon rc6 is the best. well it has the greatest ever boot sequence. but it is not a popular one and requires odin to get the full seemless splash screen to splash screen to boot animation to live wallpaper sequence.
as for the other question well what problem are you having? i mean if you are already on a custom rom all you need to do is backup the apps in titanium and reboot into recovery which may be in the power menu, otherwise power down, hold both volumes, push power, hold all 3 untill the first splash screen pops up. once in cwm recovery clear dalvik cache in advanced cwm features for good measure, then you go to install .zip from sd card>choose zip from sdcard>find your new rom and flash it.
if all hell breaks loose;
1 you use odin to flash back to stock,
2 master clear, (optional, looses all backups unless you move them to computer before everything went wrong)
3 boot up phone,
4 put rom on internal sdcard,
5 (option a. fast and dangerous) check that 3 button combo works, if it does then odin flash speedmod kernel .tar. phone wont boot. be warned. main reason to verify 3 button is you will need it if the flash goes bad. this is more dangerous from 2.1 but is the fastest way to flash a rom.
5 (option b. slow and safe) alternatively you can root in stock 2e recovery via update.zip then install rom manager
6a (speed mod method from 5a) 3button into recovery it should be cwm, (green letters)
6b.1 (rom manager method) open rom manager, select flash cwm recovery
6b.2 reboot into cwm from rom manager, (it will reboot but not into cwm yet) select reinstall packager, this step may need to be done twice before it enters cwm
7 install .zip from sdcard
8 choose .zip
9 flash new rom
pretty standard stuff. there should be a thread on this, oh wait there are several. so please search and be more specific, if there is a specific question you have then ask. don't just say there is no instructions, well because there is!

I use Andromeda3. It is a great ROM for battery life and reliability.

Haha nice Adam, posting about your work
But umm, it mostly goes by preference.. I suggest you look them up on youtube (Mobile Techvideo's channel). There's some like Adromeda3 which are very stable and stock styled or some like Team Phoenix's work that are more customized.
At the end, they're all great and you have to choose the one that suits you the best

Is there a ODIN file for the Rogers captivate froyo 2.2? Is it possible to flash roms without the ODIN file?
Do I just flash the JF6 Stock [email protected] Kernel anyways? I'm kind of stuck right now, this is my first attempt to flash and I've already hit a roadblock can anyone help please.
Read this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905042
I downloaded that file, but couldn't figure out what to do afterwards. I watched the mobile tech videos and it seemed that he was able to just click on the file and open the odin, while when I try to open it says "can't find application to open" after I extract it. Also I don't understand why I have to flash back to stock when I'm already at stock.

First download odin from this thread,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
Open it first and then point it to your rom image that you would like to use, you don't extract the file you have, it's ready to use as downloaded.
Please watch the videos again because you don't understand it yet and you're well on your way to a solid brick.
BTW using CWM with a .zip is easier then Odin IMHO, and can be done completely from your phone, no computer needed, it will also let you know if you have the three button recovery ( very important if something goes wrong ).
Read, read and read some more. Flashing a rom is not hard but it does have to be done correctly. If you want an almost guaranteed result you'll do the homework and learn something. I've only been here a while and rarely do I see a question that hasn't been answered 50 times already, your answers are here, go look for them and you'll pick up other things you will need to know when you decide to be a bit more adventurous with setting your phone up JUST like you want it.
Thanks for the information, it looks like I got lots of work to do.. The link you sent me has a broken Odin link on the other side, do you have a mirror or some sort so I can get the file? Also my final question is that since I have a Rogers Captivate I need to JL1 file not a J16 right? I've looked everywhere but couldn't find an answer to this... Thank you.

do you want to install a custom rom?? like phoenix or cog? if you are already rooted, just install clockwork mod and flash it to phone... then reboot into recovery and choose install zip from sd card... then select 'choose zip from sdcard'. then find the zip of the rom you want to install. I'm a rogers user and I've flashed all the latest roms (currently using andromeda 2.0). Never needed odin.
oh I see thanks, I've tried flashing Cognition via ROM manager with no success. I had Cognition on my SD card, installed and flashed the Clockwork mod and then selected "install ROM from SD card". From their it makes me select my ROM and then after I do it takes me to recovery mode. From here I select Reinstall packages and it says something like "Can't verify file" in red writing and aborts installation. I've always thought that maybe since I skip the whole "flashing ODIN" step that's why it's not working but obviously that's not the case. Do you know why it's not working for me? Thanks for the help.
are you running rogers 2.2 update? it has 3e recovery and will not allow zips to be flashed.
if that's the case, you will need odin3 from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821625
then put a new kernel in the PDA section. I used the tar file listed in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870760
then with your phone powered off, sim card and memory cards out (put back cover on so the battery doesn't fall out) hold 2 volume buttons and plug in usb... should go to download mode. then hit start.
boot up will take a bit while voodoo formats ext4 on your files. after that, you can go into recovery mode and flash zips from sd card

Have you downloaded quickboot.apk and tried that way?
why did you use rom manager? if you managed to flash audiophile, how can you not know it doesnt work?
odin drhonk's j1 gb kernel and then see if you can get into cwm. please uninstall rom manager.
i would follow fb's gb starter pack and start from scratch.
tried that.....did not work... any help will be greatly appreciated!
you followed fb's gb start pack and it didnt work?
I cannot odin either as odin does not recognize my device. my drivers are installed
Yes i did follow the starter pack. it was linked in the rom page
you're going to have to search from now on.
since you are new, i will paraphrase, but i've explained this is very high detail multiple times before.
uninstall your drivers. i would run ccleaner and clean your registry. reboot computer. reinstall drivers. remove sd card and sim from phone. plug phone into different usb port. let it install fully. once it installs, reboot computer and plug it in again to make sure it recognizes. once it recognizes, unplug phone, then put it in download mode and let it install.
once it installs, open odin and reboot phone into download mode. flash stock rom from there.
sd card. wipe sd card on computer. make sure you backup your pics and stuff. put sd card back in phone and format on phone.
now follow gb start guide.
im typing this while at work...your thanks is appreciated.

i am not 100% sure if this will work, but copy the dialeractivitytab.apk from system/app in audiophile and copy it over to the octane system/app. make sure you back up the octane one in case it doesnt work. then flash the rom/fix permissions and see if it works. not guaranteed, but worth a try.

[q] do not use rom manager - help!

I read the posts, but maybe I did not understand?
I downloaded CWM and installed via the Android Market. Then I see the icon is named ROM Manager (whoops, is this already bad). I hit the "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" button. Then I used up/down volume and power to boot into CWM and did a backup from there.
So am I screwed?
Is the backup good?
Can I use the CWM that I have as long as I boot into it?
Please, I have not been able to understand exactly what the "DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER" means. If I just boot is that ok?
I guess you can tell I'm new but I have a lot of software experience - just not in this environment - maybe I'm moving too fast for my knowledge (I think so now!).

Now would be a good time to read:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311081
As you can see, CWM is included in the kernel you flash, and thus there is no need for ROM manager. It doesn't play nice with this device anyway, and is just unnecessary imo.
Use the recovery not rom manager itself...

So the OP is fine if he uninstalls Rom Manger even though he used it to flash CWM Recover? That seems a lot simpler then the cwm injected kernal method I just did.
Install rom manger, flash CWM, uninstall rom manger... flash roms all day. Would that work?

ROM MANAGER IS NOT CWM.
CWM is in the KERNEL (well, to be specific, in the initramfs of the kernel) on nearly all Samsung devices.
ROM Manager is an app that tries to install CWM, but FAILS to do so correctly on our device. CWM versions installed by ROM Manager DO NOT WORK PROPERLY on the I777.
ok heres the deal the cwm you booted into was probably rom manager cwm. so here are the next steps to take. question is are you using a custom kernel that has cwm installed? when you rooted your device did you have cwm installed? i also noticed you were using a skyrocket. when i rooted my wifes SR I did the all in one package. My opinion is just unistall rom manager and reflash cwm. then reboot into cwm and make a nandroid backup. although in theory your backup you did with rom manager is good forever unless you delete the file under /clockworkmod/backup.

OP, if you ****ed up probably the easiest step of the process(after all in one of the stickies it says DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER, as so), rooting your phone is not for you.
Either that or you're trolling.

Reading through this made me confused. But to the OP. Mod Manager is fine. You can use that to install CWM recovery. Just be sure to chose the T-Mobile SGSII version of CWM when it asks.
DO NOT USE ANY OF THE ROMS IN MOD MANAGER THOUGH. They are built for the SGSII phones. You can however use Rom Manager for all other options such as installing roms through SD, fixing permissions, and booting up into CWM, etc.

Probably the part about what else he's supposed to do. If I knew, I'd tell him. I assume he should read the whole thread in dev about how to get CWM installed through recovery but I'm just a novice. You might have been more helpful but I see that a lot of you are too busy hanging out in in dark closets having sex with your phones... tin foil hats and all. I know it's a pain answering the same questions over and over. I've provided support on a lot of boards and on a lot of subjects. When I got tired of typing the same answers, I started keeping them all in a text file so I could copy and paste them, links and all. That way, the info is spread all over the place and new users don't have to resort to finding the single "needle in the haystack." I know the L33T (do they still use that term? It's been about 20 years since i've seen it... probably for the good) love to repeatedly type "DO A SEARCH." Why not just help. If you don't want to and only want to maintain being L33T... do it elsewhere. You serve no function other than stroking yourself. I hate the "slam the noob" mentality. We were all one at some point. Merry Christmas.
The confusion here is that the OP posted this in the i777 forum. The i777 CANNOT use Rom manager to flash recovery and they have to use a cwm injected kernel.
The OP needs to learn where to read about his phone and remember what model he has.

[Q] Phone did its own master reset... now I am determined to root

So every night before I go to bed I reboot my stock G2x so that it won't freeze and my alarm will hopefully work. Last night I did my usual reboot and when it turned on, it had done a master reset and everything was lost. So now I want to root it more than ever.
I have been reading a lot the last few weeks about rooting and I am still a little confused. Here are my issues: I have read two things about using Superoneclick and they are that it does work with 2.3 and that it doesn't work with 2.3. Then I have read the ref threads for rooting and they seem to go in circles. Also what kernel to use with which rom.
I am paranoid about bricking my phone so that is why I am (probably) reading too deep into the steps. I just have too many questions, sorry. And yes, I searched quite a bit... this might be my first post here, but its not my first forum.
Don't use superoneclick, NVFlash clockworkmod and install a custom ROM from there, just rooting won't help because then you're still on stock.
Install a CM7 based build, and if you want you can use a CM9 build but those are no where near finished.

Ok, ill help you out since your new here.
Step 1: Head over to lg's website and install the lg g2x drivers
:http://www.lg.com/us/mobile-phones/G2X-Driver/index.jsp
(install tmobile lg g2x android usb driver)
Step 2 :
Install Clockworkmod recovery using nvflash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
To do so
Take out battery,
hold volume up and volume down and plug in the usb cable. Do not let go of these buttons until you complete the next step.
Start the nvflash program, and flash cwm 5.0.2.4.
Step 3 : Get a custom rom.
I reccomend the latest cm7 nightly for now, as cm9 is still unstable.
Download the latest nightly from here: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=p999, and copy it over to your sd card
Step 4: Backup your current rom : turn off phone, boot while holding volume down and power button until clockworkmod appears. Use the volume keys to scoll down to backup/restore. Use power button to select it. Select backup.
step5) Go to clockworkmod, and hit install zip from.... Choose "choose zip from sd card". Navigate to the rom, and install it.
step6) Reboot and enjoy!

Wipe data factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik everytime will limit the chances of bugs. Some people wipe dalvik and cache only when updating from the same rom to avoid having to resetup their phones with apps and settings they like. But I always do all 3 wipes no matter what and the only issues I ever have are standard rom issues. Its always best to wipe. I see post after post of people claiming issues when they have not done a full wipe. Someone recommends to them to do a full wipe and that almost always fixes their issues.

Also, especially for your first flash, wipe system, or just get G2x scrubber (flashable zip) which does all of the above and saves you a few extra steps to go to in CWM.
I am doing this on a mac (but using Windows 7 since most of this is for windows) and I am having issues with the apx driver. It doesn't say "update" it just says no driver installed. Its always something lol. I'll continue this battle tomorrow. Thanks for all the help everybody and I think I hit the "thanks" button for everyone that helped!

With nvflash you cannot brick this phone . This is what I love the most about this phone!

Sounds like you're on the wrong tab. Go to the "Driver" tab. Start>right click My Computer>Properties>(on new window, on the left) Device Manager>(unknown device should be visible with either a red X or a yellow caution sign)double click on unknown device>left click on driver tab> select update driver or install driver (I forget the exact thing for unk device)>Browse My Computer>point to driver directory, the WHOLE APX driver folder, no sub folder.
I knew that i forgot about something!
Wipe all user data
Wipe cache
wipe dalvik cache.
*** i didn't mention installing the apx driver did i?
plug the phone in without a battery while holding volume up and volume down. Wait for the computer to search for a new device. Upon finding a new device, hit start, then search for "device manager". Open it. There will be an unknown device with a yellow question mark (APX device) next to it. Right click it, then hit update driver software. Hit "Let me choose", then browse to the folder of things you downloaded for nvflash.

Personally, I would recommend Eaglesblood or Hellfire phoenix CM7 based builds because they both offer much better speed and battery than stock CM7

Wipe system for good measure.
OK I couldn't wait until tomorrow so after a quick windows update (I never log in to Windows anymore) I tried it again and was able to update the apx. I booted in CWM and created a backup. Downloaded the newest nightly but haven't flashed it yet. How do I flash a kernel since it appears as though for the cm7 stuff I'll need a cm7 based kernel?
You do not have to flash a kernel, CM7 includes a kernel that is stable. If you want to overclock or undervolt there are other kernels as an option.
Don't forget the google apps http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110114-signed.zip
They are flashed from CWM recovery just like CM7
Grab either Morfic's, Faux123's, or Dragon G2x from the dev section and flash it in the same manner you flash a ROM. I would, personally, recommend flashing right after the ROM flash. Also, I think we all overlooked gapps! That's google apps, google it if you want to know why it's not included in the ROM. http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip
Gapps gives you stuff like Market and the ability to add google accounts to your phone. Um, let's see, as IRASadPanda mentioned, yes do a full wipe which means either grab the G2x scrubber or manually go to Mounts and Storage and wipe System, Cache, and Data. You will also want to go to "Advanced" and wipe the Dalvik, the thing I am going ot do right after this is see if I can determine for sure if wiping data also wipes the Dalvik (I don't want opinions, please, I have plenty of my own). But just in case I'm wrong, wipe Dalvik. I think everything is covered at this point.

OK, don't panic yet! Basic questions first:
Did you flash a recovery like CWM (Clockworkmod) before trying to flash the rom?
Are you able to get into recovery mode via volume up+power+home?
Why dont you reflash the ROM and then do the right Gapps? That way you wont have any screwed up files at all. If you really screwed it up just Odin back to stock and start again.
just flash the rom over the top then flash the right gapps
I went into panic mode and my head went cloudy. I kept olding down volume instead of volume up. Got into recovery and just doing a restore for now till I can make sure I have all the right files...
thanks guys for answering so quickly.

Good, now when that's done, lets get you up and running with paranoid. It is alot easier, and generally safer to flash through CWM on the phone itself then through odin on your desktop or even the odin app. What method were you using? And more importantly did you do a IMEI backup?
Haven't done the imei backup yet. Need to though asap. I always flash through cwm but once I installed the wrong gapps (didn't even think of grabbing a JB gapps until after I got my phone into recovery and restored) I had no idea how to get into recovery. Once I found the goo manager in system settings I was able to get into recovery. Tried flashing another gapps file (which again was the wrong file) which is where I really freaked out with my framework and setup no working. Was able to clear my head and remember the volume UP not down. I'm restored now and will leave it on synergy till I do my imei backup. Haven't even looked into it to be honest. Is it difficult? Is paranandroid really much better as far as battery life to worry about taking the time to do it?

The IMEI is very easy to do, especially if your running Synergy. There are 3 methods in the link I'll attach. The first uses any terminal emulator app (free in play store) and simply typing in a code: su (enter) then: reboot nvbackup (enter)...done! Then there is the next way to create a second easier to install if something were to happen way using a Synergy recovery zip. You must do the first method first or the zip way will backup the wrong IMEI. On the link there is another link to the Synergy Key zip file (its right in the directions with HERE in bold as the link). Download zip, run it in recovery ONCE to create the backup, thats it! The synergy backup can then be used on other roms. Overall its super easy, I spent 2hrs researching and 5 min creating the backup. IT really is as simple as that, just do it in order. As far as paranoid goes, I don't have hands on with it, too many bugs for me to bother with it yet, but yes it generally should use less battery due to JB's unmatched efficiency.
Here's the link: (only need to read the first page for making the backups, read further to restore which hopefully won't be needed!)

I will look into it tomorrow. Thank you so much for your help!! Very much appreciated.
I need/want a fully functional Rom without a bunch of bugs. Might stay with synergy till some bugs can be worked out.
