[Q] Nandroid restore problem - General Questions and Answers

I have been unable to restore any of my nandroid backups. They are all listed, but nothing happens when I select one. I tried doing it first with ROM Manager and then tried the Vol Down - Power button approach. All I get is a blank screen. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have no trouble installing ROMs from the SD card.

u should have a custom recovery installed in the first place.. do this..
go to recovery by holding down home+vol down+power..
use the stock nandroid backup..

Did you say to hold down Home+Vol Down+Power? I haven't heard of using the Home button before.

yes in some buttons its home button+power+vol down
try it

Try updating CWM in ROM Manager. The latest version is 3.0.1.0

I tried flashing ClockworkMod using ROM manager, and the first time I tried it I got ClockworkMod 2.5. I have tried several more times, but now it immediately responds with a message saying it was successfully downloaded. It couldn't have downloaded anything that fast! Also, I have made several nandroid backups but am unable to restore them and am wondering if I need to have S-OFF for it to work. If so, how well does the Unlockr unrevoked-forever.zip program work? I can flash it from the SD card since I have successfully flashed the Froyo USCC ROM. That much does work.

They should be there.

[Q] [fixed] how to flash without clockworkmod recovery?

good day to you all,
i was flashing CM7 rc2 to my DHD the other day, and while starting the flashing my sd card didn't respond anymore, and the flash failed, no return to cw recovery just reboot. so i rebooted and now there's android with nothing on it, just system+sense. clockworkmod recovery everything is gone.
since there isn't an market app (versions floating on the web fail to launch) where i can download rom manager, this option does't work, been looking for versions floating around the web, but can't find a correct version that is able to flash clockworkmod.
is there a safe way to flash without clockwork?
so, i have root, eng-hboot, cid 11111111 and a broken rom.
how should i proceed?
<<
managed to restore a back up after finding that clockworkmod is hidden behind the recovery option in hboot.
>>
Rom manager is available in the market. So can u boot into a working rom?
Switch off ur dhd. Hold volume - and press power button. It should boot to clockwork recovery.
If it doesn't. Download 'rom manager' from the market. Open it and press flash clockwork recovery. Re-download the rom and flash it again.

[Q] Error trying to back up ROM/Install new ROM

New to all this rooting and flashing ROM's and need some serious help since I can't figure it myself. I'm running a HTC Droid Eris, Firmware 2.1, have it rooted, and ROM manager. When I go in to back up my ROM, it reboots, then the screen comes up with a red /!\ over a phone. This also happens when I try to install a new ROM as well. I don't know what's going on or how I can fix this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for all your time.
I think you should fully wipe your phone.
When you reinstall new rom without wipe may cause some unexpected error.
I can't even back up my Rom on there right now. By the way, how do I fully wipe my phone? Thanks for all the help.
Did you press flashclockwork recovery in RM first? And about that /'\ when you hold volume down and power youll get a menu then you should select recovery, once there youll see /'\ then you should hold volume up and power and then youl be in stock recovery. Once you have flashed a successful clockwork recovery image through RM , you might have to either select reinstall packages twice through your stock recovery first before clockwork will kick in. If you dont have that option in stock recovery, then just enter stock recov twice and the clockwork should overide the stock. If that doesnt help search amon ra's ( custom recovery )for your device videos of this are on theunlocker.com

Did you use Titanium Backup? Great app btw.. And Rom manager, you used the Clockwork recovery mod correct? That's how I flash.
I did click on Flash Clockwork Recovery a few times, but can't find where it says to reinstall packages. I tried volume down and power, but didn't see a menu that says recovery. I'll try to find something on the unlocker. Thanks for the help. Hope I can get it to work.

Be very careful with Titanium. It's a great app, and very useful for a lot of things, but many users have had problems when restoring apps.
A general rule of thumb is when switching ROMs, try to restore as little apps+data as possible. App only is usually the best route.
I was experiencing many ROM issues on multiple ROMs after restoring, even only apps without data. Now I just use titanium to freeze apps, detach apps from the market, and uninstall apps. I reinstall all my apks directly from the saved files on my SD card.

Make sure your phone is off before the volume down+power to boot into recovery. If that doesn't work and it only makes the phone reboot itself, battery pull first, then volume down+power. That should get you into recovery.
If you still have a lot of problems with CM, try amon-ra instead.

I copied a ROM to my SD card, but when I go in to Apply sdcard:update.zip, I get the following:
Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to open /sdcard/update.
zip (no such file or directory)
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Why does this happen?
After I hold the power and vol up buttons in stock recovery this appears too.
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
Are you using clockworkmod by RM? Or you doing this all by stock recovery. In rom manager. Flash clockwork, then below that is reboot into recovery try that and see what you get. Also, if you flashed clockwork via rm, you should see an update.zip file. On your internal sd. Do you have that on your internal SD. And are you putting the rom file on your internal sd?
Sent from SGS Captivate CM7 or MIUI with Escapist orTKGlitch using XDA premium app.
I did all that and still get this (E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command). I downloaded the ROM I want on to my computer, then copied it to my sd card, but nothing seems to work. I even went in to RM and tried to get the ROM straight from the sd card and keep getting that message. What am I doing wrong? Would Verizon help me if I took it in? Also, if there is anyone in Beaverton Oregon willing to help me, that would be awesome so they could see it hands on. Thanks for all the help and info.

[Q] No longer able to boot into ClockworkMod Recovery after latest ROM flash.

After flashing the latest ROM I was messing around with (WajkIUI 2.1.6) the phone would crash and reboot within 30 seconds of booting up. The previous ROM that was running was FAUXMIUI_RG2xV2.0.0 (01/08/2011 [v2.0.0]OVERCLOCK) that was stable except for when I’d turn wi-fi on after being off for 8 hours or so phone would reboot.
I figured I would boot into ClockworkMod Recovery and restore one of the nandroid backups, I tried booting into recovery I found out that I could not. When I hold the volume down and press the power button I see the screen that says software update (like when flashing with OneClickRecoveryFlasher).
Whenever I flash a new ROM I will Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, and then wipe dalvik before installing zip. I’ve always run cyanogenmod nighties; FAUXMIUI_RG2xV2.0.0 was the first MIUI ROM I’ve used.
When I run OneClickRecoveryFlasher, I do not see any errors on the command prompt so I am assuming it was successful, or at least thinks it was.
I tried to Restore LG G2x Stock Recovery using OneClickRecoveryFlasher and then flashing v5.0.2.0 and still no ClockworkMod Recovery, also tried v4.0.1.5 and still no ClockworkMod Recover.
I then tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1248644 and with that I was able to get back to stock 2.3.3, tried to use OneClickRecoveryFlasher to flash ClockworkMod, still no go.
I tried LG Mobile Update and that proceeded to install something, not really sure what the update was, after the update finished, phone rebooted into stock 2.3.3. Shut the phone down and tried to flash ClockworkMod and still nothing.
I did a hard reset following http://mobilephonerepairguides.blogspot.com/2011/04/lg-g2x-hard-reset.html
I also tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1183168, that got me to stock 2.3.3 but I still could not boot in to ClockwordMod Recovery.
I’m having a hell of a time wrapping my head around what I screwed up. Did I somehow destroy the recovery partition, is that possible? Any ideas what I broke and how to fix it? Can I used adb to view the partition table, would that tell me if something was corrupt?
Any help and ideas would be appreciated, I have tried doing my due diligence and I apologize if I missed something obvious.
Thanks,
-Matt

Did you nvflashed recovery? If no then do that first.
NVIDIA NEVER AGAIN!
If you did the LG Updater it returned your phone to stock everything, including recovery. You need to use NVFlash (One Click method okay) to reflash CWM and then you should be good to go.
When the phone is completely off, hold volume down, then hold the power button and don't let go of both until the second lg logo.
If you hold volume down too early it'll give you the software update screen.
Well that's embarrassing, thanks buru898 that did the trick and got me into CWM Recovery. I never remember holding the power button for that long but it worked and I'll remember that for next time.
Thanks

[Q] Boot into Clockwork Recovery mod

Hi,
I am trying to flash my LG P500 to Cyanogen Mod 9 and the manual I found stated, that I should partition my SD card using Clockwork mod.
So I found ROM Recovery app in Google Play and installed it. Afterwords I downloaded Clockwork Flash using ROM Mangager app and everything seems OK.
But when I try to boot to clockwork mod, my phone is always being flashed into factory default.
I power off the phone, press vol down, home and power on buttons - the phone starts up, an animation of white box and android logo beside shows (with a progressbar at the bottom) - I think this is because of installed clockwork - then I release those 3 buttons I was holding, but the phone simply resets itself into factory default.
I also tried to hold those buttons all the way, until some "DOS-like" screen shows up, but the phone keeps rebooting itself.
The next thing I tried was to boot into recovery using ROM manager app, but it also did not work - I don't know, if it should boot into recovery by itself or I should press those 3buttons (vol down, home, power on/off)
Could you help me, what am I doing wrong?
thanks
It sounds like your phone is not rooted. Follow the sticky topics in this section for how to root your phone. Start with this one:

Once you have root, install clockworkmod again. Then, you'll have success.

no, my phone is already rooted
That's the stock recovery, that means ClockworkMod Recovery did not flash properly. See if you granted SuperUser rights to ROM manager, and check the SuperUser app if you had mistakenly checked 'Remember Choice'.

Dont use Rom Manager.
You dont have recovery installed.
Find some other way to flash recovery.. there are many in this forum.
I suggest you use Rom Manager to download CWM and then boot into cwm .
I suggest http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1827723
This is safe for installing custom recovery.
Thanks to Shinobisoft.
Use AmonRA recovery. Works flawlessly for all roms in this forum.

Blu Elite 3.8 CWM Problem...

Hello Forum people:
I have a strange problem with my Blu Elite 3.8, aka karbonn a9.
I have followed the Karbonn A9 process of rooting and it worked perfectly.
But ater following the CWM installation to the letter I cant seem to get the phone into CWM recovery using the key combinations.
Things I have tried:
I've installed various versions of CWM getting the same results.
Tried different key combinations such as Power+Volume UP, Power+Volume Down, Power+Volume Up + Home
I can report a workaround, install CWM Rom Manager from playstore, then I open the app and it inmediatly wants to install a CWM version for your phone model.
Naturally I choose the last option: "Not Listed"
then the app asks if you have installed CWM manually, I choose yes.
I can now reboot into CWM via the CWM app but I really wish I could to this without booting into the rom itself.
Sure I can install custom roms but if i end up with a faulty/non working rom im screwed because i wont be able to use the CWM app to boot into recovery to flash a backup.
Any Ideas?
