YOu know how you can buy those little car chargers that broadcast an fm signal of what your phone/ipod is playing? well, does that evo have this capability? if so is there an app for this? I think this would be awesome

Could be wrong, but I don't think the evo has the necessary hardware to make this possible. I had a phone with a transmitter a while back, the LG musiq, and it had a separate antenna to broadcast.
I wish the Evo had this! This is something the N900 has and externally it doesn't appear to have a extra antenna.
I'm pretty sure that I read that the FM chip is capable of broadcasting and receiving, so I think it's possible.
Yes it does it just needS to be activated

Here are the chip details from the ifixit tear down
broadcom BCM4329
Well the source was just released.. so maybe someone could activate it IF its possible... i would love that

it would be so nice to have this. whenever your in someones car and they have no aux input on their stereo, totally blows!
Confirmed Transmitter
According to this page from the broadcom website it does have a transmitter.
http://www.broadcom.com/products/Bluetooth/Bluetooth-RF-Silicon-and-Software-Solutions/BCM4329
The Broadcom BCM4329 integrates a complete IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n system (MAC/baseband/radio) with Bluetooth® 2.1 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), and FM radio receiver and transmitter.
Popping my cherry on an app post.. should have been to thank Toast, hero, Flipz.. etc hah
I would kill for this. Okay, maybe not kill, but I'd definitely pony up some bucks for it. The crap FM transmitters you find at the store are overpriced and poor hardware.
I'm starting to get into creating apps with the end goal of authoring my own ROMs. If anyone can point me in the right direction (or if test subjects are needed), I'm not worried about borking my EVO
This device http://direct.motorola.com/ens/carkits/learn-T505.html from Motorola works that way (I know it works on the Pre and other devices that can stream music over bluetooth)
Are u guys suggesting that something like this device be enabled from within the phone itself? If so, that'd be awesome!!! I'd pay for that too!!! (Cuz, I've been holding off on buying one of these, bt the price is going down, so I might get one soon)

Um yes, it streams music over bluetooth to car radio. I use it in my car everyday with pandora.
Way better then satellite radio.
To whoever is planning on attempting to develop this:
I will give you a check. Put whatever amount you'd like on it. Must have this!
i was wondering this same thing earlier this morning. This would be incredible.
Just curious, anyone planning on writing an app for this or anything in the worx? I had one of those LG Fusics, then an LG Musiq back in the day, which both had the FM transmitting ability... they didn't work great, but they still could do it. I thank you profusely, whoever develops the app, ahead of time!

I found this while searching online. This appears to be the source code section for the Broadcom4329 drivers. I have no idea where to even begin with this, but maybe someone else could find it useful.

Hopefully the link posts properly, because I can't really post links yet.
I might not kill for this but I would definitely maim. PLEASE someone get this working!
I would definitely pay for a app like this!
I just fired up my old LG Muziq a couple days ago because I can't take the low grade sound coming out of my horrible tape adapter
If this was already posted, please don't shoot me. I am merely trying to help with a workaround for the flaky GPS on our SGS's.
I know that many of us are done dealing with the GPS on our Galaxy S, and to be honest I was already contemplating in the last two weeks to get rid of this phone and switch back to my Nexus One.
Also as many of you, I have tried various software fixes from changing some simple settings all the way to replacing system files with no real improvment.
My solution is certainly not for anyone and there might have been similar posts alreay, however I don't think those solutions where freeware and without any restrictions. This one is free and the software does not have any timelimit or other restrictions.
Requirements:
1) You need a Bluetooth GPS module (in my case I have a Holux GPSlim 236)
2) Download an app called 'Bluetooth GPS Provider' puplished by mobile-j.de (its free)
3) enable BT in settings, create a link to your GPS module
4) under settings/application/development make sure 'allow mock locations' is eabled
5) open 'Bluetooth GPS Provider' and under preferences the first item lets you choose the BT GPS receiver.
6) you may need to change the 'GPS type' under preferences if you cannot get data.
7) back on the main page of the 'Bluetooth GPS Provider' software click on 'Start'
Once you have a lock you can use the navigation software of your choice.
If you are using Google Navigation, it will ask you to enable the internal GPS, which is fine. Turn it on via the task pane and once you are on the mapping software you can tun it back off the same way. The software only checks at the startup of Google Nav if the internal GPS is running.
The tracking with my Holux was dead one - and I do mean dead on. It tracked every corner I took without any lag.
If I can get the APK of the file I will upload it here, but the app should be accessible to anyone on the market.
The APK is now attached in case someone has a hard time finding it
No offense intended, but I really don't feel like spending another $50-$100 for a bluetooth GPS receiver.
If you already have one, I can see this being a viable option though.

Well, I know what you mean.
If I didn't have the Holux already I would not consider this either, but someone else may not even realize this option exists and it certainly is a better solution than using the GPS receiver with a laptop and some windows based tracking software.

Definitely agreed.
U can get them much cheaper on ebay. Or if you have an old windows phone, which is what I use (my tilt or fuze)

Huh. Hadn't thought of that. Wonder if my Tilt could still prove useful then?
Perfect accuracy and tracking for me. Gpsgate for winmo is like 15 bucks.

I tried using this but I kept getting some weird "resets" randomly. It wouldn't really reset but the screen would go black and then the home screen would re-load, the phone signal would be disconnected and then finally reconnect, just like it does when you power up your phone. The button backlights would be lit the entire time it "resets" though. I'm using Cognition v2.2 Beta7 right now.
When it does work it works really well. Just had too many "resets" trying to use it and becomes frustrating. Maybe updating to the latest Cog will help.

Hi all,
I ws reading in a thread here that you can get a samsung nexus s car dock to automatically startup car mode once I plug it into the car dock.
Was wondering
1- where do I purchase some nfc chips.
2- how do I set this up?
Going to pickup a samsung car dock by end of week.
Thanks
Heeter
Car dock mode does not automatically start when put into the dock, this is because the S 4g does not have the magnetic sensor on the back of it.
To get the car dock to activate you will need to download this app:
NFC Task Launcher
and buy some NFC tags from any of these sites:
tagstand dot com
tagage dot net
Then just put the sticker on the back of the dock and configure a profile in the NFC task launcher app to open up car dock when you get close to that NFC sticker. You will not have to worry about your battery draining by having the phone next to the sticker for long periods of time because the phone will only read the tag once. It will only read it again if you move the phone away from the tag then close to it again, or if you turn off the screen and turn it back on.
Go to youtube and search: "NFC Task Launcher 2.4 - Demo"
EDIT: I DONT HAVE MORE THAN 8 POSTS SO I CANT POST LINKS YET, SORRY
Thanks for your reply.
I have an at&t 3g nexus s.
Do I still need the app? I think that don't because my NS already reads tags.
Thanks for those links.

I have a T-Mobile NS, and the Samsung car dock doesn't launch the car home app for me. I don't think it's just an issue with the 4g.
If you have Bluetooth in your car stereo you can have that connection start car home though, that's what I do.

Yes, NFC Task Launcher programs the tags to do what you want them to do

Yes - only because there's no built in functionality for doing things like manipulating the hardware radios or starting an application directly from an NFC tag.
There are a few demo videos here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980741 as well as a specific car dock demo (at the bottom of the first post).
You can download the app for free and if it's something you like / use it's up in the Market as well as a paid app. I do keep the free app updated though and it is not limited.
As far as purchasing NFC tags I've collected quite a few resources you can use here: https://sites.google.com/site/nfctasklauncher/nfc-tags

The OEM car dock is in stock: http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/ECS-V1A3BEGSTA
Otherwise there's a thread under accessories that lists some cheaper "universal" alternatives.
Great posts, krohnjw!!
Awesome explanation and breakdown, I bought the NFC Task Launcher app!
Thanks guys,
I was heading over to Bestbuy this weekend to purchase a dock, but will get it from samsung instead.

Outstanding
I like the OEM Dock - the use of a stiff rubber for the corners make it a solid fit without scratching the phone. It's a bit pricey compared to a universal dock, but it fits the phone well.
Ugh!!
Sorry for re-firing up an old post.
Looks like Samsung Canada cant get me a car dock. Best buy don't have them either. I can't order from USA Samsung site either. Can't order from Samsung 1-800 USA either.
Wow!
Oh well

There are services that will give a US address to ship to and then post it world wide for you when they receive it. I don't know what they charge for this, but people were using this to get the Nexus One a while back.
Alternatively, if you really want to get the Samsung Dock I'd be willing to pm you my address and send it your way USPS if you're willing to cover the shipping on it . This, understandably, requires quite a bit of faith that I won't rip you off, but I figured I'd offer if you really want the OEM dock.
Edit: I found one: http://www.oneusaaddress.com/
I've never used a service like this and can't vouch for them, but other seemingly have used them with success.
Like the title says. Is there any app i can use to send directions to my car without any subscription. I have onstar in my car but do not want to pay. Any info would help.
From my experience with my old car that had on star was that you needed to have an active on star subscription for turn by turn directions

Edit:
There is an on star app for cars '10-12

Yea i have the remote link, buts thats it i dont wanna pay onstar. Any way around that?
Root your car lol that's on the on star side so I don't think your gonna find a way without having a active subscription. The directions work through the on star servers/satellites
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I use car locator. When you park, set your location, on your way back it shows you a radar with a red dot which is your car, and a map at the bottom that shows where you and your car are located, you'll be a green dot, the car is the red dot. you basically follow the red dot until it gets to the middle of the radar, you should then be at your car
it doesn't give you turn by turn navigation though.

I was reading my Onstar manual and it says that it uses Verizon Wireless for cell data and connectivity. It has a big disclaimer that if you roam outside Verizon's cell tower coverage you may loose Onstar if that helps!!!
So I am a bit late on the follow up. After a lot of research I found that General Motors cars after 2010 can be hacked thru Bluetooth. It is a service of which I have part of, I just stumbled across it. It is a guy who "hacks" car computers. Basically you have to either remove your old on-star unit and mail it in or go to the junkyard and pull one from a compatible vehicle, send it in with some vary specific info about your car such as VIN ect. A cool thing is if you have a 2007 or above you can get a computer out of a 2010 or newer and he can make that work so you can use Bluetooth to start your car from your phone, share WiFi, tether your phones DATA to your car for navigation ect and even share with others in your car. Here is the link, I get nothing from this just I got my 2009 Pontiac GT G6 done and it makes the useless On-Star useful again without paying 40 a month plus another 30 to Verizon for not the best service and a severely limited amount of DATA. Most newer cars you take out the stereo and that's half of your Driver Information Center so you cant see anything about your car and some will not EVEN START without it being present. You want to get the most out of your phone on a GM vehicle here it is.... http://www.whiteautoandmedia.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=54&vmcchk=1&Itemid=54
I haven't seen much discussion on this, but I saw it on some Android BLOG a while ago. So there are these "dongles" that plug into your car's computer and talks to you phone to give you all sorts of data from your car.
The one I found is called Automatic: http://www.automatic.com/
Has anyone had experience with this type of thing? If so, which product did you use?
Thanks,

I use an application called Torque (Pro version) and an OBDII BT dongle from eBay
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Super-Mini-...231?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item3a879398c7
Works great and I don't pay any other fees.
Less than $20 and done.
Awesome. Thanks for the input.
Looks like I'm going for the Super Mini ELM327 V1.5 OBD2 OBD-II .
I Appreciate it!
Yeah, torque is the best. I've been using it for 3 or so years now. Best app I have ever purchased and try dev has always been active. I hate paying for an app, like juice defender, that the dev just dumps after 6 months.
