Definitive Battery Thread

Hello everyone!
I've spent the past week doing as much research as possible into what type of battery to buy for my G2 and i've come across alot of information to say the least. Alot of opinions, alot of useless data, and some useful data. I just wanted to summarize this info for everyone. And add any new information that people post in the thread below, including battery life data.
Popular Batteries:
- The Mugen 1800mAh - $45 (1400mAh in testing)
- The Senido 1750mAh - $50 (1400mAh in testing)
- The HTC 1500mAh 35H00123-11M (-00M).. Also known as the TP2/EVO battery - $7 (1500mAh in testing)
- The CHICHITEC 1800mAh - $20/each or $40 for 2 + Charger (untested)
Research:
- Mugen and Seido seem to have EXTREMELY inconsistent mAh ratings, HTC seems to be the most consistent.
- On the other hand, trying to compare these battery assuming constant maximum power draw is a little unfair.
The one thing that seems constant is that HTC's battery's perform as expected in every environment and over time, whereas the third partys seem to be able to pull values closer (somewhat) to what they advertise under certain conditions. Not to mention that we have no knowledge regarding the long-term affects of the 'tuning' that these third party companies have done.
We gotta realize that most battery's are using the same cell or the same knock-off cell, and we can't really expect to much of an increase in mAh in this battery form-factor.
Installation Issues:
A lot of these battery's will need to be modified to fit our phones in one way or another as they're meant for the EVO 4G/Incredible/TP2/MyTouch3gSlide/CDMAHero.. Even the ones that are labeled as "G2 Compatible" might not be as a lot of the 'higher capacity' cells have identical dimensions.
Removing the Wrapper around the battery might assist with door bulge
If you feel like you have to aggressively 'wedge' the battery in then you might want to remove/modify the little nub's at the bottom of the battery near the contacts using nail clippers/dremel/knife. Otherwise you run the risk of damaging the cell-side charging contacts.
Some of the hardcore guys in here have sanded down the battery to have a good fit
The 'fit' differs from phone to phone depending both on the dimensions of each specific battery (not the actual brand or company, but each individual battery seems to be a little bit different) and the G2 Door.
If you leave the door bulging indefinitely it might damage the door in some way, it's recommended that you remove the door and just use a case if it's a major problem for you.
Tips:
- After installing the new battery, remember to reset the battery calibration through your recovery. This affects how many times you feel the need to "cycle it through" before achieving optimal battery life.
- Don't believe the temperature sensor on 3rd Party batteries
- Individual "Before and After" stories are cool, but not that useful considering all the variables involved with the hardware, the radio & signal, the software, and the human being (placebo affect). Aggregating all the data together does give us some picture of whats going on.
- The best tell for battery quality is the weight of the battery compared to your stock one, although this is not a guaranteed method.
Conclusion
After reading through as many threads as I could find regarding this topic, It seems that the CHICHITEC batteries have come to be the most popular across all these HTC phones. While the 1500mAh HTC EVO battery seems like the best deal with the most consistent power output.
The average perceived benefit using these batteries seems to be between 30-20%.

Thanks, this really is usefull and spares us who are still trying to figure out wich battery they want, alot of time!

For CHICHITEC 1800mAh battery, is it safe to shave off the piece allowing the battery to be a perfect fit? Such as trying to use a nail clipper and clip it off.

All I wanted to do was add my experience. I went out on a limb and bought the 2000mAh batteries from Galilio.
I took the wrapper off and trimmed the tabs and have been using them for about 3 months now.
My battery door does have a slight bulge to it but I can live with it.
The other day I decided to go back to my factory battery because I now have a charger by my bed, one in my truck and one at work. I have to say, I am spoiled now. My G2 is loaded up and running like crazy and my factory battery lasted like 2 hours where my Galilio battery goes for about 9 to 10 hours.
I text ALOT and facebook runs all day, I use the navigation on a daily basis and play tons of games.
Hope my 2 cents helped.

sweet i am still breaking the battery in hopefully its good as urs, btw what rom are you running?

I'm thinking about getting Mugen 1800mAH, but people are having mixed results. Maybe one day we'll get HTC made OEM battery.

CM 6.1.1 I absolutely love it. Tried the CM 7 but don't like it yet.

im on 10 hours of uncharge, so far its been light use, uncluding 1 hour and 30 min of GPS some texting, surfing and HTC updates

Thanks for compiling this info. I've had greatly improved life with the 1800mAh Mugen, but wasn't aware of the inconsistency some people are seeing.

I would say that the Mugen 1800 performs like a 1400 is an exaggeration.

Please run the same tests on the stock HTC 1300 mAh battery for reference.

Inspire 4G Batteries..

Thought I would start a battery thread just to see what everyone thinks. I have noticed the battery is 1230 mah and thats a little small for my taste. I have heard nothing bad about battery life, but thought I would start this thread to throw some options out there on where to buy hi-cap batteries. Also if anyone has experience with a site or certain make of battery, that is made for this phone POST IT UP. I haven't really been able to find anything.....

You haven't heard anything bad about the battery? I have heard a whole bunch of bad things about the battery. I have also heard a whole bunch of decent things about the battery which leads me - and I'm sure many other android users - to believe that with SMART management and usage, there is no reason the battery shouldn't last one day.
If there was a proven extended battery greater than 1300mah on the market right now, I would have had one ordered and delivered to my doorstep already. However, because of the hardware design, this may prove difficult for manufacturers.
My plan is to get the phone, set it up, possibly root - and then evaluate if the battery is adequate - as many had said it is. If it is REALLY bad, I mean frustrating, leaving me stranded in a bad part of town with no cell phone... then I will return it.

Thats kind of what I had planned as well. I may also put a rom on it if they start coming out soon enough, because they have obviously shown to drastically improve battery on many many devices. BTW did find a couple batteries on ebay, up to 1600mah but obviously there is no way to tell if they are worth a dang or not.

They're not worth a dang from what I've read. Crap manufacturers label batteries as they'd like - good luck proving them wrong.
I'm looking out for a legitimate battery, not from ebay, that is over 1300mah. Will post if said battery is found.

I saw a review of the seidio "extended" capacity battery for the dhd and results were not very good. The battery is listed as a 1600mah, but it's true capacity was only about 85% of what it was rated. That percentage fluctuated as well and was some times as low as 70%. The HTC batteries while only being 1230mah were close to 95% of it's rated. So it seems that the stock batteries are the best choice.

Looks like I may be purchasing a stock battery, and a car charger.

well, I've read that the desire and inspire are basically the same phone, if that is the case than I know, personally, 4 people who own this battery and have said it adds about 2 hours of life with moderate to heavy usage.

I think you just pay them... it will convert US to pounds.
I ordered a pair of jeans from France this year and you paid as you would anything else... it just converts the euro into US and thats what it takes from your bank.

I would invest in extra chargers. I picked up an inspire today and that battery door is almost impossible to get off. It would be an act in frustration to try to change that battery even once! From what I have seen the battery is holding up pretty well. I crushed the phone for a few hours and downloaded about 20 apps on wifi. The level dropped of course but it held up better than my Nexus one is holding up these days.

^ That is one option I've used with good success. And the extrernal battery is just a USB connection so I can use it for lots of stuff. It recharges the internal battery at the same time, an added bonus.

I am thinking about switching to Inspire from HD2. Can anyone confirm that the Inspire 4g uses same batteries as HD2?

Do where can we buy the dhd batteries from?

I ordered a spare from an AT&T corporate store today. The receipt lists it as 1400mah. I assume it's going to be the stock 1230 though. We shall see in a few days.

Your best bet would be mugen 1300mah battery. That's the one I am using and last 1-1.5hours more than stock.

I just read the whole intire (every single freaking word) thread about official batterys in the accessory thread,and it delivered no answers. It seems as if the people in that thread would rather argue,than help the movement and find the best alternitive. Does anyone know of a battery for the inspire,that would deliver better battery life?

I have tried this aswell. Could not find answers ... being a heavy user , I did the next best thing. I Installed a ROM which gave me a good battery life. I am currently using Gingerbeast and I am pretty happy that it gets me through most of the day. This is 'my' solution until a decent battery with bigger capacity comes in.

Yeah i def plan on rooting and flashing whatever sense rom there are,that was gonna be my next step after i receive the phone tomorrow. I know with my old cappy there was a rom that conerved battery and boosted my battery life by atleast 3 or 4 hours a day. Amazing what the devs can do,but me,im a VERY HEAVY user but im only using my phone from around 5pm until maybe 2am because of my work shcedule. I just hope a better battery comes out. My whole past week consisted of 2384720589 million google searches and reading through 84573809 million threads to see if i should get an atrix,or an inspire and i chose the inspire. After all the android phones ive had,i want this one to be something that makes me wanna stick with it for my 2 years. ehh,we'll see

If you guys want good battery. I have my wife's inspire running inspired saga rom using the 12.35..... radio and using juice defender and she avgs 1d 4hrs on one single charge with the stock battery. Just thought i would share that. Also it is 100% stable.

Yeah, I am using juice defender as well. Not a fan of the fact that it toggles my data on a schedule ... but hey... it sure helps.

Yeah , some replacement battery is sure to come along ! Right now, you are probably better off flashing the right rom and working with it a little bit. I am sure when a genuine/ good quality high capacity battery comes in.... we will surely see the "OMG...Inspire's new battery can power my house" threads

The thing is, due to the design of the phone, there's not a lot of wiggle room to make a larger capacity battery.
A larger capacity battery has to be physically bigger in size. That works for phones that have the battery on the back side of the phone, because you can provide a modified battery cover to accommodate it.
The inspire, not so easy, as it slips inside the phone, from the side, so the only dimension that could be enlarged is the length.
A little more length *might* be possible, but it would be a tight squeeze, and probably wouldn't result in that much of an increase in capacity.
Better to try to focus on optimizing the phone with the existing battery, by way of roms and such, as mentioned, instead of holding your breath waiting for some dramatic advance in battery technology to appear that allows more juice to be stored in the same physical space.

is the evo's battery thicker or wider? i know the evo's wont work but i know it cant be too much bigger

The only possible way to get a larger capacity battery would be very tricky. It would require a battery door that had power posts to contact the battery contacts, while maintaining connection of the required contact points on the battery door. Sounds simple enough, but trust me, the development and production costs of said battery would prolly far outweigh potential profit. As a result, I don't think we'll ever see one those type batteries. I suggest following the advice of the other members previous replies, as their insight is that of a Jedi Master. More like, we are Droidi, they are Droidi Masters. Lmao

Why couldn't they just stick a battery pack that attaches to the back of the phone, and have a wire with a little adapter that goes into the normal battery spot. Make a rubber case to go around it, and hot dang, ta-da you're done.
For me, I use an iSound 8000mAh battery that's about 2 pounds, and cost me all of $80. A bit steap, but being able to fully charge my phone a handful of times on the go makes it worth it to me.

Sheesh, you use your phone *that* much? I mean, how about a couple more stock batteries and an external charging dock?
Two pounds is a bit more than most people want to lug around.
The type of setup you suggest sounds like the rigs we used to use to power our portable DAT recorders to tape Grateful Dead shows.
Whatever floats yer boat, but that starts to remove the portability of the device.

Hooray for deadheads. Anyway, I'm tired of seeing these threads pop up and stick on the first page of the forums in the DHD and Inspire sections. If you have seen how the battery goes in there, there is no way to stick a new one in there without some serious R&D. There have been a number of efforts on xda attempting to dispel the myths that state a battery that's identical in physical volume to the stock battery can hold any more juice. That's a boldfaced lie until something better and more cost-effective than Li-Po comes along. Even the giant batteries that say "3500 mah" usually have 2,xxx mah. I used to not care about the latter because I could make my Wizard, Hermes, Kaiser, and Rhodium last for two or three days on a charge for $10 on ebay. I testmed my "2800 mah" batteries and they were anywhere between 1940 and 2300 mAH, but it was still worth it to me until I got my Rhodium and figured out HTC made an official 2,150 mah battery and door that I tested and sent to xda member "Dougie" to test with a more accurate method than mine and it tested at exactly 2,150 mAH. Stock HTC batteries usually test around 95% of their rated capacity.
I don't want to write a 5 paragraph essay on the chemistry of Li-Po batteries, so please take it from a battery life freak that a larger battery in this phone is impossible. The best they'll be able to do is things like the iPhone's Mophie Juice Pack. My solution is that of the previous poster in that I bought an 8,800 mAH battery that weighs a couple of pounds that I take with me when I go camping for a week or two and use the phone for satnav with satellite imagery. It takes a while to load on GPRS, but who cares when I've got 10,000 mAH of juice? For outdoor sessions greater than 14 days I have a few photovoltaic panels and a waterproof project box to get it to 5V. It'll charge the big battery in about 4 days of direct sunlight as long as I don't uberkill the battery and have to 'shock' it back to life.

I've seen that type of setup work on some equipment where I work too. Except professionally done so that its housed right and doubled nicely as protection for the devices.
As for the external battery, it isn't much in weight for me, but I tend to go everywhere with some kinda backpack on, or a laptop bag, so to me its just there. Plus when I'm at work, all the outlets are in areas that I'd have to either duck under my desk to mess with my phone, or buy longer USB cables. I just go with the battery, more so since I can use it when out of the office and there isn't any outlets around. Same with like on a plane, at an airport, etc where outlets are crowded or not as enjoyable to work with. Plus the case I have the phone in requires I use a knife to get the stupid thing open, which means changing batteries is ten times the work as plugging in a USB cable.

if you think about it. a few years ago everyone probally thought it was "impossible" to squeeze so much into a phone and make them as thin as they are today. but as technology evolved the manafactuers have put alot into the thinnest phones on the market. so i believe that within time they will make a battery for us thats the same size and has more mAH. just my opinion,others may argue but i mean,when dulecore proccessers came out im sure no one thought we would never see a phone with all that squeezed into a cell phone. never doubt the possibilities

Oh I have no doubt the technology will improve, more juice in a smaller space, kinda like hard drives... Somehow they always manage to get more into the same space.
Just not in time to be an alternative after-market battery solution for this particular phone.

i read through the whole entire other battery thread,and it did not answer my question. it was filled with arguing abd people trying to prove there "intelligence". i just wanted a "no,no decent after market battery yet" or and kick towards the rite step which i recieved. no need to post in the thread no more with the complaining over "another battery thread". xda is built on the threads and each user receiving help so that maybe they can help someone else out. damn

No,people gave bad reviews of battery and argued the fact if there will be a better battery. My question was has anyone found one that boosted it at all. Any,whatsoever. I didn't post in that thread because I didn't want one of those rude asses to jump down my throat. So as I have the right,I started my own thread.

So then to answer your question. I have not read, heard or seen a battery that will do any better than the original. Best bet at this point in time is to by a spare or carry a charger with you.
I have experience much better battery life with custom ROMs vs the stock ROM.

Hi, I'm planning on purchasing an HTC Sensation now that I've gotten rid of my iPhone 4.
I do have some issues regarding the purchase. I've seen threads commenting on dust collecting under screen and a poor battery life. Are these issues common on the phone? And if they are, is it possible to clean out the screen when the issue occurs? I've heard about a 1900mAh battery so I guess that's a better fix for the battery.
I'm on a T-Mobile family plan with no data plan. If I purchase an unlocked Sensation, will T-Mobile automatically add a data plan to my line? This happened to me when I used my iPhone 4 I got as a present on my AT&T line.

Not had my phone for all that long so I can't comment on the dust under the screen issue yet. But for battery life there are a few things that can be done, if you root your phone you can get SetCPU and underclock your phone when it's screen is off to extend the battery life or get Juice Defender, which disables wifi and data when the screen is off but turns them back on every 15 minutes to allow it to sync and will then turn them off again to save battery.
But even without a rooted phone, although the battery life certainly isn't good it will just about get you through a long day. But obviously you can also get a 19000mAh battery or even a further extended one as well as an external battery that can charge your phone up providing you don't mind carrying one around.

Also, can the Sensation play flash videos natively? I've heard some mixed claims regarding that.

I have had the Sensation for quite some time now and I don't have one spec of dust under my screen. And battery life is good. It last me through the day but I bought the Anker 1900mAh battery because it is so cheap and so amazing lol.
I would recommend the Sensation to anyone.

I purchased the Anker 10,000 maH battery. I had to...... I use my phone all day long. So I really don't turn on my main computer everyday. Especially since I installed a terminal emulator on my Sense. Now I can correct code, and scripts on the fly. I can re-charge my phone 5 times with this brick. Fits in my shirt pocket, and it takes an hour from 10% battery to 100%. Not bad.....

Dust under the screen is a common issue, but it's only a lot more common than it should be - the number of Sensations affected is still a very low amount. The safest way to take care of it is to go through T-Mo or HTC and they'll clean it out. Trying to do it yourself will definitely void the warranty cause you'll have to dismantle the phone.
Battery can be terrible, but a chichitec, anker, or mugen 1900mAh battery along with a good rom/kernel/clockspeed combo fixes that. I'm on Android HD 3.x gingerbread with the stock kernel, clocked at 1.5Ghz when the screen is on, 768Mhz when it's off, heavy user and I can make it through the day. The other thing to consider is how you use the phone. The Super-LCD looks crazy crisp, and it is, sunlight visibility is great and color reproduction is nice - although it's no SAMOLED. Here's the problem though, it's a mega power drainer. If you listen to a lot of music on your phone or maybe stream Pandora comedy, you shouldn't have any issues. If you're an all-day facebooker or constantly texting/emailing, that screen will destroy your battery and I couldn't recommend the phone, as much as I love it Don't get me wrong, you could do it, but you'll probably need a spare battery or a charger with you.
With the 1900mAh battery, I can have the screen on constantly and texting/emailing/browsing for about 3 hours straight. If I keep the screen on and play games, 2 and a half hours. Not much difference even though one is a lot more intensive than the other. The S-LCD panel is a huge battery drain.

I haven't had any problems with dust under the screen.
Battery life great for the amount of time i use the phone everyday (screenshot attached).
If you're up for it i'd suggest you flash a custom ROM to use the full potential of the phone. Personally i like Android Revolution HD, but it's all down to personal preference. Try a few different ones and use what you like the most.

I'm thinking of an upgrade (from HTC Vision & iPhone 4S) and looking at Sensation as an option and I've got a few questions regarding that.
My main concern is it not to late to jump to a Sensation? are there good developers still around? I remember RMK jumped from G2 to sensation, and he's still here, how about others? Any rumors or plans to abandon Sensation? I'd imagine alot of them getting the new GN, I can't really be bothered, rather have an option between Sense and AOSP.
My other question would be is the hardware acceleration fully functional on current ICS roms?

I'm running RVHD 5.02 and its still running at 1.2 GHz.. I haven't figured out why. I'm running super tuner, and setcpu. It's running quick, but not at the advertised speed.

It's "there" but it doesn't run very well. Barely feels like its on. Just wait a month or two, and stable ICS will be released.

Despite having GNexus I would recommend the HTC Sensation. Had it before gnex and it's very good phone. Had two small issues :
1) battery under heavy use drain fast - bigger battery recommended.
2) random ringtone/notification change (this could be related to 2.08.401.1 ROM, which isn't officially released, but is a test ROM).
Other than this is VERY good device and won't let you down.

Disappointing? Nothing . Only issue I had, was the "volume ghost", but after flashing 4.0.2 all OK. It's different device and as I was hard addict to Sense, I'm surprised how quickly get used to GNex. Love it

i have no dust on my screen yet. i buy it 3 month ago.

The dust problem is annoying, but it's no problem to get a new phone when the first one has dust under the screen. The Akku is okey for one day full use, when you load it every night. When you need better akku there are good ones with 1900mAh, on Amazon Germany for example the one by Anker.

Regarding the data plan. I currently have a family plan with no data. When I purchase my Sensation on ebay or any other auction site, and then use my T-Mobile sim, will I automatically be added a data plan?

Battery suggestions?

I'm planning on buying a higher capacity batter for my DHD: any suggestions? I don't want a bulky external battery, the thing is big enough as it is.
I found this on eBay, but it seems waaay too good to be true.. Is there a risk of it exploding in my pocket, or just of it being really crappy?
Are the Mugen (1500mAh) or Andida (1800mAh) batteries any good?

From what I've read, the Mugen batteries are good but they don't make too much of a difference in normal usage. I really doubt there can be such a huge jump in mAh without any increase in size as the two batteries suggest. 1500 mAh seems plausible, but 1800 mAh seems very unlikely. The actual capacity will be much less than advertised, hence the not so great performance improvement.
In my opinion, (if you haven't done this already) you'd be better off rooting your phone and installing one of many custom ROMs here which give excellent battery life over the stock ROM. I get around 18 hours of moderate to heavy usage and more than a day of light usage. Also, I keep 2 standard batteries. The battery life offered by that combination is much better than a single higher capacity battery, and the HTC battery costs a lot less too.

Yeah I tried RCMix3d Runny 4.0 and found the battery life quite bad too. Even with killersloth's UV scripts and all that. That and average GPS performance (~6 satellites usually, weak lock) were the only problems with it. The RCTweaks are awesome.
For the best battery life and fast GPS lock (~10 satellites strong lock), from my trials, I've found that these ROMs give the best performance -

If you're going to buy a replacement battery, get an OEM one (0% improvement over stock ) or get the Mugen 1500mAh - that may just get you through to the end of the day.
Definitely, install a different ROM, and look at the clockspeed options you're given (or just install OC/UV Beater) You can overclock or underclock, and also play with undervolting, which improves efficiency.
Also consider network management, screen brightness etc -an easy way to do so is to use Juice Defender, though the purists say all their options can be effected manually.

Mugen's 1500 battery shows about 15% better capacity than my almost year-old stock one (1270 vs. 1095mAh, as measured by the battery monitor widget, after its first 4 cycles). Does not look quite like 1500mAh, but I guess the stock one never did register 1320mAh in that measurement either - it's either a systematic error, residual change or something...

If you are using a case (for example an otterbox or a case from casemate) then this is your best option!
The original htc sensation battery has 1520mAh and costs a lot less than the one from mugen. And i'd say you can trust original htc batteries more than anything found on ebay

I have an (china) battery from ebay with 1600 mAh. the battery life on our phones is really really poor. I heavily used my phone of the day an i only get a battery life from 6-8 hours, and thats really bad. So i found that no battery is even better than the original.

Though Mugen is not a perfect solution, it is better than stock batt.
Don't just go for price when you are buying batteries too, especially those dirt cheap china batteries. I bought a few before, it bloated up after a few months of usage.

Due to DHD specialty, there can be used batteries with the capacity not more than 1500 mAh. All the numbers more than 1500 are either lie, or mean that battery is thicker than DHD body can support.

That's why you've got three options:
1) use multiple batteries (not really an option)
2) use an external charger (better, but i don't want to carry around more than the phone)
3) if you use a protective case then get a sensation battery....mines got 1900mAh and fits nicely into my DHD

You can also use a secour / external battery .You can reload four or five time you phon whit.

I have one extra 1230mAh battery & an Energizer XP2000 Portable charger. But to my opinion, adjusting your phone-charging habits makes all the difference. Anticipate with respect to your day's routine.
Though, I'm looking forward for the GSM version of Motorola Droid Maxx, or for any other that rivals its battery capacity.
p.s. charging extra batteries individual would be nice. I should try modding some usb cable to connect directly to the battery contacts, hmmmm...
