I'm not sure if this post is allowed, but I'll try anyways.
I will give some slight background here, just to prove I'm not a complete moron.
So, I started with the Nokia 6131 unlocked in 2003 or 2004. Since then, I've owned countless Nokia phones. Always getting the next best thing from them. Never had issues until my n97 escapade. I'm sure everyone know how fun that was. So I went to the iPhone, but got real bored with the operating system. Took 3 months to jump ship from the iPhone. Now, this is my first android phone and I am excited as hell, but I have no clue what I need!
I've downloaded some novelty type apps (foxnews, espn, star map, etc.) but I'm not sure what utility apps I need.
I've already downloaded prolaunch beta and home switcher. What else is there? I know there are some battery saver apps, plus some task killer apps, but i'm not sure which are the best, or i'm not sure what else I need to make sure my phone runs top notch.
Please, help a first timer feel what it is like to have a completely amazing and open phone!
lol ofc its allowed. I'd post it in the "Captivate Themes and Apps" division instead of general chat next time lol. Im in the same boat as this guy. What can everyone recommend getting from the get go?
oh yea, there is a board for that huh?
Could this be moved, or deleted? I forgot about that.
i havnt seen any admins around for that yet. Might as well keep this posted here. When an admin drops by then can move this to the right place .
I'm going to place around with the stock phone for a little while, and then I'd heading into the marketplace and installing LauncherPro and QuckDesk.
I like the stock one, but the launcher pro just seems a bit cleaner to me. Also, it is less laggy (but that could be because i have far less widgets open now.)
I need something to help optimize battery life. What is a good android battery saver program?
Please add to this, wanted to make a list of fixes / changes and what's not fixed. This was compiled by a few of us, already (for example, ncbenhk who I am referencing, here).
- Timezone issue is fixed.
- Game install issues (ie. Angry Birds) is fixed. Mapping issue seems to be resolved.
- Angry Birds does NOT work, however. Video is blank. We know how to fix that, however.
- Speakers are now in stereo.
- Camera is MUCH improved.
- WiFi issues may be corrected. They definitely changed the driver.
- Some overall UI changes - ie some of the dialog boxes and there's a sleep at shutdown option, now.
- Games are still 90 degrees off.
- There is a new App Store (Handango). I personally don't plan on using it, however.
- There is still no official Flash support. Again, we have a fix for that.
- Holding the home button now longer shows most recent applications.
Please add more stuff, as you find them!
Do not use the viewsonic update
this update is pathetic, nothing less than a failed attempt to fix the device. the tablet is slow and non responsive with this update applied. i am going back to the last full rothnic build as i have robeets last build on the other and my build on my third gtab. view sonic you have dropped the ball again. worthless update, what it breaks that already worked is not worth a camera fix, as wifi is not fixed, nor is the sdcard issue.
UPDATE: the kernal is still the same stock crap kernal, they fixed nothing inside the kernal. tells me they do not know how. they modified android is what the have in this update nothing else and by doing so made the device less functional fcfcfcfc.
There's now a "Downloaded Applications" tab under the Manage Applications tab that wasn't there before.
And turning on USB Storage now pops up a dialog box instead of a full-screen window.

So you still have wifi errors or was it something else. I think I might merge the changes into zpad and see how it works.
They removed all languages from Android except for British and American English.

How long until we see another Zpad version? That's the ROM I have been using with the most success recently, would love to see another update .
The game G-sensor issue, don't really know how this can be fixed.
I saw some of the cheap China Made that does not have this issue, but the g-sensor really only have 270 degree...
As I explained to Rothnic, in our Zpad group, we have a experience user who nod the game App's x-y axis ( by swithing them), we have about 15 games that is working properly now.
we think it's more about how the game define the thress axis as it seems phone and tablet define this thress axis differently.

+1+1+1!!! I feel so let down by this update! I was led 2. Believe great things were being done with this one and only to be severely disappointed. Were my expectations too high?!?! I'm not even upset about flash. I was told upfront where that stands. Device is still sluggish. Too frustrated 2 try anything else. And what is this app garbage?!?! Weren't we told all along it would be pocketgear?!?! And he11...I can create my own favorites for Facebook & handango. What the hell?!?! Do you really call a shortcut to a webpage an app?!?! Who are they trying to fool here?!?!

jm knows this, I think he is being rhetorical in that the update is a tad lame and the paid app market process truly is pathetic and will cause returns, just for this lame effort.
For rooters, the device is already fairly solid (sans common sense about g-sensor).
Still, for non rooters:
1. UI is a pathetic slow mess and is an anchor to the experience of using it
2. No Angry Birds (it IS huge, so there you go)
3. No Flash (still on the box, apparently)
4. Craptastic app portal and paid app process
5. G Sensor. This ALONE makes the device broken.
How ironic is this. Unpaid for their effort hobbyists (kings here) have turned the device into a solid piece of gear with Flash, Nvidia fix, minimal Tap UI and market.
The paid folks..... not so much Irony sometimes is killa
I love my G and like how is is set up, but to save at least $100, I may just return it and troll for a refurb. Thing is, I luv the device and mods:
1. Best performing Flash of any current Android device: CHECK!
2. Market: CHECK!
3. Great sound quality: CHECK!
4. Smooth browser: CHECK!
5. Comics & PDFs, regardless of size, smooth: CHECK!
6. PSX4Droid smooth for 3D games: Using PSX4Droid 1.5, CHECK! (1.7 sucks)
7. Capcom 1 & 2 and ALL Neo Geo games playing super fine: CHECK (TigerMAME)
Archos 101 has a 3630 and half the ram of the Droid X. Droid X does not play Flash as smoothly, nor the games in items 6 & 7 anywhere near as well.
Gtablet rocks- warts and all Looking forward to TnT Lite 2.0
Rushless,
I agree, I am buying 2 for Christmas. 1 for me and 1 to replace wifey's laptop. I am going into this knowing they need to be rooted and modded. Once that's done, it's a great tablet.

Very rhetorical. My fear is that it will be EOL long before it should be without large public acceptance. And at this point I don't see it being widely accepted.
The camera is definitely improved - didn't anyone test this but me? The original firmware was AWFUL - the thing was crippled. I'm not saying that this records in HiDef now, but at least it's usable.
As for all the hate on this new firmware, I don't get it. Yes, I know that the game accelerometer issue is still a problem, but they did fix some things. From a modding standpoint, I think it was a good first update and overall I'm happy with it.
TnT UI is slow. So what, I'm ripping it out, anyway.
Horrible App Store. So what, I have the real Marketplace.
No Flash. Sure we do, it's just not official but it works.
Angry Birds doesn't work. It will in TnT Lite 2.00, just relax. I've already built it out and I'm testing it, now.

Not certain - I did get a Contacts apk from another user here, but I haven't tested it farther than just making sure it ran.
Btw, TnT Lite 2.00 is released.

ray: Smart move
jm: Ditto, but think of the wealth of refurbs!
Roeb: I think people logically thought they would fix obvious things like the Gsensor and apply the Nvidia fix, just to name two and the app market.... what VS did (as proxy from their OEM devs) defies any common business sense.
This device would sell HUGE if the device shipped with TnT Lite 1.03 and updated with 2.0. THIS DEVICE DESERVES BETTER and consumers are going to miss out on a great value. They will return it without knowing what it really can do.
I hope that VS appreciates the amount of CS calls and returns will be staggering and create some very bad blood with Kmart/Sears, Office Depot and Staples purchasing departments. This product may result in VS losing some future bids and shelf space. That is what I would direct and I am a materials manager for a large company.
I am a geek, but business is the stuff
Seriously, VS should pay you folks and use your package. Instant consumer goodwill and a LOT less product return grief. So simple it hurts.
added: Sorry being too hard on VS, but their approach to fixing the rom package is not logical for a device pushing on Black Friday. The lack of a web download option is pure Greek tragedy and stubborn (or naive?).

Good points and I totally agree. My only point before is that, as users in this XDA forum, the fixes are pretty good with the exception of the g-sensor bug that remains. But, for consumers who will be purchasing this device this week and into the holiday season, it's just not enough. VS management should be flogged with the bone-headed decisions that they've been making, so far.
I actually called CS to tell them that we had already grabbed the OTA update and posted it. From my dealings with them, I know that they are frustrated trying to support this thing and I don't blame them -- I blame their B&D team and the management in that area.
I am concerned that VS kills this thing off because of massive returns, but I think that, eventually, the software will catch up and make this device even better than it already is. If not from Viewsonic, then at least the zPad firmware updates will.
By the time I got 3116 downloaded, several other people had made varying comments so I didn't really know what to expect.
Here are my observations:
1. Update was flawless and no instability afterward that can see.
2. I wouldn't say it seems "fast" -- but I definitely would call it smoother and more polished.
3. I neither like nor dislike the TnT launcher, but I do appreciate that they put the Android-like option in there. I'll use that more than the stock launcher.
4. They should have put flash in. From a public perspective, it was hugely necessary. And it it was an Adobe holdup, they need to get their PR flacks on line making sure people know they tried!
5. All the apps I have added since the update seem to have loaded and are working fine.
6. I'm still exploring, but I put an SD card in /sdcard2 with a couple of albums on it. Told the music app to start -- it said it was searching -- it found my music and played!!! That was nice. Now will have to test photos, videos, etc.
7. It just runs and that helps!
Summary: Given what's in and not in the update, I suspect this is an effort by the TapNTap people to get out from under the whole situation. It looks to my eye (and I have done a fair amount of programming) like when the furor over the interface started, someone started working real hard to make TapNTap work well. I do agree with somebody that while I am not happy with what came in the package, I believe it probably will be enough to satisfy casual, non-tech users if the VS marketing people can get the word out and generate some interest.
I'd give it a thumbs up with the proviso that somebody better bring some meat and potatoes before long to go with the appetizer!
Rev
I agree.
The stock Android-like launcher is nice. The speed and stability is much improved. We are spoiled with the speed-fix that all the aftermarket roms have in them. I have used TNT lite and Vegan since I got the tab new. I have installed this update and have been usingit for the afternoon. I think it is nice and this can be a mainstream tablet now. The only thing it needs is the flash, which will be forthcoming.
I was one of the people that was very down on the stock firmware. This device is now able to compete head to head with any other android tablet and can go head to head against the Ipad. Once flash is added, this is much better than the Ipad.
It seemed very usable. Pretty nice for people who want something that just works rather than learning how to use Android. The only instability I experienced was some incompatibility with my Exchange mail crashing the mail app every time.
upgrade
Is this the so called 12 19 update??
2insane,
Yes, apparently Roebeet caught it early and D/Led it and posted the link for others who wanted to try it.
There are quite a few posts explaining people's opinions about it.
Rev
A vast improvement.
I only used the new update shortly after install today. I believe for most people purchasing the tablet the update will be enough to keep them from returning the product. It's not going to show the potential of the Tegra processor, but the unit is usable.
The one glaring issue I think is when changing orientation. The gpad is slow and unsure, both the iPad and Samsung tab are instant.
Even though it is a vast improvement it should be more. How is that a few developers on this site can come up with much better software with limited resources and access to key information than the company selling the product?
I had given up my tablet and found the update looking for the stock flash to return the unit. It was fun tweaking it, but I was using time that I really couldn't spare trying to get it work. Not sure I would have followed through with returning yet.
I did a complete wipe and reformat of the system and partitioned the sd card. Installed the update then installed VEGAn Beta 3 without wiping and all I can say fantastic.. Not sure what changed, but VEGAn runs even better now. I have been using my tab for about 6 hours now trying to get it to act up, so far no problems. I have not attempted the Adobe Flash install. Flash would be nice to have, but really is not all that important for my use.
Some of you like numbers, here are some Quadrant scores. Viewsonic Gtablet 2538. My Samsung Galaxy Tab 976. I can assure you that in daily use the speed difference is not as dramatic as the numbers suggest.
To those of you who are frustrated and thinking of returning the unit, you might give it a few more tries. At least give the update a try, it won't run at full potential, but the update appears to make it a very usable device. Even with just the Viewsonic update I have trouble believing that this is the same piece of junk I brought home 7 days ago.
I believe I have a keeper now thanks to the people on this site that share there work and knowledge, with a little credit due to Viewsonic.
I know, not another best rom thread. But I've been reading as many of these threads as I could and there still seems to be some disagreements among power users.
Right now, TnT lite vs Vegan 5.1. Am I missing something else here that is more stable?
I'm not sure there's THAT much difference in stability between these ROMs. Of course Vegan is heading toward a Gingerbread release which might be worth picking up soon.
A lot of it comes down to personal taste, as well as some particular things being a bit easier on one ROM or another.
I don't think you can go that wrong with either of them. That all said, I did vote for Vegan since "for me" it has worked best.
So someone actually picked the "idiot" option on the poll. Very classy. I will admit that the OP should not have even given the option to choose that since the "true idiots" will always show up and be true to their nature.
I enjoy Vegan 5.1 here.

To be fair, I was 1 of 2 who voted the idiot thing. Since I haven't got a g tab, not yet anyway. I'm still feeling the water before I decide to jump in. I am 70% sure I will get one. But once I get it, I want the most stable rom. You guys are nothing to me but guinea pigs.
Edit.
I'm the less techie between my boyfriend and I. I'm not going to be asking for his help at all, so I don't want to have to deal with apps crashing or infinite boot-up loops or such problems.
With vegan, do I still need to apply the fix for force closing?
Vegan has worked great for me with no additional "fixes". I use it to watch movies, surf the net, play games, and as an ereader. Probably 4 hours avg per day on it, and Vegan has given me no issues. I tried TnT lite as well, and while I saw no problems, I just preferred the feel of Vegan.
Vegan is a good Rom I used it for a while. I have been impressed with calkulins gtab rom. Very fast and nice tweaks.
I refuse to use Vegan simply because my serious disdain for Vegans in general. Petty? Sure. I don't care
So.. I use TnT Lite, and have for a while now. Quite stable, no major issues, the 5.0 upgrade was a bit of a pain but its been rock solid so far. Does everything I need it do. (To be fair, Vegan does too)
Though with the Gingerbread on Vegan soon, I may switch over to check it out..
May I ask what your disdain of vegan is about?
Ive run the gambit of roms on my gtab over the past two nights.
Vegan gingerbread + updated gb kernal rules them all.
And its experimental! This rom is headed in the right direction.

Based on these comments I recommend a ipad.
my g tab will get here tuesday, im in school and going to use it primarily to read textbooks on pdf and full screen jpeg scans of the books. it was either spend $400 this semester on books or get a gtab and magic wand scanner, figured id have more fun with the gtab than a book i wont have to buy books in future semesters plus i can use the internet for research and all that
so would you guys think the vegan gingerbread rom would be good enough for this, i know its still experimental. plus id like to be able to surf the net and view flash videos on a few different sites besides youtube.
There are a handful of little things holding back vegan GB but no show stoppers.
The gb keyboard has some issues (missing #s, no type ahead)
Market can be painful at times. There are a couple apps (like mvideoplayer pro) that I can't purchase and my apps comes up blank without a creative work around.
I believe the kernel is missing video hardware acceleration or there's something buggy with gfx/gl. Even with this issue it still scores a 2000 quadrant.
Latest version of Google maps FCs but 5.0.0 works fine.
For something that isn't even beta yet it is super nice and does an awesome job demonstrating the tablet capabilities of GB. Very tablet friendly.

Hello everyone. I have recently purchased an HTC One S, and I have found this issues about it, let´s see of they have some solution:
-Very few free Ram. After starting it, I only have 200 MB free Ram. Is it normal?, Can it be increased?, Am I going to have problems running some ram demanding games?, For the moment, I have run shadow gun and it works flawlessly. It is strange mostly when you see that a Desire has the same amount of free ram, having only a total of 512 MB, One S has 1 GB, where did it go?, other phones with 1 GB of Ram have 400 MB or more free ram, like xperia S, Galaxy S and so on... Is it a problem of ICS, Sense, or both?....
-The launcher keeps reloading for some seconds after running some big apps, like games, internet heavy pages and things like that. It seems that the system runs out of memory, maybe because of the first issue, and unloads the sense launcher. Can it be avoid someway, without having to root or to install custom roms?
-Calendar: let´s see if I can explain this one. We have a setting that marks the amount of minutes that we want the phone to notify us of an event in the calendar. Let´s say we have 15 minutes. Then If I create an event at 10:00 for instance, the phone will notify me at 9:45, ok?, the problem is about the postpone option. When I choose to postpone, it won´t notify me again. The problem is that the phone won´t notify you again when the real time of the event comes. The phone has a time to notify you again after having postponed of 15 minutes, so if you have the delay of the event set to 15 minutes, it would notify you 15 minutes later if you postpone it, but then the real time will be over, so it doesn´t notify you. The only way that it can notify you after postponing is to set the delay at 30 minutes or more, then if you pospone it, after 15 minutes it will advise you again.
This was different in other phones, and better from my point of view. In Diamond it was set to 5 minutes between postpones.. HD2 was 1 minute, and desire is 10 minutes. So, do you know an easy way to change this so I can be notified 5 minutes later after posponing an event?.
-Memory Android control behavior, I mean, multitasking is almost non-existent. You can go home from some apps, but sometimes the SO closes them without telling you anything, so when you go back to them, you don´t go to the point where you left it. For example, I open the manual of HTC One S in PDF, I start reading it, pass some pages, then go home and do some other tasks, when I come back to the manual, I am not taken to the last page I was in. The same with some games and other apps. Gladdly it does not seem to be happening with word or other apps that have an open and edited file, fortunatly....
Well, these are the main problems I see about the phone. The other things are great, apart from the micro arc oxidation problem that I see unacceptable, but this is another subject different from software ones..... It is a pity it has these issues, because the phone is the best one in the market right now, in my opinion, the camera is fast and great, the screen is britght and sharp....
Best regards.
Any ideas or help about any of these problems?.
Best regards.
O man, this post is really long. Lol. Ill bookmark it and read tomorrow - try to offer some help
Sent from my HTC One S using Tapatalk 2
maybe all that has to do with the small amount of memory available for the phone to use.
i too had only about 170Mb available ram with no apps running except a battery and the usual HTC sense. I was getting similar symptoms as you do, and i suspect that the phone may be closing your apps to allow htc sense to keep on running smoothly. I cannot find an answer to that though. i sold mine for various reasons
So referring to problems 1,2 and 4... that is normal and all due to the internal management of free ram. I read somewhere in the settings that 90mbyte is the ram the system should keep free. so basically you have 80 mb of free ram (starting from 170MB total free space which is normal) before the systems start to close apps in the background. Using ram hungry apps will fill this up fast and therefore close other apps or even close sense. I to think that the HOS is a little bit harsh on closing apps...
If you install one of the ICS Ports (Miui, CM9, AOKP) you have around 400 mb free ram. So basically it is Sense which is eating your space. And to answer your last question without rooting and using a custom rom there is nothing you can change about those things.
One X users have the same issues with multitasking, and HTC official answer is that they tweaked ICS memory management for a "good sense experience"...
So, it seems that despite being toned down visually and being incredibly improved, Sense 4.0 is still having the ethernal same issue of ressourse hog... =\
So as you all say, it is quite sure that the problem is with sense. They say that they do this in order to have a "good sense experience", but I don´t see a "good sense experience" to have th sense continously reloading, grrrrr.......
Anyway.... let´s hope they solve this with an update or something, maybe we should all write htc to make presure so they solve this, don´t you think?.
What can you tell about point 3?, did you experience it too?.
Best regards.
no multitasking on t-mo
See thread "where is multitasking". The problem is with sense. Non T-mo devices received update that fixed this. T-mobile device still have this problem and since it is up to the carrier, not HTC, we might get update in months
This issue with killing application in the background just minutes you were out of of it is insane. None of the tech review website caught this in their 5 pages reviews a month ago. People just now are finding these issues.
I am patiently waiting for CM9 Beta or official release to install it. I have used sense for a month now and it is a struggle, there are so many issues, including the one with patents for "association" where you open a link for a video and loads in a browser instead of the app, and is not just with videos.
Honestly if I knew there so many "little" issues I would hold my problem free Google Nexus One sacrificing only 3G vs 4G and lower processor speed.
Sense is not as productive as Stock Android.
So you mean that there is already an update for One series?, I don´t see any update download in the web page of HTC. Mine is orange, hope they will release it soon. This thing about apps closing and sense reloading is starting to anoy me. As you say, no review talked about this when they released them.
Another issue that anoys me a lot is that when you have a long queue of songs in the music player, it doesn´t remember the song you where playing after been several hours without using it. This didn´t happen to me in the whole lot of mobiles I had, diamond, hd2, and even old nokias......
This phone is asking for an update urgently, I am afraid..... I don´t say that I wouldn´t have bought it if I knew all this, but I would have thought it better....
Best regards.

Yes, people with non carrier branded phones reported updates on engadget.com. T-mobile, Orange, etc will get it months down the road. Me, not happy with this. The development community is asking for kernel code to fix a custom rom, like CM9 and fix these issues for good. I suggest, add HTC USA, HTC UK, HTC world on facebook and post a comment about kernel release code, update, etc. in a kindly manner. They do respond, at least to me. Email them thru HTCdev.com also.

Do you know the improvements that the update will have?, you say that multitasking would be fixed, what about the sense reloading problem?.
Do you know if the update will delete anything or it is safe to install it?.
Besst regards.

I have no idea how each wireless carrier will customize their version of the update. To my knowledge OTA updates for the last 2 1/2 years did not delete anything.
I am not developer or anyhting. I never installed a ROM etc, but I can't stand Sense and these carrier delays with OTA updates. I am coming from Google Nexus One -(HTC),purchased straight from google 2+ years ago, where updates were distributed months before the carriers got theirs if any. CM9 for ICS will get me closer to this pure android experience.

Hello again. I have just installed the update from orange, 1.78.75.5, and this is my first impresion:
-2 new apps, daily motion, that basically has videos and trailers, and TV, which I am not able to use because is only for orange clients, and I am a movistar user, using my sim car in an free orange one S.
-Some new animated backgorunds, very ugly in my humble opinion.
-More free RAM, not many, but some more, after restarting I have 231 MB, but after moving through the different desktops and loading the widgets for SMS, contacts, favorites, galery and so on... I have 187 Mb of RAM, when before I had about 160 MB of RAM.
-The reloading of sense is still happening after playing with shadow gun, and I am not taken to the last position where I left it if I come back to it. Anyway, I assume that this game is too big, almost 160 MB of RAM, so I can live with it, I guess the reloads will be less frequent now. I have tried blood and glory, another big game, and press home button didn´t reload the sense, so I guess it is OK for me.
-I am not sure about this, but I have the impression that 3G is better now, I can browse the web near my home, when before the update I couldn´t.
Best regards and thanks for your support.
