Okay, I have successfully rooted my inspire 4g and installed cm7 killer llama v2 on it.
However, I am now interested in updating to the latest RC or nightly of cm7. To update would I simply launch Rom Manager and install the rom that I wish? Do I need to wipe my phone before/after the new rom is installed? For backups I already have titanium backup run and I have titanium sync back it up to dropbox.
Also... is it worth bothering with the radio or kernel versions? Or does the kernel change with each rom?

1. Download CM7 RC4 from ROM Manager, but don't flash it from there, as this is more of a chance of a brick, due to the CM7 you're running being customized, go into ClockWorkMod, and choose wipe /data and wipe /cache. Then find the folder the downloaded update is in and use CWM to flash it.
2. NEVER backup/restore system data in Ti Backup between two different ROMs, it will mess things up.
3. Sometimes the kernel changes. (If something needs fixing, or if the dev is just improving the kernel and its capabilities)
4. If you have Radio S-OFF and ENG S-Off I recommend the 12.41.60.19U_26.06.04.14_M radio for all gingerbread ROMs.
Okay, thank you very much for the detailed reply. So if I flash a new rom after wiping data and cache, will I need to reinstall and reconfigure all of my apps?

So when i move to a new version of a rom, how do i keep all my info? I was just used to backup/restore with a rom version change on cyanogenmod where i can restore and it won't overwrite the previous rom and revert changes.
Do i always have to wipe all data when uploading a new rom?
Shouldn't the nandroid backup restore everything but keep the current rom?

I learned this today myself.
General rule is:
Switching ROMs? Wipe everything
Updating a ROM? Wipe cache and dalvik-cache
Installing an addon? Don't need to wipe anything
i guess that answers part of my question. the main part was when i switch roms, how do i keep all of my info? when using cyanogenmod, i could back up using nandroid backup from recovery, and restore when i installed a new rom, however it seems with some roms i cannot do this as it will overwrite changes in the new rom. how do i avoid this, how do i keep all of my data while not overwriting the new rom changes?
I'll try to answer your question, if I think I know what you mean by data. Data from ROM or data from phone/apps.
If data from phone/apps. then I would suggest Titanium Backup(Paid version) from market. Once you install a New ROM with a complete Data wipe, what ever you backed up with TB from your previous setting can be restored. This is good if you are installing a ROM not from the same dev.
Other wise if you installing a ROM from same dev, a revision, you don't have to do a wipe data.
If data from ROM, well I don't know there, never had to do it.

ok, so you're saying when, let's say, going from 1.0 to 1.1 of the same dev rom, just an update, i do not need to wipe data?
Yes. The only time you ever need to wipe data and cache is when you trying a ROM from a different dev.
If installing a different rom, then that's where TB comes in handy.
Side note: Also CWM ROM Manager backup utility will backup every thing if you wanted to revert back.
Dayton advice above is a good rule to follow.

This is not a "how to root" post.
I finally said F it and installed clockworkmod and flashed a ROM but I just did a basic one to get my feet wet.
My basic question is how do ROM upgrades get installed. Say I install the latest EaglesBlood ROM and there is an update for it. Do I have to do a complete data/cache clear and re-flash with the newest ROM or is there some sort of updater or is each developer different?

That really depends on what was updated. Most of the time if you are upgrading to a newer version of the same rom, you can get away with just flashing over it, and keeping your data intact. Clearing /cache and the dalvik-cache is recommended. However this is not always the case. Some changes require data wipes to be effective. Usually best to ask in the rom's thread if a wipe is needed.
Also, sometimes you can just do a nandroid backup, install new rom, then reboot into cwm and do an advanced restore just restoring the data partition. Again, it really depends on the rom, and what was upgraded.
I came from ARHD 1.2.2 and wiped cache, data and delvik and flashed to OpenSensation 200121007 with 4ext. and gapps 20120429.
all is well except Play won't restore any apps. Not looking forward to a one by one.
Any suggestions for an easier fix?
Tried removing my settings/acct and adding in Play. Finds my apps, but that's all.
Should I re-flash CM9, then gapps, then OS, then Bricked?
Yes also before flashing did you wipe data factories reset after wiping cash and dalvik? Make sure you have nandroid backup incase something goes wrong. Steps, wipe cash, wipe dalvik, wipe data factory reset, flash Rom, flash gaaps , see if that solved your issue. Hopefully it will. Best of luck. Before flashing Rom in 4 ext I always wipe data factory reset along with cash and dalvik for a clean install. Hope this helps. Best wishes .

Guess it's a one by one.
If you have nandroid, restore nandroid, use titanium backup to backup all apps, install new ROM, Gapps and restore from titanium backup.
While you are at it, I'll suggest try CM10.

I do have nandroid, bur I figured the last time I tried OS it was unstable so I didn't use the nandroid.
Is CM10 stable with OpenSense 1007, WiFi calling and tether?
Perhaps you can answer this.
Some suggested that TWRP was a better recovery. I tired it with the todays re-flash and still have these (gapps) issues. But it seems to have overwritten 4ext though it does use some element of 4ext based on the progress log.
Is there a way to delete TWRP and just go back to 4ext?

CM10 is quite stable not sure how it compares with Opensensation. Bruce CM10 is getting updates almost every other day. I asked you to try because since you are between ROM's you can get a feel of what CM10 is and how it works out for you.
Wifi calling , I don't think works on any AOSP/CM based ROM. Tether I've never used so dunno again. Check CM10 forum.
I think you can install 4ext on top of TWRP to replace it.

WTH, I'll try another. So far (knock silicon) OS is pretty stable. I think I didn't properly wipe the first time I tried and/or this kernel is better.
WiFi and Tether do work with AOSP (pretty sure OS is AOSP derived).
4ext simple wouldn't reinstall over TWRP2, although it doesn't appear that TWRP is making some use of 4ext "routines" somehow.
Since OS is stable, I'm good.

That happened to me when I changed my hboot by way of upgrading the firmware and my phone got a different android ID. I think titanium Backup gives you the option to restore the latter id number if you run it just when you are starting to setting up your phone. I didn't know that so I ended up installing one by one but gave me the chance to discard the ones I wasn't using

Sorry if this has been covered way too many times but I want to make sure.
I have rooted my phone that was running 3.20.502.52 with the AAHK so now I'm on the version it sent me back to and I have done nothing since. I am getting ready to switch to the Jellytime R29 ROM. I know to make a Nandroid backup but I was a little concerned about getting back to the state my phone is right now should anything go wrong or if I don't like it, go back. It seems that I can't just restore my Nandroid through CWM without flashing a different kernel since I'd be coming from a JB ROM.
My current setup is:
Android: 2.3.3
Sense: 2.1
Kernel: 2.6.35.10-gd2564fb
Software 2.47.502.7
So, in order use my Nandroid in case the Jellytime messes up, do I simply have to do a factory reset, and wipe cache, and dalvik-cache (this is considered a "full" wipe, yes?) and then flash a compatible kernel then restore my backup? And if so, can I find that exact kernel somewhere to flash or is there another one you guys can recommend me to use in my situation? OR, can I just straight up restore the Nandroid since the backup should cover the kernel too?

1. Welcome!
2. The kernel is included in the backup. You also don't need to wipe anything; just restore the nandroid. Make sure you use a fully updated recovery; make sure using ROM Manager for CWM or the 4ext Updater or Play Store app for 4ext.
3. A full wipe is system, data, and cache. Dalvik is already included if you wipe those. A factory reset only wipes data and cache, leaving system unwiped. In 4ext just choose "wipe all partitions except sdcard."
Alright. I already flashed Jellytime a while ago and so far I see no reason for wanting to go back although I did a quadrant standards test and scored lower than stock. Not sure why, but either way, this was a nice first ROM. What I wiped in cwm was the reset, cache, and dalvic. So far everything is working if I missed anything.
Didn't know wiping wasn't necessary for using backups. Must of missed that in my reading. Thanks though. I'll become less of a newb over time.

I'm sure everyone has their own advice, but I would say first thing you'll need is ROM Manager
Download the ROM you want and place it on your sdcard. Use Titanium Backup to backup your applications, and then restart your phone in Recovery Mode. When in recovery mode, make a backup by going to "Backup and Restore" > backup. Then do a factory reset and wipe your cache. Install the new rom and enjoy the addiction
Also...be careful making sure that any kernel flashed is compatible with the ROM you are flashing. If not you can brick your phone.
