I was wondering if sprint can keep up with the data used through the hotspot you can download for a rooted device. I am thinking about getting an evo. (i know that the evo has its own forum, but I figured I would ask people that have been with sprint for a while with the hero.) Basically, I want to use the phone as an internet connection, like you would dsl, but i do not want to buy the 30 per month thing that you have to buy to do it on the evo. So i just wanted to know if i would get caught and have to pay some huge bill for playing ps3 or downloading huge files through the root hotspot. Thanks for helping me out.
I seriously doubt it. These phones do so much data how would they even tell if its a laptop or not. They would have to be searching for certain ports.

Really? I've never played MW2 but for me a first person shooter server with ping above 70 is trash. Maybe MW2 is a very well lag compensated game.
i use mine daily no problems, dont play mw2 though more of a bad company guy myself
This is my average data usage for a month, actually a couple days shy, and I have never had a problem from Sprint. Been using at least this much for over a year.
Used to be on a tethered Touch Pro, and now on a Hero. I have similar usage across 3 other lines on the same plan, over 12gb total, and no problems.
Still new to Android, but I've manage to get just about all of the capabilities from my WM6 Fuze with the Captivate.
One thing I haven't seen though, is an app or any other method of tethering the GPS data to a laptop. Is this possible on Android?
I don't believe this is possible. But, why would you want to tether a broken GPS?

Maybe he wants to know for when it gets fixed. Why did you have a decent post in telling him you aren't sure, and then troll it in the next statement?
i am genuinely curious about what you would use gps tethering for? Pique'd my curiosity
as for the troll, idk. Gps worked out of the box for me. Following gps fixing threads fixed it for a bunch of people so maybe the troll should give that a try.
No humor allowed in this forum, huh. Sorry guys, I'll keep the sarcasm to myself in the feature.

lol skin, i think there just have been more trolls than normal lurkin around lately, i sorry.
phones gettin popular i guess. i see more and more new faces every day.
There are some 3rd party Windows programs that work a little better for navigation when you're out on the 4x4 trails, like DeLorme Topo and full Google earth.
Google Nav on the phone works good for "get me from Point A to point B", but I need a little more then that when I hit the trails.
I used "GPS2blue" on WM6 and it worked pretty well. Was hoping there was a way on Android, specifically WiFi or BT.
As for the GPS issues, I haven't seemed to notice any problems with mine. Seems very accurate when using satellites, although the indoor accuracy is not very good compared to the old FUze or wife's IP4.
I've searched the forum before posting this and couldn't find a similar thread, so here's my question (2 actually):
1)How big should a 3G data plan be, for the Nexus S?
2)Also, is there a way to allow only a few apps to connect to the internet through 3G, while the rest use only wifi?
I want to use it for checking mail on 2 accounts, send/receive about 40-50 messages daily (through whatsapp), a little navigation on Google Maps, 2-3 clips on youtube and checking a couple of webpages each day. In my country, unlimited data plans are a rarity and the most common are 50mb, 250mb and 500mb.Thanks!
I'm in the US and use my phone for just about everything all day so I eat up about 100 MB a day. I use wifi anywhere I don't get 4g coverage as well. I would say to be safe go with the 500 unless it is a major price difference. If you have access to wifi regularly and keep track of data usage a plan with even 250 MB should be OK. Hope this helps a little.

Agree, but it depends on your usage, for me 250mb is enought, but some months i push the limit (what costs 6 cents for 1mb, not a big deal).
I'd recommend if can to get the 500 or if possible 1gb.
I'm using my phone for about the same plus surfing the net and my monthly usage is about 600 - 700mb.
Try the app Call meter 3g so you can keep track of your usage. It doesn't count wi-fi traffic.
Good luck

Well, after some intensive reading over the internet, I think that I could settle for 500mb. In the android market, there's an app called Droid Wall (needs root) and that should make sure the only apps connecting to the internet through 3G are those I want. Thanks for your help!
Now reading about rooting the NS
EDIT: also, I've found something called 3G Watch Dog, so it's easier to keep an eye out on the data traffic over 3G.

even if you don't use a firewall (like droid wall) stand-by usage is not that big, the problem is YOUR usage, you can easly take a month with 20mb if you only let it to stand-by, but if you watch 3 youtube videos, 20mb is gone!" =o)
Wow... I go over my limit of 5gigs almost every month I guess I am one of Those heavy data users I have been hearing about.... Too bad we have this terrible bit shortage I can only Hope the carriers stumble onto a new rich source of bits to satisfy my need

Well I think 5gigs is far.. I mean FAR from what I'm capable of over 3G. Whenever there's a wifi hotspot available, I prefer connecting to the internet through it. The 3G connection is just for those areas in which there's no wifi in sight.
500Mb is sort of like the minimum where I am. The quota usually comes in 500Mb, 1G, 1.5G, 3G, 5G...
For me, I will stay under 500Mb if I don't use services like Google Maps or Waze, if I do, I will be around 700-800Mb a month.
Hey guys,
Now that Verizon's Mobile Hotspot promotion is done, what are you using to tether with your rooted Droid Charge? I am trying to use Barnacle but it keeps giving me errors.
Thanks!
Simple, Pay for the native app.

I currently don't tether, I was planning on using this; https://market.android.com/details?id=android.tether&feature=search_result
but whenever I search for it on my Charge I can't seem to find it on the market place, and clicking the direct link just gives me an error. Hope someone has found a good wireless tether, going away for the weekend and could really use one!

+1for OpenGarden. I have been using it on my Thunderbolt for a weeks now and haven't seen any issues.
I loaded Barnacle and rooted my phone last night, so far so good. But I am going to also try Open Garden to see it it meets my need (see my thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158476 )
so just to clarify guys, if use this tethering program, it can help me save a few bucks comparedd to paing for verizon's optional tethering service? ;-)
I've tried both the tethering programs in this thread and neither are detected on my PSP/NDS, the app also doesn't ask or tell me the SSID or passphrase, anyone know a REAL wireless tethering app where you can make it act pretty much like a router..?

set it to fascinate in settings though
I've used barnacle for almosta year on my D1 and it worked great. I even changed the ssid to virus hahaha lol never had anyone they to connect either lol. I am going to try to root this charge this weekend when I get home as I'm a trucker. So mad they stopped the free hotspot.
I use wireless tether for root 3.1 beta 1. For device profile I use Samsung fascinate for infrastructure mode.

I have never found one, PSP/NDS probably have the same issue with connecting to Ad Hoc networks. I had to root tablet and edit a file to make it work with A500.
Open Garden seems to have a better pass through for speed, used Wireless Tether for quite some time with no issues.
I pay enough to Vz since I never go over 5G a month even with tethering I don't feel bad at all.

Hey guys. Found this the other day.. Download Hotspot Widget by Harold muller.. Add it to your home page.. This will turn on the official Verizon Hotspot even if you aren't subscribed to a tethering package. No root required... HAPPY TETHERING!!!
Will Verizon be able to tell that we are using tethering service?

Verizon is apparently "cracking down" on illegal tethering and automatically putting you on a 2gb plan. I think using their official app only makes it works.

i play Rift using wifi tether at least 3 hours a day 7 days a week and have been doing it since the first week the fascinate has come out. i'm still unlimeted. not saying they can't track, but i have yet to be busted down to this 2g plan. I believe right now i'm sitting at 6 or 7 gigs for the month already cause i fell asleep with it still running and my girl DL'd some torrents on it ><
Have heard substantial people say Verizon is cracking down, but few if any have actually had it happen to them. And as far as tracking, I believe there is something in GB that allows them to see if were tethering or not. By analyzing the packets or something

The problem with this is, if you lose that unlimited data plan you will never get it back.
I tether also (I use the free wireless tether) to tether my ipad2 occasionally, but I try to use as little data as possible when doing that. I would be seriously p!ssed if I lost my unlimited 4G dataplan.....(I was grandfathered in from my DroidX and old Windows phones)

ya i'd stay on the safe side and use something like pdanet. you can use it through usb or bluetooth on mac or pc, and it works great! definitely a lot safer option than using verizon's app

This did not work for me. Anyone else tested?
This did not work for me either. Running gummycharged GBE 2, latest one. It just kind of clicks and stays toggled off. This did work for the original ROM installed on the phone when I first got it but I believe they probably fixed it at some point with EE4 or later.
I use the free apps and the Verizon app because I have the unlimited tether plan that I got for $30 a month on top of my unlimited data plan

Just found out today the hard way, it only works with froyo..
Tested this option and it works. The bad news is that after about an hour of blazing fast 15+ mbps my speeds dropped suddenly. I believe this lead to being severely throttled. From that point on the past two days my data speeds have hovered at 2 mbps. Did tests form various locations with a strong signal, still seeing 2 mbps. The speed test app will ramp up past 10 mbps and then rapidly drop off like a dead signal and then bounce back to around 2 megs. Tried rebooting and removing the app but still have not experienced my previous 4G 15+ mbps speeds. So I have a feeling this is not a good option to use. Use at your own risk.
