Is GPS tethering available? - Captivate General

Still new to Android, but I've manage to get just about all of the capabilities from my WM6 Fuze with the Captivate.
One thing I haven't seen though, is an app or any other method of tethering the GPS data to a laptop. Is this possible on Android?

I don't believe this is possible. But, why would you want to tether a broken GPS?

Maybe he wants to know for when it gets fixed. Why did you have a decent post in telling him you aren't sure, and then troll it in the next statement?

i am genuinely curious about what you would use gps tethering for? Pique'd my curiosity
as for the troll, idk. Gps worked out of the box for me. Following gps fixing threads fixed it for a bunch of people so maybe the troll should give that a try.

No humor allowed in this forum, huh. Sorry guys, I'll keep the sarcasm to myself in the feature.

lol skin, i think there just have been more trolls than normal lurkin around lately, i sorry.
phones gettin popular i guess. i see more and more new faces every day.

There are some 3rd party Windows programs that work a little better for navigation when you're out on the 4x4 trails, like DeLorme Topo and full Google earth.
Google Nav on the phone works good for "get me from Point A to point B", but I need a little more then that when I hit the trails.
I used "GPS2blue" on WM6 and it worked pretty well. Was hoping there was a way on Android, specifically WiFi or BT.
As for the GPS issues, I haven't seemed to notice any problems with mine. Seems very accurate when using satellites, although the indoor accuracy is not very good compared to the old FUze or wife's IP4.

Conversation with samsung support about GPS

I had this conversation with a samsung support tech earlier today, you can make your own deductions but i think we are screwed because according to him the epic launched with the GPS fix already applied and as we all know from recent posts and videos the accuracy is still ****.....
Please wait for a Samsung Agent to respond.
You are now chatting with 'Dan'
Dan: Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Dan: How may I help you?
Visitor: hi Dan, i have a captivate from ATT and the gps is terrible, is there a fix that is coming because i am really tempted to return this phone
Dan: I understand that you need to have update about GPS.
Dan: I am sorry for inconvenience caused to you.
Dan: Our support team as been working on issue with GPS.
Dan: We will have GPS update fixed by end if september.
Visitor: was the epic 4g or the fascinate launched with fix already applied to the gps ?
Dan: We have Epic released but we do not have any customers with GPS issue.
Visitor: so thge answer would be yes the fix is applied to the epic ?
Dan: To be honest yes.
Dan: However we will have GPS issue fixed.
Visitor: i have a freind with the epic and the gps is still terrible but from what you are telling me it's fixed.
Dan: I am sorry for inconvenience caused.
Visitor: ok, thanks for your time
Dan: We have many customers with Epic , but we did not have any issue with GPS.
Dan: Once we have update released it will be OTA,
Visitor: ok
Dan: Update will fix the issue.
Dan: Please let me know if I can be of any further help.
Visitor: that's it, thank you
Dan: You're most welcome.
Dan: It was a pleasure assisting you. Thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support.
According to the way that guy conversates, I wouldnt take much of what he said into consideration lol.
I have worked for Tech giant manufacturers (more then one) - and I know for a fact that the tech support people (usually 1st through 3rd level) have no idea about fixes or releases. They are not told until after things are out.
The idea that any of these guys would know that GPS in Epic is fixed, or was released with the fix that other Galaxy S phones are waiting for is doubtful.
Until an official statement is made, I won't believe anything I hear from anyone in Samsung support. Their job is to log an issue, be nice to the customer, and fix something if they can.
So why worry about it at all until some official notification comes out? If GPS is still broken, we can take our phones back as they are not meeting basic functionality requirements - if that is what people want to do.
Two months in and no GPS fix. I will reconsider before I buy a Samsung phone ever againg. Product support suck.

God you people cry way too much. Why does gps on your phone bother you so much? I am a truck driver and need directions EVERY DAY. But unlike you i guess i have the ability to read a map. And even with sketchy gps it gets me in the general direction i gotta go. Stop all the crying already. Want great GPS get a damn gps unit. I have a few i will sell you since i dont use them anymore. And return your worthless phones. Rant /off
GPS on the Samsung Eternity worked great. Wonder what the difference is.
Am I missing something? My GPS works great, I've had no problems at all. If there's anything I can provide somehow to help you guys, let me know.
Hell, I've even gotten a good signal sitting in my living room; on Google maps it even showed my location in my house properly.
If there are files or something I can pull from my phone for you, I'll do what I can.

This is so true, agree 100%. Plus, I think you kind of led him to say that the Epic had the fix by you actually mentioning it. He said yes and that was pretty much it.

Agreed, anything outside of a building and the GPS works great. I've been using it to geocache, and also have a boating gps app installed and used it flawlessly this past weekend. I can drive anywhere in my car and the GPS will not lose me once.
The only time I get a long signal search is after a week of not using the GPS function, then it takes only about 30 sec's to lock on.

I wouldn't rely on the GPS in my Captivate or any phone for that matter for flight ops. But, I do agree that if the phone says it has GPS, it should have GPS working when you buy it at the store. Doesn't matter if it's a nice-to-have feature or a core function. If it says it has GPS, then it should work.
I am hoping that this was a last minute configuration/software defect that was re-introduced following QA. There's no way a phone should be able to exit QA with such an alarmingly big severity 1 defect.

Dude. Cool. You answered my question. That's why I asked. I personally couldn't care less about the gps. it works good enough for me.
Sorry you broke your eternity. i had mine for two years. was dropped/thrown/punched countless times, the moisture label was bright red, but i never had a single issue with that phone other than when using opera mini and sometimes i would click a link and it would just refresh the page. a buddy of mine got one shortly after i did. he finally just broke his screen last week. cracks all through it and a couple "chunks" from the screen gone, but it still works. still texts on it like crazy. that thing is sturdy.
Smokestack...... Would you not complain if you bought a truck and found out it had the wheels missing?
I bought a device that is supposed to have GPS but doesn't. All I want is what I paid for. My reason for wanting it does not matter. I will never buy another samsung phone. If it hours totally unresolved I will never buy anything Samsung.
I totally believe this was/is an intentional scam. Then on top of it the reduced speed and forced data plan change.
I'm not happy and wish I could send this otherwise good phone back.

Bad analogy. A truck needs wheels to be able to serve it's purpose. A phone doesn't need GPS to work as a phone. Maybe saying something along the lines of air conditioning, it's an added bonus, such as the GPS. don't mind me, just sayin....
gotta kill these last few minutes at work some how. And you really think it's an intentional scam? take off the tinfoil hat...

Return your phone then. If you are out of the 30 days, you still have a valid case for returning it - but watch you say:
- GPS is known issue that Samsung has acknowledged.
- reduced speed? Where? HSUPA was never spec'd so you won't win that one - just because other phones have it, doesn't mean all do.
- forced data plan change - clearly spelled out what data plans work with the phone - if you don't like it, don't buy it.
So your GPS complaint is valid, and if the phone doesn't serve its advertised purpose then return it. There is no international conspiracy. maybe samsung knew about the GPS issue before they shipped, maybe not. Dev's are flashing new firmwares all the time - and it could have slipped through a rushed QA cycle.
Instead of complaining do something about. If the product doesn't work take it back. The iFools should have done this.
I think it's best for us to keep reminding Samsung that this is important. I just did here: http://www.facebook.com/SamsungMobile

Im going to try to return my phone since the GPS cant do anything in regards to navigation. It never knows what street im on even when its locked.
Is there a certain model I should be requesting that performs better?

not true. my phone is build no. 1012 rev 0.4 and everything works as expected, including GPS.
Mine has never ever, locked once!!!
Mine is 1007 stock and I've always been able to use the GPS. So imho it's pretty much luck of the draw.
I don't even care anymore. I've given up on Samdung to be honest.. terrible support and no communication for their 10 million galaxy s devices.
For what its worth, I have a 1006 build and gps is marginal at best when tracking - regardless of which ROM and gps cocktail files I throw at it.
Supposedly the newer builds have better tracking, but there isn't any PROOF.

Samdung... Clever. I prefer Samsuck myself.
I have a model 1009 running Serendipity 2.0, and my GPS gets a very quick lock and maintains lock when I'm driving in the car for the most part.
I had 2 1008's that both had great gps with Darkys rom and very spotty if any lock with other roms. I now have a refurbished 1007 running Darkys that locks fast and tracks great too.
I have a 1007, that I got to replace my old 1007 and the new phone's gps works perfectly with any rom I've used. Guess I got lucky.

I have to agree that GPS on my Captivate isn't great since day 1 either.
Recently I've been using Designgears Perception build 10.0, GPS has nothing but spectacular. Did a few long-drive road test and didn't lose signal even once and testing it with short trips for about a week now. Signal lock is within a minute. That is with both Google Maps/Navigation and CoPilot Live. A round trip from St. Robert to St. Louis, MO then from St. Robert, MO to Fort Smith, AR and back and GPS has been Spot on. This is with Perception Build 10.0 - Before I made the trip back from Fort Smith, I decided to update to Perception build 10.1 and GPS just gave out on me... did not work at all... get all kind of GPS signal but can not be locked into 3D to get an accurate position. Great thing I still have Build 10.0 on the phone decided to flash back from Build 10.1 to 10.0 and GPS is miraculously work the way it meant to be. This is the first time GPS on my Captivate has been working so well for me ever since day 1. I almost made a jump to Windows Phone 7 because of it. Now, I don't have to anymore, all thanks to Designgear.

I'm curious...
If you look at all the messages and statements here that the GPS on the Galaxy phones don't work, one would think (at least anecdotally) that a large percentage of the phones' GPS's don't work. Does anybody have any numbers showing the percentage of the phones with the problem? I mean, with multi millions of phones sold, one would think that you would hear more of it outside the tech stream media. Maybe it has been, and I just didn't notice. Does anybody have any link to the number/percentage of phones affected?

Nah, that data doesn't exist. You could start a poll thread. It'd be skewed towards XDA users (which might comprise in part those that find their phone inadequate) but that'd give some idea.
My phone varies from poor gps tracking to completely unfunctional depending on the ROM. Incidentally, all 2.2 i9000 were 100% broken for me, but 2.2.1 i9000 brought it up to "crappy". YMMV

Minus the fact that the iPhone antenna actually works... That thing never loses my position... NEVER. A simple case on the phone remedies the issue... with the captivate, there is nothing you can do but keep returning the phone.
My GPS is perfect. I have 10 locks in within 30 seconds. This is my second captivate due to me dropping the first one and the screen breaking. When I used the GPS on that device I got a Max of 3 satellites with 1 lock. I think it its that they have slightly updated the device as time has passed on.

I hear ya on the GPS. Was holding out for the stock 2.2 update to see if there was any marked improvement, and, though it might be a tad better, it's not where it should have been in the first place: still pretty much worthless as far as I'm concerned.
I've heard the inspire is like night and day better, as the comment above me confirms.
I'm getting ready to make the jump, personally.

Suffice it to say the inspire 4g does not have poorly implimented GPS hardware, and therefore does not need tons of software tweaks to get it to work, nor does it need 12 sats to get a 5 meter accuracy..
Galaxy S phones have dead GPS. Period.
If you have a Captivate get a rom based on either XXJPY or WJS3/5 -- Those have the best GPS i've found.
For stock experience, use Cog 4 with UCKB1 + adamholden85's GPS fix.
Even on a good day though, its not even close to the inspire..
Much better than the captivate, even on one of its better days, but not as quick to lock as my incredible. Overall the gps does what I expect of a phone. Navigation works well, quick to locate in maps, update location for weather, etc.
I quote Ferris Bueller:
"If you have the means, I highly recommend it. It's so choice."
I was driving 45 mph, had passenger press the lock button on maps... had a 10m lock in about 10 seconds. Tracks perfectly around turns and everything. That and this phone is just awesome. HTC FTW.
Mine is coming in tomorrow...I am coming from the captivate side as well.
GPS on the captivate was a hit or miss. Various roms would get it to work sometimes but its all in the hardware.
I am glad to hear that the inspire has a great GPS.
I originally had a bad antenna which I swapped out at the store and honestly this phone is QUICK! It's funny how used to my old phone I became about certain functions like the GPS and tracking.. Loving my Inspire.

I was unreachable for calls and the GPS wouldn't pinpoint my location accurately. We did a number of tests in store and called TS. Also I was stock at the time no question it was the phone and not a hack or rooting issue.

It's obvious that there's a huge security loophole, but then again getting kicked off is just a minor problem. The bigger problem is when someone intercept the data you send over wifi. If it works i think it's a nice too to have if you want to take control of your own wifi.

Yeah, i agree. I believe that the developer for that app is working on getting it to 'hack' and block off encrypted and secured wifi, maybe even intercept the wifi and retrieve data from the user(s). If so, that thread should be deleted immediately as that is a much greater security risk. I have a bad feeling about the future of that app.
But what can i do.

But the one I love the most its Faceniff I think he did a damn good job on hacking people Facebook if they using it with wifi.I have seen so many things that I din't though my neighbors was people like that ..but thanks to his apps I know my surrounding! And about the wifi app,it a good app I like it when family comes to stay the night and they been using the wifi signal alot and I hated when i be watching movies on my phone it keeps stopping .so I just turn the app and kick them out of my network .... except me lolz
!!! I hope he keep doing a great job!
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
If he manage to do that i hope it gets widely known so people know so people can find a way to plug the security hole. The worst security anyone have is false sense of safety.
There are enterprise level solutions that protect against this, but as far as the average user goes, it's a little above and beyond what a layperson could set up. The problem with WifiKill is there is no simple solution due to the way ARP packets work. The whole structure of networking would have to change to eliminate the flaw and really, you just can't expect that to happen.
What I don't see being a problem is it becoming too widespread in use. I've used it and about the 3rd time I shut down a whole network of devices it lost its thrill. It's kinda one of those "Hey that's kinda spiffy" tools, but unless you're a greedy whore it's just not really something you're gonna bother with.
FaceNiff on the other hand is a nasty bugger. But there is a REAL easy solution to it. Use SSL. I believe the FB app uses it and if you are using a browser just type in https://www.facebook.com. One letter more typing. The internet is a scary place, you need to protect yourself and when it's this dead simple, I don't feel sorry for people.
Wireless has always been a horribly weak system from day one. Just some articles on how easy it is to break WEP and you'll see you've never really been all that safe in the first place.

will be picking up either a focus s or titan in about an hour, question though

i'm jumping ship on android after many years and trading my atrix 2 in for one of the 2 for-mentioned. i'm leaning more towards the focus s since i do not like screen protectors and the focus s has GG.
however, my concern is the navigation. i know there's good navi apps on the market, but, they are $50! lol, and still don't look as good as google navigation.
does anyone know what MS has as far as features planned for tango or apollo? will bing maps ever be updated to more friendly navigation set?
also, google talk, how well does it work on wp7? gtalk is very important since it's the only way i communicate with my wife and friends (well, as far as chat/text goes, lol).

also, google talk, how well does it work on wp7? gtalk is very important since it's the only way i communicate with my wife and friends (well, as far as chat/text goes, lol).

there is a five dollar turn by turn app that is actually quite good!
Just fyi
Also bing works for free, and will indicate when you make a wrong turn + say the direction if you tap the screen.
I bought navigon. I would have to say it's way better then google.
Turn by turn however is good. The online version is low cost but the offline version is 33.00 which at that amount you might as well by navigon and get 3d offline.

i'm jumping ship on android after many years and trading my atrix 2 in for one of the 2 for-mentioned. i'm leaning more towards the focus s since i do not like screen protectors and the focus s has GG.

Dude, almost every post you've made in at least a week have been on the WP7 forums trying to criticize or talk down about the phone or to people asking questions about the phone. Yeah, you like Android. We get it. Why do you feel the need to come to another phone OS forum and sit around talking bad about it?

Nokia drive is floating around here which works ok. Google maps works.but you have to click for it to talk to you. It will update your location and stuff and your directions on screen but just will not talk unless you click it. very weird but overall it works ok and has traffic and such. I can't imagine they leave it that way forever.

There is no native Google Talk client available for Windows Phone 7, but you do have options like IM+. IM+ actually works rather well and supports multiple IM services, even if it doesn't look as Metro as most apps do.
