Attention attention! Whenever you thought they were dead they're coming to eat your brains! (or whatever).
Please visit the Transformer forum for the comparison that I will update more regularly!
PLEASE NOTE:
I do not have an updated version of Polaris if available since I am running my TF101 on an excellent custom ROM. I also have not found it necessary to update the Documents to Go comparison since the version number increased marginally (and it was never good to begin with).
I also noticed that some apps might benefit from installing the right fonts into the internal memory into root/fonts. My comparison is based on a stock scenario where no additional fonts have been installed.
Updates
Here is the UPDATED overview table including the SoftMaker apps (although there is no "umbrella suite" like in the others). Please take some time to go through the features as some have actually improved!
I have also added the PowerPoint comparison here (did I really never have a separate post for it?) with the most recent office suites and updated the Word comparison.

Spredsheet comparison [Updated 02/18/2013]
A good spreadsheet can be used for hundreds of purposes: Inventory, checklists, schedules, shopping lists, etc. I think that this is one of the most important reasons to have a powerful mobile computing device! Unfortunately, there are still severe shortcomings with the currently available spreadsheet apps.

Thank you for the review. Sounds like all of them need some work. Wish someone would port OpenOffice to Xoom.
thanks, looking forward to the rest
anyone use wordperfect anymore? Hold in out for a review for that.
I prefer QuickOffice to Documents to Go if not just because I think it looks better on the large screen, but also the cloud sync for Google Docs, dropBox and other cloud services is phenomenal. I keep 90% of all the docs I use in the cloud so I can use them literally any where.
QuickOffice to me (in daily use) just seemed to keep up with typing and react to the keyboard a bit better.
I never tried PicSel, but some of the reviews I had read said it still needed alot of work on a tab.
Can you add Google Docs into your review as well?

I might in the future but for now I wanted to focus on the comparison of commercial applications.
GoogleDocs from the Xoom browser has been an exercise in frustration me today.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
Thanks for doing this. I was going to do the same thing. I bought Doc2Go about 18 months ago for my Droid. I could never really get into using an Office Suite on my phone -- it's just too small. But with the Xoom using an Office Suite is very practical (especially with a bluetooth keyboard -- at least it would be if they would fix the repeating character problem).
So I was waiting for OpenOffice HD to be released and I bought it right away. There were some obvious disappointments, but I've got hope that it will improve.
I stumbed across Picsel Smart Office and noticed that it's only $5.99 at the Amazon App store so I went ahead and bought it. At this point I think it holds the most promise.
I did notice one glaring problem in your word processor and presentation comparison. You state that there are no text formatting option in Picsel Smart Office. That's not true. If you double click on a word it selects and you get a popup (on a tablet or ribbon bar on the bottom of a phone) with the ability to bold, underline, italic, set font (type and size), set foreground and background color and set list (bullet or number). The highlighted word (selection) can be extended with tablet typical markers at each end of the selection and there's even a handle that you can use to grab the selected text and move it (basically it combines cut and paste into a drag operation).
You haven't really talked about cloud integration, but here's my take on that.
QuickOffice HD integrates with:
Google Docs
Dropbox
box
huddle
SugarSync
mobleme
DocumentsToGo integrates with:
Google Docs
desktop
Smart Office integrates with:
Dropbox
Google Docs (claims to be coming in the future)
I also want to add some comments on find/replace. Both DocumentsToGo and QuickOffice support find and replace. Smart Office only seems to support find.
It's frustrating that none of these packages has everything needed. I can see that for now I may need to pick the package to use based on what I'm trying to accomplish.
I'll follow this thread along and throw in my two cents now and then.

Thanks a lot for your input! I was actually expecting that I missed some features and hoped that others will point that out! I will add your cloud information to the table if you don't mind, and correct the font formatting options. I guess I was too frustrated to check everything in detail.
No problem ;-)
I'm still exploring too.

Thanks for all the info! This really will help deciding which one to purchase!
I own quickoffice for the xoom and have been generally satisfied with it. It seems as though adding headers and footers does not work, but they are recognized when loading a doc made on the computer. Also, double spacing in docs does not seem to work, which is a huge bummer. Another problem I've had is pressing the tab button creates a box on my doc rather than an indent, which bugs the crap out of me. It formats fine for a printer though.
If anyone's found solutions to these few things please share.
And to the OP, thanks for posting this! Wish I had seen this before I made my purchase.
Thanks for the great info. I have hesitated buying these programs due to lack of information on them, but I will need to pull the trigger on one. Dropbox is my lifeline so that might force my decision.
Just updated!
Check the first post to see screenshots of some PowerPoint features. Hopefully the Word comparison will follow this weekend (4/16-17).

Yeah, I heard the wake-up call as well... Although, if they are smart they'll realize that Windows7 phones are doomed and invest int he Android platform, just like they released office for Mac OS X. I am curious to see what the Asus Transformer Office suite can do! I'll head over to their subforum and check!

I've been trying to find a great notepad but I haven't found a really great app.
I'll give you a list of the notepad's I've tried and there features:
aNotepad:
Simple small notepad (no special features)
OI notepad:
Save txt to SD
auto create links
AK notepad:
pin to homescreen
sync with snaptic.com
remider
XM notepad:
Looks really great
Note everything:
Should be able to import notes from outlook but the process it too complicated for it to be really possible to keep syncing them
Ok if you use any other notepad (+features) or if I forgot a feature or something just let me know.
I've been trying to find a note taking app also. One of the few things I liked from WM was the built-in Notes functionality, where starting it provided a list of your existing notes, or let you create new ones. Making new notes was quick and simple, you didn't have to select edit before editing your existing notes, you didn't have to save your notes since they automatically saved when you closed them, etc etc. I used it in the car to jot down the names and artists for songs on the radio I liked, so ease of use was important so I preferably didn't crash.
I've been looking for a damn decent Wiki program for Android and I have yet to find one.. I've tried Wikilin, Wikimind Lite, and some other random ones I've removed.. All are painful to edit with, or don't really give a good experience in regards to being a wiki (easily link other pages, back references, etc)..
but for just flat-out notes, Catch is nice in its Snaptic sync..
Personally, I'm a big fan of a program called mNote
Here is a link to it on AppBrain.
It uses your SimpleNote account (simplenoteapp.com), which is free, and automagically syncs all your notes across whatever platforms you have software installed on. It's kind of like dropbox for simple notes.
None of these.
I use Text Edit, which is literally a .txt editor.
Sync with Dropbox (among other files) for instant viewing and editing on multiple PCs and my phone.

Except that the Dropbox Android app doesn't automatically update, right? Last I messed with it, it was basically just a GUI front end to the website with some perks, not a full time sync like the desktop, or even a manual sync.. Maybe it's changed.
I use Catch Notes (used to be called 3banana notes), same makers of AK Notepad. They might not sound familiar because they recently changed names (used to be snaptic). I like it because it syncs with their site, which can be accessed on a PC. So longer notes can be easily typed on your computer and simply synced later, and vice versa.
As a bonus, you can add pics and other media to notes if you wish.
you need a other option.
I use Springpad. LOVEIT
I use [Notes] by Yuli for quick notes (time/place tracking) via it's note list's time stamp
and [Note Me] by Paramvir Bali for long term notes/ project tracking and such. (tags)(send to calendar).
Both are instant edit+auto save, no cloud, local storage only (which I like).
Both have dark/black theme which goes well with the android UI imo.

Umm...why does Notes need to be able to send SMS messages? Reading messages and contact data, I can see that, if it can automatically take notes on current calls, texts, etc. But SENDING messages??

I browse to the directory with the files that were changed on my phone and after a few seconds it auto-uploads the files. You have to "sit" in the folder for a second or two before it will auto-upload the files in that folder.
Infinitely better than connecting a USB cable and mounting the drive.
Catch Notes for me. Great program. Makes the inbuilt one on the iphone I used to have look very, very silly indeed.
Catch for me ..
In Android I've tried ColourNote, Note Everything, Astrid Tasks and Catch. So far for me, Catch wins with ease of use, a few simple extra features and syncing. It doesn't record audio, but I didn't much use that feature in notes anyway.
I was trying to find one which would open Windows Notepad's obscure .pwi files with no success, as I use notes almost daily. I use Win7 on PC, so syncing/converting with active sync is a non-option. To transfer them to Catch is a little clumsy, but you only have to do it once. On my HD2 under WM6.5, I open a note, select all, copy, then go to catch.com in the browser and paste it into a new note .. repeat. Once booted into Anroid, syncing gets your notes onto your phone and is accessible/editable on any PC, or thru WM using the browser.
One suprise, I have a really long text file for my homebrew beer log which was in Word. It's always taken ages to open/edit on my phone, but was instantly editable in catch!

Version 3.003 of Documents to Go was released. I haven't done in-depth evaluation yet but judging from the change log and the minimal increase of the version number, I don't expect much of an improvement regarding the short-comings of D2G's functionality.
changes:
What's in this version:
3.003 (961) 5/19/11
•Support Desktop Sync on Honeycomb (full version)
•Improve main UI for Honeycomb
•Various fixes/improvements -
Fix registration on Moto Xoom
Fix hyperlinks in PDF (full version)
Improve PDF stability (full version)
Improve overall stability
Support external SD/USB on Acer A500

Well I don't want to do any major editing but I would like something that's going to be an overall better product for viewing and slight editing. Minor quirks are to be expected on a mobile pl.
Added to ultimate thread. Nice job.
WOW!! Awesome work funnycreature. Thank you.
you sir are a god. i've been looking for something like this ever since i got my TF.
Good to see that basically Polaris is the best for word, which is what i use the most.
personally my only gripe against polaris is that it can't save in docx format which my school requires, but it also can't spell check if i'm typing from the TF keyboard, so i have to bring it into my windows PC anyway to review.
Very nicely done, easy to follow, thanks for doing that.
I also see that Polaris Office is best for me (when they fix the non-pasting bug)

I was wondering if you have yet connected the transformer to a projector/beamer and started a presentation with polaris office? Did this work well? Could you easily go a slide further?
I was also wondering if any of these apps had handwriting recognition in Word? I mean writing on the screen with a capacitive stylus and the writing being recognized and changed into a word script. This seems to work very well on Win7 tablets with Word so hopefully on Android too.
And Thank you so much for the fabulous comparison.

I have not done either but I wouldn't get my hopes up too much. If you do a search there are some threads out there about using a stylus with the TF and about programs that do work with it. So far I have not come across handwriting support in the office suites but maybe someone can prove me wrong!
Yep, Polaris Office is the best, but not yet good. I hate how is managed the showing of the soft keyboard, writing text, and the impossibility of correct selected text.
This is only an example.

What do you guys think of this vs. Google Docs ? I've been using Google Docs for a while. The download seems pretty decent at least for getting by while you are on the go.

I've been using Evernote for years and really like it. It's like a blank canvas for you to create your own method of organization. It took me a why to create a folder structure that worked for the various things I need to keep track of.
Springpad is another good one out there. It has some prebuilt organization structures that will help you get started much quicker than with evernote such as a blank notes, tasks (with check boxes) and the ability to add items via search or scanning a barcode.

Can you handwrite on beautiful notes?
Has anyone tried pensupremacy..I haven't but curious how it is?
I spent a few weeks trying to figure out a good set up for class notes..
Check out Freenote. IDK why nobody else suggests it, but it lets you do everything. you can record sound and input them, take pictures, take video, and put all these things right in the same note.
You can write with a stylus, and after each word it automatically shrinks it to whatever font size you want and in line, so that you can write big and clear.
You can draw free hand.
And you can type right in the same lines as all the above.
Its by far the best note taking app available that I have tried; and i have tried literally every one of them listed above.
The other app i would suggest is Repligo Reader. If your classes are anything like my classes, they give tons of notes on PDF. Well this app is a pdf editor, you can draw on them, and input text boxes to type in, and then save it all within the PDF.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the input, but I mentioned that in the OP. I get the out of memory issue in Freenote all the time!
usually i just use the default office app that comes with the Transformer to take notes... typed notes that is... not handwritten.
I am kind of frustrated by the lack of a school-oritented notes program that features both typing and drawings.
After over a month of searching, I found freenote to be the only program sporting both features, and unfortunately it is incredibly buggy, has a terrible UI, and just looks ugly.
My work around has been to use ezPDF Reader, which by nature is a PDF annotation tool. I created a series of 40-page blank pdfs and open them up in the app. From there I can add text boxes, hand drawings and pre-set drawings...with them saved as PDFs. It has worked so far but ultimately it is really ridiculous that no one is capitalizing on this. The Applestore sports dozens of applications that do this and I have no clue why all we have available is Freenote. Missed opportunity right there.

Im suprised you have so many issues with freenote, I use it daily and have never had an issue
I agree there is tons of room for improvement though, both in free notes interface, and the need for other options in general.
when do you typically get the out of memory issue?
is it adding multiple pics, and documents to your worksheet?
or just continuing on the same page forever?
or just random occurances?
I typically do one page per section, so they remain fairly short, and rarely add more than one or two pics to a page. I just hand draw stuff instead of taking pictures.
Off curiosity, whats your favorite stylus?
I love Colornote on app market

SuperNote
I think SuperNote is the best note taking app..
is very similar to FreeNote in the functionality (text, handwritten, drawing, insert picture, ...) but has a beautiful tablet interface..
+1 for AntiPaper Notes HD that someone has mentioned in this thread that is a good alternative in case you don't like SuperNote..
Writepad Stylus is nice, it has palm detection so you don't have to worry about awkwardly floating your palm over the screen as you write. And typing support too!

Agreed!!

I completely agree. SuperNote is awesome. It does everything the OP requested and is free.
SuperNote is great, but it lacks RTL support. Writepad doesn't care much what language and direction you're writing.

BEFORE REPLYING ON THIS TOPIC WITH YOUR REQUEST PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING ANSWERS TO MOST REQUESTED FEATURES
- Access to notes by website and other OS devices like Windows
Due to the cost of hosting a service that would allow access to the notes by a website this feature is not planned in the up coming months.
- Adding photo's / drawings and handwriting
Note list is currently focusing on getting the best user experience for writing notes by keyboard.
There are many items that I want to implement before switching the focus on other kind of note taking options.

DEVELOPERS PLEASE READ
If you are an Android developer and want to write a widget or other app that communicates with Note list, you can use the Note list content provider.
The content provider allows you to communicate (read only) with Note list and query data from the app.
The data specifications of the content provider can be found at this GitHub project:
Note list development library
You will need to add the Note list read data permission to your app manifest, this will be visible to the user.
The user also needs to allow third party apps to read data from Note l!st, this is a setting in the preference screen in Note list.
If you have published an app that uses the Note l!st content provider, you can join the beta test community on Google+ to test your code before updates get published. Contact me with a link to your app and I will send you an invitation.

No there is no backup or restore feature at the moment. I'm thinking on how I want to implement such features. My initial idea was to create my own cloud service. This would give me more options and better synchronization performance. But hosting a service like that cost money and the app only generates a few dollars each month. So if the download numbers do not go up a lot in the up coming weeks it's no option. Therefor I'm now looking into other cloud solutions like synchronizing with dropbox. However this will be less efficient and more limited than running my own service, also users can alter the files on dropbox and break the synchronization. It's not ideal but at the moment it looks like the only way for my to create a synchronization/backup feature.
Other backup features could be saving the notes to the sd card. I Do want to write something like that in the future.
At the moment the only way to export your notes from the app is by using the share function, that way you can save it to a email or text file. But it's one note at the time and you can not read them back into the app.
If anyone has good ideas please let me know, I'm still looking for the best solution.

Its compatible from 2.2 and up. I Had to drop support for 2.1 in last update. But almost every 2,x device is upgraded to 2.3.x anyway.
Offline backup would be nice yes. I Should be able do reuse most code for offline and cloud backup.
Elegant UI I will try it

Yeah that would be an awesome idea for future updates.
It's on my long term todo list haha. Very looooonnnggg todo list.
It's a shame most other notes apps have about 2 year head start on me. I'm having great suggestions from users and ideas that would be great in the app.
I Write them all down and hope to be able to build them in the future.
R: [APP][2.2+] My note's app "Note l!st" v2.4
Very well done app! You may add the cloud sync and it become one of the greatest!
Inviato dal mio Galaxy Nexus con Tapatalk 2
Very nice design
I install it and going to test..
And possibly send a donation
The app looks great! I've just downloaded it and will give it a test ride.
My suggestion for an online sync - box.com
It gives users a possibility to map the cloud drive as additional HDD through webDAV. I am not sure what options for cloud sync you have in mind, but I think that since the webDAV folders act as local drives it can give you a wide range of possibilities.
Framework
You used any framework for UI?
What an absolutely brilliant note taking app!!
I really hope to see cloud sync (to Dropbox would be awesome) and an accommodating Windows based app so that notes can be added/deleted/edited etc on a PC.
Multi selection of items to apply batch actions (e.g.: delete) would also be good.
I'll definitely be donating for this one. Thank you!
EDIT: Donation sent. Keep up the fantastic work and most all - please keep it simple. There is nothing worse then an overcomplicated, sluggish, note taking app.
