Major Exchange headache -- no contacts, calendar - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

We have a new Xoom WiFi, and would love the thing except for one major problem. When we connect our main Exchange account, it spins forever but downloads nothing -- no emails, contacts or appointments.
If we add an account that's email only, the emails come down and everything works as expected for that account. If I move contacts into one of these secondary accounts, then they no longer work.
We have similar issues with Touchdown for Tablets, except there no mail appears in the inbox -- only subfolders. Plus only today appears in the Calendar. Appears to be a Touchdown bug -- bad one.
We really, really want to keep this tablet. But it's going back unless we can actually access and use our email, contacts and calendar.
It's an Exchange 2010 server, and we're accessing it via https over ActiveSync. Any assistance is most appreciated.

Can you connect any other android devices to it?

Yes -- no problem connecting other devices
We have two Droid Xs and a Droid Incredible attached to the server. No issues.

What are you talking about? I connected to my company's Exchange account with no problem, and I was able to get to the company contacts and see my calendar on the XOOM.
Here is a trick that I found out:
When you add your login account enter in the format "\my_login_id". Notice that I being the login with a backslash "\". DO NOT enter your domain name.

/your_id
That's what I did. It apparently has something to do with the security settings back on the server. If anyone has any experience there, it might help us troubleshoot...

Your Exchange administrator might be enforcing security settings (Required PIN, remote wipe, etc). Generally you are supposed to get a warning from android stating it is being required and asking you if you want to enable it. Any chance you said no to this?
One of my friends had almost the same issue and for some reason his phone wasnt acknowledging the requirements. He had to set them manually and then he got his contacts and emails.
not sure it's your problem but it might help

That sounds more than reasonable. I did hit "OK" when asked to allow Exchange to set the security parameters on the phone, so I know it was being asked to adhere to some standard.
What's the process for the manual setup you alluded to in your post? I'd like to give that a try.
Thx...

Also check how many items you have in your mailbox. If you have over 20,000 you may have some trouble syncing.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA Premium App

With the zoom it does not seem to use the "standard" MS Active Sync which allows just using your address and password then it auto configures based on settings in exchange.
When setting up my exchange accounts I entered the email address and password. When it went to auto detect I have to click cancel. Then go back and put the domain in front of the user name then add the address for the owa site (owa.server.xxx)
Do you have outlook? Go into the account settings then select your account then change. Look for the More settings button > then connection > Exchange Proxy Settings this will give you some idea what you need it it is configured.
So:
Domain\username
Password
server (owa address)
check use SSL

Please don't take this the wrong way.. You should call your company/schools helpdesk or Exchange admin. The native email client is pretty easy to setup, from your description it sounds like you've got a local (device side) configuration problem.
When you are setting up the client, are you:
1. Entering the correct domain\username - if you are having problems try not adding domain\ . Instead enter your username with your company's FQDN (example: [email protected]) please note this is not the sane thing as your email address.
2. When entering your server info, you do not add the "xttps://" just enter the URL (example: Wrong - xttps://owa.xxxxx.. - Correct - owa.xxxxx.)
3. If your company is more than likely enforcing the EAS policy - if so once you successful configure the client you will be prompted to set a password/pin (if they set that as a rule) so if you get that far you should be golden....
Hope you get it working...
Cheers,
Hatxtrick

I haven't seen a responce from OP so I thought I'd pop a few screenshots off, as a walk through.
jldeitch one other possibility: Have you ever had a EAS type of device activated on your exchange server? i.e WMD (Windows Mobile Device), Palm, etc… any smart phone other than a *blackberry
(Please see * in next comment)
If you haven’t your exchange admin may need to enable that feature on your exchange account depending on how your company has setup account provisioning. .( Also if you carry a Blackberry for your organization you would still need to have the exchange active sync featured on your account. BB’s have their own server/account outside of exchange .
Also your company’s EAS policy may be setup to require encryption on the device & to not allow non-provisionable devices. (I’m not sure if the Xoom will pass the device encryption requirements, if not then the second part of the rule would block you from completing the activation.)
I’m an Exchange/BlackBerry admin for my company, we had to tweak the hell out of our policy to get the wide range of devices & Android OS levels to work with our EAS Policy. A good example is the OG Droid, once a EAS policy w/ a mandatory password (PIN) rule is turned on the devices would stop communicating with Exchange due to the inability to enter a PIN only a pattern screen lock, if we set our policy to allow non-provisionable devices, the user could partially active their device but most had trouble with features such as PUSH, calendars & contacts.
I’ve added a couple of screenshots of our ‘pretty generic’ EAS policy, to help you understand.

Looking for an e-mail prog which is able to...

...synch the stats bar correctly with the server. I'm using three different email accounts and on my PC I'm using thunderbird. All I want is that my Note is always up to date with the server. That works only if I delete an Email. But if I just read an email, the "new email" icon in the status bar will stay and the email prog will still show the email as "unread" so I have to manually set it to "unread" every time I open up the prog.
It's the same for the stock email app, k9 or aqua mail. It workd perfectly on my old HTC desire with the stock Email app and exchange active sync. Though there is no exchange active sync on the Note and it seems like that imap idle push isn't good enough for read/unread flags.
Any idea?
You will get option of Exchange active sync, by selecting manual setup on note.
I have posted an app 'seven mail' somwhere in Android application section, that is fine for multiple accounts.
Edit : read my post in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363658
Well, I saw the option for echange though it doesn't work with m.google.com like it used to. I think exchange is something different from exchange active sync which was available on the HTC.
i hav just check it, there is no issue to connect.
wat i did
email apll - entered full email n pw
selected manual setup
kept field as it is n working.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
lol what? Kept field as it isn't working? What's that supposed to meaN?
I believe that in dr. ketan's posts N = and
Well, it's still not a very precise description and it certainly isn't working for me.
here again
open appllication email
write your full email ([email protected]) and password, then only select manual setup.
you have nothing to change on next screen
it shud work. and next screen will give you option to push setting.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Well, no. it doesnt work. All I gett is "could not connect to server". Also it seems a bit weird that you say "nothing to change". There are clearly fields where you NEED to enter information like a server adress.
Works here. When I read any Gmail or Exchange emails on my device, then open up Outlook, my mails show up as read.
when i write email and pw on first page, then selecting manual setup, it gives me choice to select method to connect pop , imap n exchane isn't?
when i select last microfoft exchange active sync.
in next screen i can see all field auto filled like
exchange server m.google.com
here on this screen i hav made no change and it connects successfuly when i press next and leading me to push settngs.
are you on ICS?
i am on ics india stock.

THen pls tell me wich programm you used and how you configured the email client in detail.
this is stock 'email' application of ics ROM.
configuration is same wat i told you.

try enhanced email, works fine for me
The doctor has a lot of patience.. he even gave you screen shots to guide through..
Check them and it should work.
I personally am using the "TouchDown" for my corporate emails.
If something is marked as read in this app, it is marked as read on the server ..
It is the same even with the STOCK (built in) email app on ICS or GB.
I have used it in all forms and chose Touchdown as it blocks the corporate security control only to the app and does not give them access to my memory card or contacts ..
Hope this helps.
Doctor Ketan, I m amazed by the patience and support you exhibit....hats off:thumbup:

Remote Desktop over internet ?

Hi everyone,
it might be a stupid question but I was wondering if the Remote Desktop app could be used to access my laptop via internet.
I know it works very well when the Surface and the laptop are connected to the same Wireless router but I would like to know if th same as possible, given the fact that the laptop and the Surface are connected to different (distant) wifi networks.
I searched for this but could not find a clear answer or "how to" to do it.
Thank you very much
You can do it, look up port forwarding for remote desktop. You need to setup your router to do it.. I think the default port for RD is 3389
Thank you very much
You will also have to know the public IP address of the router, do the port forwarding and it works fine. You can use DynDNS or one of the other services to keep the IP address updated. Or, you can use TeamViewer to do it without touching your router. You have to set up an account at TeamViewer, but everything is free and it works well.

I remote in from outside networks and it works great. Now I just wish we could enable the setting to allow us to transfer files. Where it shows us the local hard drive on the remote computer and all we have to do is drag and drop.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Can you not? Remote Desktop still supports this, at least the desktop version (haven't tried the "Metro" one).
Huzzah!
I'm actually using metro-app on a daily basis with no-ip (so i don't have to remember my own ip-adress all the time)
So all you need to do is:
1. Get your self an account at: http://www.noip.com/
2. Create a host and install client
3. Open port: 3389 on your router and point it to the right computer
4. Allow it in the firewall
5. Connect
There is ofc more steps if you want to be more specific, but I think you'll figure it out
I would have to say Team Viewer is by far the easiest solution.
Yeah +1 Teamviewer here..

++1 just tried this out, dead simple to use and no networking mojo needed.
Interesting you guys have chosen TeamViewer so clearly,....I've just tried it, and it will make due for now, but I need to copy and paste text from pdfs constantly and I noticed it to be extremely laggy by comparison (to RD). I'm guessing it's because it needs to download more data than the native client, but if there are any suggestions on speeding it up please post.
Remote Desktop/RemoteApp Problems
I have not been able to connect while out-of-network.
I've waisted several days of productivity trying to resolve this by myself, then on the phone with Microsoft, and some of them aren't even familiar with Surface RT. So with connecting to RD in-network is pretty easy and effective, hopefully some here can confirm that they have the same problems and/or offer possible solutions.
As I see it, there are 3 interfaces where we can connect to RD on the Surface RT: The the pre-installed desktop Remote Desktop found via swipe and search, the metro downloadable Remote Desktop, and RemoteApp via control panel).
I see where the computer is pinged and port 3389 is open, so I will state the problems I see with each when I try log into a Windows 8 Host computer:
1) pre-installed RD:

It's great and your computer name is there for you and ready while logged into your account and in-network. You have options like "Connect and don't warn me If server authentication fails" that I see helped out a lot of people on Windows Server with certificate issues.
Once out of network on Surface RT, however, you get "Remote Desktop can't find the computer ______. This might mean that "_____" does not belong to the specified network. Verify the computer name and domain that you are trying to connect to."
2) Metro UI:
It seems to ping the computer faster when you put :3389 at the end of your IP. However, no success after trying with and without the port ending. The messages I get are....
3)RemoteApp:
this is the solution I've seen in most tutorials,...but the reason given for not connecting is "The remote computer cannot be authenticated due to problems with its security certificate."
Instead of the option to bypass it (which option 1 gives you), there is no other option and it says "Windows cannot continue setting up this connection. Contact your workplace administrator for assistance."
This message caused me to learn more about certificates than I ever wanted to know. I've tried starting up MMC and making sure the cert listed in Remote Desktop was copied to the Trusted Root Certificate Authorites folders (both sides as local computer certificates). I've tried different combinations and haven't really gotten anywhere.
If anyone connects via #3, please post specs on your certificate if you can find it.
Any help on getting any of these methods to work is appreciated. It bares repeating that port 3389 is listed as open on my home network, traffic is forwarded to the correct PC, and all firewalls are disabled until I can resolve this.

Open: Opens the email app inbox
Delete: Deletes the Floatification
Reply: Reply from within the email app
Quick Reply: Reply from within the Floatification
Delete All: Deletes all recent FloatMail Floatifications
Delete Message: Deletes the email message from the remote server

Very promising.
Since most of us will have either the default mailer, gmail, K9 or some other popular mailer up, the ability to import accounts setting would be very highly appreciated. Kind of a pain to enter this stuff once more from the phone's keyboards, even the best of them
Thanks Dovid. I have already implemented export/import with an encrypted export file. When you tap on the export-file it will automatically associate the file with FloatMail and populate the settings. I'll expose that functionality soon in version 1.4 or 1.5. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers, Glen.

Quite nice. Will try the 1.4 or 1.5 app once posted ( and I have decided whether or not to keep the 4.4.3 Omnrom).
I take it one still needs the original emailers around to issue the notification? Or once, imported, can they be removed if this be one's preferred mailer? Read the Play description so seems this can work on its own. Actually I only use K9 so would probably keep it around.
Exchange support puts this over the rest!

Sorry I should have been clearer before. The export/import feature will backup/restore the FloatMail settings which is ideal when:
1. You want to reset the device
2. You want the same settings, but on another device
But it won't automatically configure the app based on your K9/Gmail settings.
The app connects directly to your IMAP server. In the case of Gmail, it would connect to the server using IMAP-IDLE/Push-mail. When a message is sent, it will automatically appear in a floatification within a few seconds.
It is capable of opening the inbox or compose screen of any email app that you want. [You just need to choose the app from a list on the account setup screen] However, since it shows the full message and you can do quick replies hopefully users will not need to open their email apps so often.
Cheers,
Glen
Awesome work mate, always nice to see a new extension like this
It's a nice idea but i have a problem.

This is work with any email account (so is set up by itself)? Have not seen this yet, maybe work a look.

How would you like 36TB's of storage?? FOR FREE!!!
So who is offering this? Qihoo 360, which is some Chinese company, only information I could find: is a Chinese company best known for its antivirus software. I would advise you to be cautious I haven't use any of the services yet and it does require you to download a desktop app and mobile client. You can delete these after all is setup and everything will stay you don't have to have them installed but you must install them to get the extra space.
*NOTE:This is a Chinese company, use your best judgment on what you store. I do not plan on storing sensitive information on here or any type of data that you would hate to loose or for someone else to get their hands on; that's what Dropbox, OneDrive, Share, Copy, and all the other secure cloud hosts are for and why you get a limited amount of free storage I'm a Network Technican in a call center and have tons of non sensitive stats, reports, and recording that we use just to track progress of the system that is in multiple locations so this give me another backup and will remove it off my computer at home atleast. I have 3 other backups to the data this is just another avenue so if all my stuff get's deleted I'm not at a loss, nor if anyone happens to get access to my account and look through it they'll see lots of numbers and data but nothing that's gonna hurt me or anyone else and more or less just annoy someone looking at the data trying to find a meaning.
Think of it this way:
This is like your front porch; You can use it to store things, but someone can still walk by and take something.

NOTE: If you have any problems or troubles and can't figure something out I suggest this trick. Download the new Google Translate app off of Play store and use the new camera feature!! This made everything simple (had use 2 phones) because all I had to do was take a picture of the screen I was stuck at to find out the translation.
So lets go ahead and start. Here are the steps to getting setup:
1. Go to http://yunpan.360.cn
2. You should see a blue and white screen with a login box towards the right with some scrolling images to the left. Click the blue text at the bottom of the forum.
3. You should now be on a registration screen, here is the translation:
Welcome to register 360 cloud disk
Email (Mailbox)
Password (6-20 Characters)
Confirm Password
Verification Code (Not Case Sensitive)
I have read and agree to the "360 User Terms of Service"
Sign up now
4. You should then be redirected to a site with a green android looking guy and instructions to check your email to activate. You have 48 hours.
5. After you've verified your email go to http://down.360safe.com/yunpan/360wangpan_setup.exe to download the Qihoo 360 Windows Client
6. Once you have everything downloaded and install run the application
7. When the application first starts you should get a login screen (blue box) that has 2 tabs. Here is the translation:
Tab 1: Ordinary Login | Tab 2: Seamless Login
360 Account Login
Account
Password
Remember Password | Automatic Login
Log in
Forgot Password (Under log in button)
Note: If you get a pop up while logging in means you haven't activated your account yet
8. After you log in you should see that you start with 360GB, and after your first login you should get a pop-up like this:
Translation:
Congratulation
Obtain large cloud disk space permanently
"Something about how many harddrives it equals"
Click to receive
9. If you click the link you should now be at 10.4 TB, but what about the other 26TB?
10. To get the other 26TB you have to install the Android app which is the reason for me posting this so we can get it translated!
11. Download link for the android app: http://down.360safe.com/yunpan/360yunpan_android.apk (There is an iOS app)
12. Install the downloaded apk, one weird thing is that the app seemed to auto close on tablet. I used and old junk tablet we let the kids play with incase it was infected.
13. Open the app and this is where maybe someone can shed some light as I didn't translate the splash screen so I'm not sure what the 2 options are for. I can tell you that option 1 (Blue) will only allow you to enter a phone number but not sure what it's linked back to. Option 2 the grey option is the one that we want as we already created a 360 account.
14. Click the grey 360 tab to open the login screen
15. Input your email, pass and login (This is actually in english if your phone is set to english)
16. Press the login button and BAM 26TB instantly!!!!
17. I can't move around the app very well in Chinese but if you go back to your desktop client and check your space it should be at 36.4TB now!!!
Thats it! If you look at the first screen shot you will see it lists 36.4TB the second shot is initial setup showing the 360GB

New gmail account without phone number?

I just thought this may be another place worth asking this... Has anyone come up with a way to create a new gmail without having to give them your real phone number for sms verification? Especially with Sim hijacks on the rise it seems, I'd rather keep my number as private as possible, only people I actually know, or businesses I trust like my bank have my real number, im not one to put it on Facebook or anywhere public like that. But I'd like to create a new gmail account. It gives you no option to dodge the phone number on sign up and use say an alternate email instead. At that, you can't even revive an older, *already* created but haven't logged in for a long while gmail account, without giving them your number.
I've tried things like TextNow, fongo etc these don't allow SMS verification (which is kinda bs cuz what if that was the only phone number I had? What if I had a data only cell plan and that was my one and only number?)
I just wondered if there was any sort of root based way to force gmail to skip the verification, or allow it via another email?
I'm curious about this with other things as well but my current issue is gmail

I just thought this may be another place worth asking this... Has anyone come up with a way to create a new gmail without having to give them your real phone number for sms verification? Especially with Sim hijacks on the rise it seems, I'd rather keep my number as private as possible, only people I actually know, or businesses I trust like my bank have my real number, im not one to put it on Facebook or anywhere public like that. I believe Google started requiring phone numbers to prevent people (and bots) from creating new Gmail accounts for spam purposes or other means apart from using it personally. You could try following the methods discussed in this article. Cannot guarantee it will work though.
I forgot to mention, I'm Canadian so Google voice isn't a free option...
Will check that link out but chances are I've already found out and tried it lol

Oh I see. Hope you are able to figure something out!
Or even, if anyone can confirm I'm able to immediately delete my number after sign up, without them saying I'm not allowed because I don't have any other legit numbers I'm replacing it with as they don't accept textnow etc. I don't want to end up providing it and then they won't let me delete it. I really like Google products overall, but this is a bit much for stopping bots. Why not ask for those verification picture things, or something?
